Indian Arrows ready to take on the best: Pinto
[Nasheman news] Kolkata The development at the grassroots level must be strong for any footballing nation to rise through the ranks and that is exactly what India aims at as it takes baby steps in the soccer world.
The success of Indian Arrows is definitely a step in that direction and head coach Floyd Pinto is elated.
The Youth Development Programmes (YDP) project of AIFF, which majorly comprises of boys who played in the Under-17 World Cup and some talented 16-year-olds, saw 11 players being called for the U-23 national camp for the AFC Qualifiers.
Speaking to IANS, Pinto said that the call-ups were truly deserved and the kids must take a step at a time and make the opportunities count as the Super Cup beckons.
“The 21 points in the I-League is a testament to the potential of youth in football. Surpassing last season’s numbers was a good feeling indeed. Ending the season with a win against the mighty Mohun Bagan at the majestic Salt Lake Stadium was an indicator that the boys are ready to compete at the highest level against the best teams in the country,” he smiled.
Commenting on the significance of the upcoming Super Cup, he said: “The Super Cup is another opportunity and platform to showcase the abundance of talent, capability and ever-improving competency of this youthful Arrows side.
“The boys truly believe that they are in it to compete, and not just make up the numbers.”
Talking about the chosen 11, Pinto is filled with a sense of pride.
“We felt a sense of pride and achievement. It is the next logical step in their development towards the goal of representing the country at the senior level,” he expressed.
Commenting on Mahesh Gawli’s contribution, Pinto said: “He has brought in experience of highest level. He has always had a calm influence under pressure, and adds robust work ethic to the Arrows setup.”
Swiss Open: Riya Mookerjee qualifies for main draw
[Nasheman news] Basel (Switzerland) Young India shuttler Riya Mookerjee has qualified for the main draw of the Yonex Swiss Open.
In her qualifying match, 19-year-old Mookerjee defeated Laura Sarosi of Hungary 21-15, 21-10 in the 30-minute affair late on Tuesday. She will take on Linda Zetchiri in the first round of the main draw.
Meanwhile, the Indian men’s doubles pair comprising Pranaav Jerry Chopra and Chirag Shetty got the better off Chinese Taipei combo of Lee Fang-chih and Lu Chia-Pin 21-15, 17-21, 21-19 in 51 minutes.
Another Indian pair of Krishna Prasad Garaga and Dhruv Kapila registered a hard-fought 21-17, 19-21, 21-18 victory over Germany’s Bjarne Geiss and Jan Colin Volker.
Cristiano hat trick powers Juventus over Atletico
[Nasheman news] Turin (Italy) Cristiano Ronaldo notched a hat trick to lead Juventus 3-0 over Atletico Madrid for a 3-2 aggregate victory in their Champions League round-of-16 tie.
Atletico, whose Wanda Metropolitano stadium is the venue for this year’s final, won the first leg 2-0 and took a conservative approach to Tuesday night’s duel at Turin’s Allianz Stadium, where the home side went for goal from the starting whistle.
Juve’s Giorgio Chiellini put the ball in the Atletico net in the 4th minute, but the goal was called back for a Ronaldo foul on goalkeeper Jan Oblak, reports Efe news.
Atleti did an admirable job of keeping their shape, yet the pressure continued to build and the breakthrough came in the 27th minute, when Ronaldo got his head to Federico Bernardeschi’s cross and beat Oblak to cut the visitors’ edge in half.
Cristiano threatened twice more before half-time: a bicycle kick and another header that both went wide and the teams went to the dressing rooms with the tie still in the balance.
Three minutes into the second half, Ronaldo’s header off Joao Cancelo’s cross drove Oblak back into the net. Though the keeper made the stop, enough of the ball crossed the line for the referee to signal goal.
Both coaches made changes. Atletico’s Diego Simeone pulled Thomas Lemar in favour of Angel Correa and Bianconeri manager Massimiliano Allegri opted to replace Leonardo Spinazzola with Paulo Dybala.
The match then settled into an extended quiet stretch until the 80th minute, when Allegri took the bold step of sending in 19-year-old Moise Kean, the star of last week’s Serie A win against Udinese.
Kean had a chance to score the winner, but failed.
With five minutes left in regulation, Correa brought down Bernardeschi in the box and the referee awarded a penalty.
Ronaldo, who dispatched Juve from the spot last season for Real Madrid, fooled Oblak and converted to set off delirium among the 40,000-plus in the stands at the Allianz.
BCCI will speak to IPL teams on workload at right time: Vinod Rai
[Nasheman news] New Delhi India skipper Virat Kohli spoke about the need to manage the workload of players during the Indian Premier League (IPL), keeping in mind the upcoming World Cup. He said this during the Test series against West Indies in October 2018.
While the issue surfaced during the meeting between the SC-appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA) and the team management during the second Test of the Windies series in Hyderabad in October 2018, there wasn’t any clarity on the issue.
But speaking to IANS, CoA chief Vinod Rai has cleared the confusion among not just players but also some of the IPL franchises, which had said they weren’t briefed on managing workload of the Indian stars by the Indian board.
“The BCCI (as a team) is keeping a watch on the matter and will speak to the franchises at the right time. We have a team, which is keeping track of this,” he said.
Interestingly, former India skipper MS Dhoni recently remarked that he did not see any reason why players be rested during the IPL.
“Bowling four overs won’t make you tired. The four overs actually keeps you at your best, you are bowling yorkers, bowling the variation and playing under pressure. I feel bowlers can still play the whole of IPL. But what they need to manage is what they eat, when they sleep and wake up.
“I would like them to be at their best when it comes to the skill factor. I always felt IPL was the best time to get in shape because I had a lot of time. I was playing only three and a half hours every third day and it gave me time to spend in the gym,” the Chennai Super Kings skipper said.
Speaking to IANS, a senior BCCI official said it was a situation that needed clarity. “A player is paid Rs 5-7 crore. They are your main guys and know their workload. Is it not incumbent on them as players to be responsible and decide whether club comes first for them or the country, if the theory of excessive workload is correct. If their load is huge, should not they prioritise the country over the club earnings?” he remarked.
India pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar recently spoke about the need of looking at workload management during the second half of the IPL. “That’s there in our minds. It will come into play after the first half of IPL, six-seven matches, then we can know how we can approach the second half of IPL and what we need to do to remain fit for the World Cup. There isn’t a surety for anything. Yes, there is something which is mind. If I feel I am tired, then I can take rest. Of course, it’s up to the franchise,” he said.
“I am sure they will cooperate with each and every player because the World Cup is a very important for us and the BCCI may also talk to them,” the pacer said.
India look to seal off World Cup preparation with series win against Australia at Kotla
[Nasheman news] New Delhi This series was billed as the last chance for India to experiment with their ODI squad before going into the 2019 World Cup in England, starting May 30. But coming into the last game of the series at the Ferozeshah Kotla against Australia on Wednesday, Virat Kohli and boys will also have pride at stake with the series level at 2-2.
Losing an ODI series at home will definitely not be ideal preparation for a team touted as one of the favourites to win the World Cup.
The series started with the home team showing complete domination in the first two games, before Aaron Finch and boys made a comeback with a quality win in Ranchi. But not done with registering just a win, the Aussies showed that they are here to make a statement as they chased down India’s total of 358 with 4 wickets in their kitty.
Ashton Turner was the star of the show for sure as he hit an unbeaten 84 off just 43 balls to take the visitors home at the PCA Stadium on Sunday. But more than the loss to Australia, it was the inability to defend 358 that will give Kohli sleepless nights. Yes, there was due on the outfield under lights and that made bowling difficult for India’s wrist spinners, but then, they are professionals and must cope with conditions on offer.
While the bowling left a lot to be desired, the opening partnership between Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan augurs well for the team going into the showpiece event. While the two had looked a little out of sync in the previous games, Rohit (95) and Dhawan (143) showed that the top-order is in for business.
But the question mark over the no.4 slot remains unsolved and former India skipper Sourav Ganguly rightly said that the spot is still up for grabs as Ambati Rayudu failed to drive home the advantage this series.
The Mohali ODI can’t be counted as the top two batted till the 31st over and after that it was more about swinging the bat to glory. But it will be interesting to see if Kohli continues to push KL Rahul in at no.3 and comes in himself at the fourth spot. The move didn’t work in the fourth ODI as the platform was set for the batsmen to go for the kill and it was more about smashing the ball than building an innings.
Another area that needs to be looked at is the spot of the wicket-keeper. While all is good till MS Dhoni is around, Rishabh Pant left a lot to be desired with his glovework in Mohali. Two stumpings that should have been completed with utmost ease were missed, let alone Pant’s failure to handle the low bounce at times. While it is no worry at present as Dhoni is only resting for these two games, it is a matter that will need immediate attention if Dhoni indeed walks into sunset post the World Cup.
The pace bowling department might enjoy some little movement upfront with some rain in the air in the Capital. But even without that, the fast bowling department has done its job and they will once again look to hold fort at the Kotla.
The Indians decided to give training a miss on Tuesday and that shouldn’t be too much of a worry as the boys have been playing non-stop. The wicket at the Kotla is once again expected to be a high scoring one with turn coming into the game in the second half.
For the Australians, it will be about once again showing the world that this team has regrouped well and mean business going into the World Cup. With the likes of Steve Smith, David Warner and Mitchell Starc not even part of the squad, this is ominous signs.
To come down to India and challenge the Men in Blue in almost every game is no mean feat and they will once again look to sign off on a high because after all, the Indians are touted as one of the favourites to win the trophy.
Squads: India: Virat Kohli (Captain), Shikhar Dhawan, Rohit Sharma, Ambati Rayudu, Kedar Jadhav, Vijay Shankar, Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Yuzvendra Chahal, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Rishabh Pant (Wicket-Keeper), Mohammed Shami, Ravindra Jadeja.
Australia squad: Aaron Finch (Captain), Usman Khawaja, Shaun Marsh, Peter Handscomb, Glenn Maxwell, Ashton Turner, Marcus Stoinis, Alex Carey (Wicket-Keeper), Pat Cummins, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Jhye Richardson, Kane Richardson, Jason Behrendorff, Nathan Lyon, Adam Zampa, D’Arcy Short.
Australia beat India in 4th ODI, level series
[Nasheman news] Mohali Australia rode a powerful batting effort to defeat India by four wickets in the fourth On-Day International (ODI) and level the five-match series at 2-2, here on Sunday.
Chasing a formidable target of 359 runs, Peter Handscomb’s maiden ODI century and half-centuries from Usman Khawaja and Ashton Turner took the visitors past the line with 13 balls to spare.
The Australians chase was off to a rocky start as Aaron Finch was bowled by Indian pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumnar in the very first over.
Jasprit Bumrah dealt another blow when he sent back Shaun Marsh in the fourth over with an excellent fuller length delivery that uprooted the off-stump.
However, that was destined to be the only bit of celebration for the Indian players. The capacity crowd at the IS Bindra Stadium witnessed laying of the foundation for a successful chase by Khawaja and Handscomb with a 192-run stand in 178 balls.
Handscomb scored 117 runs off 105 deliveries, hitting eight boundaries and three sixes along the way. Khawaja’s 91 runs came off 99 balls and included seven hits to the fence.
Bumrah finally broke the partnership when Khawaja tried to pull a short pitched delivery just outside the off-stump only to see Kuldeep Yadav latch on to the top edge at fine leg.
Although the hosts claimed a couple of more wickets over the next eight overs, Turner smashed a quickfire half-century lower down the order to turn the match decisively in Australia’s favour.
The all-rounder remained unbeaten on a breezy 84 with five boundaries and six hits into the stands studding his 43-ball stay at the crease.
Bumrah was the only Indian bowler who could trouble the Australian batsmen with figures of 3/63 in his 8.5 overs.
Earlier, India rode scintillating knocks from openers Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan to post a mammoth 358/9.
Both Dhawan (143 off 115) and Rohit (95 off 92) were in brilliant touch right from the start and also recorded the highest opening stand (193) for India against Australia. The duo hammered every visiting bowler before Rohit fell, five short of his hundred.
But Dhawan maintained his aggressiveness, taking every bowler to cleaners.
The Indian openers started cautiously before they accelerated the innings to race away to 55 runs in just 9.2 overs. The duo seemed brutal as most bowlers were hammered to every part of the park and lifted the team to 100 runs in 17.2 overs.
Continuing their sensible and destructive play, the duo took India near the 200-run mark before pacer Jhye Richardson came with a big breakthrough. He sent back a well-settled Rohit in the 31st over.
Rohit’s knock contained seven boundaries and two sixes.
Dhawan, however, continued attacking the Aussies as India crossed the 250-run mark in next six overs. Pat Cummins gave his side some respite as he bowled out Dhawan in the 38th over.
India lost skipper Virat Kohli (7 off 6) with the scorecard reading 266/3.
In the last 10 overs, stumper Rishabh Pant (36 off 24), Lokesh Rahul (26 off 31) and Vijay Shankar (26 off 15) made some valuable contributions before the lower order fell like a pack of cards. But by that time India was able to post a mammoth target.
For Australia, Cummins bagged five wickets, leaking 70 runs, while Richardson scalped three for 85 runs.
Brief scores:
Australia: 359/6 in 47.5 overs (Peter Handscomb 117, Usman Khawaja 91, Ashton Turner 84 not out; Jasprit Bumrah 3/63) beat India: 358/9 (Shikhar Dhawan 143, Rohit Sharma 95; Pat Cummins 5/70) by four wickets.
Will give clean government, people believe my party: Bhaichung Bhutia
B
[Nasheman news] Gangtok Unfazed by recent desertions from his fledgling party, football icon-turned-politician Bhaichung Bhutia exudes confidence that the Hamro Sikkim Party (HSP) would give a “new” and “clean” government if voted to power in the Himalayan state.
While not ruling out the option of future alliances, the HSP Working President and former India football captain says that as of now, his party would contest the upcoming elections alone to the sole Lok Sabha seat and all the 32 Assembly seats in the state.
In a freewheeling interview with IANS, Bhutia spoke on his party’s agenda, and attacked the state’s Pawan Chamling government on issues like corruption, while criticising some headline welfare policies unveiled by the regime.
Bhutia said the HSP was the answer to Sikkim people’s craving for a party with credibility.
“We are going to give a new Sikkim and clean Sikkim. We are a young party and we have got credible people. This is what the people of Sikkim want,” he said.
Scotching speculation that the HSP was holding talks with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and some regional parties to take on Chamling’s Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF), that has been in power since 1994, Bhutia said: “We are going it alone in this election. One or two parties, if they believe in our ideology, we are ready to take them (in). But at the moment, we are going with 32 candidates for the Assembly and one for the Lok Sabha.”
On two HSP founding members and working presidents – R.B. Subba and K.N. Uprety – crossing over to the SDF, Bhutia said his party’s credibility would be stronger and better without them.
“It is not at all a major challenge… After they left, the party’s credibility has gone up. Now when we say ‘clean, corruption free Sikkim’, people believe us.”
Bhutia stressed on development being the sole agenda of the party, also taking potshots at the Chamling government.
“We’ll go completely on development. Because Sikkim, in 25 years, in terms of development, has been lacking,” he said promising good roads, improvement in the health sector, 24-hour electricity and drinking water to “almost al the villages” if his party is chosen by the people.
Calling Sikkim “the most corrupt state politically” in the country, the 42-year-old Bhutia alleged graft in the hydro projects.
“Sikkim is the most corrupt state… It is highly corrupted politically,” he said.
Bhutia was also not impressed with the state government’s “success” in organic farming, alleging it was only done for the Chamling’s “marketing purposes”.
Incidentally, Chamling received the prestigious Future Policy Gold Award at the UN Food and Agricultural Organisation headquarters in Rome last October for turning Sikkim into a “100 per cent organic state”.
While supporting the concept of organic farming, Bhutia quoted the state government’s data saying organic agricultural land has gone down 50 per cent in the current regime.
“We have 20 lakh tourists visiting Sikkim and your food production has gone down 65 per cent. There is huge gap between just declaring it, and then actually realising it. He (Chamling) needs to increase agricultural land which has gone down by 50 per cent.”
Bhutia said his party would ensure sustainable development by taking good care of farmers through measures like minimum guaranteed price and subsidies.
Bhutia also took a dig at the ‘One family, one job’ scheme announced by Chamling, saying the youth were “disappointed” at being given jobs for only 89 days.
“Don’t make people of Sikkim (look like) beggars. Today’s youth of Sikkim are educated and qualified and you are giving them jobs of ‘safai karmacharis’ (sweepers) and village guards.
“And when you are giving jobs, give secured jobs and not just for 89 days.”
While launching the scheme in January, Chamling said budget allocations have been made for 89 days in the current financial year for paying emoluments to the new recruits, and fresh provisions would be made in the next financial year.
This is Bhutia’s second innings in politics. He earlier contested the 2014 Lok Sabha and 2016 Assembly elections in West Bengal as a Trinamool Congress candidate – but bit the dust on both occasions.
“I don’t live or work in Bengal, so just being a star and being up there doesn’t work. So from Bengal it was more from top, getting nominated as candidate. In Sikkim, this is my own party. In politics if you can’t be with your people and help them, then I don’t think it makes any sense to do politics,” he added.
3rd ODI: Australia gets home by 32 runs vs India
[Nasheman news] Ranchi India skipper Virat Kohli’s (123 off 95) gritty century went in vain as India suffered a 32-run defeat against Australia in the third contest of the five-match rubber at the JSCA stadium here on Friday.
Despite this loss, India still maintain a 2-1 lead in the series.
Brief Scores: Australia 313/5 (Usman Khawaja 104, Aaron Finch 93; Kuldeep Yadav 3/64) beat India 281 all out (Virat Kohli 123, Vijay Shankar 32; Pat Cummins 3/37) by 32 runs.
