An Interactive Session With Creative Director Rajiv Chhilaka

January 5, 2016 by Shaheen Raaj

Rajiv Chilaka

Rajiv Chhilaka is a highly qualified man and also well experienced in the art of filmmaking and has to his credit of being known as the creator of India’s most popular animated character named Chhota Bheem. Besides he has also directed many 2D animated movies which has premiered on Cartoon Network & Pogo Channels.

How about giving us a brief insight into your pre – filmic background?

I hold a Master’s degree in computer Science from the University of Missouri Kansas City, USA & a Bachelor’s degree in Electronics & Telecommunications Engineering from Osmania University, Hyderabad.

Then how come a well – qualified guy like you has jumped on to the bandwagon of creative film making both on the small screen as well as big screen?

In this regard I wish to state that it was my intense passion & profound interest in animation technology that drew me into the arena of creative filmmaking.

How & where did your creative film making begin?

First of all let me inform you that after completing my academic qualification I underwent training in script writing, story boarding, 3D & 2D Animation, Visual Effects and of course I picked up directional skills too.

And then?

To start off with I have been instrumental in shaping the foundation of Green Gold Animation Academy right from its inception. Finally this interest in animation led me to direct theatrical animated movies. So after the success of the 1st ever theatrical movie Chhota Bheem And Curse of Damayan I decided to release one animated movie every year. Actually speaking my vision is to lead Green Gold Animation Academy into becoming another Disney or Pixar of the world.

Can you outline the repertoire of Green Gold Animation Academy?

First of all the Green Gold Animation Academy has to its credit the creation of the 1st ever animated character named Chota Bheem which has already become one of the highest rated Television show of its own genre. That apart Chhota Bheem has a line of merchandise available pan India through Green Gold stores for instance 22 stores & 4 more in the pipeline, and a shop in shop retails outlets, which has more than 4000 outlets. Moreover Green Gold Animation Academy has also come up with 3 theatrical releases namely Chhota Bheem And The Curse of Damayan released in the year 2012, Chhota Bheem And The Throne Of Bali released in the year 2013, Mighty Raju Rio calling released in the year 2014 and now Chhota Bheem Himalayan Adventure which is releasing next week to be precise on 8th Jan, 2016.

What was the inspiration behind the making of a series of films on Chhota Bheem?

To be very frank the idea of making a series of film based on the character of Chhota Bheem created by me, which had originated when I had gone to Manali with my writer Teja Pratap. It was here after seeing the beautiful landscapes that we got the idea of weaving a series of adventurous anecdotes bordering around the character of Chhota Bheem. Which is nothing but fantasy loved by children and even people of all ages and from all walks of life.

Okay so can we say that the next movie in the series namely Chhota Bheem Himalayan Adventure is also inspired by the same landscape thought?

Yes! Of course you can say that as it is very much true.

Now can you tell us why so less films are made for children in India?

The simple reason for this is that there is no proper market for children’s film and moreover good contents for children’s film are also not available. What we really need to develop children’s film is good writers and fairly good outlets for marketing & promoting children’s film.

Don’t you think that the children’s Film Festival held in Hyderabad is the right place to showcase children’s film?

Yes! You are right. It is the right platform to showcase Children’s film. But that’s about it. You can only showcase your film and perhaps bag an award for your film but you cannot promote & market your film totally. Maybe luck by chance you may get overseas buyers. Besides this particular children’s festival is held only once in 2 years. Yes even films in Chhota Bheem series were entered in this festival and they bagged awards too. But we had to viciously promote & market our films on our own for its theatrical release. And lastly can you pinpoint any prominent films that were ultimately released due to their participation in this particular film festival.

What more is ailing children’s film?

To be very frank the multiplex scenario and it’s highly priced ticketing system. Now you can’t expect children to go alone to catch these films and most of the parents just can’t afford the multiplex luxuries to enable their children to see these films.

To wrap up this interactive session can you tell us what are your expectations from the release of Chhota Bheem Himalayan Adventure, releasing this week?

I only want my film Chhota Bheem Himalayan Adventure to reach each & every children at least on the Indian shores then whatever be the outlets. And moreover I will continue to make children’s film, whether it is a winning or losing proposition, focusing on every genre like comedy, sci – fi, adventure, fantasy et al.

Review: ‘Aakhri Shama’ is a heart touching, realistic & remarkable play

January 5, 2016 by Shaheen Raaj

Akhiri Shama

Dramatisation: Kaifi Azmi
Design & Direction: M. S. Sathyu & R. M. Singh
Music: Kuldip Singh & Iqbal Quereshi
Cast: A K Hangal, Bharat Kapoor, Ramesh Talwar, Rakesh Bedi, Mac Mohan, Javed Khan, Aanjjan Srivastav, Kuldip Singh, Masood Akhtar, Akhilendra Mishra, Bansi Thapar, Javed Siddiqi, Sushil Kumar, Rajan Kapur, Surendra Gupta, Ram Swaroop Mago, Vivek Marwah, Om Prakash, Pramod Dubey, Shakir Ali, Salim Arif, Harpreet Singh, Rajeev Jha, Darshan Sengar, Pandit Ratan Sharma, Murlidhar, Jasvinder Singh, Raman Kumar, Jaspaul Sandhu, Amrit Pal et al

Akhiri Shama is a play based on Farhatullah Baig’s book “Dilli Ka Yaadgar Mushaira”, which had been dramatised by Kaifi Azmi & directed by M. S. Sathyu. The play has been opened after a gap of a few years with bumper response & appreciation of the audiences. It opened on 22nd Dec, 2015 at Prithvi Theatre in Mumbai with a houseful show and later on, on 28th Dec, 2015 in Solapur.

The plotted scenario of the mushaira, which forms the basis of the heart warming play, Akhiri Shama, was the last of its kind in the Mughal Court. The court had a tradition of hosting an annual mushaira at the Red Fort. In 1857 when the law & order failed in the city of Delhi, it was evident that the mushaira would be cancelled. But there was 1 person named Maulvi Karimuddin, who went from pillar to post to organize the mushaira. The custom was to place a bowl with a candle or flame in front of the poet whose turn it was to recite. With it the restless “Shama” ended its adventurous & romantic journey. Action gave way to inaction & life to death. Since then this “Shama” has not stirred. Akhiri Shama is of historic significance too. Like the custom of the “Shama”, it was the last such symposium held under the direct patronage of the royal palace.

The 1st half of the play Akhiri Shama is devoted to vivid description of the changes that were overtaking Delhi at break – neck speed. The old Delhi, which was gay, lively & colorful even in its decadence. The city of Delhi is seen lying in ruins after the holocaust of 1857. Visibly moved by the pathetic sight, Ghalib tells in his own words his sad impressions of the unimaginable devastation & destruction that had taken place. It was the indefatigable Maulvi Karimuddin, in whose fertile brain the idea of organising a mushaira originates. He visits place after place, meeting poets, talking with them & even arguing with them. In fact, he makes frantic calls not only on celebrities but also on those who were not well – known. He goes to the royal palace to obtain King Bahadur Shah Zafar’s approval. Maulvi Karimuddin’s zeal, his enthusiasm, his sincerity & his devotion ultimately bears fruit and they all agree to participate in the mushaira. The last Mughal emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar, whom circumstances over which he had no control, prevented him from appearing in person, deputes his son, prince Fatuh – ul – Mulk & Mirza Fakhruddin ‘Ramz’ to preside over it. Not only that, he also sends a ghazal to be recited at the mushaira. This shows how much importance King Bahadur Shah attached to this mushaira. The 2nd half is a factual record of the mushaira itself. The great Masters, Ghalib, Momin, Zauq, Daag and others are seen in all their dignity & glory. Their literary encoutners, their digs, their jibes, their bouquets, their brickbats, their sincere appreciation as well as their malicious comments, all lend color & charm to the function.

The play, Akhiri Shama happens to be the play which is very uniquely stylish & offbeat. It is a totally different play from any other play that has ever been staged in the history of the theatre world. First of all it takes you to the period of the 19th century when Mughal Empire had been coming to an end completely & the English rule was on its full peak. Most impressive of all is the Urdu language spoken flawlessly by all the actors in toto. The sets, the lights & above all the costumes designed by M. S. Sathyu appears to be very realistic & remarkable which was appropriately suiting to the milieu of both the British and above all the Mogul period. In fact the mushaira phase which is held in the 2nd half also looks very realistic & remarkable which rightly convinces the viewers about the plight of the mushairas of Delhi of that particular period.

Performance wise all the actors have delivered a par excellence act. And above all a special well – deserved mention must be made of Ramesh Talwar who plays the character of Karimuddin displaying his extraordinary histrionic skills with finesse.

Tail Piece: Akhiri Shama is one, out of the blue, stage play that should not be missed once it comes to your place of choice, in your nearest town of your nearest city.

Movie Review: All said & done Pointbreak is slightly disappointing

January 1, 2016 by Shaheen Raaj

pointbreak

Producers: John Baldechi, Broderick Johnson, Cristopher Taylor, David Valdes, Kurt Wimmer & Andrew A. Kosove
Director: Ericson Core
Star Cast: Luke Bracey, Edgar Ramirez, Judah Lewis, Teresa Palmer, Ray Winstone, Nikolai Kinski, Tobias Santlemann, Bojesse Christophe, Delroy Lindo et al
Genre: Action Thriller
Verdict: AVERAGE

The current release Pointbreak in 3D is the remake of Kathryn Bigelow’s 1991 film of the same name starring Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swazye. Cinematographer turned Director Ericson Core has made a good adventure thriller in Pointbreak. Yet the cinematographer Ericson Core overrides the director Ericson core.

Plot: An undercover cop makes his way into a scene of bank – robbing extreme – sports athletes. Johnny Utah ‘the Osaki 8’ is named after Ono Osaki, an eco – warrior who challenged the extreme sports world to a series of eight ordeals that honours the forces of nature. The challenge is to create a perfect line when completing the trials. Although Johnny Utah claims it is a path to enlightenment, Bodhi says that Ono Osaki was more interested in balance than enlightenment and he and the others in his group appear to want to use the teaching for liberating rather than material gain, even though it involves criminal activity.

Aces: The outstanding performances of Luke Bracey and Edgar Ramirez, the mind blowing action sequences and above all the brilliant cinematography of Ericson Core.

Minuses: Sadly enough this Pointbreak is no match or not even a patch on the original Pointbreak. Maybe director Ericson Core intended to create some kind of ultra mega action movie but ends up failing to live up to the audiences expectations.

Last Word: Pointbreak lacks the punch and it all ends up as a gimmick to showcase a Cola Commercial. Period!

Movie Review: ‘Monster Hunt’ is one of the most endearing and superb movie

January 1, 2016 by Shaheen Raaj

Monster-Hunt

Producer: Bill Kong, Doris Tse & Yee Chung – Man
Director: Raman Hui
Star Cast: Bai Baihe, Elaine Jin, Jing Boran, Jiang Wu, Eric Sang
Genre: Adventure
Verdict: VERY GOOD

Raman Hui the animator of lovable movies like Shrek, antz and Madagascar fame now makes his feature debut with Monster Hunt, a $40 million live – action / animation hybrid fantasy movie.

Plot: Humans have been at war against monsters for generations, but after the birth of Woba, the last of the monster kings, an effort to bring the two races together begins in right earnest. So when a monster queen gives birth to a cute prince, the child faces an immediate threat from other fantastic creatures and the humans beings too, who hunt them.

Aces: In his debut movie Monster Hunt director Raman Hui has come up with a very endearing fare for people of all ages and from every walks of life. Besides its technical finesse, the movie Monster Hunt also has some smart performances from Chinese actors like Baihe, Elaine Jin, Jing Boran, Jiang Wu, Eric Sang etc.

Minuses: The war oriented plot between monsters of all shapes and sizes and human beings seems highly indigestible. At one point of time the human beings seems more interested in fine dining topped with the choicest wines and then at another point of time they are more interested in a fight to finish warfare with the monsters.

Last Word: Monster Hunt has regaled the Chinese people in a big way and now it is ready to regale the global audiences. So all in all Monster Hunt is certainly a not to be missed fare especially for the children as well as the teenagers. Period!
