Producer: Brian Grazer, Ron Howard, Will Ward, Joe Roth & Paula Weinstein
Director: Ron Howard
Star Cast: Chris Hemsworth, Benjamin Walker, Cilian Murphy, Tom, Holland,& Ben Gleeson
Genre: Adventure
Verdict: POOR
Plot: In 1820, the whaling ship Essex is crewed by Captain George Pollard Jr 1st officer, Owen Chase 2nd officer Matthew Joy, and cabin boy Thomas Nickerson. During their voyage, the ship is sunk when it is rammed & split in half by a very large & enraged bull sperm whale, ultimately leaving its crew shipwrecked at sea for 90 days and more than a thousand miles away from the land. After the attack, the crew sails for South America and is forced to resort to Cannibalism.
Aces: It’s the directorial treatment of Ron Howard and the performances of the principal actors that saves the day and makes the movie watchable to some extent.
Minuses: The loose screenplay & some of the repetitive scenes when the ship is at sea and especially when it is sinking. And also the editing could have been crisper.
Last Word: There is nothing new that we have not seen before but of course the lovers of adventure may get hooked by its grandeur.
