Blackberry sues Twitter over patent infringement
[Nasheman news] San Francisco BlackBerry has sued Twitter on patent infringement, accusing the open communication platform of illegally using its mobile messaging technology.
The lawsuit, filed in the US District Court for Central California, seeks compensation for lost revenue and unspecified enhanced damages, CNET reported late Wednesday.
BlackBerry has alleged Twitter infringed on six of its patents, like push notifications, silencing notifications for a message thread and mobile advertising techniques.
“The lawsuit accuses the micro-blogging site of co-opting BlackBerry’s technology for use in several services, including the main Twitter app and Twitter Ads,” said the report.
Twitter was yet to comment on the lawsuit.
Software major BlackBerry in 2018 sued Facebook and its subsidiaries — photo sharing app Instagram and messaging service WhatsApp.
The suit alleged that Facebook has infringed on some of BlackBerry’s patents including security features, mobile notifications, and combining gaming with messaging.
“Blackberry’s suit sadly reflects the current state of its messaging business. Having abandoned its efforts to innovate, Blackberry is now looking to tax the innovation of others. We intend to fight,” Facebook had replied.
BlackBerry also sued Snap, for allegedly infringing its patented messaging technology in the Snapchat app.
In the fresh lawsuit against Twitter, BlackBerry alleged Twitter “has succeeded in diverting consumers away from BlackBerry’s products and services”.
Several actors, celebrities asked to appear before police in QNet scam
[Nasheman news] Hyderabad Bollywood actors Shah Rukh Khan, Anil Kapoor and Jackie Shroff and cricketer Yuvaraj Singh were among several celebrities who have been served notice by the Cyberabad Police in its investigation of the QNet multi-level marketing cases.
Boman Irani, Vivek Oberoi, Pooja Hegde and Telugu actor Allu Sirish also figured in the list of 500 persons who were asked to appear before the Economic Offences Wing to explain their association with Hong Kong-based Q-Net and Vihaan Direct Selling Pvt Ltd, which are facing the charges of cheating, police sources said on Wednesday.
The companies allegedly duped over 20 lakh investors. The volume of cheating through illegal money circulation scheme is estimated about Rs 20,000 crore.
The celebrities allegedly endorsed and promoted the companies involved. Some of them also worked as their brand ambassadors.
Promoters, shareholders, directors and CEOs of the companies were among those served notice under Section 161 of Criminal Procedure Code, asking them to appear before Economic Offences Wing of Cyberabad Police Commissionerate, one of the three police commissionerates covering Hyderabad, Secunderabad, information technology hub Cyberabad and surroundings.
Sources said if the persons served notice fail to appear, they may face legal action.
Cyberabad police had received complaints against the celebrities from many victims. They allegedly received remuneration from the companies for creating the brand image.
According to police, several criminal cases were filed against Vihaan Direct Selling, Bengluru for cheating more than three lakh persons across the country by floating illegal money circulation scheme.
Cyberabad Police Commissioner V.C. Sajjanar earlier said Telangana High Court had not given any stay orders on the investigation of criminal cases filed against Vihaan. He also clarified that there is no bar for registering of fresh cases against QNet/Vihaan Direct Selling.
ICC assures BCCI of security during World Cup
[Nasheman news] DubaiThe International Cricket Council (ICC) on Wednesday assured BCCI that all security concerns at the upcoming ODI World Cup, in the wake of Pulwama terror attack, will be addressed adequately.
According to sources in the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), at the ICC meeting here, Board’s CEO Rahul Johri had raised concerns about security at the World Cup, scheduled to be held in England and Wales.
Johri reportedly expressed satisfaction with the ICC’s security arrangements during the World Cup which starts on May 30.
The BCCI is yet to take a decision on boycotting the World Cup first round match against Pakistan on June 16 as there is a possibility that the two arch-rivals may meet in the knockout stages as well.
There have been demands from several former players and ex-BCCI officials that the Pakistan match should be boycotted following nation wide outrage over the Pulwama terror attack which led to the martyrdom of at least 40 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) soldiers.
Former India captain Sourav Ganguly and former star off-spinner Harbhajan Singh are among those who had called for a boycott of the match against Pakistan.
New energy source discovered off Andhra coast
B
[Nasheman news] Bengaluru Researchers have discovered “methane hydrates” — a potential fuel of the future — just two meters below the sea floor in the Krishna-Godavari (K-G) basin off the coast of Andhra Pradesh in the Bay of Bengal.
The discovery has been reported by a team of scientists from the National Institute of Oceanography in Goa and the National Geophysical Research Institute in Hyderabad in the Journal of Earth System Science published by the Indian Academy of Sciences.
“This is the first report on the discovery of an active methane seepage site and the occurrence of shallow methane hydrate deposits in India’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ),” they report.
Methane hydrate, which is formed at low temperature and high pressure, is a solid crystal structure of water within which a large amount of methane gas is trapped.
This is a new and completely untapped reservoir of fossil fuel, because it contains, as its name suggests, a large quantity of methane, which is the main component of natural gas.
Global interest in the genesis of “methane seeps” in the oceans stems from the role of methane in global warming and in methane hydrate exploration.
According to the Indian researchers, the occurrence of methane gas hydrates at very shallow depths in K-G basin “is due to the presence of high methane flux and conducive pressure and temperature conditions, necessary for the stability of methane hydrate”.
“High biogenic methane flux close to the sediment-water interface has resulted in the crystallisation of methane hydrate at shallow depths below the seafloor”, they report.
The discovery was made during an expedition conducted in the K-G basin onboard the Sindhu Sadhana research vessel during January-February last year.
The active methane “seep sites” were detected by analysing the water-column images obtained through a multi-beam echo sounder. “The analysis of the images shows four distinct gas flares in the ridge area,” says the report. “These gas flares are tell-tale signatures of methane ebullition from the seabed.”
The mapping of the water column, coupled with precision sampling of sediment “led to the discovery of active cold seeps, associated biological communities and shallow gas hydrate.”
The diversity, spatial distribution and growth of organisms thriving in such an ecosystem are primarily controlled by fluxes of hydrogen sulfide and methane gas across the sediment-water interface, the report said.
Marine cold seeps and associated ecosystems have been reported from numerous sites across the globe, including the Makran coast of neighboring Pakistan. “Ours is the first report on the discovery of methane gas flares in the water column and associated benthic biotic community at the cold seep sites off K-G Basin,” the researchers report.
“The present discovery has brought India on to the global cold seep map and opened up the opportunity for future research on the possible role of methane emission on global warming, ocean acidification, extreme ecosystem, and bio-prospecting,” they conclude.
“With an estimated trillions of cubic meters of methane gas available in the gas hydrate deposits in the Indian waters, gas hydrates can be the future source of energy for India,” the Ministry of Earth Sciences, which spent Rs 1.43 billion in gas hydrate exploration during 2012-17, says on its website.
