Prithvi Shaw dropped from Mumbai’s Vijay Hazare squad player asks ‘what more do I have to see?’

Prithvi Shaw dropped from Mumbai's Vijay Hazare squad, player asks 'what more do I have to see?'

New Delhi: Out-of-favour India opener Prithvi Shaw was on Tuesday dropped from Mumbai’s squad for the upcoming Vijay Hazare Trophy as his fortunes continued to nosedive, forcing the beleaguered player to ask “what more do I have to see?”

The tournament begins on December 21.

The 25-year-old, who was once hailed as a generational talent and scored a hundred on Test debut, has had a season to forget.

He was dropped in the middle of Ranji Trophy league stage on fitness and disciplinary grounds, before returning for the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) that Mumbai won. He also went unsold at the IPL auction in November.

His performance in the premier domestic event was not eye-catching but he did make a couple of 40s and as many 30s over the course of the event.

“Tell me God, what more do I have to see? If 65 innings, 3399 runs at an average of 55.7 with a strike rate of 126 (in Vijay Hazare), I’m not good enough. But I will keep my faith in you and, hopefully, people still believe in me, because I will come back for sure. Om Sai Ram,” Shaw wrote in his Instagram story.

Shreyas Iyer will captain the 17-man squad picked for the first three games. Following the SMAT, Iyer had said sky was the limit for Shaw if he worked on his work ethics.

Ajinkya Rahane, who was the star batter for Mumbai in SMAT, had captained the 50-over side last season. Veteran spinner Shams Mulani also doesn’t feature in the squad alongside Shaw.

India T20 skipper Suryakumar Yadav is also part of the side.

Mumbai open their campaign against Karnataka in Ahmedabad on December 21.

Squad: Shreyas lyer (Captain), Ayush Mhatre, Angkrish Raghuvanshi, Jay Bista, Suryakumar Yadav, Shivam Dube, Suryansh Shedge, Siddhesh Lad, Hardik Tamore, Prasad Pawar (WK), Atharva Ankolekar, Tanush Kotian, Shardul Thakur, Royston Dias, Juned Khan, Harsh Tanna, Vinayak Bhor.

Indian Navy officer gets bail in Korea human trafficking case

December 18, 2024 by Nasheman

Mumbai: A court here has granted bail to Indian Navy officer Braham Sharma, arrested for alleged involvement in trafficking people to South Korea on forged documents, noting that he has been under detention since June 2024 and the trial is yet to commence.

Police had claimed that Lieutenant Commander Sharma was the mastermind of a gang that allegedly sent 8 to 10 people to the East Asian country using bogus papers and charged Rs 10 lakh per case.

Sharma’s bail was allowed by additional sessions judge V M Pathade on December 13. A detailed order was available on Tuesday.

Sharma, in his bail application, had claimed he was innocent and was falsely implicated in the crime.

The accused stated that he was not a beneficiary of the crime money.

The investigation culminated in filing a charge-sheet and hence his further detention is unwarranted, Sharma’s plea said and pointed out that a co-accused has been granted bail.

The prosecution opposed the bail contending that Sharma played a major role in committing the crime, unbecoming of a Naval officer.

Police have alleged that Sharma’s associate and co-accused Vipin Dagar, also a Navy officer, was found in possession of 14 Indian passports in the name of different persons, a stamp machine (purchased from Vishakhapatnam to make fake stamps), 108 rubber stamps of distinct establishments, and a rubber sheet used for creating forged and fabricated documents to be used as genuine for obtaining passport/visa.

Sharma had collected such documents through another co-accused and sent them to Dagar.

He used to receive money in bank accounts operated by his mother and grandmother, the police said.

The prosecution argued that sufficient material was collected by the investigating agency, disclosing Sharma’s active participation in the entire activities leading to the commission of the offences.

The court stated that the charge sheet in the case was filed by police.

Sharma has been under detention since June 29, 2024, and the other co-accused persons were granted bail, the court stated.

“The trial is yet to commence, there is no likelihood of the trial being concluded in the near future, ” the court observed while allowing bail for Sharma.

Police had said earlier that Vipin Dagar prepared forged documents and forwarded them to the Korean consulate. He was taking instructions from the mastermind Braham Sharma, who was arrested from Lonavala.

The MRA police station in Mumbai had registered a case against five persons for cheating and forgery under the Indian Penal Code, and the Passport Act.

BJP inquiring into absence of MPs during voting on simultaneous elections bill in LS

BJP inquiring into absence of MPs during voting on simultaneous elections bill in LS

New Delhi: The BJP is inquiring into the absence of its nearly 20 MPs from the Lok Sabha during the voting on Tuesday on the introduction of the bill for simultaneous elections.

As the party had issued a whip asking all its members to be present in the House, the absence of so many MPs has irked its leadership, sources said. However, they added that a number of MPs had informed in advance about their absence due to various personal and work-related reasons.

“We are definitely looking into the reasons behind their absence. Quite a few had genuine reasons,” a senior leader said.

Some MPs, including Union minister C R Patil, were engaged with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s public event in Rajasthan, the sources said.

Four to five MPs from BJP allies were also not present during the voting, they said, adding that this is also being looked into.

Two bills that lay down the mechanism to hold simultaneous elections were introduced in the Lok Sabha after a fiery 90-minute debate on Tuesday.

The opposition alleged that the move was “dictatorial” and impinged on states’ powers even as Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal refuted such concerns.

The Constitution (129th Amendment) Bill was introduced in the Lok Sabha by Meghwal after a division of votes. As many as 269 members voted in favour of the Bill and 198 against it.

Throwing youths into war zone matter of shame: Priyanka Gandhi slams UP CM over ‘Israel’ remarks

Throwing youths into war zone matter of shame: Priyanka Gandhi slams UP CM over 'Israel' remarks
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra

New Delhi: In a swipe at Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Tuesday said throwing youths into the war zone in Israel for “employment” is not an achievement but a matter of shame.

Her remarks came after Adityanath took a veiled jibe at Priyanka Gandhi for carrying a handbag to Parliament that had ‘Palestine’ emblazoned on it.

“Yesterday, a Congress leader was seen walking around Parliament carrying a Palestine bag, while we are sending our youth to Israel for opportunities.

“So far, more than 5,600 youth from Uttar Pradesh have gone to Israel for construction work. Every youth gets free food and accommodation besides a monthly salary of Rs 1.5 lakh there. There is also full guarantee of safety,” Adityanath said on the second day of the Winter Session of the Uttar Pradesh Assembly.

Hitting back at Adityanath, Priyanka Gandhi said those who sent Uttar Pradesh’s youths to war-torn Israel instead of providing them employment are calling it their achievement.

“They are neither aware of the unemployment situation in the state nor do they understand the pain of those youths and their families,” she said.

According to reports, the youths who have gone to work in Israel are saving their lives by hiding in bunkers and the companies are exploiting them, she said in a post in Hindi.

“Their families are always scared. Our promising youths are forced to risk their lives for employment because you cannot provide employment,” Priyanka Gandhi said. “Throwing our youths into the war zone for employment is not something to pat on the back but a matter of shame.”

In his remarks, Adityanath said, “Recently, the ambassador of Israel visited Uttar Pradesh and said they want more youths from the state, as they are doing good work there. The world is now acknowledging the skills of our youths. When these youths send money home, they contribute to the development of the state. We should congratulate them.”

On Tuesday, Congress’ Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi was seen carrying a cream-coloured handbag to Parliament on which it was written “Bangladesh Ke Hindu Aur Isaiyon Ke Saath Khade Ho” (stand with the Hindus and Christians of Bangladesh).

Several Congress MPs led by Priyanka Gandhi also staged a protest on the Parliament premises demanding justice for Hindus and Christians facing atrocities in Bangladesh.

This came a day after she expressed solidarity with the people of Palestine by carrying a handbag with ‘Palestine’ emblazoned on it.

India to host World Boxing Cup Final in November 2025

December 18, 2024 by Nasheman

New Delhi: India is set to host the World Boxing Cup Final in November next year, reaffirming its support for the breakaway World Boxing (WB) body.

The Boxing Federation of India (BFI) will also simultaneously host the third World Boxing Congress, which will include elections for the Presidency and Executive Board.

The tournament will be the first international event hosted by the BFI after opting to join the new governing body earlier this year.

The last time BFI hosted an international event was the International Boxing Association (IBA) Women’s World Boxing Championship in 2023.

“It is a proud moment for India to be recognised by World Boxing for hosting such prestigious events. This opportunity not only highlights India’s organisational excellence but also underscores our unwavering commitment to ensuring boxing remains an integral part of the Olympic movement,” BFI President Ajay Singh said.

“We are honoured to contribute to the sport’s legacy and look forward to welcoming the global boxing community to India in 2025,” Singh added.

The date of the tournament will be confirmed in January.

The first World Boxing Cup of the year will be held in Brazil in March, followed by competitions in Germany, Kazakhstan and India.

“After the huge success of our first World Boxing Cup series in 2024, it is fantastic that we have four such strong bids to host the competition in 2025. I would like to thank the National Federations of Brazil, Germany, Kazakhstan and India for their ongoing support and commitment,” World Boxing President Boris van der Vorst said.

“I am also very grateful to the Boxing Federation of India for its ongoing support in bidding to host both a World Boxing Cup and our next Congress in 2025 in New Delhi,” he added.

WB is a breakaway international federation aiming to secure recognition from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and ensure that boxing remains on the Olympic roster.

Formed in April last year after the IBA was stripped of its status, WB has reached 60 members as the IOC is expected to take a call on the recognition early next year.

Satellite beams turned off over India: Elon Musk rejects claim Starlink being used in Manipur

'Satellite beams turned off over India': Elon Musk rejects claim Starlink being used in Manipur

Imphal : SpaceX founder Elon Musk said Starlink satellite beams were turned off over India, reacting to claims that its device was being used in restive Manipur.

The security forces recently seized some internet devices along with arms and ammunition during a raid in Keirao Khunou in Imphal East district.

The Spear Corps of the Indian Army had shared photos of the items seized on X, and social media users were quick to note that one of the devices had a “Starlink logo” on it.

Pointing to it, an X user posted, “@Starlink is being used by terrorists. Hope, Elon @elonmusk looks into it and help control misuse of this technology.”

Musk replied, “This is false. Starlink satellite beams are turned off over India.”

Among the items seized from Keirao Khunou were “one internet Satellite Antenna, one internet Satellite Router and 20 meters (approx.) of FTP cables”, according to the state police.

The recovery of the Starlink-like device has also prompted agencies to investigate how the equipment found its way to the strife-torn state, officials had said.

Musk’s Starlink, which provides satellite internet services, does not have a licence to operate in India.

More than 250 people have been killed and thousands rendered homeless in ethnic violence between Meiteis and Kuki-Zo groups in Manipur since May last year.

India’s official entry ‘Laapataa Ladies’ out of Oscars 2025 race

December 18, 2024 by Nasheman

India's official entry 'Laapataa Ladies' out of Oscars 2025 race

New Delhi: “Laapataa Ladies”, India’s official entry in the Best International Feature category at the 97th Academy Awards, is out of the Oscars race.

The Hindi film, directed by Kiran Rao, is not part of the shortlist of 15 features that will be vying for a spot in the final five, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) announced on Wednesday morning.

However, British-Indian filmmaker Sandhya Suri’s “Santosh”, starring Indian actors Shahana Goswami and Sunita Rajwar, representing the UK, has made it to list that also includes France’s “Emilia Pérez”, “I’m Still Here” (Brazil), “Universal Language” (Canada), “Waves” (Czech Republic), “The Girl with the Needle” (Denmark), and “The Seed of the Sacred Fig” from Germany.

The other contenders in the category are “Touch” (Iceland), “Kneecap” (Ireland), “Vermiglio” (Italy), “Flow” (Latvia), “Armand” (Norway), “From Ground Zero” (Palestine), “Dahomey” (Senegal), and “How to Make Millions before Grandma Dies” (Thailand).

The final Oscar nominations will be announced on January 17.

According to the Academy, 85 countries or regions had submitted films that were eligible for consideration in the International Feature Film category for the 97th Academy Awards.

“Santosh”, which marks Suri’s feature directorial debut, revolves around a newly widowed housewife (Goswami) who inherits her late husband’s job as a police constable and becomes embroiled in the investigation of a young girl’s murder.

India’s official entry “Laapataa Ladies” (“Lost Ladies” in English) is a gently subversive feminist drama which is set in rural India in the early 2000s. Sneha Desai wrote the screenplay and dialogues of “Laapataa Ladies”, based on a story by Biplab Goswami. Divyanidhi Sharma penned additional dialogues.

It follows two brides who get swapped on the day of their wedding during a train ride. It stars Nitanshi Goel and Pratibha Ranta as the brides Phool and Jaya, respectively, with Sparsh Shrivastav playing the hapless groom in search of his wife.

Chhaya Kadam, Ravi Kishan, and Geeta Agrawal Sharma also round out its cast.

“Laapataa Ladies”, which had its world premiere at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), released in theatres on March 1 to great reviews. It is backed by Rao’s Kindling Productions, Aamir Khan Productions, and Jyoti Deshpande of Jio Studios.

In September, the Film Federation of India (FFI) unanimously chose “Laapataa Ladies” as India’s official entry to the Oscars from a list of 29 films, including Bollywood hit “Animal”, Malayalam National Award winner “Aattam” and Cannes winner “All We Imagine As Light”.

At the time, the 13-member all-male jury of FFI courted controversy on social media for their citation about the film. Many on social media said the brief went against the message the film was trying to convey.

The citation by the federation read: “Indian women are a strange mixture of submission and dominance. Well-defined, powerful characters in one world, a Laapataa Ladies (Hindi) captures this diversity perfectly, though in a semi-idyllic world and in a tongue-in-cheek way.”

Besides “Santosh”, “Anuja” is another film with an Indian connect that has advanced to the next stage of the Oscars. It is one of the 15 films to be selected in the Live Action Short category.

The New Delhi-set short film follows a gifted nine-year-old Anuja, who must make a choice between education and factory work alongside her sister – a decision that will shape both their futures. It stars Sajda Pathan and Ananya Shanbhag.

“Anuja” is directed by Adam J Graves and Suchitra Mattai, and has two-time Oscar winning producer Guneet Monga on board as executive producer and Hollywood star-writer Mindy Kaling as producer.

On Wednesday morning, the Academy also announced shortlists in eight other categories: Documentary Feature Film, Documentary Short Film, Makeup and Hairstyling, Music (Original Score), Music (Original Song), Animated Short Film, and Sound and Visual Effects.

“Lagaan”, set in the pre-independence era, was the last Indian film to enter the top five nominations in the best international feature film category (formerly called best foreign film) at Oscars 2002.

Only two other films have previously made it to the final five and they are the Nargis-starrer “Mother India” and Mira Nair’s “Salaam Bombay!”

Last year, “Naatu Naatu”, the peppy, foot-tapping chartbuster from SS Rajamouli’s Telugu period action film “RRR”, won the Academy Award in the best original song category along with “The Elephant Whisperers”, directed by Kartiki Gonsalves and produced by Monga’s Sikhya Entertainment, winning the Oscar in the Best Documentary Short Film category.

Late night host and comedian Conan O’Brien will host the Academy Awards on March 2 at the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood, Los Angeles.

Rahul slams govt over trade deficit touching all-time high

Rahul slams govt over trade deficit touching all-time high
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi (PTI)

New Delhi : Slamming the Modi government, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday said prioritising crony businesses over play-fair ones leads to weakened manufacturing sector, depreciating currency, record high trade deficits, high interest rates, falling consumption and soaring inflation.

Tagging a media report which said that trade deficit and imports are at an all-time high, Gandhi hit out at the government.

“What happens when a government prioritises crony businesses over play-fair businesses?” Gandhi said.

“Result: Weakened manufacturing sector, depreciating currency, record high trade deficits, high interest rates, falling consumption and soaring inflation,” he said in a post on X.

After recording double-digit growth in October, India’s exports in November contracted by 4.85 per cent year-on-year to USD 32.11 billion, while the trade deficit widened to an all-time high of USD 37.84 billion due to record surge in gold imports.

According to the commerce ministry data, imports rose by 27 per cent year-on-year to a record USD 69.95 billion in November due to high inbound shipments of vegetable oil, fertiliser, and silver.

Gold imports during the month under review soared to an all-time high of USD 14.8 billion as against USD 3.5 billion in November 2023.

Cumulatively, during April-November this fiscal, exports increased by 2.17 per cent to USD 284.31 billion and imports by 8.35 per cent to USD 486.73 billion.

Trade deficit, the difference between imports and exports, during April-November widened to USD 202.42 billion from USD 170.98 billion during April-November 2023.
