Andhra medico who accused professors of sexual harassment commits suicide

August 7, 2018 by Nasheman

A PG medical student of SV Medical College in Tirupati, who had accused three professors of sexual harassment, has committed suicide in Andhra Pradesh’s Chittoor district.

The 30-year-old victim was found hanging at her flat in Pileru town on Tuesday.

In April, she had complained to Governor E.S.L. Narasimhan in writing that she was being sexually harassed by three professors from the Paediatric Department.

Following which the college management formed a committee in May to conduct an inquiry.

The student, meanwhile, was upset after she failed in the post-graduate exams. She had told her friends that she was deliberately failed as she had complained to the professors.

The suicide triggered protests by students at the SV College where a sit-in was staged demanding action against the professors.

The victim’s relatives alleged that the inquiry committee had not submitted its report and the three professors had gone to the media describing her as mentally unsound.

They said the attitude of the professors had caused her mental agony.

August 6, 2018 by Nasheman

The National School of Drama here on Sunday clarified that a young woman who complained of molestation by a guest lecturer was never its student.

It said that an internal committee set up to probe is yet to submit its final report for further action.

Osama’s son married 9/11 hijacker’s daughter

August 6, 2018 by Nasheman

Hamza bin Laden, the son of the late Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, has married the daughter of Mohammed Atta, the lead hijacker and one of the ringleaders of the September 2001 terror attacks in the US, according to the family.

The marriage was confirmed by Osama bin Laden’s half-brothers — Ahmad and Hassan al-Attas — during an interview with the Guardian.

“We have heard he has married the daughter of Mohammed Atta,” Ahmad al-Attas told the daily. “We’re not sure where he is, but it could be Afghanistan.”

The brothers said they believed Hamza had taken a senior position within Al Qaida and was aiming to avenge the death of his father who was shot dead during a US military raid in Pakistan’s Abbottabad town on May 2, 2011.

Hamza is the son of one of Osama bin Laden’s three surviving wives, Khairiah Sabar, who was living with her husband in Abbottabad when he was killed.

He has since made public statements urging followers to wage war on the US, the UK, France and Israel and is seen as a deputy to the terrorist group’s incumbent leader, Ayman al-Zawahiri.

Western intelligence agencies have been increasingly focusing on Hamza’s whereabouts over the past two years.

Another of Bin Laden’s sons, Khalid, was killed in the Abbottabad raid. A third, Saad, was killed in a drone strike in Afghanistan in 2009.

Letters purportedly written by Osama bin Laden and seized from the compound suggested he was grooming Hamza to replace him.

The late militant leader’s wives and surviving children have returned to Saudi Arabia, where they were given refuge by the former Crown Prince Mohammed bin Nayef.

The women and children remain in close contact with Osama bin Laden’s mother, Alia Ghanem, who told the Guardian in a recent interview that she remained in regular touch with surviving family members.

HC grants bail to Andhra Bank ex-official

August 6, 2018 by Nasheman

The Delhi High Court on Monday granted bail to a former director of the Andhra Bank arrested in a Rs 5,000 crore fraud case involving Gujarat-based pharmaceutical company Sterling Biotech.

Justice Mukta Gupta allowed bail plea of Anup Prakash Garg asking him to furnish a personal bond of Rs two lakh with two surety bonds of the like amount.

The court imposed condition on Garg that he will not leave the country without permission.

The court also directed him that he will neither directly nor indirectly influence the witnesses nor interfere in further investigation.

Garg has sought the bail saying he was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate on January 12, after a case was filed against him under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) and he has been in custody since then.

Both the ED and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) named Garg as an accused in criminal cases. The ED initiated a money laundering probe taking cognizance of the CBI FIR.

The CBI booked Sterling Biotech, its Directors Chetan Jayantilal Sandesara, Dipti Chetan Sandesara, Rajbhushan Omprakash Dixit, Nitin Jayantilal Sandesara and Vilas Joshi, Chartered Accountant Hemant Hathi, Garg and some unidentified persons in connection with the alleged bank fraud.

Sterling Biotech had taken loans of over Rs 5,000 crore from a consortium of banks led by Andhra Bank which had turned into non-performing assets. Total pending dues of the group companies were Rs 5,383 crore as on December 31, 2016, said the CBI FIR.

The ED said that during the probe, it found that “certain entries” in a diary seized by the Income Tax Department in 2011 showed cash payments amounting to Rs 1.52 crore made to one “Garg, Director, Andhra Bank” between 2008 and 2009 by the Sandesara brothers.

The agency accused Garg of infusing several crores of rupees of his unaccounted cash in various companies through Kolkata-based bogus shell companies with the help of cash or cheque entry operators in Kolkata to launder the money.

Salman to court: Let me travel abroad without permission

August 4, 2018 by Nasheman

Actor Salman Khan moved an application in the sessions court on Friday seeking exemption from an order that mandates him to take permission for going abroad.

Judge Chandra Kumar Sonagra said the order will be pronounced on Saturday.

Khan has appealed against the five-year sentence in the black buck poaching case.

Public prosecutor P.R. Bishnoi objected to the application, saying that since arguments would close soon, a permanent exemption would not be appropriate.

Khan’s counsel Mahesh Bora told the court that the applicant’s profession demands him to travel abroad frequently.

Bora cited an earlier exemption by the High Court. He also recalled the grounds on the basis of which Khan was earlier acquitted by the High Court in two other poaching cases and by the trial court in a case against him under the Arms Act.

The arguments lasted about three hours, after which the judge adjourned the hearing, which will continue on Saturday.

Two Romanians held for Kolkata ATM frauds

August 4, 2018 by Nasheman

Two Romania nationals were detained in connection with ATM frauds in the eastern metropolis wherein many persons were swindled out of money totaling Rs 18-20 lakh through fraudulent transactions, Kolkata Police said on Friday.

The accused were picked from Vasant Vihar in Delhi and 20 duplicate ATM cards, also called clone cards, seized from them. Magnetic strips used in ATM cards were also seized, police told the media here.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the two accused arrived in Kolkata in March and stayed for around two months.

The fraud was committed by the use of skimming machines on ATMs to clone users’ card details. The accused then fraudulently withdrew around Rs 18-20 lakh from different bank accounts at unmanned ATMs in a week.

A Special Investigation Team was set up to probe the fraud after the victims approached city police earlier this week with complaints that money ranging from Rs 4,000 to Rs 40,000 were withdrawn from their bank accounts fraudulently.

Police has so far received 77 complaints, primarily customers of Canara Bank and Punjab National Bank. A former Calcutta University Professor and a renowned radio jockey were among the victims.

Canara Bank identified 37 customers from its south Kolkata branch as victims and said it was taking steps to compensate affected customers within a week. The PNB said it has started compensating depositors as well.

Two held for misappropriating Rs 1.72 crore

August 4, 2018 by Nasheman

Two employees of ATM replenishing company SIS Cash Service Ltd have been arrested for misappropriating over Rs 1.7 crore from its Rajouri Garden branch in the national capital, police said on Friday.

The accused — Manish Kumar and Satpal — were arrested on Thursday from their residences in Uttam Nagar and Rohini here, respectively.

“In a well-planned manner, they withdrew Rs 2.54 crore from company’s vault on two occasions to fill into 10 ATM machines but they put only Rs 65 lakh,” the police said.

The company officials came to know about misappropriation on August 1 after a mismatch of the amount found during calculation of withdrawal and deposit amounts in the vault.

“We found the ATM machines allotted to Manish and Satpal were receiving a lesser amount than they were withdrawing from the vault,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Vijay Kumar said.

During the investigation, the investigating team discovered that Manish and Satpal had withdrawn Rs 1.84 crore on July 27 from Prema Savariya branch of SIS Cash Service, located in Rajouri Garden. But the accused had replenished only Rs 65 lakh in 10 ATMs, the DCP said.

“They have misappropriated Rs 1.19 crore and not loaded in ATM kiosks. The accused did not stop here. They also visited some other ATM kiosks, opened them with the help of keys and passwords and further removed Rs 70,28,500,” he said.

“Manish and Satpal have misappropriated a total sum of Rs 1,72,78,500,” he said, adding that “we have recovered Rs 76 lakh from them so far”.

An investigation is on to recover the rest of the amount, the DCP added.
