Cauvery row: Water-starved TN moves SC, says Karnataka yet to release 5.9 TMC

July 5, 2017 by Nasheman

cauvery

Chennai: The prolonged water-tussle between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu renewed on Wednesday after the latter moved the Supreme Court, saying it is yet to receive 5.966 TMC of water.

Tamil Nadu, which is on the verge of the worst drought it has seen in the recent past, mentioned that Karnataka has not complied with earlier order in the issue.

On March 21, the court directed the Karnataka Government to supply 2,000 cusecs of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu every day.

An apex court bench headed by Justice Dipak Misra had earlier directed Karnataka to provide 200 cusecs of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu till its further order.

The top court had earlier in January this year dismissed the plea seeking compensation from both Karnataka and Tamil Nadu for the loss of property during the Cauvery water related dispute between both states.

The Cauvery water dispute between the two states is at least four decades old. However, this time many factors including acute shortage of drinking water, a sixth consecutive year of deficient rainfall, drop in agricultural production and the possibility of a second successive drought year has fuelled emotions across the state.

Appeals were filed by Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala against the 2007 award of the Cauvery Water Dispute Tribunal (CWDT) on sharing of water for 15 consecutive workings days.

An Interview With Cinema Consultant Pradeep Tandon

July 5, 2017 by Shaheen Raaj

Pradeep Tandon is Consultant for Cinemas of both the Single Screens as well as the Multilexes.

Pradeep-Tandon

How are single screens supposed to survive when odds are totally against them? The government gives them no benefits to face the competition from multiplexes?

It’s the Single Screen Cinemas only who started this Industry and because of their initiative Cinema Industry has reached to this level. Now when their survival has become Challenging Government should charge them with Minimum Entertainment Tax.

Few films are made which appeal to single screen crowd and when such a film comes from a reputed production house and boasts of a decent star cast, the distributor asks for impractical MG’s which are usually not possible to recover, let alone make profit.
Terms & conditions should be the same for both the Single Screens & the Multiplexes. No one has a right to Charge 2 different Prices for the same services. Distributors have to Pay the Digital Charges for every Cinema to the companies like Real Image and that amount is a nominal one. To be on safer side Distributors can charge that fixed amount from Single cinemas in case they have a doubt about their business

Shouldn’t distributors be more practical when dealing with single screens since they can’t go on increasing ticket rates to cover high MG’s like multiplexes can; that will only drive away our audiences.

Cinema Industry is there to cater to each & every Class of People. Increased ticket Prices at Single Screens to recover the MG loses thus is a loss of business. Single Screen Cinemas should also get a movie on percentage basis which is beneficial for the distributor, the exhibitor & the audiences.

While at multiplexes the share of the distributor tapers down as the film goes into its 2nd or 3rd week, it is the Single Screen that gives constant share to a film every week that follows.

Sharing the amount with distributors in the 2nd & 3rd week should be reduced for the Single Screens too as there is a heavy drop in business even for a blockbusters after the 1st week while the running expenses of a cinema remains the same. To make the Single Screens survive they must get a government & a distributor’s support.

It is necessary for a film to be appreciated by both, the Multiplex as well as the Single Screen audience for it to turn into a big grosser and on that count, the survival of the Single Screen is as much necessary.

As the class of audiences is fixed for the Single Screen, to convert a Hit movie into a blockbuster Single Screen Cinemas too play a vital role as there are still many small cities & villages where multiplexes are not there and Single Screen Cinemas are ruling.

What are your views on the consolidation happening in the exhibition industry and the humongous deals?

Big Exhibitors are always in a hunt for the new Location or else is ready at any time to take over the smaller exhibitors. This way Big Players are ruling the market and I believe one day they will start dominating the distributors also as they will have the maximum market Share. There is a probability that this market may turn into a monopoly market within the next few years

Do you think the reviews of films by critics play an important role of drawing the audience to the cinema?

Critics review plays a very important role. Good reviews makes up the mind of a people to go for a movie while a bad review changes the mind of the people to not go for a movie even if he wanted to see it.

Why do you think few studios are closing down their Hindi film production business? What do you think are possible reasons?

I think they are unable to deliver Hindi films that are accepted by all classes. They mainly make films for Multiplex audiences, and only that’s the reason why the audiences are shifting to Small Screen Serials.

What is the difference between the corporate run studios & traditional family run studios? Who holds the upper hand?

In India we have only Yashraj films & Eros International and a few more and they know the taste of the Hindi Cinema audiences better than any other corporate run studios

Your views on Entertainment taxation policies don’t you think it’s too high in a few states? Do you think it would be best if the taxation could be reduced and made uniform all over the country? Have you & the Multiplex Association ever tried to negotiate with the government?

GST has been implemented from 1st Apr, 2017. In it there is a one Single Tax in all the states. I think this will help in uniformation.

mandana-karimi

Mandana Karimi (ex – Big Boss fame) is all over the news and not for the right reasons. The actress who got married to her boyfriend, Gaurav Gupta on 25th Jan, 2015, has filed a divorce petition against him.

Looks like things didn’t go as romantically as we thought they would. The actress has also filed a domestic violence case against her husband & her in – laws claiming that Gaurav Gupta barred her from entering their house 7 weeks back. The actress filed the petition yesterday.

She has also filed a complaint against her mother – in – law for harassment and has made demands of monetary reliefs in the petition.

In a recent interaction with members of the fourth estate she averred, “I was thrown out of my matrimonial house 7 weeks ago. I made desperate attempts to reconcile with them, but my in – laws didn’t allow me back. Gaurav Gupta has totally cut me off.”

The actress also mentioned that she was forced to quit her acting career since it was ‘demeaning as per the family status in the society’.

Both Manadana Karimi and Gaurav Gupta were dating each other for 2 years before they decided to tie the knot and it was a very romantic wedding, which is why one is quite taken aback to hear about their divorce so soon. Though Mandana Karimi or her lawyer hasn’t revealed anything more, Mandana Karimi has made a total of 3 allegations against her husband in her divorce petition.

The Iranian model turned actress Mandana Karimi also claims that her in – laws and Gaurav Gupta had forced her to convert to Hinduism ahead of the wedding. So Mandana Karimi and Gaurav Gupta indeed had a Hindu wedding.

Movie Review: ‘Ringan’ is One Of The Best Movies Of 2017

July 3, 2017 by Shaheen Raaj

ringan movie

Producer: Vitthal Patil, Ganesh Phuke, Mahesh Yewale, Yogesh Nikam, Makrand Mane & Vidhi Kasliwal
Director: Makrand Mane
Star Cast: Shashank Shende, Master Sahil Joshi, Suhas Sirsat, Kalyanee Mulay, Vijay Salve, Umesh Jagtap, Shantanu Gangane, Abhay Mahajan, Vitthal Patil, Ketan Pawar, Shyam Savaji, Govind Bhatlavande, Dattatray Jagtap, Prashant Tapasvi, Omkar Mane et al
Music: Rohit Nagbhide

Director Makrand Mane had made his directorial debut with a stage play of same name Ringan which means a circle. In the context of this film “the circle of life”. Another noteworthy aspect of the movie is that Ringan had bagged the National Award as the “Best Marathi Film” almost 2 years ago but it could lighten up the darkened auditorium only now. A backhanded compliment is very apt at this stage to Ringan’s director Makrand Mane for his directorial brilliance & to Ringan’s producers namely Vitthal Patil, Ganesh Phuke, Mahesh Yewale, Yogesh Nikam, Makrand Mane & Vidhi Kasliwal for producing such a rare gem of a movie.

Ringan’s circle of life at regular intervals showcases darkness & then there’s light. However as a wise wizard once said, “Happiness can be found, even in the darkest of times, when one only remembers to turn on the light.”

But director Makarand Mane succeeds in doing is to motivate oneself to look out for the light. A film that is so relevant to the current disastrous state of our farmer could have gone either ways.

One way that was previously taken by a film like Gabhricha Paus. That way was effective in an opposite way. Although a depressing end does not necessarily means a depressing message.

Although Ringan presents a perfect solution.
Yet the solution isn’t that simple & hence the positivity that could drive oneself towards finding a solution is what the film actually gives the audiences, instead of the solution itself. Beyond this very local context of the film, beneath there’s a universal theme to it.
The father – son bond is not new in universal cinema, but Ringan is probably the best depiction of the same in the recent history of Indian Cinema.

That apart Ringan has waited for it’s time & fortunately or unfortunately it’s releasing in times where we’ve just went through a huge farmer’s strike. But the lighter part is that there’s Waari atmosphere all over Maharashtra. Just like Elizabeth Ekadashi Pandharpur is an essential part of Ringan.

And the journey of Ringan suggests us that for finding the God within one must work towards it. Miracles don’t occur on their own, one must create one’s own miracle!!!

Performance wise all the actors namely Shashank Shende, Master Sahil Joshi, Suhas Sirsat, Kalyanee Mulay, Vijay Salve, Umesh Jagtap, Shantanu Gangane, Abhay Mahajan, Vitthal Patil, Ketan Pawar, Shyam Savaji, Govind Bhatlavande, Dattatray Jagtap, Prashant Tapasvi, Omkar Mane et al are too brilliant to be true.

Last but not the least Ringan is an extremely rare & “complete” film that can interest all kinds of audiences. In Marathi Cinema audiences look out for a human connection & Ringan makes that connection instantly.

Tail Piece: Ringan is a must watch movie!!! It’s probably the “Best Marathi film” made in recent years and its bagging the National Award simply proves that fact. Yet one more best aspect of Ringan is that even after being universal in theme & approach the heart of it is very much beating for Apla Marathi Maanus.

Movie Review: ‘Tubelight’ has certainly lost its fizz goes phuss

July 3, 2017 by Shaheen Raaj

Tubelight

by Shaheen Raaj & Rizwan Asad

Banner: Salman Khan Films & Kabir Khan Films
Producer: Salman Khan
Director: Kabir Khan
Star Cast: Salman Khan, debutante Zhu Zhu, Sohail Khan, debutante Master Matin Rey Tangu, Isha Talwar, Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub, Om Puri, Yashpal Sharma, Sahil Mehta, Late Om Puri Shatrughan Sinha & Shah Rukh Khan (Cameo Appearances)
Music: Pritam & Julius Packiam

Director Kabir Khan needs no special introduction as he has delivered countless number of runaway super hit fillms like Bajrangi Bhaijaan, Kick, Ek Tha Tiger, Bodyguard, Wanted, Dabangg, New York et al but in his latest outing Tubelight he along with his super star Mr. Dictator Salman Khan’s calculated Ramzan Eid release plan has gone absolutely awry. The real tubelight oriented sparks are simply missing. Perhaps both Kabir & Salman’s over confidence let them down very badly. Need we say anything more.

The scripted scenario of Tubelight reveals that it is a story about a man’s unshakeable belief. Based on the adage, “Faith can move mountains, the film revolves around the life of a simpleton named Laxman Singh Bisht (Salman Khan). Because of his exceedingly gullible nature, he gets nicknamed as “tubelight”, thanks to his inability to grasp, understand & analyse things like others. The story starts off with a narration by Laxman Singh Bist, wherein he takes the audiences through his childhood to adulthood journey. While the world doesn’t take him seriously, the 1 man who always stands by Laxman Singh Bist and has complete faith in him, is none other than his younger brother Bharat Singh Bisht (Sohail Khan). 1 day, in the wake of the Indo – China war, the Indian Army invites applications from young Indians to join the army & serve the nation at the time of crisis. While Laxman Singh Bist gets rejected outright, Bharat Singh Bist gets chosen to be a part of the Indian army to go to the border to fight against the Chinese invasion. Life falls apart for Laxman Singh Bist when he gets to know that there is no news or contact with his brother Bharat Singh Bist and that he may have died in the war. That’s when Banney chacha (the Late Om Puri) tells Laxman Singh Bist to have faith that his brother Bharat Singh Bist will indeed return 1 day.

Director Kabir Khan’s Tubelight, perhaps his 1st ever flop movie in his long & checkered directorial career, is based on the premise of the official adaptation of the Mexican filmmaker Alejandro Gomez Monteverde’s war movie titled Little Boy. But the adapted writing part by Kabir Khan (story), Kabir Khan & Parveez Shaikh (screenplay) & Manurishi Chadha (dialogues) are very raw, extremely half – baked & totally convoluted, which ultimately ended up in Tubelight totally losing its fizz & thereby bombing on the Box – Office turnstiles on the release day itself. The film failed to live upto its title & eventually falls flat completely. In fact Tubelight just does not hold any kind of solid content to even remotely hold the viewers interest. That apart the film is not at all convincing. It also lacks the emotional connect with the audiences. Besides Pritam’s music is another let down except for one hummable track namely “Radio”. The only reedeeming factors of Tubelight are the film’s background score by Julius Packiam, cinematography by Aseem Mishra & editing by Rameshwar S Bhagat which are extra ordinaire.

Performace wise Salman Khan plays his part with utmost sincerity & dedication but it’s the convoluted script which fails him bitterly and he ends up delivering a very artificial performance. Even though Salman Khan tries his best to be naïve & affable, the film’s poor writing has taken its toil on him and he gives him in. Debutante Chinese actress Zhu Zhu can only boat of having a good screen presence and is endearing to watch, nothing more nothing less as the weak script fails to escalate the impact of her performance too. The Indian audiences will find it tough to relate to her half baked character in the film. On the other hand the little boy Master Matin Rey Tangu too is cute & endearing in his character, but doesn’t get to do much. Whereas Sohail Khan is convincing in his extended cameo kind of role and plays his part with sincerity. The Late Om Puri indeed delivers a memorable performance, while Shatrughan Sinha & Shah Rukh Khan’s cameo is impressive. A special noteworthy mention must be made of Sahil Mehta who has indeed given a good account of himself. While the rest of the actors like Isha Talwar, Yashpal Sharma & Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub are conving and help the film in moving forward.

Tail Piece: This Tubelight has certainly lost its fizz goes phuss.

Salman Khan’s Tubelight Distributors Left In Tears

Salman Khan & Ramzan Eid have been an unbeatable combination that has usually guaranteed Rs 200 to Rs 300 crore business at the Box – Office. And with Kabir Khan on board, one was expecting Tubelight to break records just like Bajrangi Bhaijaan. But, neither Ramzan Eid nor Kabir Khan’s directing chops brought any luck for Salman Khan starrer Tubelight. According to the trade buzz, the single screens that ran & are running Salman Khan’s Tubelight have suffered huge losses. It’s been said that 2 cinemas that screened the film in Ferozabad in Uttar Pradesh have lost an amount close to Rs 9.11 lakhs. Akshay To Take Over Bigg Boss???

Akshay Kumar’s spiralling superstardom threatens to hit a new high, what with reliable reports from the sources in the know insisting that the Toilet: Ek Prem Katha star will take over Bigg Boss from Salman Khan from the forthcoming season of the ongoing show. And if you are looking for a sensational squabble between the 2 superstars regarding the job on the hot seat, then look elsewhere. Apparently the transition from one superstar to the other is going to be “very smooth,”. Says the source, “Salman has been wanting to opt out from Bigg Boss for some years now. Every year, he announces he won’t do Bigg Boss as it impinges on his other commitments & makes a heavy demand on his time. But now, he is seriously not keen to go on. Akshay Kumar, with his huge connect with the masses, is seen as the best replacement.” While the nitty – gritty & details of the change are yet to emerge, it is very clear that it won’t be easy to get Akshay Kumar on board.
