Make Modi’s degree public: Kejriwal to DU

May 5, 2016 by Nasheman

arvind-kejriwal-manish-sisodia

New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday urged Delhi University to make public Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s BA degree.

In a letter to Vice Chancellor Yogesh Tyagi, Kejriwal referred to Modi’s successive election affidavits which stated that he had a Bachelor of Arts degree from Delhi University.

“It will be better if you put on the university website all the documents related to the prime minister’s degree,” he said.

“The people of this country have a right to know how educated their prime minister is.”

The letter comes a day after the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader alleged that Modi didn’t have a BA degree from Delhi University.

He said there were no records in the university and the purported degree of Modi published by some newspapers was forged.

Modi’s election affidavit in 2014 claimed he had both undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. According to the affidavit, he completed a distance education course from Delhi University in 1978 in Political Science.

Kejriwal said in his letter to Tyagi that if Modi didn’t have a BA degree, then he could not be having an MA degree too.

“Gujarat University says he (Modi) has done MA from there. But if he hasn’t even done his BA, how did he get admission in MA? It raises doubts that his MA degree is also forged. It is a very serious matter.”

On Wednesday, three AAP leaders alleged that Delhi University refused to share with them details regarding Modi’s BA degree and told them to approach the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) instead.

The Central Information Commission (CIC) had on April 29 directed the universities of Delhi and Gujarat to respond to the RTI application regarding Modi’s educational qualifications.

Earlier, the Delhi University declined to give information related to Modi’s BA degree despite RTI requests.

The university cited its inability to get the information without a roll number as the reason for the denial.

Shoe hurled at Arvind Kejriwal, attacker detained

April 9, 2016 by Nasheman

Arvind Kejriwal shoe

New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal came to inform the public about the second phase of the odd-even vehicle rationing scheme from April 15 to 30, and instead, almost took a shoe hit.

The shoe thrower, identified as Ved Prakash, has been detained for questioning and is reportedly a member of the Aam Aadmi Sena.

Incidents of shoes being thrown at politicians are not new.

In India, in April 2009, Jarnail Singh, a journalist with a national daily then, had hurled a shoe at then Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram in protest against his remarks on the clean chit given to Congress leaders in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots case.

Today, Singh is a legislator of the AAP.

Earlier, on December 14, 2008, during a press conference in Baghdad, Iraq, an Iraqi journalist Muntadhar al-Zaidi threw both of his shoes at then United States president George W. Bush. Bush ducked in time and avoided being hit by either of the shoes.

Al-Zaidi was subsequently grabbed, kicked and hurried out of the room by former Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki’s guards.

Defamation case: Arvind Kejriwal, 5 other AAP leaders get bail

April 7, 2016 by Nasheman

Arvind Kejriwal

New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister Kejriwal and five other AAP leaders, who were summoned as accused in a criminal defamaiton case filed against them by Union Minister Arun Jaitley, were today granted bail by a Delhi court.

Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Sumit Dass granted the relief to Kejriwal and AAP leaders Ashutosh, Sanjay Singh, Kumar Vishwas, Raghav Chadha and Deepak Bajpai, on a personal bond of Rs 20,000 each with one surety of like amount.

Kejriwal and other accused had appeared in court in pursuance to the summons issued against them on March 9. The court has now fixed the matter for May 19 for further arguments in the case.

During the hearing which commenced at around 2.35 pm, all the accused moved their bail pleas before the court which granted the relief to them. Jaitley was also present in the court room.

During the brief hearing, the counsel appearing for the accused told the court that they have not been supplied all the documents of the case after which senior advocate Sidharth Luthra, who appeared for Jaitley, said that they would provide entire sets of documents to the defence counsel.

Initially, the court granted bail to the accused on a personal bond of Rs 25,000 each with one surety of the like amount but one of the defence counsel told the court that they have brought fixed depsit receipts (FDRs) of Rs 20,000.

Hearing this submission, the court reduced the amount from Rs 25,000 to Rs 20,000 and fixed the matter for arguments on framing of notice for May 19.

Gopal Mohan, advisor to the CM, stood surety for Kejriwal and Delhi Minister Imran Hussain stood surety for Ashutosh, while AAP MLAs Naresh Balyan, Nitin Tyagi, Naresh Yadav and AAP leader Sanjeev stood sureties for Sanjay Singh, Kumar Vishwas, Dipak Bajpai and Raghav Chadha, respectively.

Before the commencement of the hearing, supporters of BJP and AAP gathered outside gate number 2 of the Patiala House Court complex and shouted slogans against each other.

The accused AAP leaders and Jaitley came to the court amid heavy security presence and entry to the court room was restricted by the police. Only the accused, those giving sureties, Jaitley and lawyers appearing in the matter along with six journalists were allowed to enter the court room.

The court had on March 9 directed Kejriwal and the five other AAP leaders to appear before it today while noting that allegations were “derogatory” and amounted to “slander and libel”.

The court had observed that the allegations levelled by them against Jaitley were “not only insulting but jeeringly taunting and provocative” and had summoned all the six accused for alleged offences under section 500 (defamation) of the IPC read with section 34 (common intention) the IPC.

Jaitley had filed a criminal defamation complaint alleging that Kejriwal and these five AAP leaders had allegedly defamed him in Delhi District Cricket Association (DDCA) controversy.

The court, while summoning the accused, had referred to the statements and Facebook and Twitter posts of the accused, and said, “The statements have exposed the complainant (Jaitley) to ridicule, hatred and contempt amongst the right- thinking members of the society and lowered his reputation.”

The court had noted that Jaitley, through the testimony of witnesses, has proved on record that while he was President of DDCA, “the accounts were duly audited/approved by AGM” and were submitted with the taxation authorities.

In his complaint, Jaitley had alleged that Kejriwal and others had made defamatory statements that he and his family had made pecuniary gains by associating with M/s 21st Century Media Pvt Ltd, a sports management firm.

On January 5, Jaitley had appeared in the court and said that Kejriwal and five AAP leaders had made “false and defamatory” statements. He had rejected the charge that he had siphoned off money from DDCA for his own benefit.

During recording of his statement, Jaitley had said that their statements against him and his family members lowered his dignity in the eyes of the public at large.

Jaitley, who was the DDCA President from December 1999 to December 2013, had said Kejriwal’s statement that he received money when the Feroz Shah Kotla stadium was constructed during his tenure as the DDCA Chief, was false as Board of Directors had constituted a committee to supervise the work and he was not a member of this supervisory committee.

Jaitley had on December 21, 2015 filed the criminal defamation case against them and sought their prosecution for offences that entail a punishment of upto two years in jail.

Arvind Kejriwal named among world’s 50 greatest leaders by Fortune

March 25, 2016 by Nasheman

Arvind Kejriwal

New York: Arvind Kejriwal has been named among the world’s 50 greatest leaders by Fortune magazine with the Delhi Chief Minister being the sole Indian leader on the list topped by Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos.

Fortune’s third annual ‘World’s 50 Greatest Leaders’ list features men and women from across the globe from the fields of business, government, philanthropy and the arts who are “transforming the world and inspiring others to do the same.”

47-year-old Aam Aadmi Party chief is ranked 42nd on the list and is the sole leader from India.

However, South Carolina’s Indian-American Governor Nikki Haley is also on the list at 17th while another Indian- American Resham Saujani is at the 20th spot.

Fortune credits Kejriwal for his efforts to curb pollution in New Delhi through the scheme of allowing vehicles of odd and even numbers on alternate days on the city’s roads.

“When Kejriwal unveiled a blueprint to tackle the smog in New Delhi — called the world’s most polluted city by the World Health Organization — many were sceptical. A key component: an ‘odd-even’ pilot project in which vehicles were allowed on the roads only on alternate days.

“The uplifting result of the pilot this January: roads were less clogged, hourly particulate air pollution concentrations dropped by 13 per cent, and citizens could breathe deep,” Fortune said.

It said leadership is not “demagoguery, pandering, even populism” but is defined by people across the world “you’ve never heard of who are rallying followers to make life better in ways you never imagined.”

“…the New Delhi ‘government official’ risking his career to fight pollution; the Italian mayor welcoming Middle East migrants to his tiny town—improving its economy and brightening their prospects,” the US-based magazine said in a reference to Kejriwal and Domenico Lucano, the Mayor of the Italian town of Riace, who was ranked 40th on the list.

“The leaders you’ll meet here, known and new, will lift your mood and upgrade your assessment of the world’s future. Some may inspire you to join their followers. And those unheard-ofs, so seemingly ordinary, may even prompt you to rethink your own potential as an inspiring leader,” Fortune said.

Bezos, who topped the list this year, has been on the list all three times, along with Pope Francis who comes in at the 4th position followed by Apple CEO Tim Cook.

The list includes German Chancellor Angela Merkel (2), Myanmar’s pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi at (3), US astronaut Scott Kelly and Russian cosmonaut Mikhail Kornienko (22), IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde (36), Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Co-chair and CEO Melinda Gates and Susan Desmond-Hellmann (41), Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau (48) and Bhutanese Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay (50).

Also on the list is Saujani, Founder and CEO of tech organization ‘Girls Who Code’.

Fortune lauded the 40-year old former Wall Street attorney for her message that girls should be taught to be brave rather than perfect.

Her organization aims to get more women into computer science and by the end of this year, more than 40,000 girls will have gone through its training and internship programmes, Fortune said.

Giving company to Kejriwal from South Asia is Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on the number 10 spot.

Fortune said the 68-year -old politician, the only female leader among the Organization of Islamic Cooperation member states, has “deftly navigated the competing demands of Islamic tradition and women’s rights”.

“She has committed Bangladesh, the nation with the world’s fourth-largest Muslim population, to securing legal protections for women and helping them attain more education,FINANCIAL freedom, and political power,” it said, adding that Bangladesh scores better on the World Economic Forum’s Gender Gap Index than any other South Asian country.

Kejriwal’s car attacked in Punjab

February 29, 2016 by Nasheman

kejriwal-car-punjab

Ludhiana: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had a narrow escape on Monday when some men armed with iron rods attacked his car here, coming “within an inch of grievously injuring” him, the AAP said.

Kejriwal, whose five-day tour of Punjab ends later in the day, tweeted that his car was attacked with sticks and stones, breaking the front glass pane.

“Badals and Congress nervous? They can’t break my spirits,” the Aam Aadmi Party leader added.

AAP leader Ashish Khetan called it a “well orchestrated attack” and said the “goons sent by Badals attacked Kejriwal’s car with stones and rods as police stood by.

“The attackers came within an inch of grievously injuring Kejriwal. It was only by god’s grace that he escaped unhurt,” Khetan added.

The AAP gave no further details. It was not immediately clear if Kejriwal, who usually sits to the left of the driver, continued with his journey or not.

The AAP put out a photograph showing the shattered front glass pane with a visibly worried Punjab police officer standing close by. The car appeared to be stranded on a rural road, with a police vehicle in the front.

The AAP has emerged as a major player ahead of assembly elections in Punjab due next year.

Earlier, in October the workers had gone for a strike against the government for the payment of their salaries and regularisation of daily-wagers who had been working for over a decade.

Dalit student’s suicide ‘murder of democracy’: Kejriwal

January 19, 2016 by Nasheman

Arvind Kejriwal

New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday described the suicide of the Hyderabad Dalit student as “murder of democracy, social justice and equality”.

“It’s not suicide. It’s murder. It’s murder of democracy, social justice and equality. (Prime Minister Narendra) Modi ji should sack ministers and apologise to the nation,” Kejriwal said in a tweet.

“(The) Modi government (is) constitutionally duty bound to uplift Dalits. Instead, Modi ji’s ministers got five Dalit students ostracised and suspended.”

Rohith Vemula, a second-year research scholar of science, technology and society studies department at the University of Hyderabad, was found hanging from the ceiling of a room in the New Research Scholars’ Hostel late on Sunday.

He was one of the five Dalit students suspended and expelled from the hostel for staging a protest on the campus for the past 15 days.

Odd-even scheme starts in Delhi, overwhelmed by ‘success’, says Kejriwal

January 1, 2016 by Nasheman

delhi-traffic-pollution-cars

New Delhi: Delhi government’s odd-even scheme on car movement to curb pollution in the national capital started on Friday.

As per the rule, cars with odd-number registration would be allowed to ply on Friday.

Those not abiding the rule would be fined Rs.2,000.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said he was “overwhelmed” by the response of people towards the odd-even scheme here.

“I am truly overwhelmed by the response we have received so far. There are very less even-numbered cars on the roads. The plan seems to have been successful,” he told media.

He said the people of Delhi accepted the scheme “whole-heartedly”, adding “I am confident that in next five years people will show the way to rest of the country”.

“Delhi has done it! Reports so far very encouraging. Delhiites! You give me hope that you are capable of achieving big challenges,” Kejriwal said in a tweet.

“I am pooling my car and going to office with two ministers, my personal secretary and my joint secretary,” he said.

Mooted by the Delhi government, the odd-even scheme that allows odd and even-numbered private vehicles on the city roads on alternate days aims at reducing air pollution levels in the national capital.

DDCA official sought sex for selection: Kejriwal

December 29, 2015 by Nasheman

Arvind Kejriwal

New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday accused Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) official of asking for sex in return for selection of cricketers.

“A senior journalist came to me and said his wife was asked to come for sex in return for selection of his son in the cricket team,” Kejriwal told NDTV.

He did not name the journalist.

Kejriwal also said that “apart from the financial irregularities, there were other major wrong things happening including the sex racket”.

He said Prime Minister Narendra Modi should decide “whether to make DDCA inquiry null and void to protect (Finance Minister) Arun Jaitley”.

Won’t apologise to Jaitley: Kejriwal

December 28, 2015 by Nasheman

arvind-kejriwal

New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Monday said he will not apologise to Finance Minister Arun Jaitley over the DDCA row, and added that the Bharatiya Janata Party was “begging” for it.

“BJP almost begging me for an apology. Sorry. I won’t oblige them. Let Jaitley-ji be cross-examined in defamation cases. Let truth prevail,” Kejriwal tweeted.

Earlier on Sunday, the Bharatiya Janata Party sought an apology from Kejriwal, saying that Jaitley was not named in the report of the committee appointed by his government to probe alleged financial irregularities in the Delhi and Districts Cricket Association (DDCA).

“No clean chit ever given by any Delhi government probe. That report confirmed several instances of wrong-doings but did not fix responsibility,” Kejriwal said.

“It didn’t mention anyone’s name and recommended (an) enquiry commission to fix responsibility, which we have done now.”

Earlier in the day, former solicitor general Gopal Subramaniam agreed to chair the Commission of Inquiry to probe alleged financial irregularities in Delhi’s cricket body.

Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said that although the report on the DDCA did not name anyone, it certainly did not give a clean cheat to Jaitley who headed the board for over 13 years till 2013.

“The report has not named anyone in the corruption in DDCA. Then who has done corruption, ghosts,” Sisodia asked.

An atmosphere was being created that Jaitley has been given clean cheat in the matter but the fact is that the commission of inquiry has not even started the probe, he said.
