Indonesian tsunami rescue efforts continue as country marks 2004 disaster
Nasheman News : Indonesian authorities on Wednesday resumed the search for 154 people missing after a tsunami hit the Sunda Strait coasts as the country commemorates the anniversary of the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami that killed around 230,000 people.
According to the latest official figures, which authorities say could increase, the death toll has reached at least 429, with more than 1,500 injured and some 16,000 displaced.
The rain continues to hamper rescue work on the fourth day of searching the ruins of collapsed buildings, vehicles and thick vegetation, reports Efe.
Experts believe the giant waves were caused by the collapse of part of Anak Krakatau volcano after it erupted in the Sunda Strait.
Fear of a new tsunami caused by the volcano’s continued activity has led officials to warn residents to avoid the coasts.
On Tuesday afternoon, hundreds of people fled to high ground in Java’s Sumur district during a new Anak Krakatau explosion.
Indonesia on Wednesday also commemorates the 167,799 people who lost their lives in the country in 2004 as a result of the December 26 Boxing Day tsunami caused by a magnitude-9.1 earthquake off the northern coast of Sumatra. The disaster also caused deaths in a dozen other nations around the Indian Ocean, killing around 230,000 people in total.
Various events will take place Wednesday night in the Sumatran province of Aceh, the hardest hit by the natural disaster, under the slogan “Build together, stay alert,” chosen for the 14th anniversary.
Indonesia is situated on the Pacific Ring of Fire, an area of great seismic and volcanic activity that is shaken every year by some 7,000 earthquakes, most of them moderate.
4 trains cancelled, 12 delayed due to fog
Nasheman News : At least four trains were cancelled and 12 delayed due to heavy fog in several parts of northern India, railway officials said.
According to Northern Railway, four trains departing from New Delhi were cancelled while 12 trains were delayed.
The cancelled trains included Mahabodhi Express, Gomti Express, Hari Har Express and Anand Vihar Sealdah Express.
Earlier, Northern Railways announced cancellation of 48 trains between December 2018 to February 2019, while reducing the frequency of 20 trains.
Fog disrupts air, rail traffic; air quality ‘severe’ in Delhi
Nasheman News : It was a cold foggy Tuesday morning in the national capital with visibility dropping to 50 metres affecting flight schedule and causing train cancellations.
The air quality in Delhi-NCR remained ‘severe’ for the fourth consecutive day as high humidity, low wind speed and drop in mercury prevented the dispersal of particulate matters.
According to SAFAR, the Air Quality Index (AQI) of the national capital was 423 — in the hazardous zone — as the minimum temperature was recorded at 5.6 degrees Celsius, two notches below the season’s average.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted shallow fog for the day with the maximum temperature likely to hover around 21 degrees Celsius.
At 8.30 a.m., the humidity was 100 per cent; visibility dropped to 50 metres at Palam with a spate of flight delays at the Delhi airport.
All departures at the the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) were suspended for over an hour as dense fog delayed 45 flights.
“Due to adverse weather conditions (fog) at Delhi, few of our flights have been affected,” the Jet Airways tweeted.
“The overall air quality in Delhi is severe,” System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting And Research (SAFAR) said in its daily pollution analysis.
“There is a significant fall in temperature which has brought down the boundary layer significantly with the huge amount of moisture beneath,” SAFAR said.
At the IGI Airport (T3) PM2.5 was recorded at 434. Many areas in the capital recorded Particulate Matter (PM10) levels way beyond the safe standard.
Experts advised against all physical activities outdoors and prescribed the use of N-95 or P-100 respirators when stepping out.
Among trains originating from here at least four were cancelled, including the Gomti express to Lucknow.
373 dead in Indonesia amid fear of more tsunamis
JThe death toll in a devastating tsunami that hit the coast of Indonesia after a volcanic eruption reached 373 on Monday, as rescuers continued digging through the rubble with bare hands and heavy machinery to find survivors amid warnings of more deadly waves in the coming days.
At least 128 people were still missing and nearly 1,500 were injured after the tsunami struck the Indonesian islands of Java and Sumatra almost without warning late Saturday, shortly after the Anak Krakatau volcano erupted in the Sunda Strait dividing the islands, said the National Board for Disaster Management (BNPB).
According to the figures released on Monday, at least 11,687 people were displaced by the tragedy, which damaged 611 houses, 69 hotels, 60 shops and 420 boats. President Joko Widodo visited the disaster zone to monitor rescue efforts and said he was praying for the victims, CNN reported.
Indonesia’s Ministry of Maritime Affairs said the tsunami was triggered when the Anak Krakatau volcano erupted in the Sunda Strait, prompting a series of underwater landslides. Most of the victims were Indonesians, but foreigners were also visiting the affected areas ahead of Christmas.
“Sixty four hectares of the slope collapsed … Our sensors did not sound early warning because they are for tectonic activity not volcanic activity,” spokesman Rahmat Djamaluddin said.
According to local media reports, the wave reached as high as three metres (10 feet). Eyewitnesses described fleeing for their lives as beachfront homes were swept away in the wave.
BNPB spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho warned that more tsunamis were possible as long as the volcano remained active.
“We are cautioning the people to remain cautious. Agencies are still continuing to analyze the root cause … the Krakatau volcano continues to erupt, which could potentially trigger another tsunami.”
Sutopo also raised the issue of Indonesia’s outdated tsunami buoy network which he said hasn’t worked properly since 2012. The country established the early warning system after the Indian Ocean tsunami struck on December 26, 2004, killing 226,000 people in 14 countries, including more than 120,000 in Indonesia.
This time, there was no warning from the sensors, said Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency head Dwikorita Karnawati.
A lack of warning was also blamed for the death toll in Indonesia’s October tsunami which killed over 2,000 people on the western coast of Sulawesi.
Just over 20 minutes after the eruption, a wall of water between 6 and 10 feet high hit the coastline of northwestern Java and southeastern Sumatra, washing away everything in its path along the shoreline, including people, boats and cars. Pandeglang in northern Java’s Banten province was the worst affected area.
Other hard-hit areas with casualties and damages were Serang, Lampung Selatan, Tanggamus and Pesawaran.
Footage shared on social media showed a large wave crashing into a tent in the Tanjung Lesung beach resort in west Java, where popular Indonesian rock band Seventeen was performing.
Members of the band were seen being swept away as the wave destroyed the stage.
Doctors Without Borders (Medecins Sans Frontieres) was providing assistance to local health services, while the UN offered humanitarian and logistical assistance, mainly for transport and mobile kitchens. The Indonesian Red Cross was providing first aid.
Anak Krakatau had been spewing ash and lava for months, with plumes reaching hundreds of feet in the air in the weeks leading up to the tsunami.
The volcano’s name means “Child of Krakatau”, the island rising from the sea in 1927, after one of the largest, most devastating eruptions in recorded history occurred at the original Krakatau volcano in 1883.
That eruption, which caused the original volcano to collapse into the sea, killed over 36,000 people in far-reaching tsunamis and sent so much ash into the sky that global temperatures fell.
This tsunami has added more deaths and misery to a year of tragedies in Indonesia, a vast archipelago of more than 17,000 islands and 260 million people that lies on the “Ring of Fire”, an area of great seismic and volcanic activity that is shaken every year by some 7,000 earthquakes.
8 killed in Haryana pileup due to fog
Nasheman News : Eight persons, including seven women, were killed in a vehicle pileup due to dense fog on the Rohtak-Rewari highway in Haryana on Monday, police said.
At least 10 others were injured in the accident in which over 20 vehicles were involved.
The injured were rushed to nearby hospitals. Two of them were said to be critical.
All the deceased were from Kirdodh village and were going to Najafgarh in Delhi in a jeep to condole the death of a relative there.
The jeep collided with a pick up vehicle and was hit by a speeding truck from behind, police said, adding that all deaths were on the spot.
India condoles loss of life in Indonesian tsunami
Nasheman News : External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on Monday expressed grief over the loss of life and damage caused by a tsunami that hit the coast Sunda Strait in Indonesia killing 281 people.
“My deepest condolences to the families of victims who lost their lives in the Tsunami… Our prayers are with them as we stand by our Indonesian brothers in this hour of grief,” she tweeted.
On Saturday, giant waves crashed into coastal towns on the islands of Sumatra and Java, killing at least 281 people and injuring 1,016.
It is thought that volcanic activity set off undersea landslides which in turn generated the killer waves. Saturday’s tsunami struck without a warning.
Anak Krakatau erupted again on Sunday, spewing ash and smoke. Death toll steadily rose through the day as more and more bodies were recovered.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday expressed his grief at the huge calamity. “Saddened by the loss of lives and destruction in Indonesia caused by the Tsunami after the eruption of a volcano.
“Condolences to the bereaved families and wishing the injured an early recovery. India is ready to assist our maritime neighbour and friend in relief work,” he tweeted last evening.
Social media went viral with images of video shot from a charter plane that captured the magnitude of the volcanic event in the Sunda Strait, between Sumatra and Java.
Coastal residents near Indonesia’s Anak Krakatau volcano were again warned on Monday to keep away from beaches amid fears it could trigger a new tsunami.

K’taka’s request for talks an “attempt to impede” court proceedings TN Minister
The Tamil Nadu government on Monday said Karnataka’s request for talks on the Mekedatu issue “is an attempt to impede” proceedings in the Supreme Court and asked it not to go ahead with the DPR on the project and also any other construction in the Cauvery river basin without its nod.
Shivakumar had said the project would help in regulating the judicious release of water so that excess water is not allowed to flow from the Mettur dam in Salem in Tamil Nadu into the sea needlessly as has had happened this year.
He had wanted to discuss with Palaniswami, the “misconceptions” over his state’s proposal for a dam.
In his letter to Shivakumar on Monday, Shanmugham reiterated Tamil Nadu’s stand that any construction or even preparation of a Detailed Project Report for the construction of a new reservoir, project “is a clear violation” of the February 16, 2018 apex court judgement on the Cauvery dispute involving two states.
“The request of the Government of Karnataka to discuss the Mekedatu Project with the Government of Tamil Nadu is an attempt to impede proceedings pending on the application filed on November 30, 2018 by Tamil Nadu and also contempt proceedings initiated against you and others in the Supreme Court on December 5, 2018 and the matter has now become sub-judice,” he told Shivakumar.
The apex Court on December 5 admitted Tamil Nadu’s plea against the nod granted to Karnataka for preparing a DPR for the proposed balancing reservoir-cum-drinking water project at Mekedatu across the Cauvery river.
A bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi had allowed the state’s plea which had said the permission was in utter disregard of the apex court’s February 16 verdict on the Cauvery dispute observing that no state can claim “exclusive ownership” of inter-state river water.
In his letter Monday, Shanmugham said the Karnataka government “in violation” of the February 16 verdict, had obtained permission from the Central Water Commission to go ahead for preparation of a DPR for the Mekedatu project, without informing and getting the concurrence of Tamil Nadu and other co-basin states.
It had not informed the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA), he added.
Shanmugham urged Shivakumar not to proceed in any manner with the preparation of a DPR for the Mekedatu project and not to take up any construction activities at any place in the Cauvery Basin of Karnataka without the prior consent of the Tamil Nadu government.
Any construction or even preparation of a DPR is a “clear violation” of the February 16 apex court verdict, he said.
“Hence, I request you to desist from a preparation of a Detailed Project Report for Mekedatu project,” he said and urged the upper riparian state to comply with the February 16 judgement of the apex court in “letter and spirit.”
In its February 16 verdict, the Supreme Court had hiked Karnataka’s share of water from Cauvery by 14.75 tmcft and reduced Tamil Nadu’s quantum while compensating it by allowing extraction of 10 tmcft groundwater from the river basin.
Maintaining that the issue of drinking water has to be placed on a “higher pedestal”, the top court enhanced Karnataka’s share from 270 tmcft to 284.75 tmcft on account of water for drinking and domestic requirements, while lowering Tamil Nadu’s share of water from 419 tmcft to 404.25 tmcft.
Karnataka had recently proposed a reservoir on Cauvery at Mekedatu, which has been steadfastly opposed by the Tamil Nadu government, besides all opposition parties in the state, expressing fear that it would affect farmers dependent on the river for irrigation.
