‘Kaala’: Realistic guide to dirty side of slum redevelopment

June 8, 2018 by Nasheman

Film ; Director: Pa.Ranjith; Cast: Rajinikanth, Huma Qureshi, Easwari Rao, Nana Patekar, Pankaj Tripathi and Anjali Patil; Rating: ***

Pa. Rajani’s “Kaala”, showcased in Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu, is a captivating socio-drama. It is a family-friendly tale with all the trappings of a South Indian fare. It is a superhero film of a different variety.

The film begins on a weak, unimpressive note that represents comic book graphics, but soon, it builds the momentum that is expected of a Rajinikanth film. It is a pot-boiler packed with Rajinikanth antics, albeit in diminishing proportion.

Nevertheless, it would appeal not only to his ardent fans and skeptical viewers but also to every “urban-poor” living in the slums of the city.

A fiction, set in Dharavi — Asia’s largest slum in Mumbai — the film cheerfully exposes the anguish of the “urban-poor” migrants living in the slums of the city.

It is their struggle against the land grabbers who are trying to exploit them in the garb of government schemes and city redevelopment.

The film is uncomfortable but convincing, illuminating the inconvenient sides of the development.

Haridada (Nana Patekar), a goon who has been elevated to the post of a Union Minister, along with his cronies is hell-bent on usurping Dharavi. With the help of his supporter Vishubhai (Sampath Raj) he tries to evacuate the people from there. How, Karikaalan (Rajinikanth) aka Kaala, a migrant from Tirunelveli, becomes a spike in Haridada’s plans, forms the crux of the tale.

The narrative keeps you hooked – wondering how far Kaala will go or how he will get out of his troubles.

The plot has its graph chalked to perfection, despite major edit jump-cuts. There is never a moment that drags. The dialogues are peppy with the right amount of humour, emotions and melodrama.

With age, Rajinikanth has mellowed, he plays his age and perfectly portrays the comical aspects of a petty gangster with all pride but no substance.

His action scenes definitely seem laboured. But fortunately for him since the director focused his energies on the tale and not on him, he was spared the embarrassment of performance.

Nana Patekar as the uncompromising and ambitious Haridada stands tall as he matches Rajinikanth in stature and demeanour. But then, this is not his story about his bumpy quest for more power and money.

Huma Qureshi as Zarina, the head of an NGO interested in uplifting the slum, Easwari Rao as Kaala’s wife Selvi, Anjali Patil as Charumati aka Toofani as an aggressive resident of the area and the girlfriend of Kaala’s son Lenin, are earnest.

The trio balance the gender scale with each one of them having their moments of on-screen glory.

Mounted with grand production values, the set showcasing Dharavi appears to be a synthetic and antiseptic place.

It is difficult to identify with it, minus the squalor.

The music that accompanies the action sequences is loud and adrenaline inducing. The songs, especially the rap numbers along with the hip-hop dance, mesh well into the narrative.

Overall, the film with the title which is used as a double entendre, is entertaining as a realistic guide to the dirty side of slum redevelopment.

It is understood that the finalized version will be presented to Information & Broadcasting Ministry (MIB). The decision was delayed in the previous meeting with a hesitation that the directive could “wreck the finances of Prasar Bharati, as the policy is likely to consider MIB’s direction to stop all e-auction of channels, according to the referred report. The broadcaster was asked earlier by MIB to review the continuation of FreeDish. As they had a feeling that only private channels will find this programme beneficial & the government would undergo recurring liability. FreeDish has a reach of 22 million subscribers. FreeDish was looking to adopt MPEG4 technology to carry more channels as it presently carries 80 channels only. The issue had been put into the sight of the Telecom Disputes Settlement Appellate Tribunal last year when channels reacted to its decision to suspend auctions after which an interim order allowed channels to continue to a pro rata basis till it decides on a new policy.

“Kaala” Not Release in Karnataka fans reach Tamil Nadu to see Film.

June 7, 2018 by Nasheman

Superstar Rajinikanth’s movie, Kaala, has released worldwide and Thalaivar fans are celebrating it like a festival. However, the scene in Karnataka is entirely different as the film is unofficially banned in the state.

Few pro-Kannada outfits protested against the release of the film because of Rajinikanth’s comments on Cauvery issue. It is reportedly said that many distributors and theatre owners have chosen not to release the film.

This has enraged Rajinikanth fans in the state, who were knocking at the empty ticket counters today. However, the fans have now decided to cross the border and go to neighboring states to watch the film.

Speaking to India Today, few fans in Bengaluru said they will travel all the way to Hosur (a city near Tamil Nadu-Karnataka border) to watch Kaala.

This is not a new phenomenon for Tamil cinema fans. When Kamal Haasan’s Vishwaroopam was banned in Tamil Nadu, fans from the state went all the way to Andhra Pradesh and Kerala to watch the film.

Earlier, the Karnataka High Court told the state government to give protection to the theatres releasing Kaala, but it looks like no theatre owner has come forward to release the film.

Notably, a pro-Kannada group stormed into a distributor office and damaged the properties. They also trashed the posters of Kaala and hit them with slippers.

Directed by Pa Ranjith, the film has Eswari Rao, Huma Qureshi, Nana Patekar and Samuthirakani in lead roles. Santhosh Narayanan has composed the music for the film.

‘Veere Di Wedding’ BANNED In Pakistan
Rhea Kapoor’s Veere Di Wedding starring Kareena Kapoor, Sonam Kapoor, Swara Bhasker & Shikha Talsania in pivotal roles was released on 1st Jun, 2018 in India but its release in the neighboring country looks difficult. The movie has been banned in Pakistan and the reason for the same is its BOLD content. The movie sure has been made to push the envelope. Its premise is women empowerment and therefore it is meant to engage a dialogue on women’s sexuality and touches upon societal pressure on getting girls married early and other facets of patriarchy. But looks like the censor board in Pakistan is not very happy with its content and therefore has deemed it vulgar, due to the fact that the lead actresses cuss openly throughout the film. The board feels that the movie is not appropriate for family viewing.
