Poison of communal frenzy have no place in India: Modi

August 15, 2015 by Nasheman

Modi

New Delhi: In a marathon address to the nation from the ramparts of Red Fort, PM today underlined India’s unity and diversity and said the poison of casteism and communal frenzy have no place in the country.

Modi, in his second Independence Day address, focussed largely on the issue of corruption and asserted that the steps taken by his government over the last 15 months to deal with the “termite” had started yielding results.

Responding to opposition criticism that nothing is happening on the problem of black money, he said “some people love to spread pessimism” as he informed that about Rs 6500 cr of undeclared money has been disclosed during the compliance window provided by the government.

He spoke about a number of initiatives to end corruption and bring transparency and proposed doing away with the practice interviews for small jobs, contending that this becomes a route for corruption.

During the 85-minute address, he talked about the much-anticipated ‘One-Rank, One-Pension’, saying the government has “in-principle accepted” it and he was hopeful of a positive outcome of the ongoing discussions which are in the “last stage”.

He mentioned the announcements made during his first Independence Day address last year and said many of them had been implemented in a time-bound manner.

The government programmes are focussed on welfare of the poor and other under privileged sections while ensuring reduction in inflation and efforts to boost growth to double digit, he said.

While talking about efforts for development, Modi made a strong pitch for communal harmony and peace. “The world keeps signing praise about India’s diversity and greatness. Like diversity, the country also has simplicity and unity, which are our capital.

These have been nurtured over the centuries. This capital has to be preserved,” he said.

“Be it the poison of casteism or the frenzy of communalism, these have no place in the country and should not be allowed to grow. These ills have to be eradicated through the nectar of development,” he said.

Modi said if the unity of India is destroyed, then the “dreams” of the people will also be shattered as the country looking forward to development and progress.

Talking about the issue of corruption which he described as “termite”, the Prime Minister vowed to free the country from this evil “braving all kinds of attacks” on him as he asserted that there is not an allegation of even Re one corruption against his 15-month-old government.

“There is a lot of talk in our country about corruption. It is like a sick person giving suggestions to others on how to remain healthy, there are people who are themselves corrupt, who give suggestions on how to deal with corruption,” he said.

“Giving suggestions to each other is also an art. I want to give an account today…We have not shown our commitment to fight corruption by addressing press conferences. We are working on the ground. We have shown results,” he said.

He said the “termite” had spread but nobody took any action against it over the last 60 years. “There is a requirement of applying injection per square metre for a long time to deal with this termite,” Modi said.

Responding to criticism, he said, “some people love to spread pessimism. It is like an addiction. They cannot get sleep without it. For them, there is no meaning for programmes and initiatives. They keep on saying that nothing is happening, nothing is visible.”

Though he did not name anybody, his remarks assume significance as Rahul Gandhi had only last week in Parliament questioned what had been done on dealing with black money.

Mentioning the new Act made on black money, he said people have been complaining that it is “too tough” a law. “We have received messages that the law is too tough and it should be diluted,” he said, without naming anybody.

Likening it to treating a serious ailment which requires administering strong medicines, he said, “there can be side-effects but the ailment has to be cured.”

He said through the new law, while efforts are being made to bring back black money already stashed abroad, it has at least ensured that nobody dares to take tainted money out of the country.

He said through the compliance window provided by the government, around Rs 6500 crore of undeclared money has already been disclosed. “Is it not fighting corruption?”

Nitish to launch new campaign, says 50 lakh people will send DNA samples to Modi

August 10, 2015 by Nasheman

Modi-Nitish-

Patna: The war of words between Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reached a new level with Nitish’s new ‘shabdwapsi’ campaign.

Hitting back at Modi for his DNA remark, Nitish tweeted today, “In this shabdwapsi /take back your words/ campaign, at least 50 lakh people of Bihar will join the campaign and send their DNA samples to Modiji for test.”

Nitish Kumar’s Janata Dal United and Lalu Prasad’s Rashtriya Janata Dal are expected to launch this campaign jointly and send DNA samples of at least 50 lakh people to the Prime Minister.

Two weeks back, PM Modi had made the controversial statement that deceit and treachery are in the Chief Minister’s DNA. Nitish questioned the remark in an open letter to the PM and asked him to withdraw those remarks as it insulted the people of Bihar.

Inspite of our repeated pleas Modiji hasn’t retracted his derogatory remarks on our DNA, we’re going to launch शब्दवापसी /TakeBackYourWords
— Nitish Kumar (@NitishKumar) August 10, 2015

DNAके अपने वक्तव्य को वापिस न लेने की मोदीजी की हठधर्मिता और फिर कल गया रैली में बिहार को बीमारू और लोगों को दुर्भाग्यशाली बताना क्षोबनीय है
— Nitish Kumar (@NitishKumar) August 10, 2015

हमारा यह विश्वास है कि बिहार और बिहार की जनता को अपमानित करने वालों को यहाँ की जनता माकूल जवाब देगी

Holy cow! India is world’s largest exporter of beef

August 10, 2015 by Nasheman

beef-export

New Delhi: Despite Modi government’s move to ban slaughter of cow across various states in the country, India is the largest exporter of beef in the world.

According to a report in The Hindu, India retained it’s top position as the world’s leading exporter of beef and even extended its lead over Brazil, citing a data released by the US Department of Agriculture.

As per the data, India exported 2.4 million tonnes of beef and veal in the financial year 2015 as compared to 2 the million tonnes exported by Brazil. During the same period, Australia exported 1.5 million tonnes, the report said.

And while these three countries account for 58.7 percent of all the beef exports in the world, India alone accounted for 23.5 percent of the exports, a significant rise from the 20.8 percent share that it had in the previous year.

According to reports, cow slaughter is banned in the following states of India – Andhra Pradesh, Telangana , Bihar, Chattisgarh, Delhi, Goa, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Punjab, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand.

In Assam, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal, it is permitted with slaughter certificates.

However, in Arunachal Pradesh, Kerala, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura, cow slaughter is permitted.

Modi government is losing its Sheen: Rahul Bajaj

August 8, 2015 by Nasheman

Rahul-Bajaj

New Delhi: Top industrialist Rahul Bajaj has come down heavily on the Narendra Modi-led Central government, saying the shine was wearing off it. Speaking to NDTV’s Sreenivasan Jain, the chairman of the Bajaj Group said, “We had an emperor on 27th of May 2014. Very few places in the world in the last 20-30 years (have) a success like that in the history of a nation. I am not anti this government. But the fact does remain, the shine seems to be wearing off.”

Bajaj was also critical of the government’s black money law. He said it was drafted with a vengeance. “I think drafting has been done with a clear presumption, which I feel, I can’t say for the whole group. I have no sympathy for people who did that. So, this has been done with a vengeance,” he said.

The Act, enacted after high-pitched politicking, deals with the menace of black money stashed abroad and provides stringent punishment of up to 10 years rigorous imprisonment and penalty of 90 per cent along with 30 per cent tax for wilful attempt to evade tax on assets held abroad by a resident.

Given the tough provisions of the Act, the government has also provided for a three-month compliance window up to September 30 to declare such assets and income held abroad under Chapter VI and pay tax and penalty of 30 per cent each by December 31 to escape prosecution.

“I declare it and then you say it’s an illegal declaration.” If that is the case, Bajaj says, “I can’t declare. I won’t declare. I will take my chances, go to Supreme Court, and fight it out. In my lifetime, nothing will happen to me.

Sushma’s family received money from Lalit Modi: Rahul Gandhi

August 7, 2015 by Nasheman

Rahul-Gandhi

New Delhi: Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi on Friday said that External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj’s family has “received money” from former IPL chairman Lalit Modi.

“Whenever there is a robbery or stealing, a financial transfer takes place. There has been a financial transfer here as well. Sushma’s family has received money from Lalit Modi. She should tell the country exactly how much money Lalit Modi has paid her family to keep himself out of jail,” Gandhi said outside parliament.

Sushma Swaraj on Thursday told the Lok Sabha that she did not recommend to the British government to give travel documents to former IPL chief Lalit Modi. She also said the allegations against her of recommending travel documents for Lalit Modi were “wrong and baseless”.

The minister had also questioned Congress president Sonia Gandhi what she would have done had she been in her place.

Rahul Gandhi said: “As Sonia Gandhi’s son I can say she would not have done the same thing. Whenever there is some stealing happens, secrecy is maintained by the thief. In this case, Sushma has maintained full secrecy. Nobody in the ministry other than Sushma Swaraj knew about this decision. After this decision, government of the United Kingdom changed their position.”

Sushma expert at theatrical politics: Sonia Gandhi

Congress president Sonia Gandhi said on Friday that External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj is an expert at “indulging in theatrical politics”.

Sushma Swaraj had said on Thursday that she was ready to face the consequences if helping former IPL chairman Lalit Modi’s wife on humanitarian grounds was a crime.

“She (Sushma Swaraj) is an expert at indulging in theatrical politics,” said Sonia Gandhi before she joined her party colleagues protesting the suspension of 25 Congress MPs by Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan.

FTII Row: Film-maker Girish Kasaravalli slams Paresh Rawal for Rahul Gandhi jibe

August 5, 2015 by Nasheman

girish-kasaravalli-slams-paresh-rawal

Bengaluru: National Award-winning film-maker Girish Kasaravalli today hit out at BJP MP and actor Paresh Rawal for his jibe at Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi inconnection with the row over the appointment of Gajendra Chauhan as the FTII chairman.

Responding sharply to Rawal’s remark whether the striking students of the premier Pune institute were seeing an “actor” in Gandhi if Chauhan was, for them, a “political worker”, the Kannada director told PTI, “That is a stupid argument… If he (Rawal) says it is wrong, then that person does not understand democracy at all.”

Kasaravalli said that the students protesting against Chauhan’s appointment have not accepted Gandhi as their chairperson, but were seeking his help to take the issue to Parliament.

“They are not accepting Gandhi as chairperson. They areseeking his help and support; in a democracy, you go to MPs for support. What’s wrong in that,” he said.

In a dig at the Congress leader for “politicising” the FTII issue, Rawal had said, “I just want to ask the students at FTII that if they are seeing a political worker in Gajendra Chauhan, then are they seeing an actor in Rahul Gandhi?”

Kasaravalli, meanwhile, said that in case the protesters were to accept Gandhi as their chairperson, then he would be the first to raise his voice against such a development.

“If they accept Gandhi as the chairperson, I will be the first person not to accept that,” he said.

Asked if he would accept actor-turned-BJP leaders Vinod Khanna, Hema Malini and Shatrughan Sinha as the FTII chairperson, Kasaravalli said, “We are demanding a committee to be formed to find a replacement. That is left to the committee. How can I say?”

As to whether Nana Patekar, for him, could be a choice for the said post, he averred, “I know Nana Patekar as an actor. I do not know about his film-making abilities. For me, the FTII chairperson should be a complete film-maker.”

Kasaravalli further said that the post should not be given to a member of a particular political party as that would not the right approach.

“UR Ananthamurthy and Mrinal Sen were appointed by the Atal Bihari Vajpayee and previous UPA governments, respectively, knowing full well that they were critics of BJP and Congress,” he added.

Supporting the cause of the protesters, Kasaravalli sought the resignation of Chauhan saying he is an “ill-informed” film personality, even if a good actor.

“Chauhan should be replaced or resign himself. He is ill-informed. He is not the right choice. When you have legendary film personalities, why bring the young man. He is not a senior. He is not a seasoned man,” Kasaravalli said.

Congress, NCP, TMC boycott Lok Sabha; SP, Left, RJD walkout

August 4, 2015 by Nasheman

modi

New Delhi: A combative opposition today launched a united protest in Lok Sabha against the suspension of 25 Congress MPs, as members of the Congress, TMC and NCP boycotted the proceedings and those of the Left, SP and RJD walked out soon after the House met.

As soon as the House met for the day, members from Left parties, SP and RJD wanted to raise some issues but were disallowed by Speaker Sumitra Mahajan, who also rejected their adjournment notices and asked them to raise the issue during Zero Hour.

Soon thereafter when the House took up Question Hour, Jai Prakash Narayan Yadav (RJD) raised slogans like ‘take back suspension’. He was soon joined by members from the Left and SP.

After shouting slogans from their benches, they staged a walkout. Those who walked out included SP supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav and P Karunakaran (CPI-M), leaving the opposition benches virtually deserted.

The front row of the opposition benches were completely empty, barring only one seat occupied by AIADMK leader P Venugopal. Members of the Congress, NCP, JD(U) and Trinamool Congress and Muslim League, were not present in the House.

All these parties are boycotting the House for the next five days in solidarity with the 25 suspended Congress members. As the walkout was being staged, five members of YSR Congress rushed to Well demanding special category status for Andhra Pradesh.

TRS members from Telangana stood on the aisles demanding a separate high court for their state.

Despite repeated efforts by the Speaker, they refused to return to their seats.

“Till yesterday, you were not there. Only today you have raised the issue…you have copies of the rule book. Still you want to break the rules,” she said.

Home Minister Rajnath Singh assured the agitating members that the Centre will ensure justice for Andhra Pradesh. “I assure you there will be no injustice…as for the demand for a separate High Court in

Telangana, I spoke with the Law Minister (D V Sadananda Gowda). He is working on finding a solution,” he said. Despite the assurances, the USR Congress and TRS members continued with their protest.
