Asaram Bapu’s supporters attack police, seven injured

May 16, 2016 by Nasheman

Asaram Bapu

New Delhi: Police on Monday said they had registered a case of rioting against supporters of spiritual guru Asaram Bapu who attacked police personnel overnight here, injuring seven policemen.

According to police, the police personnel were injured when some 2,000 people demanding Asaram Bapu’s release stoned the Parliament Street police station in the heart of the city on Sunday night.

A few police vehicles were also damaged in the protest. No arrests have been made yet, a police officer told IANS.

Asaram Bapu, lodged in Jodhpur Jail in Rajasthan after his arrest in 2013, has been accused of sexually assaulting a 16-year-old girl. He has denied the charge.

Asaram Bapu rape case: Victim’s father gets threat

March 21, 2016 by Nasheman

Asaram Bapu

Shahjahanpur: Days after a sharp shooter who killed 3 witnesses in Asaram cases was nabbed, father of the girl, who was allegedly sexually assaulted by Asaram Bapu, has been threatened by an unidentified person to withdraw the case or face dire consequences.

“Some person had called me yesterday threatening me to withdraw the case against Asaram Bapu. The caller said that if the case is not withdrawn, I will be killed,” the victim’s father said in his police complaint yesterday.

Superintendent of Police, Manoj Kumar said that security has been beefed up at the victim’s residence and probe is on in the matter.

On March 13, Kartik Haldar, self-styled godman Asaram Bapu’s alleged henchman, suspected to have shot dead three key witnesses in rape cases filed against the religious leader, was arrested by Anti-Terrorism Squad of Gujarat.

He was allegedly involved in the killings of Asaram’s personal doctor Amrut Prajapati in June 2014, his assistant-cum-cook Akhil Gupta in January 2015 and another key witness, Kripal Singh, on July 10, 2015 in different parts of the country, said a release.

All of them were shot from close range as part of a conspiracy to eliminate those who had given their testimonies against Asaram, ATS said.

Kripal Singh was a clerk in the office of a transporter whose minor daughter had lodged a case of sexual assault against Asaram in Jodhpur.

Asaram had allegedly sexually assaulted the 16-year-old victim at his ashram near Jodhpur in Rajasthan in 2013.

Worship parents on Valentine’s Day: Asaram Bapu’s ads in Delhi Metro

February 9, 2016 by Nasheman

bapu

New Delhi: This February 14, worship your parents instead of celebrating Valentine’s Day, say a series of billboards put up at Delhi Metro stations by a religious group, which also endorsed police action against couples.

The advertisements, put up across 35 stations by an organisation of self-styled godman Asaram Bapu, advocating ‘Matri Pitri Pujan Diwas’ has left many commuters enraged, prompting Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) to order the matter to be examined. Asaram is lodged in jail in connection with a sexual assault case.

The ads bear two contrasting pictures; one showing two kids worshipping their parents and the other showing a young couple holding each other’s ears as policemen stand nearby.

“Police take strong action against those indulging in degenerate activities by celebrating Valentine’s Day in broad daylight. Don’t celebrate Valentine’s Day,” the message in the posters say.

“The ads were displayed by a private contractor as all the ad space inside the Delhi Metro premises are allotted to specialised agencies who in turn allot them to interested advertisers. The matter is being thoroughly examined and taken up with the concerned contractor for necessary action,” DMRC chief spokesman Anuj Dayal said.

When contacted, a functionary of ‘Bal Sanskar Kendra’, the organisation behind the posters, said the objective of the ad campaign was to make youngsters “aware” that Valentine’s Day was “against Indian culture”.

“The picture depicts the plight of a couple who were caught celebrating Valentine’s Day in a public park at Raipur where the state government officially celebrates ‘Matri Pitri Pujan Diwas’. We want other state governments to come up with similar orders,” Manish Goswami, the functionary said.

The posters also made a few wonder about the advertising policy of DMRC. “I guess Delhi Metro will put up just about anything if you pay them enough money,” Govind RS posted on Facebook.

A DMRC executive said the company follows the Delhi Outdoor Advertising Policy, 2008 and does not have its own policy in this regard.

Unlike DMRC, Transport for London, which runs the vast London subway train service, has its own advertising policy.

“Technology wise we compete with west, #mentality wise we compete with 19th century !!” one Hamraj Singh posted on Twitter, while a tweet by one Shalu Dyani reads, “Asaram Bapu’s ads in Delhi Metro threatening couples celebrating Valentines! DMRC has some serious explaining to do.”

August 3, 2015 by Nasheman

Asaram Bapu

Jodhpur: Rape accused Asaram features in a chapter on saints in a Class III textbook in the district, sharing space with Vivekananda, Mother Teresa and Ramakrishna Paramhans.

Yoga guru Ramdev is also included in the list of saints in the moral education and GK textbook ‘Naya Ujala’ which is taught in many schools of the district.

The chapter also has pictures of Guru Nanak, Kabir, Meerabai and Shankaracharya and the children have been asked to identify them including Asaram, who is in a Jodhpur jail after being arrested in a rape case.

The book has been supplied by a Delhi-based publisher Gurukul Education Books.

Asked about the inclusion of Asaram’s name, a representative of the publishing house said when the book was published, there was no case against Asaram.

“Now we are withdrawing the books from the market and are preparing a new edition of the book sans Asaram”, he said.

When officials of the education department were asked about the book, they expressed ignorance about the matter.

However, they said notices would be issued to the school authorities where the textbook is part of the curriculum.

Asaram is in jail since August 2013 on charges of sexual assault. He was arrested after a 16-year-old girl lodged a police complaint, alleging that the self-styled godman sexually assaulted her at his ashram in Jodhpur.

Ahmedabad: Self-styled spiritual guru and rape accused Asaram’s son Narayan Sai, jailed in a rape case, was today granted three weeks’ temporary bail by the Gujarat High Court to attend to his ailling mother, who is schedule to undergo a surgery.

Justice V M Pancholi granted conditional temporary bail to Sai, who will remain under police surveillance during his bail period.

The court told Sai to surrender in four days from the date of his release from Surat jail if his mother’s surgery does not take place till then.

Sai, who is in jail since December 2013, is likely to come out of Surat jail tomorrow.

Rape accused spiritual guru Asaram.

The relief for Sai came amid reports of attacks on witnesses of rape cases against him and his father Asaram, who is behind bars in Jodhpur in connection with a rape case.

A key witness, Mahendra Chawla, was attacked in Panipat district of Haryana on May 13 this year. Till now, two persons, who had given testimonies in the rape case, have been killed and four persons, including Chawla, faced attacks.

In June last year, Gujarat-based witness Amrut Prajapati was shot dead in June last year at his clinic in Rajkot. Another prosecution witness, Akhil Gupta, was also shot dead in Uttar Pradesh’s Muzaffarnagar.

The High Court had on April 16 granted three-week bail to Sai for attending the proposed surgery of his mother Lakshmiben for a cervical ailment at a hospital in Ahmedabad.

However, the Supreme Court had on April 29 modified the order saying that Sai would be released on bail only after the date of his mother’s operation was fixed.

The apex court had acted then on a plea of Gujarat police seeking cancellation of interim bail granted to Sai on various grounds including that the accused may tamper with evidence in the case in which charges are yet to be framed.

Sai is behind bars since December 2013 in the rape case filed by two Surat-based sisters.

The sisters from Surat had lodged two different rape complaints against Sai and Asaram.

Sai’s mother Lakshmiben was also booked in the alleged rape case filed against Asaram by one of the sisters. Later, she was granted bail.

Sai was booked under various IPC sections, including rape, unnatural sex, molestation, wrongful confinement, unlawful assembly, rioting armed with deadly weapon, criminal intimidation and criminal conspiracy.

The younger of the two sisters had in her complaint accused Sai of repeated sexual assault between 2002 and 2005 when she was living at his Surat ashram.

Woman who filed rape case against Asaram goes ‘missing’

December 26, 2014 by Nasheman

Asaram-Bapu

Ahmedabad: A 33-year-old married woman, who had filed a case of sexual assault against self-styled godman Asaram Bapu, is mysteriously missing for over a week along with her son and husband, police said on Thursday.

“A victim of rape, who had accused Asaram of sexual assault, went missing along with her son and husband more than a week ago,” Sub-Inspector N M Ahir of Kamrej Police Station in Surat city told PTI over phone.

“Police department had provided four Constables to the victim for her protection. On December 14, the victim informed our personnel that her family members were going to attend a marriage in Amroli area in the city where they did not require police protection,” he said.

The Constables remained posted outside her home but neither the woman nor her son or husband returned. This led police to file a missing complaint on December 18, Ahir said.

Police later found that there was no marriage in the victim’s social circuit in Amroli on that day. Their cellphones are switched-off, making it difficult to trace them, the Sub-Inspector said.

A probe is underway to locate them, he added. Before disappearing, the Surat-based woman had filed an application in a court saying she wanted to change her statement recorded under Section 164 of CrPC in the case.

The statement recorded under the said Section is admissible at the stage of trial unlike the one recorded before police. However, the court in Gandhinagar rejected her plea last Monday.

The women had last year filed a police complaint and accused Asaram Bapu of sexual assault between 1997 and 2006 when she was staying in his ashram on the outskirts of Ahmedabad.

Her younger sister had filed a separate complaint against 76-year-old Asaram’s son Narayan Sai, accusing him of repeated sexual assault between 2002 and 2005 when she was living in his Surat ashram. Gujarat Police filed a chargesheet against Asaram in January this year.

The religious preacher has been charged with rape, illegal confinement and criminal conspiracy. He is lodged in a Rajasthan jail in another rape case.
