Amala Paul, who was summoned by the Crime Branch over a case relating to allegedly forging documents to register her high – end vehicle in Puducherry, failed to turn up recently at their office. Her advocate informed the Crime Branch that the actress needed more time due to her tight filming schedules. Crime Branch officials said that they would file a case after getting an explanation from the star. A preliminary inquiry conducted by the Crime Branch found that the insurance policies and even the fake rent contracts were raised to support the claim that the stars were living in Puducherry. The Crime Branch also received a report from the motor vehicles department, apart from the video visuals.

Randeep Hooda, who has flawlessly brought biopics to life on – screen, is all geared up to play another real life character – Sultana Daku in Madhureeta Anand’s directorial, based on Sujit Saraf’s novel – “The confessions of Sultana Daku”. The film will go on the floors in Apr, 2018 and will follow the exploits of the swashbuckling dacoit from the Bhantu clan who terrorized the United Provinces (now Uttar Pradesh & Uttarakhand) in the 1920’s. Producer Rahul Mittra, who purchased the rights to the book with co – producer & presenter Raju Chadha, says, “The film will be shot in the Terai region of Uttar Pradesh and Randeep, who is a champion horseman & rider, will film the extensive action & racing sequences in Kazakistan, where real locales will pass off as North India from the 1920’s. “The approach to the film will not be dark & gory and more like a superhero – drama, where Robin Hood Randeep’s character takes from the rich & gives to the poor as India fights for freedom,” Mittra added. Sultana was a dashing dacoit who named his horse Chetak, after Maharana Pratap’s horse and operated on a code of honour. When he was captured by the British, Officer Freddie Young tried his hardest to have Sultana pardoned but to no avail. Sultana then asked Freddie Young to raise his son as a “sahib” before he was sent to the gallows on 7th Jul, 1924. Randeep has earlier portrayed real life characters of Raja Ravi Verma, Charles Sobraj, Sarbjit & Jeet Johar in Beeba Boys.

Kamran returns as the director of a new short film titled, The Photographer. Interestingly, Karan Kundra spent 3 months learning to play the piano & to prep up for his role in 1921. The actor said that the piano was one of those musical instruments, which he always wanted to learn. He took classes from one of the renowned piano teachers in town before heading to London to shoot for the film. Adding to that there was initially going to be someone on deck just in case, but it was never needed. SIDDHARTH P MALHOTRA SAYS NISHANT KAUSHIK’S CLAIMS OVER ‘HICHKI’ ARE BASELESS

Recently Siddharth P Malhotra, son of actor Prem Kishen & grandson of late actor Premnath & Bina Rai, was dragged to court by writer Nishant Kaushik over credit to his story Hichki which is made by YRF Films with Rani Myukerjee in the lead. Says Siddharth P Malhotra, “I had acquired the Hindi rights to make “Front of the Class” in 2013. Nishant Kaushik’s claims are baseless. He was contacted through Exceed Entertainment and I haven’t even met him once. We were looking for writers who could come up with a take on the “Front of the Class”. We had approached several writers including Nishant Kaushik. He was given a brief for the film & the story and then he came up with, was not what we were looking for. So, we did not proceed with him & Exceed ntertainment was informed about my decision immediately, in 2015. When contacted, Rani confirms saying, “We had many inspiring teachers in my school (Maneckji Cooper, Juhu, Mumbai). Mrs. Vakil, our Geography teacher, used to teach us in such a crystal – clear manner, that we wouldn’t need to study once we went home. Mrs. Dadarkar, our History & Literature teacher was excellent. She would spend time with students, and teach us Julius Caesar in a manner that brought the story alive. She made us live a story like it was happening in front of our eyes.”

Rani Mukherji adds, “Our teachers were very friendly & informal and wouldn’t heap a lot of academic pressure on us. We had toppers, students who did well, like me, and students who would barely manage passing marks. But our teachers were never harsh on those who would fail or struggle to pass. I remember growing up in a manner where we were never forced to chase high academic scores all the time. We had fun studying. This realization of mine, I have tried to reflect in Hichki through my character.”

“I think the biggest lesson today (for teachers & parents), is that the students should be able to express themselves freely at school. They should be able to fly. School is the only space where one can express oneself freely, for once a child grows up, pressures of building a career & earning money will automatically emerge. It’s very important to let children explore & figure out what they are good at – it could be academics, sports or the field of art. As school years are the most formative ones, it’s important for parents & teachers to let children fly at this stage. I learnt this from my teachers and I thank them for shaping me up the way I am today. This was invaluable learning for me and my character in Hichki will live this philosophy, this learning.”

Gavie Chahal, who will be seen in Tiger Zinda Hai, was thrilled to be part of this project after Ek Tha Tiger. The actor says he loved being part of the project as he is aware of the audience’s expectations from the film. “It was amazing to rejoin the Tiger & Zoya. I was so enthusiastic and felt excited and on top of the world. Of course, we have all put in a lot of effort in the film as we know the high expectations people have from this film,” he says. The film has a lot of action sequences, and Gavie Chahal has some favourite ones. “I play the same character of ISI agent captain Abrar, in Tiger Zinda Hai too. So I already knew the nuances of the character but I still underwent workshops for weapons training & physical strength under Hollywood action director Tom Struthers. There was one big action scene with Salman Khan that fascinated me the most. It was a long sequence which had to be shot in 1 take and had lots of blasts. But with the grace of God, we did it perfectly with 1 Hour – 2 hours of rehearsals in 1 take,” he says.

Karan Oberoi’s Twitter account was hacked recently but his luck saved him, as he was informed well on time about the mishap. The account was hacked on 22nd Nov, 2017 during the day. As Karan Oberoi was busy attending IFFI and the screening of his upcoming flick, he hardly got a moment to notice it. It was only after he received a call from a friend, Karan Oberoi got to know about the hack. The person informed him about the irrelevant & objectionable content sent to her from the actor’s account. His IT team confirmed the hack and took no time to recover the account. Karan Oberoi tweeted to assure about things that were once again back on track. His tweet reads, “OMG! Why in the world would MY twitter be hacked ?????! For all the folks here who were concerned, we are back in business! ” Karan Oberoi’s publicist confirmed that though the account was hacked, a team of professionals reacted spontaneously to get control of the twitter account. “Though some inappropriate messages & content were sent to few of his friends & colleagues, thankfully, everything came under control before it could cause serious harm to anyone. Karan Oberoi is not going to take any legal action against the hackers as nothing destructive or harmful has been done by the hackers.”

DESHIK VANSADIA BRINGS SHAKESPEARE’S PLAY “THE TAMING OF THE SHREW” TO MUMBAI

Taking a leaf from his book, “What’s In A Name”, an upcoming theatre company helmed by producer Kanupriya Pandit is gearing up in staging a Shakespearean English comedy, “The Taming Of The Shrew”, in Jan, 2018. The play is being directed by Deshik Vansadia who will also perform a starring role in it too. The main plot surrounds themes of courtship & relationship. It also highlights the gender equality between a man & a woman. The novel concept to be noted about the play being staged is that the men will play the women’s roles while the women will portray the men’s roles. Dish TV & Videocon D2h Merger Deal Concludes

The ministry of information & broadcasting (MIB) has approved the merger between direct to home (DTH) platforms Dish TV India & Videocon d2h. The MIB vide its letter dated 15th Dec, 2017 has approved the requests made by the company for completion of the transaction. This paves way for the creation of the largest listed media company in India taking into consideration the last reported revenue & EBITDA numbers of the 2 DTH players on a pro -forma basis.

Kerala based multi system operator (MSO) KCCL (Kerala Communications Cable Ltd) has an ambitious broadcast business plan that includes launching general entertainment, news & education channels with an investment of Rs 100 crore over the next 2 years. The broadcast business is under a sister concern Keralavision Channel Broadcasting Ltd (KCBL). Praveen Mohan is the chairman of the company while Rajamohanan Mambra is the MD. The 1st channel to launch from the KCBL stable is Malayalam GEC Kerala Vision.

TRAI Floats Consultation Paper

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has issued a consultation paper on “Issues relating to Uplinking & Downlinking Television Channels in India” after receiving a reference from the ministry of information & broadcasting (MIB) to look into the matter as the existing guidelines are more than 5 years old. The authority has sought comments & counter – comments from stakeholders on a range of issues including net worth of eligible companies, grant of license for satellite channels, entry fee / licence fee, encryption of TV channels & transfer of license amongst others.

DAVP Spent Rs 315.04 Crores

The directorate of advertising & visual publicity (DAVP), the nodal agency of the Government of India for advertising, spent Rs 315.04 crores on TV channels in 2016 -2017. This is higher than the Rs 281.85 crores spent in 2015 – 2016 & Rs 268.05 crores in 2014 – 2015. The DAVP spent Rs 145.57 crores on private FM radio. The same was Rs 94.54 crores in 2015 – 2016 & Rs 69.02 crores in 2014 – 2015. The ad spends on radio / AIR was Rs 37 crores up from Rs 17.09 crore in 2015 – 2016 & Rs 28.89 crores in 2014 – 2015.

Zee Media Corporation Ltd (ZMCL) re – enters the Uttar Pradesh / Uttarakhand market with the launch of Zee Uttar Pradesh / Uttarakhand on 20th Dec, 2017. Direct to home (DTH) operator Videocon d2h will voluntarily delist its American Depositary Shares (ADS) from the Nasdaq Global Market and to deregister with US Securities & Exchange Commission (SEC) in connection with its amalgamation with Dish TV India. The delisting of the Videocon d2h ADS’s from Nasdaq is expected to take effect on or about 3rd Jan, 2018, after close of business.

TDSAT Extends Interim Relief

The Telecom Disputes Settlement & Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT) has extended the interim relief granted to TV channels whose contracts with DD’s free DTH platform Freedish has expired till further orders. With Prasar Bharati yet to come up with a new policy decision on selling vacant slots on Freedish, the tribunal has passed an order stating that the interim relief shall continue to the benefit of all concerned until further orders.
