Director: Paul Feig
Star Cast: Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Erin Gilbert, Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones & Neil Casey
Director Paul Feig’s latest offering Ghostbusters is a remake of the original 1984 version. But the current movie lacks the scary punch and instead ends up as absolutely unscary albeit a jovial good yet more of a rollercoaster comic oriented laugh riot. But will a reboot featuring an all new starcast with cameos by original film’s actors work remains to be seen.
The scripted scenario of Ghostbusters kick – starts following the story of Dr. Erin Gilbert (Kristen Wiig) who dreams of acquiring tenure status at the Columbia University. However, her dreams of tenure come under threat when she learns that her one time friend & co -author Dr. Abby Yates (Melissa McCarthy) released a book on paranormal that they wrote, without her permission. Fearing that the book which deals with the paranormal will affect her tenure application, Erin sets out to confront Yates and makes her withdraw the book. But when Abby & Erin come face to face, a series of confusing events and an abrupt introduction of Dr. Jillian Holtzmann (Kate McKinnon), lead Erin on a ghost hunting expedition with Abby & Jillian. The expedition proves to be a success with the trio being able to find an ectoplasmic human representation of a once living being, but unfortunately the said apparition escapes their clutches. However, a video of the encounter with Erin ranting about ghosts being real makes its way to the web, which not just ends Erin’s tenure but also gets her fired. The female Ghostbusters team now also hire a dumb & blonde secretary Kevin (Chris Hemsworth) who has no idea of what his job profile is or what is that of his employers.
Director Paul Feig’s directorial treatment seems to be absolutely pedestrian with a total lack of punch which is an essential requisite for such horror & comic oriented movie. The only thing that comes to his rescue is a smoother albeit a more eye appealing CGI. All said & done Ghostbusters obviously boasts of some pretty cutting edge visual effects. The CGI of the film is good and is synced well with the 3D effect. That being said, the heavy duty CGI & VFX in the climax is impressive.
Performance wise the entire female brigade comprising of Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Erin Gilbert, Kate McKinnon & Leslie Jones scores the overall brownie points. While Neil Casey the only lone ranger in this all female brigade army tries his best to hold his fort and ends up delivering an utmost convincing act.
Tail Piece: Ghostbusters is nothing more than a simple horror – comedy which makes up for a light entertainer.
