Mattis to remain Pentagon chief: Trump

September 6, 2018 by Nasheman

US President Donald Trump has said that Defence Secretary James Mattis will remain in office, dismissing reports that he is looking for possible replacements for the Pentagon chief.

“He’ll stay right there. We’re very happy with him. We’re having a lot of victories,” Trump said on Wednesday when asked by reporters at the White House whether he was considering replacing Mattis.

The remarks came as The Washington Post columnist Josh Rogin wrote in an article that the administration has been considering possible replacements for Mattis for weeks.

Rogin added that no decisions were made yet, though White House officials expected that Mattis will leave his position in the coming months.

The Trump-Mattis relationship was put under limelight a day earlier after excerpts from an explosive book mentioned that the Defence Secretary had made disparaging remarks about the President.

According to the book, “Fear: Trump in the White House”, authored by veteran investigative reporter Bob Woodward, Mattis was quoted as having told associates that Trump acted like “a fifth- or sixth-grader”.

Mattis denied earlier that he ever said or heard the quotes attributed to him in the book.

“While I generally enjoy reading fiction, this is a uniquely Washington brand of literature, and his anonymous sources do not lend credibility,” Mattis said in a statement.

Trump called Woodward’s book “a total piece of fiction”, while praising Mattis’ statement as “beautiful”.

In a statement to The Washington Post, Woodward said, “I stand by my reporting”. According to the author, the book was based on hundreds of hours of conversations with direct players.

Woodward has been a reporter at The Washington Post since 1971 and remains an associate editor. He is most famous for breaking the story of the Watergate scandal, which prompted the resignation of Richard Nixon from the presidency in 1974.

Outrage after activists arrested over alleged Maoist links

August 29, 2018 by Nasheman

Indian police arrested prominent writers and left-wing activists for suspected links to banned Maoist rebels, sparking outrage across the country.

The arrests on Tuesday drew condemnation from human rights groups who called the police raids a “massive crackdown” on government critics.

In a series of coordinated operations, police arrested five activists accusing them of delivering speeches that triggered protests and violence near the western city of Pune last year.

Those arrested include Telugu language poet Varavara Rao in Hyderabad, activists Vernon Gonzalves and Arun Ferreira in Mumbai, journalist Gautam Navlakha in New Delhi, and civil rights lawyer Sudha Bhardwaj in Faridabad.

“These persons have been arrested for their Maoist links,” Shivaji Bodakhe, joint commissioner of Pune police in western Maharashtra state, told AFP news agency, without giving further details.

India’s Maoist rebels: An explainer
The government says Maoist rebels, who are active in several states, are India’s biggest internal security threat.

The raids on Tuesday were in connection to an ongoing probe into the violence between lower caste Dalits and right-wing groups at Maharashtra’s Bhima Koregaon village on December 31.

‘Atmosphere of fear’
The crackdown was condemned by lawyers, academics, authors and rights watchdogs, with government critics accusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s right-wing Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of attempting to silence its opponents.

“The nationwide crackdown on activists, advocates and human rights defenders is disturbing and threatens core human rights values,” Amnesty International’s Indian chapter and NGO Oxfam India said in a joint statement.

“The government should protect people’s rights to freedom of expression, association, and peaceful assembly instead of creating an atmosphere of fear,” said Amitabh Behar, CEO of Oxfam India.

Booker-prize winning author Arundhati Roy, an outspoken critic of Modi, said the “perilous” arrests on “ludicrous charges” were an attempt to muzzle freedom ahead of next year’s polls.

“The simultaneous state-wide arrests are a dangerous sign of a government that fears it is losing its mandate and is falling into panic,” Roy told Press Trust of India news agency.

In July, media watchdog Reporters Without Borders warned of deteriorating press freedom in the world’s largest democracy amid a sharp rise in online hate campaigns directed at critics of Modi’s Hindu nationalist government.

The communist political movement in India started in the 1920s as an anti-colonial struggle when the country was still ruled by Britain, but the current phase of Maoist rebellion began in 2004.

Rohingya situation one of worst human rights crises: Guterres

August 29, 2018 by Nasheman

Describing the Rohingya refugee situation as one of the worst humanitarian and human rights crises of the past year, Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for international action to ensure Myanmar is held to account for the crimes of its security forces.

Speaking at a Security Council session convened on Tuesday for the one-year anniversary of the start of the exodus of 720,000 Rohingyas to Bangladesh, Guterres also condemned the attacks by extremists against the security forces.

However, he added that nothing can ever justify the disproportionate use of force against civilians and the horrendous violation of human rights violations by the security forces.

Urging united action by the divided Security Council, Guterres cited a report issued on Monday by a UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) fact-finding team and said the human rights abuses amounted to “the gravest crimes under international law”.

He thanked the Bangladesh government for its generosity in hosting the refugees and said more needs to be done by the world community as only 33 per cent of the $951 million UN appeal for assistance has been met and the the monsoon season looms.

The current crisis began in August 2017 with attacks on Myanmar security posts by the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA), which is led by Karachi-born Ata Ullah.

The Myanmar armed forces and vigilantes retaliated brutally against the Rohingyas starting an exodus that began on August 25.

Tariq Mahmood Ahmad, the British Minister of State for the UN, who presided over the Security Council session, said that it should be prepared to use all the tools it has to ensure justice for the Rohingyas.

The strongly-worded report by the UNHRC team headed by former Indonesian attorney-general Marzuki Darusman said that allegations of genocide against Myanmar officials should be referred to the International Criminal Court (ICC) or to a special tribunal.

The Netherlands and Sweden backed the suggestion and asked the Security Council to refer the matter to the ICC.

But Russia and China countered saying that the situation required a non-confrontational approach and only a bilateral diplomatic solution involving Myanmar and Bangladesh would work.

Myanmar’s Permanent Representative Hau Do Suan said that his country did not accept the findings of the UNHRC team as it was biased.

However, he added that Myanmar does not condone human rights abuses and would take action against anyone guilty if there was evidence of their conduct.

He alleged that the ARSA had set up terrorist bases in some areas along the border with Bangladesh.

Bangladesh Permanent Representative Masud Bin Momen said that in the light of the UNHRC team’s report, it was imperative that the Security Council should act decisively.

He said that the Rohingyas could not return to their homes in Rakhine state unless they were assured of their safety.

For this, the Myanmar government should take several steps like curbing hate speech, allowing free access to UN agencies for relief operations and dismantling internal camps for Rohingyas and giving them freedom of movement.

Australian-born actor Cate Blanchett, who is a Goodwill Ambassador for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, spoke at the Security Council session about her encounters with Rohingya refugees who told her harrowing tales of their experiences in Myanmar.

She said that as a mother she was moved by the plight of the children she met as she saw her children reflected in them.

Infosys opens North Carolina hub, hires 4,700 in the US

August 23, 2018 by Nasheman

San Francisco,Global software major Infosys has inaugurated its fourth technology and innovation hub in Raleigh, North Carolina, saying that it has now hired more than 4,700 Americans since spring 2017, including nearly 500 in North Carolina.

The North Carolina hub will help Infosys work more closely with clients in the region in areas as Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, user experience and advanced digital technologies, including big data and Cloud, the company said in a statement late on Wednesday.

The Hub will train, upskill and reskill Infosys and client employees, in the technologies required to help American businesses accelerate their digital transformations.

“The inauguration of our Raleigh Technology and Innovation Hub empowers our North Carolina employees by providing them with pioneering technology training that will help American industries revitalise their core businesses,” Infosys CEO Salil Parekh said in a statement.

“The hub allows us to co-locate, co-innovate and co-create alongside our clients and build on our passion for creating the next generation of top US technology talent through world-class education and training,” Parekh added.

The hiring is part of the company’s May 2, 2017, decision to recruit 10,000 Americans by setting up four such hubs across the US and focus on new technologies.

“Just over a year ago, Infosys committed to creating 2,000 high-skill, high-wage jobs in the Tar Heel State. The company is making strong progress towards that hiring target,” noted North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper.

In March this year, Infosys said it will open a technology and innovation hub in the US state of Connecticut and hire about 1,000 American workers by 2022.

The Connecticut hub will focus on insurance, healthcare and manufacturing to bring the company to the eastern state’s clients and serve as the global hub for its InsurTech and HeathTech efforts.

The company’s first hub was inaugurated in March at Indianapolis in Indiana state where it hired 2,500 American workers over the past year.

The company has also announced opening its third hub at Providence in Rhode Island, where it plans to hire about 2,000 techies each by 2021-22.

“Today’s Hub inauguration represents another major step forward for Infosys in North Carolina. We have formed strong partnerships with the state’s economic development team,” said Ravi Kumar, President, Infosys.

Death toll in devastating Kerala floods rises to 77

August 16, 2018 by Nasheman

The death toll brought on by floods, landslides, and bridge collapses in India’s monsoon-hit state of Kerala has risen to 77 as heavy rainfall threatened new areas.

Authorities in the southern state, which is home to 33 million people, have placed local agencies on the highest alert level in what has turned out to be Kerala’s worst monsoon in almost a century.

“All districts are under red alert as more rains are expected in the next 24 hours,” an official from the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority told AFP on Thursday.

Kerala is battered by the monsoon every year but the rains have been particularly severe since August 8, flooding hundreds of villages and prompting the authorities to suspend flights in and out of the region.

More than 60,000 people have sought shelter in relief camps and the army and navy have been called in to assist with rescue operations, airlifting people to the hospital, according to the official.

Unconfirmed local media reports mentioned a much higher toll and cited ongoing efforts to reach many flooded areas.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Thursday that he was “praying for the safety and well-being of the people of Kerala” and has ordered the Defence Ministry to “further step up the rescue and relief operations across the state.”

WATCH: India: Monsoon floods, landslides kill dozens in Kerala state
Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan’s office announced on Twitter that Kochi International Airport – the main gateway to the region – would be closed until Saturday “due to heavy rains and resultant flooding”.

Vijayan held emergency meetings with rescue officials in the state late on Wednesday and discussed the situation with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The chief minister has requested the deployment of additional personnel from the Indian army, navy and other emergency forces who are already working across the state, famed for its pristine palm-lined beaches and tea plantations.

“Our state is in the midst of an unprecedented flood havoc,” Vijayan said earlier this week. “The calamity has caused immeasurable misery and devastation.”

Authorities have opened the gates of 34 reservoirs as water reached dangerous levels.

Vijayan’s office on Wednesday said that the authorities were also worried about rising water levels in the massive Mullaperiyar dam, and urged officials in the neighboring state of Tamil Nadu to release water from the reservoir.

Hundreds of villages have been flooded, more than 10,000 kilometers of roads and thousands of homes have been destroyed or damaged across the state, officials said.

India: Monsoon floods, landslides kill dozens in Kerala state
“We have asked all airlines, domestic and foreign, to reschedule their Cochin flights either from Trivandrum or from Calicut,” Suresh Prabhu, India’s civil aviation minister said on Twitter.

“For international flights, this will require special dispensation which has been granted considering the emergency DGCA (Directorate General of Civil Aviation) is coordinating,” he added.

More than one million foreign tourists visited Kerala last year, according to official data.

I don’t believe in soft Hindutva, says Rahul

August 14, 2018 by Nasheman

Congress President Rahul Gandhi made it clear on Tuesday that he was not wedded to Hindutva – “soft or hardcore”.

In an interaction with editors, Gandhi did not agree that he was embracing soft Hindutva to appease the majority community.

“I don’t believe in any kind of Hindutva, soft or hard core,” he said.

Gandhi said there was nothing wrong in his meeting religious leaders and visiting religious places.

His differences with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he insisted, were ideological and not personal.

Gandhi, on a two-day visit to Hyderabad, predicted that Narendra Modi would not become Prime Minister in 2019.

He said the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) would not even get 230 Lok Sabha seats and hence there was no question of Modi continuing in office again. The BJP tally would be cut primarily due to the alliance among non-BJP parties in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.

He also pointed out that several allies of the BJP, including Shiv Sena, were against Modi becoming the Prime Minister for a second term.

The Congress President said the party was working with like-minded parties to form a grand alliance to defeat the BJP.

He was confident that a Congress-led alliance would form the next government at the Centre.

He evaded a direct reply to a question on who would be the Prime Minister in the event of Congress and other non-BJP parties getting a majority. He merely said they would work it out.

He was also non-committal on whether the Congress would repeat the Karnataka formula, where it accepted the leader of a party with fewer seats as the Chief Minister to prevent the BJP from taking power.

Asked about his hug to Modi in Parliament, Gandhi said it was intended to show that he doesn’t hate people.

He, however, said the Prime Minister was cold in his response. He alleged that Modi doesn’t give due respect to political rivals.

He voiced concern over growing intolerance in the country. He said that minorities were feeling insecure.

Gandhi said the party’s state units were free to have alliances with like-minded parties. He was confident that the Congress would come to power in Telangana.

Asked about Andhra Pradesh, where Congress drew a blank in the 2014 polls, he said the party was improving its position.

He said Modi had failed to implement his promise of providing two crore jobs annually.

“China provides employment to 50,000 people in 24 hours while in India only 458 people get employment during this duration,” he said.

In a lighter vein, Gandhi remarked that he was wedded to the Congress.

“I am wedded to Congress,” he said when he was asked about his marriage plans.

Karwaan

Karwaan Is A Decent Film With Memorable Performances By Irrfan Khan & Dulquer Salmaan

Banner: RSVP Movies & Ishka Films
Producer: Prithi Rathi Gupta & Ronnie Screwala
Director: Akarsh Khurana
Star Cast: Dulquer Salmaan, Mithila Parkar & Irrfan Khan along with Kriti Kharbanda, Amala Akkineni, Akash Khurana, Donna Munshi, Beena, Nambiar & Habib Azmi
Music: Prateek Khuhad, Anurag Saikia, Slow Cheetah & Imaad Shah

Road trip films have their own charm and some of the most memorable films in the West belong to this genre. Even Bollywood has excelled in this genre with films like Piku in the year 2015, Qarib Qarib Singlle in the year 2017, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara in the year 2011, Highway in the year 2014, Jab We Met in the year 2007, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani in the year 2013 et al. Irrfan Khan, surprisingly, has appeared in 2 such films in recent times, namely, Piku & Qarib Qarib Singlle. And now he’s all set to complete his travel trilogy with Karwaan, which is also the Bollywood debut of the Malyalam actor & star Dulquer Salmaan and the 1st ever leading role for the most talked about internet sensation & Marathi actor Mithila Palkar.

The scripted scenario of Karwaan showcases the story of 3 diametrically opposite individuals on a journey together. Avinash Rajpurohit (Dulquer Salmaan) works in an IT company in Bengaluru and is frustrated with his job. One day he gets a call that his father Prakash Rajpurohit (Akash Khurana) has left for his heavenly abode in a bus accident while he was on his way to Gangotri. The travel company arranges for his father’s mortal remains to be sent to Avinash in Bengaluru. Avinash had a troubled relationship with his father as the latter compelled him to give up his dreams of becoming a photographer. As a result, he’s not quite affected with his demise. Avinash asks his friend Shaukat (Irrfan Khan), who runs a garage, to provide him with a van so that he can carry the mortal remains from the airport to the crematorium. Avinash picks up the body and reaches the crematorium, where he realizes that he is given the mortal remains of a woman (Beena). The woman turns out to be a victim who also died in the same bus accident and her family resides in Kochi, who in a terrible mix up, were provided with Prakash’s mortal remains. Avinash hence decides to take advantage of the long weekend and take the woman’s mortal remains to Kochi and exchange it with his father’s. Shaukat also joins in. On the way, the dead woman’s daughter Tahira (Amala Akkineni) makes an SOS call to Avinash and requests him if he can pick up her daughter Tanya (Mithila Palkar) who studies in Ooty and is incommunicado. Shaukat has reservations with this idea but Avinash doesn’t listen. He reaches Ooty, picks up Tanya and then they head to Kochi. Unknown to them, a group of small – time goons are also following the trio. What happens next forms the rest of the crux of the film.

Bejoy Nambiar’s story is promising and could have made for a great script. But Akarsh Khurana & Adhir Bhat’s screenplay fails to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity. The film moves at a snail’s pace and many developments don’t happen organically. Also, the entire track of Avinash’s father forcing him to give up photography is something that’s been done to death in our films, most notable & recent example being Tamasha in the year 2015. Hussain Dalal’s dialogues are funny & witty, yet worded simply. The ones mouthed by Irrfan Khan stand out.

Akarsh Khurana’s direction is weak and he also lets go of the opportunity of turning a somewhat flawed script into a good film with his execution. One doesn’t feel much for the characters due to the way the narrative pans out. Except for the part where Shaukat speaks about his father, no other scene moves the viewers, not even the monologue of Tahira & Avinash. Also, the predictability sets in since one knows that the road trip films usually ends with the characters getting transformed ultimately. Hence, despite the scene of Avinash in the end with his boss being a good one, it doesn’t make the desired impact as the audiences already see it coming.

Karwaan begins well and the frustration of being a part of a profession that doesn’t suit Avinash is well depicted in the initial scenes. One expects things to get better once the road trip begins. And it does get better but not to a great extent. The film drags & a lot of humor & situations seems forced. The character of Tanya is half – baked & the writers should have etched this part in a better way. The intermission point is funny & again, the hopes rise for a better 2nd half. Alas, that doesn’t happen and the film remains flat in the last hour as well. Even the climax lacks a solid punch. In fact, the Indian audiences might have a strong reservations in the manner in which Tahira & Tanya organize a feast, play cricket & make merry as if nothing untoward has happened in their lives, just hours after the funeral. On the positive side, the film has some funny moments that succeed in raising the laughs. The best part in this regard is the track of the shehnai wallah (Habib Azmi). It’s sure to bring the house down!

Music goes well with the narrative but isn’t something that would have a long shelf life. “Chota Sa Fasana” is the best of the lot and is like a theme of the film. “Heartquake” comes next and works due to its quirky lyrics & situation. “Sansein” is also fair and the rest are forgettable. Anurag Saikia’s background score is good but could have been a bit more subtle. Avinash Arun’s cinematography is breathtaking & captures the locales so well that one feels that one is actually a part of the “Karwaan”. The lensman had earlier shown his magic in Masaan in the year 2015 & Drishyam in the year 2015 & also directed the acclaimed Marathi film Killa in the year 2015 and he ensures that he keeps his credibility intact. Tiya Tejpal’s production design is passable. 3 locales, the house of Rumana, Tahira & Nambiars, all seemed to be shot at one locale. Ajay Sharma’s editing is too slow and could have been slick. Also, the manner in which the flashback of Prakash Rajpurohit would suddenly pop up seemed unconvincing. Jaya Taurani’s costumes are fine.

Performance wise Irrfan Khan delivers a very decent performance & also contributes to the laughter quotient, but only at places. Almost all his dialogues are worded to create an effect & the endeavor fails. Compare this with Irrfan’s previous travel films, Qarib Qarib Singlle & Piku, where the humor flowed organically. Unfortunately, that doesn’t happen here. But he surely dominates the film and gives the most memorable performance out of all actors. Dulquer Salmaan makes a really confident debut. He understands his part well and one must watch out how he carefully ensures that he doesn’t go overboard. This aspect would surely be loved by the Hindi audiences. Mithila Palkar is strictly average. Her character lacked depth and even performance wise; she could have brought out varied shades which would have enhanced the impact. Alas, her performance looks a bit monotonous. Amala Akkineni, south actor Nagaarjuna’s wife and former Bollywood actress, is genuine. Akash Khurana is good as the autocratic father. Kriti Kharbanda as Rumana is quite lovely in the special appearance, but again, her track fails to add much to the film. Donna Munshi as Tasneem has a striking face and does very well. Habib Azmi gives a fine performance, as a shehnai wallah. Beena is alright. The actors playing the cargo office staffer, Avinash’s boss, Rumana’s husband, new employee at Avinash’s office & Nambiar are very good.

Tail Piece: On the whole, Karwaan is a good opportunity gone waste. Irrfan Khan is the biggest draw of this film but the audiences might be dejected to not see him in his full glory.

At the Box – Office turnstiles, the film is going to struggle a lot to stay afloat. Period!

Ex-Chilean President nominated for UN Human Rights chief

August 9, 2018 by Nasheman

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has nominated former Chilean President Michelle Bachelet to succeed the controversial Zeid Ra’ad Al-Hussein as the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.

Her nomination was sent by Guterres on Wednesday to the UN General Assembly which must approve the appointment.

Zeid’s four-year term ends this month and General Assembly President Miroslav Lajcak had convened a session on August 3 to consider her nomination.

Zeid decided not to seek a second term for which he was eligible.

Bachelet, who completed a second term as Chile’s President in March, personally experienced human rights violations during the military dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet.

A doctor, she also has done advanced studies in defense in the US and served as health and defense minister — unique qualifications for a human rights chief who must confront military organizations involved in human rights violations that inflict physical and mental harm.

Bachelet now faces a task of reestablishing the credibility of her office and of the UN Human Rights Council, which have come under attack during Zeid’s stormy tenure.

India had accused Zeid of being biased after he had issued a report on human rights violations in Kashmir and called for a Security Council investigation.

India slammed the report and Deputy Permanent Representative Tanmaya Lal said it reflected “the clear bias of an official who was acting without any mandate whatsoever and relied on unverified sources of information”.

The US pulled out of the Human Rights Council in June with Permanent Representative Nikki Haley calling it a “hypocritical and self-serving organization that makes a mockery of human rights”.

Bachelet’s father, Air Force Brigadier General Alberto Arturo Miguel Bachelet Martinez, died in custody after being tortured following his arrest by Pinochet who overthrew the democratically elected President Salvador Allende in 1973.

She herself was detained and tortured before being exiled to Australia.

She moved to what was then East Germany before being allowed to return to Chile in 1979 and resume her medical studies.

After Pinochet’s defeat in a referendum in 1988 and the restoration of democracy, she received a scholarship to study at the Inter-American Defense College in Washington.

She was first elected President in 2005 but could not seek re-election as the constitution prohibits the head of state from holding two consecutive terms.

Bachelet joined the UN in 2010 as the executive director of UN Women, the office for empowering women and for gender equality.

She was again elected president in 2013.
