Phool Waalon Ki Sair: An offering of communal unity at altar of secular India

November 19, 2018 by Nasheman

Array

When Syed Fariddudin Qutbi, the “khadim” (attendant) of the shrine of 13th century sufi saint Qutbuddin Bakhtiar Kaki in Meharauli, stepped out after offering a floral “chhatra” (a flower-embellished umberella) at the ancient Yogmaya temple located at a stone’s throw from the dargah, all he had to say was that in the small temple sanctum sanctorum suffused with a strong incense and jasmine fragrance, he felt the same tranquility and a “magnificent, invisible power” he feels at the dargah.

Part of the annual cultural festival “Phool Walon Ki Sair” (Festival of Flower Sellers), an initiative that promotes communal harmony and positive cultural exchanges since early the 1800s, many like Qutbi go beyond the bounds of religious identity, and encourage members of other communities to offer flowers and “pankhas” (fans) at places of worship that are considered not “their own”.

The roots of the festival go back to the reign of one of the last Mughal emperors and Bahadur Shah Zafar’s father, Akbar Shah II, who was buried next to the dargah.

Legend has it that when his son Mirza Jahangir was imprisoned on the orders of the British, Akbar Shah’s wife vowed that she would offer a blanket at the sufi saint’s dargah upon his release. As fate had it, Shah’s son was released and the blanket was offered. Upon imperial orders, floral offerings were also made at goddess Yogmaya’s temple, which sparked public enthusiasm, causing it to become an annual tradition.

The festival was stopped in the 1940s when the British started their polarising efforts in line with their “divide-and-rule policy” that led to deep rifts between India’s two major religious communities, Mirza Mohtaram Bakht, secretary of the Anjuman Sair-e-Gul Faroshan, the organisers of the fair, told IANS.

He said the festival was revived in 1961-62 by India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. It has, since then, been a regular occurrence and brings together hundreds of Delhi residents each year, Bakht said.

In today’s deeply polarised milieu where hate crimes against specific communities are just as rampant as the venom spewed against them on social media, the assimilating significance of the week-long festival takes a new turn.

“When our Hindu brothers offer a blanket of flowers at the dargah, members of the Muslim community take a step back and let them take the lead. Similarly, Muslim people are encouraged to offer a floral ‘chhatra’ to Devi Yogmaya. It’s a communion of hearts, and that can only happen if there’s ‘pakeezgi’ in people’s souls,” Qutbi told IANS, adding that he recommends extremists of all religions to at least experience other cultures once.

Rajnish Jindal, another resident of Mehrauli, who has been visiting the festival for 15 years, said that it was a matter of developing comfort with all religions and people from all walks of life.

“You go into a gurdwara, you find peace and comfort, that’s your ‘mahzab’ (faith); same is with a mosque or a temple or a church. It should be a matter of personal belief,” he said.

Not surprisingly, the path of “Phool Walon Ki Sair”, is often laden with thorns and threats.

“People say ‘tum karke toh dikhao, hum dekhte hai tum kaise karte ho’ (We’ll see how you do it); not everyone wants a secular nation that celebrates all its religions. It often happens covertly; 11th-hour permissions, indifference and excuses create hurdles for us, even if there is no direct visible opposition.

“We, however, give it back with our enthusiasm. Truth is always victorious. They can’t stop our caravan,” Bakht, a former geologist and a “proud Delhi-wallah”, said.

Kite flying competitions, processions, wrestling bouts, kabbadi and shehnai recitals mark the first four days of the seven-day festival, with offerings in the dargah and the temple earmarked for the fifth and sixth days.

This year, Delhi’s Lieutenant-Governor Anil Baijal offered the floral blanket at the dargah on Thursday, and Delhi government’s transport minister Kailash Gahlot offered a floral “chhatra” on Friday, along with members of both communities.

“Phool Walon Ki Sair” closed on Saturday with tableaus from over 11 states and a night-long qawwali singing programme.

Sara is star on ‘Koffee With Karan’ By Subhash K. Jha

November 19, 2018 by Nasheman

Mumbai Sara Ali Khan’s debut film “Kedarnath” is around the corner. But to me her debut on Karan Johar’s talkshow on Sunday night proved she’s already a star.

Poised, articulate, relaxed, witty. And very eager to embrace the camera — Ladies and Gentleman, a star is born.

Say “Hello to Sara Ali Khan” in the best episode of Karan’s show this season so far.

Father, Saif Ali Khan, and daughter looked more like co-stars on the couch that says a lot about how much younger the heroines are getting.

This could also be as Saif made a very bohemian dad on the show. He had quick answers to Karan’s unconventional queries about his unconventional relationship with his daughter.

And Sara was equally quick in giving it back to Saif as good as she got.

For once, Karan chose to tread on the sticky side of the road, asking Sara about her relationship with her father’s second wife Kareena Kapoor(we can’t call her stepmom, as Saif warned us that evening).

Sara didn’t mince words. She described her parents as “wild”. I would have to go with that. It takes a whole lot of wildness to get where Saif has in life.

To be actually sitting on that couch with his grownup daughter all set to make her debut as a leading lady, and who is just five to six years younger than his wife.

Full marks to Sara for calling a spade a spade. And wild, wild.

Oh yes, there was also a section about what Karan described as the “elephant in the room”. I found that to be a strange way to describe little cute Taimur whose pictures break the internet almost every day.

Interestingly, Karan had got video messages on Taimur from a bunch of prominent paparazzi photographers talking on Taimur.

Let’s face it. I would like to see Saif with Tamir on Karan’s couch soon. He is by far the most successful Khan in Saif’s family. Sara seemed refreshingly free of sibling jealousy. Not surprising, considering Taimur is young enough to be her child.

Karan called their family “modern”. I would not define this family as modern. Just happy to do their own thing unmindful of the repercussions.

To me the star of “Koffee With Karan” was Sara Ali Khan who seemed so comfortable with her dad, with her host and with the camera, not particularly in that order though.

But then orderliness is not a big virtue of this spontaneously bohemian family.

Kerala HC rejects anticipatory bail appil of activist Rehana Fathima

November 16, 2018 by Nasheman

The Kerala High Court Friday dismissed the anticipatory bail plea of activist Rehana Fathima, who had made an attempt to enter into Sabarimala when the temple was opened for monthly puja in October after the Supreme Court order allowing entry of women in the age group of 10 and 50 into the Lord Ayyappa shrine.

The activist was booked by the police in Pathanamthitta on the basis of a complaint filed by Radhakrishna Menon alleging some of her Facebook posts hurt religious sentiments.

She was booked under Section 295A of IPC (outraging religious feelings).

Anticipating arrest, she moved the high court seeking anticipatory bail.

Dismissing the bail plea, the court directed that the police can take appropriate steps in the case.

Fathima, a model and activist who was part of “Kiss of Love” movement in Kochi in 2014 against alleged moral policing, was among the two women who had reached the hilltop on October 19 but had to return before reaching the sanctum sanctorum following massive protests by Ayyappa devotees.

Fathima and Hyderabad-based journalist Kavitha were taken to the hills with heavy police protection.

Meanwhile, the high court has granted bail to six people arrested for allegedly attacking police and preventing devotees at Nilackal, near Pamba, when the temple doors were opened for monthly puja last month.

Several journalists were attacked by devotees when the temple was opened for six days on October 17 for the first time after the Supreme Court order.

On September 28, a five-judge Constitution bench of the Supreme Court, headed by then chief justice Dipak Misra, lifted the centuries-old ban on the entry of women of menstrual age into the shrine but a section of devotees is protesting the decision.

Sabarimala protests: Gender activist Trupti Desai still at Kochi airport

November 16, 2018 by Nasheman

Gender activist Trupti Desai and six other women, who arrived here on Friday to visit the Sabarimala temple amid strong protests by Hindu activists, were still at the airport after almost eight hours.

Desai and her group reached Kochi from Pune at around 4.45 a.m.

Angry Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Sangh Parivar activists protested outside the airport, forcing her to remain inside.

When Desai arrived, there were just 100 protesters. The number has now increased to over thousands who have taken position at every entry and exit gate both inside and outside the airport.

Top state BJP leaders have also arrived at the airport.

BJP spokesperson Shoba Surendran said: “We have to tell her to go back as we will not allow her to go out from here. Desai has got all the support from atheists like our Chief Minister who is determined to see that a lady gets to visit the temple.

“She is nothing but an activist who has scant respect for the tradition of Sabarimala. So it’s best that (Pinarayi) Vijayan sees that she is packed off from here at the earliest.”

Despite pleas from the police, Desai said she would not return without visiting the Lord Ayyappa shrine.

Meanwhile, speaking to the media from the Nilackal base camp near the Lord Ayyappa shrine, state Minister for Devasoms (that looks after temples) Kadakampally Surendran said the activist arrived in Kochi after she wrote to the Prime Minister and the Chief Ministers of Kerala and Maharashtra.

Senior police officials from Ernakulam district along with others from the district administration and Airport Authority were speaking to Desai, trying to persuade her to return to Mumbai.

Prior to her arrival, the activist wrote to Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan requesting for police protection right from the time she steps out of her plane at Kochi on Friday till she takes her return flight out of the state.

The temple is scheduled to open on Friday at 5 p.m. for two months.

The temple town has witnessed protests by Hindu groups and temple tantri since the September 28 Supreme Court verdict that allowed women of all ages to enter the temple that hitherto banned girls and women aged between 10 and 50.

The apex court on Tuesday refused to stay its earlier verdict.

Ranveer Singh & Deepika Padukone Finally Enter Into A Wedlock

Ranveer Singh & Deepika Padukone finally sealed the deal & got married in a traditional Chitrapur Saraswat style ceremony on 14th Nov, 2018. The Sindhi Anand Karaj ceremony took place on 15th Nov, 2018. The couple have been together since the year 2013 & finally announced their wedding in late Oct, 2018.

Ranveer Singh & Deepika Padukone tied the knot at Lake Como in Italy after dating for over 6 years.

They exchanged the rings post a Phool Muddi ceremony.

Singer Harshdeep Kaur performed on numbers like “Kala Sha Kala” at the sangeet.

Karan Johar took to Twitter to congratulate the happy couple. “Such a stunning gorgeous & beautiful couple! Nazar utar lo! Deepika Padukone & Ranveer Singh!! Badhai ho!!! Love you both!!! Here’s to a lifetime of love & joy!” he wrote.

So Ranveer Singh & Deepika Padukone are by now married after the traditional Chitrapur Saraswat style wedding at Lake Como, Italy. They solemnized their relationship after 6 years of dating each other. Ranveer Singh & Deepika Padokone had first met each other on the sets on Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Goliyon Ki Rasleela Ram-Leela.

The dress code for the ceremony for the guests was color white.

With the strict no photo policy at the VeerDeep Shaadi, fans may just have to rely on screenshots to satisfy their curiosity for a while. With the likes of drone interceptors in the sky & guests being made to wear special wrist bands & scan unique QR codes on their phones in order to gain entry, the security at the venue was tight. Deepika Padukone’s sister, Anisha Padukone changed her social media bio to reflect her status as the #Ladkiwale with a bride emoticon.

Shah Rukh Khan, Farah Khan & Sanjay Leela Bhansali reached the wedding venue by 9 am on the D – Day. They were amongst the few from the film fraternity who were a part of the official wedding. The guest list had mostly been restricted to family & close friends.

And the security arrangements were tight at the venue. From special wrist bands to patrolling boats to no mobile phone policy, every little detail had been taken care of. There were boats patrolling the area surrounding the wedding venue to decapitate any drone in the vicinity.

The couple had also requested singer Harshdeep Kaur to delete a photo that the singer had shared with her husband, by the lake, because they did not want any photos of the high profile wedding to surface online.

The mehendi ceremony which was held on Tues afternoon had both Ranveer Singh & Deepika Padukone donning Sabyasachi creations as the wedding party grooved to Harshdeep Kaur’s tunes. The designer himself was also present & the men also applied henna on their palms.

Deepika Padukone & Ranveer Singh wore similar rich shades of red & pink & the bride reportedly got misty-eyed more than once. The doting groom-to-be was by her side the whole time.

The couple was expected to have 2 wedding ceremonies. A Chitrapur Saraswat style wedding was slated to take place on the morning of 14thNov, 2018, since Deepika Padukone belongs to the Konkani speaking community originally from Karnataka. This was followed by a Sindhi style ceremony on 15th Nov, 2018, as Ranveer Singh naturally hails from a Sindhi Community.

For the Chitrapur Saraswat ceremony, Deepika Padukone was dressed in a traditional white & gold silk sari & wore a red lehenga on day 2. Ranveer Singh had donned a heavily embellished sherwani. The couple’s outfits were all a Sabyasachi Mukherji creations.

While most of them had speculated that the Ranveer Singh & Deepika Padukone’s wedding is taking place at Villa Del Balbianello, the venue was actually Casta Diva Resort & Spa located in Blevio village on the eastern side of the Lake Como.

The wet weather had indeed prompted the wedding planners to change the venue at the last minute.

The couple had officially exchanged rings post a Phool Muddi ceremony, while the couple had welcomed their guests personally at the entrance of the venue. Both the bride & the groom had worn western outfits. Deepika Padukone was in a white dress & Ranveer Singh in black. The engagement ceremony was followed by a formal sit – down dinner & the guests were also requested to not share any pictures on the social media platforms.

Day one of the wedding festivities had kicked off at Lake Como with the sangeet. Harshdeep Kaur & her band had set the mood just right with dance numbers like “Kala Sha Kala”, “Mehendi Hai Rachney Wali”, “Mehendi Ni Mehendi” & “Gur Naal Ishq Mitha”. Ranveer Singh had even taken to the floor to sing & dance to his Gunday number “Tune Maari Entriyaan”

If you were wondering what Ranveer Singh would be wearing on his big day, the clue perhaps lied in the Sabyasachi Mukherji bags that his stylist Nitasha Gaurav was spotted carrying on her way to Italy.

Deepika Padukone’s wedding ensemble was in a vibrant red with intricate thread work. Ranveer Singh, on the other hand, was seen in a gorgeous Kanjeevaram sherwani.

Deepika Padukone & Ranveer Singh’s wedding was the talk of the town & everyone had wanted to know every little detail of this celebrity wedding. But who do you think had made this dream wedding come true? Of course, a wedding planner & for Deepika Padukone & Ranveer Singh, the celebrity wedding planner was none other than Vandana Mohan, who had turned a fairy godmother. So who is Vandana Mohan? Well! She is a celebrity wedding planner in her own right

The wedding was captured for the posterity sake by the same crew that had filmed the wedding of Virat Kohli & Anushka Sharma in Tuscany. Vishal Punjabi’s The Wedding Filmer. TWF had also shot the wedding sequence in Deepika Padukone’s Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani.

Ranveer Singh’s hair stylist Nitasha Gaurav had posted an update on the couple on the social media platforms.

They had asked the lucky guests to not bring their cell phones to the ceremony. Considering the fact that it will be a destination wedding, there will be fewer people & all the arrangements will be in place. While the 2, in all likelihood, will share pictures with their fans eventually, they hoped that this step will help them guard their privacy”

Moreovrer 12 florists were specially flown in from Florence to decorate the wedding venue Villa Del Balbianello. The Lake Como resort where the guests were staying was about 45 minutes away from the wedding venue & the guests used the golf carts for transport within the location. With an outdoor floating pool, the location also boasted of an alfresco terrace overlooking the lake. Surrounded by the botanic park, the resort was spread across an area of about 26,000 sq meters. The location appeared to be the property of Lac De Come Hotels.

The groom-to-be then reportedly made a flamboyant entry on a seaplane with a seating capacity of 14 people. Chefs from Switzerland reportedly arrived at the venue. The wedding was reportedly held in the morning on 14th Nov, 2018 followed by a grand lunch.

Playback singer Harshdeep Kaur posted a photo of herself in a plane with a cryptic caption that read, “Off to a very special place for an even more special occasion. Arrivederci”.

The villa was closed for the public starting a day before the wedding day. The families were staying at a hotel 10 minutes from the venue because the venue itself didn’t have a boarding facility.”

“Since they are both from non-filmy families, they wanted a quiet wedding away from the prying eyes of the world.” The source went on to say that the Mumbai & above all the Bengaluru receptions are all set to be ritzy affairs, with the Mumbai reception to be held on 28th Nov, 2018 & the Bangalore reception yet to be finalized. The wedded couple had requested the guests not to get any gifts but donate instead to Deepika Padukone’s “Live Love Laugh Foundation”, which works towards raising awareness about the depression. “Both Ranveer Singh & Deepika Padukone are deeply committed to the cause & wanted to involve all their guests in the good deed.
