One of Bollywood’s most iconic megastar’s & India’s very own “Pad Man” Akshay Kumar is supporting a nationwide campaign, #18to82, with the aim of bridging the gap between the 18% of menstruating females in India who use sanitary napkins, and the 82% predominantly engaging in unhygienic practices. The pioneering campaign launches ahead of the inauguration of the Niine Movement, an ambitious new initiative aimed at raising awareness of menstrual hygiene and tackling the age-old stigma against menstruation across both genders and all age groups.

Akshay Kumar is a renowned woman empowerment advocate and boldly tackled the issue of the menstrual taboo in the award-winning film Pad Man. Despite India housing 355 million menstruating women, the 2nd highest menstruating population globally, approximately only 18% of them currently use sanitary napkins – with the other 82% of women often reverting to unhygienic & unsafe alternatives such as old cloths, rags, hay & even ash. The key stimulus behind this staggering statistic can be traced back to decades of archaic attitudes & stigmas surrounding menstruation and the lack of accessibility for safe and affordable sanitary products. A result of the unwillingness to discuss female menstruation is the subsequent culture of silence & shame which has left women with no choice but to partake in unsafe menstrual practices behind closed doors, frequently resulting in urinary & reproductive tract infections, stress, anxiety & even gender-based violence.

The Niine Movement is conceived by social entrepreneur Amar Tulsiyan. Speaking about the launch of the movement Amar Tulsiyan said, “We each have a responsibility to do what we can to tackle the taboos around menstruation and educate the next generation about periods in the right way. SHEEBA & AKASHDEEP TO ACT IN A PLAY!

Sheeba, who was last seen on the TV show Haasil, has now shifted her focus to theatre. And her latest play Golmaal, holds a special place in her heart as she will be acting for the 1st time alongside her husband, producer Akashdeep. They will play spouses in the play. Sheeba says, “This is the 1st time ever I am acting with Akashdeep. Previously, I have worked with him on projects he has directed. I have always been a director’s actor & I surrender myself to his vision. Then he was the boss, but now, I am the boss… both in real life & in this play. As an actor, I disconnect from my personal equation when I am working, which is what people witness when Akashdeep & I rehearse together. They can see bits of Sheeba in my character, but never my relationship with him. I don’t like my personal & professional lives to intermingle.” Unlike many, the actress doesn’t see it as an advantage to work with her spouse. “There is no advantage at all. I can say a lot of things and have arguments with my co-actors. However, it’s not easy to do that with your spouse as it might affect your relationship back home!” The play will premiere this month only.

RAVEENA TANDON APPEALS THE GOVERNMENT TO BAN ANIMAL CIRCUSES

Animals suffering in circuses have a fresh ray of hope, with the outspoken actor Raveena Tandon now supporting their freedom. The actor has written to the Minister of Environment, Forests & Climate Change to impose a “complete & immediate end” to the use of all animals in circuses. She joins another actor Dia Mirza, who had also asked the Government to end animal circuses. In the letter, Raveena observed “I believe that it is time we dissociate cruelty from entertainment, and let these majestic creatures be where they belong. Our culture also has many traditional art forms which showcase the skill of our artists. They should be adopted by circuses to evolve into an engaging & healthy entertainment” Raveena Tandon supports the Federation of Indian Animal Protection Organisations (FIAPO), which has been campaigning for the freedom of these abused animals. Lending her support & appreciation to their work she said, “I express my support to FIAPO’s End Circus Suffering campaign, which has helped hundreds of circus animals to be freed from this cruel form of entertainment. I urge you to consider the universal cruelty to animals in this industry and impose a complete & immediate end to the use of all animals in circuses.”

DHANUSH TO UNVEIL INDIA POSTER OF ‘EXTRAORDINARY JOURNEY OF FAKIR’ IN CANNES

Dhanush starrer The Extraordinary Journey Of Fakir, an Indo-French production, will be showcased in Cannes this year in one of the many events on the sidelines of the festival. The India poster for the film will be unveiled by the cast & the film will be honored at the India Day celebrations at the festival on 11th May, 2018 along with Manto. The “comic adventure” directed by Ken Scott is Dhanush’s 1st ever international project and will be released in English & French. The French producer of the film is Brio Films of Luc Bossi, who has also co-written the film. The film is not an art house cinema even though it’s based on a French novella, “The Extraordinary Journey of The Fakir Who Got Trapped In An Ikea Wardrobe”, by Romain Uertolas. “While the book was in a fantastical zone, the film is an accessible fable, an entertainer and is a stellar salad of a cast from all continents, held together by Dhanush.” The film also stars Bernice Bejo, Gerard Jugnot, Erin Moriarty & Barkhad Abdi. The film is set in Mumbai, Paris, Falklands, Spain, Rome & Libya, and will release in France on 30th May, 2018. HANSAL MEHTA & ‘OMERTA’ IN TROUBLE AGAIN

Hansal Mehta known for his socially relevant films is on the wrong side of the law now. The Supreme Court through its arbitrator Samrat Sen has attached the revenue paid to Hansal from all projects involving him in varied capacities beginning with Omerta which releases next month. Adarsh Telemedia, a film production house bankrolled by Amit Agarwal, lent a sum of over Rs 7 crore to Hansal and producer Shaailesh Singh for the film Simran when demonetization struck Bollywood along with the rest of India. Mehta had convinced the Calcutta based Adarsh Telemedia to bail the film by lending a sum against a minimum guarantee which got the film released in Sept, last year. The arbitrator,a senior legal counsel already came heavily on Mehta and his production house, ironically called Karma, when Adarsh Telemedia filed a law suit against Mehta and couple of his associates. Mehta moved on to other projects ignoring the constant reminders from Amit Agarwal and the production house got an arbitration order in their favor. As per the order, whatever Mehta earns to the tune of 7 Cr, should be deposited in a separate bank account. It is now expected that other projects like Balaji’s Mental Hai Kya? The Scam, The Accidental Prime Minister, Garbage, Bose Dead or Alive & Ronnie Screwvala, a film with director Bejoy Nambiar, a proposed Abhishek-Aishwarya Rai starrer & Soha Ali Khan’s biopic on Ram Jethmalani may fall under the radar of the recovery of Adarsh Telemedia.

SHREYAS TALPADE & WIFE HAVE A BABY GIRL THROUGH SURROGACY

Shreyas Talpade & his wife Deepti have both been blessed with a baby girl. Married for 14 years, Shreyas and his wife were advised by doctors to consider surrogacy as the best option to have a baby and they decided to consider the process of surrogacy to complete their family. Shreyas says, “The scheduled day for the baby’s delivery was around 15th or 20th of this month. We had planned a small vacation to Hong Kong on the 7th. But the doctor suggested that the day of delivery might shift to around 10th or 12th. So we decided to go by the 2nd or 3rd and return by the 7th. After we landed in Hong Kong, we got ready, and were heading to the cruise terminal since we had planned to go on a cruise. While we were on our way, we got a call from the doctor saying that the surrogate is gone into labour and that we would have to return. We immediately returned. The baby was born while we were mid-air so we headed directly to the hospital. Shreyas says, “We have shortlisted a few names but we will decide a name for our baby in a day or two.”

ESHA GUPTA CHAMPIONS THE CAUSE OF EDUCATION – ADOPTS TWO VILLAGES IN UTTAR PRADESH!

Esha Gupta has now decided to adopt 2 villages in Uttar Pradesh’s Bijnor district to promote education. After having announced the creation of an academy that will look into the requirement of Indian footballers struggling with monetary concerns, Gupta has now taken the onus of 2 villages in the Bijnor district of Uttar Pradesh. Esha confirms, “There will be logistical issues, but I will personally look into it. Everyone has the right to education. There are many children in small towns who want to study and make a meaningful career, but don’t have the required amenities. If I can help them, I will feel privileged.” The project, which marks Esha’s collaboration with Delhi based NGO, will see her provide financial support to schools for the provision of basic amenities. Esha will provide funds for the appointment of teachers in the villages. The NGO will shortlist qualified teachers, who will be deputed to the locations. While Gupta will also enable the schools in purchasing projectors, the NGO will also raise money to build better toilets and open a local library where the children can study. The project will kick-off this month. Esha will travel to Bijnor soon to look into the nitty gritties.

Sony Pictures Networks Productions (SPNP) is all set to launch the trailer of their next film T For Taj Mahal on an international platform.

The trailer of the film will be unveiled at the India Pavilion in Cannes Film Festival on 9th May, 2018.

Directed by 6 time president’s National Award winner Kireet Khurana, T for Taj Mahal is a relevant & timely story exploring a subject that is a big challenge in the country – the namely that of lack of education.

Thalaivar’s Kaala To Clash With Sultan’s Race 3 On This Ramzan Eid

Yes! It’s time for Thalaivar versus Sultan at the Box-Office turnstiles on the eve of this Ramzan Eid. The recent strike in the Tamil film industry had stalled the release of many big-ticket movies including Rajnkanth’s gangster drama Kaala. The film which was supposed to hit the screens on 27th Apr, 2018, had been postponed due to strikes. The makers of Kaala are now planning to release the film in Jun, 2018 or Jul, 2018 and since Ramzan Eid, which is coming in June is celebrated across the country as a national holiday, they are deciding to block this date. Interestingly, Salman Khan’s mega-budget stylish action thriller Race 3 is also scheduled to be released on the same date. So if this clash happens, it will naturally be Thalaivar versus Sultan at the Box-Office turnstiles. Talking about Race 3, the film is expected to be grander than its previous two installments. Unlike, the last two parts which was helmed by Abbas-Mustan, Race 3 is directed by ace choreographer Remo D’Souza. The film is produced under the banners of Salman Khan Films and Tips. National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Sends Notices To Telangana Government (TG)

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) recently sent a notice to the Telangana Government (TG) and the Union Information and Broadcasting Ministry over a Telugu actress’ allegations of sexual exploitation. The commission took suo moto cognizance of media reports about the allegations raised by actress Sri Reddy and a lack of grievance redressal mechanism for women in the film industry. Sri Reddy created a sensation by resorting to strip protest against casting couch in Tollywood in front of the office of Telugu Film Chamber of Commerce (TFCC). Sri Reddy, who started her career as a news reader on a Telugu channel and also did small roles in a couple of films, named a few prominent personalities of the industry. She started the “SriReddyLeaks” page on Facebook to expose those exploiting women aspiring to work in films. Besides she has questioned the Telangana Government and the Movie Artists’ Association (MAA) on the absence of a Committee Against Sexual Harassment. The Commission observed that the contents of the media reports, if true, tantamount to inaction of the part of the State Government. The NHRC then issued notices to Telangana’s Chief Secretary and I&B Ministry Secretary, calling for a detailed report in the matter within four weeks. The panel also noted that Sri Reddy had staged a semi-nude protest outside the Telugu Film Chamber of Commerce and an annoyed MAA not only dismissed her allegations but also declared that she will not be given its membership under any circumstances.

Producer Anil Sunkara Drops Venkatesh And Rana Duggabati’s Projects

Producer Anil Sunkara makes films with both 14 Reels and also on his own production banner AK Entertainments. But in recent times, while 14 Reels scored a disaster like Lie, even Anil’s own production house lost big betting on Kirrak Party. Quite surprisingly, now Anil is said to have dropped two interesting projects after these developments. Actually, Venkatesh and Ravi Teja’s film was supposed to take off but for reasons unknown, the film didn’t happen. Later Venkatesh moved to Fun and Frustration to be directed by Anil Ravipudi. And then Rana Duggabati’s rumored biopic of Stuartpuram notorious robber “Tiger Nageswara Rao” under the direction of Vamsi Krishna Akella is also Anil’s movie only. But this film is also not happening any soon. Rumors now allege that Anil Sunkara dropped the two projects due to some financial constraints, while his friends starting 14 Reels Plus without him as a partner led to the dropping of these two films.

Lonnie Montrel Taylor the rapper, a fan favorite in his native state of Mississippi, was one of the two people fatally shot in while driving in Jackson recently on a Sunday night. He was 22 years old. Lonnie Montrel Taylor, was in his vehicle along with an unidentified female passenger. The Jackson State University student was shot from the rear multiple times, which caused his SUV to swerve and crash into a house. The female passenger remained unharmed, while Lonnie Montrel Taylor was pronounced dead at the scene. The Jackson Police Department has been unable to find a suspect or a motive for the killing. Lionnie Montrel Taylor rose to local game in 2015 due to the release of the track “Colors.” He later on earned the top downloaded mixtape spot on LiveMixtapes with “They Know What’s Goin’ On” that same year. Elsewhere, the single “Special” has garnered over 2.4 million views on the Worldstarhiphop YouTube channel. In a Dec, 2017 interview with ThisIs50, Lonnie Montreal Taylor talked about the advice he got from 50 Cent, telling listeners his goal of buying his family a home with his first ever “mega-check.” In Lonnie Montreal Taylor’s view, that day was coming up in the near future, too. Ashley Judd Sues Harvey Weinstein

Ashley Judd recently filed defamation and sexual harassment lawsuit against film producer Harvey Weinstein, alleging that he damaged her movie career after she refused his sexual advances. The civil lawsuit, filed in Los Angeles Superior Court in Santa Monica, accuses Harvey Weinstein of causing Ashley Judd to lose a part in 1998 in the film The Lord Of The Rings by making “baseless smears” against her. The lawsuit alleges that Harvey Weinstein “was retaliating against Ashley Judd for rejecting his sexual demands approximately one year earlier, when he cornered her in a hotel room under the guise of discussing business.”

Cannes Film Festival To Create A Hotline

Marlene Schiappa, France’s gender equality minister, said that the industry grandees would be warned to watch their behavior when they arrive at the world’s most prestigious film festival, which takes place in the Riviera resort next month. “We’ve gone into partnership with the Cannes Film Festival to tackle sexual harassment and also set up a helpline.” Marlene Schiappa said. “One of the rapes that harvey Weinstein is accused of happened at Cannes, and so the festival cannot fail to act.” Marlene Schiappa also stated that the measures were aimed at protecting not only actresses but all women working in or around the film industry. The Cannes festival has come under fire in the past for alleged sexism, notably over the obligation for women to wear high-heeled shoes on the red carpet. Harvey Weinstein has been accused of four sexual assaults at Cannes in the recent years including the alleged rape of a 21-year-old Italian actress Asia Argento.
