Movie Review: ‘Dirty Boss’ is like an old wine in a new bottle type of comic caper

March 16, 2016 by Shaheen Raaj

Dirty Boss

Producer: DJ Kanwaljeet
Director: Kesar Matharu
Star Cast: Raju Kher, Jasleen Matharu, Geetu Gambhir, Kalyani Thakkar, Kesar Matharu, Pinky More, Mushtaq Khan, Shahzad & Anil Nagrath

Actor director Kesar Matharu in his latest offering Dirty Boss has made a sequel to his earlier prequel movie namely Dirty Relations

Bhundi (Raju Kher) is a wealthy businessman who gests lured to the showbiz world due to his hidden lusty desires for an actress named Diana (Jasleen Matharu). A film director named Chaluji (Kesar Matharu) then contacts Bhundi and invites him to the sets of his film and introduces him to his heroine Diana and instantly Bhundi decides to produce a film. On hearing this Bhundi’s wife Satti (Kalyani Thakker) & her father tries to put some sense in him but to no avail. Satti then comes on the sets, and a big fight ensues between Satti & Diana. On the other hand Bhundi is such a lecherous man that he also has an affair with his maid servant Sandhya (Geetu Gambhir).

Dirty Boss is an eye opener for those people who are lured by the glamour of the film industry and then how they are taken for a joyride by a chosen few of the industry people who thrive on such suckers. Direction wise a little more control on the goings on was required and the same can be said about the performance of the actors.

The scenario of Dirty Boss could have been a little more taut. But the aam janta will definitely enjoy its double entendre dialogues which will certainly leave them in splits.

Tail Piece: Director Kesar Matharu’s earlier film Dirty Relations also treaded on similar grounds and now same is the case with his franchise Dirty Boss.

Movie Review: ‘Tera Suroor’ is a typical run of the mill fare

March 16, 2016 by Shaheen Raaj

Tera Suroor

Producer: Vipin Reshamiya & Sonia Kapoor
Director: Shawn Aranha
Star Cast: Himesh Reshamiya, Farah Kaimaee, Shekhar Kapoor, Naseeruddin Shah, Monica Dogra, Kabir Bedi, Shernaaz Patel, Sunil Dutt etc

Director Shawn Aranha in his latest directorial offering Tera Saroor has concentrated more on enjoying the locales of Ireland rather than focusing on any other aspects of the film and the result has been not so encouraging.

Tara Wadia (debutante Farah Karimaee), a singer and girlfriend of a gangster Raghu (Himesh Reshamiya) lives with her mother (Shernaz Patel). After having a little lovers tiff with Raghu she goes off to to Dublin to take part in a singing concert, but on her way to the venue she gets detained after being caught with packets of Drugs in a book cover. Tara then frantically calls Raghu for help and then Raghu too decides to help her and find Anirudh Brahman (Sunil Dutt), who had initially framed her to take his revenge. He was the same stranger who had earlier met Tara on Facebook and had also invited her to Ireland.

The directorial treatment of director Shawn Aranha has played the spoil sport in the entire movie. Yet the mainstay of Tera Saroor is of course the musical score topped with the breath taking locales of Ireland.

As for the performances of the entire cast the less said the better.

9 years ago Himesh Reshamiya had come up with Aap Ka Saroor, the prequel which was quite entertaining but now in Tera Saroor, the sequel which is no doubt packed with all the commercial masala oriented ingredients but yet you feel as if something is still missing as you walk out of the darkened auditorium.

Tail Piece: Tera Suroor is strictly recommended for its locales, styling & costumes, topped with its hummable songs and action sequences galore, but not necessarily in that order.

Rocky Handsome will prove to be a milestone of our musical career: Sunny Bawra & Inder Bawra

March 16, 2016 by Shaheen Raaj

Rocky Handsome

The latest music composer jodi to create ripples of waves on Bollywood’s musical horizon are Sunny Bawra and Inder Bawra. The music of their, just around the corner release, is John Abraham’s Rocky Handsome. The “Rehnuma” song of Rocky Handsome has already proved to be a chartbursting hit record in the entire musical arena.

How and from where did your musical journey begun?

We begun our musical journey with the small screen’s devotionally oriented mythological serials like Dwarkadheesh – Bhagwaan Shree Krishna, Siya Ke Ram, Meera, Devon Ke Dev……. Mahadev and many more. We do not hail from a typical musical family but our forefathers were indeed non – filmi singers in their own right so both of us decided to carry forward this musical journey on our own.

Please continue!

We landed in Bombay nay Mumbai, the 1st & foremost thing we did was to adjust and familiarise ourselves with Bollywood’s music and the people around here. Then begun our long and arduous struggling phase and finally we landed in the Sagar camp, who are known to encourage new music composers too. And then onwards began our small screen innings as mentioned above.

And then how did the big screen began?

From the small screen Sagar camp we landed up in the big screen Bhatt camp. I think they really liked our small screen’s over all music. So we ended up composing music for two of their hit films namely Hate Story 2 and Hate Story 3. The music of both Hate Story 2 and Hate Story 3 was really appreciated by one and all including the rave reviews by music hardcore music critics too.

What are the highlights of the music of Rocky Handsome and how did you bag this prestigious assignment of your career?

First of all we are very lucky to have bagged this prestigious assignment of Rocky Handsome, a film from John Abraham’s home production banner namely JA Entertainment. The main highlight of Rocky Handsome is one of the song composed by us namely “Rahnuma” which has already hit the music circles with a million hit on YouTube channel. We have other songs too in Rocky Handsome, but we can’t reveal anything more about it unless they are officially released. But we are 100% sure that Rocky Handsome will definitely prove to be milestone in our musical career.

What do you think about today’s deafningly cacophonic especially the rock and the rap kind of music? Don’t you think that melody is seriously missing?

Yes! You are right. Melody is seriously missing in today’s music and as for your other point this are just the varied music which are like changing seasons which comes and passes away. And the music lovers taste too, changes like every turn of the season. That’s it.

Bollywood has seen many hit musical jodis like Shankar – Jaikishan, Kalyanji – Anandji, Lakshmikant – Pyarelal, Sapan – Jagmohan, Jatin – Lalit, Nadeem – Shravan etc. So do you think the Sunny Bawra – Inder Bawra jodi will also succeed in carving a niche for themselves?

First of all let us clarify one thing that we are not friends or partners but in fact real blood brothers. I think we are very near to carving a niche for ourselves. We don’t know if we will be able to succeed and become one more hit jodi of Bollywood or not like all the superhit musical jodis mentioned above. They are all legendary music composers. We have miles and miles to traverse on the musical road to attain their kind of success. But once again we would like to stress that come whatever may Sunny Bawra and Inder Bawra are here to stay. And if have to became one more hit pair of music directors like the others we might as well drop the Bawra, even otherwise we are not related to the legendary lyricist Gulshan Bawra, and become one more hit jodi of Sunny – Inder. What say! Anyways we are Just kidding!

Movie Review: ‘Phuntroo’ is quite an interesting science fiction oriented love story

March 12, 2016 by Shaheen Raaj

Phuntroo

Producer: Producer: Vandana Thakur and Ajay Thakur Producer: Vandana Thakur and Ajay Thakur
Director: Sujay Dahake
Star Cast: Madan Deaodhar, Ketaki Mategaonkar, Shivraj Vaichal,
Shivani Rangole, Ruturaj Shinde, Anshuman, Rohit Nikam etc
Genre: Sci – fi & Romance
Verdict: GOOD

Plot: Vira (Madan Deodhar) is a brilliant young engineering student who stumbles upon a peculiar gadget designed by one of his professors. A competition titled ‘Gadget Day’ has the students competing for the best new gadget and everybody is coming up with schemes on how to win. Anaya (Ketaki Mategaonkar) is the college’s secretary and a gifted student who catches Vira’s eye. He falls in love with her, but alas it’s unrequited. He goes on to develop the gadget he found and creates an Artificial Intelligence entity, a figure that resembles both in physical form and voice, his one true love, Anaya. Chaos ensues when he tries to hide it from his friends.

Aces: Director Sujay Dahake has made a very gripping science fiction thriller in which the younger generation of actors have put their best foot forward in their individual characters assigned to them and the best of the lot is of course the lead pair of Madan Deodhar & Ketaki Mategaonkar.

Minuses: Phuntroo is a love story based on a backdrop of a science fiction thriller which is quite new and perhaps unacceptable to the stereotyped Marathi audiences who are still fond of their staple diet of lavani’s and tamashas.

Last Word: Yet all said & done the multiplexes’ city audiences are definitely going to like this daringly different movie.

Movie Review: ‘Anuraag’ is emotionally very engaging

March 12, 2016 by Shaheen Raaj

Anuraag

Producer: Dr. Aparna Darak & RRP Corporations Pvt Ltd
Director: Dr. Ambarish Darak
Star Cast: Mrunmayee Deshpande and Dharmendra Gohil
Genre: Drama
Verdict: GOOD

Plot: Rishabh (Dharmendra Gohil), a successful businessman, has married Saumya (Mrunmayee Deshpande) after the death of his 1st wife and has a daughter from the 1st marriage. Saumya used to be his secretary and slipped into the new role comfortably. The 1st setback was the difficulties during her pregnancy, and the relationship spiralled downwards from that point. All this forms a part of the back-story glimpsed through some key flashback sequences. A majority of the film happens during their Leh visit, a last ditch effort to save the marriage, with a possibility for things to go either way.

All this forms a part of the back-story glimpsed through some key flashback sequences. A majority of the film happens during their Leh visit, a last ditch effort to save the marriage, with a possibility for things to go either way.

Aces: The film is emotionally very engaging in fact director Dr. Ambarish Darak has made an extremely sensitive film on marital relationship which sometimes end up in marital discord and then the characters more often than not try reliving their happier moments through their memories.

Minuses: The film though inspired by Hollywood director Richard Linklater’s film Before Twilight lacks conviction in over all presentation. The fault lies mainly in its screen writing part.

Last Word: On the whole Anuraag reflects more of a serious kind of cinema and may appeal to the elite multiplex and fest circuit audiences, but it is hardly a common man’s cup of tea.

Movie Review: ‘Jai Gangaajal’ is a gripping thriller which as a mass appeal

March 7, 2016 by Shaheen Raaj

Jai Gangaajal

Producer: Prakash Jha
Director: Prakash Jha
Star Cast: Priyanka Chopra, Prakash Jha, Manav Kaul, Rahul Bhat, Ninad Kamat, Jagat Singh, Murli Sharma, Vega Tamotia, Sambit Samal, Queen Harish, Mikhail Yawalkar & Master Ayush Mahesh Khedekar
Music: Salim – Suleiman

Director Prakash Jha has made many milestone movies in his career but since the release of his film Gangaajal he has concentrated on hinterland themes. Even in Jai Gangajal he revisits the place, but this time his focus is mainly on the relationship between the society and the police.

The plotted scenario of Jai Gangajal opens with the corrupt cop B. N. Singh (Prakash Jha) and his nexus with the local MLA Babloo Panday (Manav Kaul) and his wily brother Dablu Pandey (Ninad Kamat) followed by the local henchmen Munna Mardani (Murli Sharma). At this juncture Abha Mathur (Priyanka Chopra) is appointed as the 1st female SP of Bankipur district, Madhya Pradesh. Abha then decides to weed out the rampant corruption of Bankipur – Lakhisarai district, for this she goes against the local MLA Babloo Pandey and his entire coterie of henchmens.

Performance wise Jai Gangajal mainly revolves around the trio of B. N. Singh, Babloo Pandey & SP Abha Mathur. Prakash Jha in his debut acting role as a corrupt but reformed cop is picture perfect. And as a director too he has made a very gripping thriller which has a mass appeal. Manav Kaul as the local MLA has delivered a par excellence act. As for Priyanka Chopra as the 1st female SP is superb. Even the rest of the cast, comprising of Rahul Bhat, Ninad Kamat, Jagat Singh, Murli Sharma, Vega Tamotia, Sambit Samal, Queen Harish, Mikhail Yawalkar & Master Ayush Mahesh Khedekar, is adequate and helps in carrying the story forward.

But It is the excessive length of the movie and the routine musical score by Salim – Suleiman which proves to be a stumbling block.

Tail Piece: Facing no opposition in the coming week, Jai Gangaajal will surely prove to be a gaining proposition at the Box Office turnstiles.

Movie Review: ‘Tere Bin Laden: Dead Or Alive’ is not at all worthy of its prequel

March 2, 2016 by Shaheen Raaj

Tere Bin Laden Dead Or Alive

Banner: Walkwater Media
Producers: Pooja Shetty Deora & Aarti Shetty
Director: Abhishek Sharma
Star Cast: Manish Paul, Sikander Kher, Pradhuman Singh, Mia Uyeda, Piyush Mishra, Sugandha Garg and above all President Obama
Music: Dhruv Dhalla

Writer-director Abhishek Sharma tried his level best to make a worthy sequel in Tere Bin Laden: Dead Or Alive but has miserably failed to recreate the magic of its prequel Tere Bin Laden.

So this time, it’s operation ‘Osama Dead or Alive?’ Set against Osama Bin Laden’s mysterious death followed by counter reports claiming he is alive, stirring the biggest controversy in the world. The US wants to prove to the world that they shot him dead while Khalili (Piyush Mishra) the terrorist arms dealer wants the world to believe he is alive. In fact Tere Bin Laden – Dead or Alive is a whacky comical satire that misfires as it transpires in this desperate tug of war between US & the Terrorists. Stuck in this distressed crossfire is a budding Bollywood film director Sharma (Manish Paul) looking for a big break, gets hired by US agent David Chaddha (Sikander) on the pretext of making a Hollywood film on Osama using his doppelgänger Paddi Singh (Pradhuman Singh). The hidden motive is to shoot a fake tape to prove his death.

Director Abhishek Sharma has made a complete mess in trying to justify a sequel of a cult & iconic film like Tere Bin Laden. Truthfully speaking Tere Bin Laden was and still is one of the “Best Films” to have been made in the last decade. Nothing but nothing seems to work in favour of Tere Bin Laden: Dead Or Alive. Even the gags are forced down the audiences gullet. Which in turn hardly raises a full throated laughter. Need I say anything more.

Performance wise Pradhuman Singh turns out to be the biggest disappointment of all. Manish Paul’s (as himself) satirical comic attempt is laudable at times. Sikandar Kher unfortunately could not deliver the goods at all that too when he had the opportunity to enact a dual role. Ali Zafar in a cameo is hardly impressive or rather totally wasted to say the least. The extended cameo of President Obama was totally uncalled for and should have been dispensed with.

Tail Piece: Its safe to give miss to a lacklustre film like Tere Bin Laden: Dead Or Alive. In fact it will be better to watch the DVD of the prequel Tere Bin Laden. And if you are still curious to know what happens in the sequel Tere Bin Laden: Dead Or Alive then wait for its global premiere on the small screen.

Movie Review: ‘Neerja’ is an emotional biopic which leaves you teary eyed towards the end

March 2, 2016 by Shaheen Raaj

neerja-movie

Banner: Fox Star Studios
Producers: Atul Kasbekar, Shanti Sivaram Maini, Bling Unplugged & Fox Star Studios
Director: Ram Madhvani
Star Cast: Sonam Kapoor, Shabana Azmi, Shekhar Ravjiani, Kavi Shastri, Yogendra Tiku, Abrar Zahoor, Jim Sarbh, Ali Baldiwala, Vikrant Singta & Rehan Shaikh
Music: Vishal Khurana

Director Ram Madhwani in this latest offering Neerja has made a very heart touching and real life biopic on flight purser named Neerja Bhanot. The film revolves around the Libya backed Abu Nidal Organisation’s hijacking of Pan Am Flight 73 in Karachi, Pakistan on 5th Sept, 1986, specifically focusing on head purser Neerja Bhanot who thwarted the hijack attempt by preventing the plane from taking off, which resulted in the lives of 360 hostages being saved.

The plotted scenario of Neerja showcases her life’s journey and opens up with a 22 year old Neerja arriving late for a house party. A die – hard fan of Rajesh Khanna who remembers all his dialogues by heart. She was the youngest and the only girl in her family that had 2 brothers. Her parents Rama Bhanot & Harish Bhanot were her pillar who taught her not to lose hope, fight injustice with courage and to stand by what she believes in. Neerja loves her job but her mother was not excited about her job. 2 days before her birthday she boarded the plane as chief purser from Mumbai to New York via Karachi. As soon as the plane makes a halt at Karachi airport it is hijacked by the Libyan Terrorists. Neerja then cleverly informs the pilots and skilfully manipulates the terrorists and saves the passengers. She could have easily escaped but she chose humanity and sacrifices her life to save little kids. Even on her death bed her last message to her mother was, “Pushpa, I hate tears” which portrayed her bravery and her love for life. She was truly a courageous woman.

Director Ram Madhvani was perhaps lost in oblivion after his debut movie named Let’s Talk in 2002 had tanked miserably at the Box Office turnstiles. And now with his 2nd outing Neerja he makes a grand comeback. Needless to add that with Neerja he has proved his par excellence directorial prowess. Vishal Khurana’s soulful & soothing music is another highlight of the film.

Performance wise Sonam Kapoor in the title role of Neerja is simply terrific and beyond imagination. If only Neerja was her debut film. Once again it won’t be out of place to say that with Neerja, Sonam Kapoor has proved that indeed she too is the chip of the old block. Ironically speaking even her father Anil Kapoor could prove his histrionic versatility only after tucking in a couple of non -performing films under his belt. Shabana Azmi as usual is superb as Neerja Bhanot’s mother Rama Bhanot. She has literally lived the role. Yogendra Tiku as Neerja’s father is upto the mark. The music composer turned actor Shekhar Ravjiani does justice to his brief role. While the rest of the actor, also in their brief roles, like Kavi Shastri, Abrar Zahoor, Jim Sarbh, Ali Baldiwala, Vikrant Singta & Rehan Shaikh are adequate.

Tail Piece: Neerja is one film that should not be given a miss at any cost. In fact it’s a strongly recommended movie for one & all.

Movie Review: ‘Aligarh’ is a sensitive portrayal of a man who is fighting his inner & outer demons for his sexual orientation

March 2, 2016 by Shaheen Raaj

Aligarh

Banner: Eros Entertainment & Karma Pictures
Producers: Sunil Lulla & Shailesh R. Singh
Director: Hansal Mehta
Star Cast: Manoj Bajpai, Rajkummar Rao, Ashish Vidyarthi, Ishwak Singh, Nutan Surya, Divya Unny, Suman Vaidya & Master Devyansh Agnihotri

Director Hansal Mehta is known more for tackling themes which are more suited, or rather which are more often than not slotted, in the category of the middle of the road cinema. No doubt his kind of cinema wins a lot of critical acclaim topped with awards galore in global film fest circuit. Just like his latest offering Aligarh which got a standing ovation in Busan International Film Festival.

Aligarh’s plotted scenario starts off on the premises of Aligarh Muslim University, the very ‘Urdu dominated’ place where Professor Shrinivas Siras (Manoj Bajpayee) happens to teach Marathi to the students. The film gradually moves onto capturing the ‘intimate moments’ between Professor Shrinivas Siras and a rickshaw driver Irfan. The moment they get intimate with each other, 2 reporters (who claim to be from TV 100 channel) do a sting operation on the duo. As Siras & Irfan get caught in the act, Dr. Zuber Khan, Dr. Firoz Majid, Dr. Shadab Qureshi & Professor A. K. Murtuza from the university enter the room. Even though Dr. Shadab Qureshi (who also happens to be the college’s PRO) assures Siras that he will not leak his intimate video, yet he goes back on his words and tells the media all about the incident. The next day morning sees all the newspapers & channels screaming about Siras’ incident, which also results in a mob burning his effigies, human protests et al. All of this results in Professor Siras being suspended from the college and gets told to vacant the quarters within a week’s time. Meanwhile, a young & ‘fire in the belly’ journalist Deepu Sebastian (Rajkummar Rao) starts writing about the case arming himself with thorough investigation, because he feels that Siras is not guilty and could have been framed. Initially, Siras is reluctant to speak to Deepu about the incident because the latter is a journalist. But after a few meetings, Siras develops full faith in Deepu and he confides the whole incident that had taken place that night. While on one hand, Deepu goes all out to get justice for Siras, on the other hand, the court case against Siras only gets prolonged day after day. After days & days of struggle, when Deepu finally succeeds in being the ‘agent of change’ for Siras to get justice, a drunk Siras tells Deepu on the phone that he strongly feels that he should get settled in US as that’s where people of his sexual orientation get accepted with open arms.

Director Hansal Mehta deserves a standing ovation, a heartfelt salutation coupled with some brownie points for his par excellence directorial prowess in Aligarh. That apart hats off to its producers Sunil Lulla & Shailesh R. Singh for backing Aligarh with all their sincerity & their integrity. That apart a round of another standing ovation also goes to behind the scenes team of Apurva Asrani for his story, screenplay & editing, Karan Kulkarni for his background music & Satya Rai Nagpaul for his cinematography.

Performance wise Manoj Bajpayee is simply outstanding. He excellently & effortlessly conveys the humiliation & the pain by straight away getting into the skin of his character, seriously no other actor could have stepped into his shoes. So much so that Aligarh adds yet another milestone in his chequered career innings. While on the other hand Rajkummar Rao proves yet again that he is no doubt a gifted actor in his own right. That apart the rest of the cast comprising of Ashish Vidhyarthi, Ishwak Singh, Nutan Surya, Divya Unny, Suman Vaidya & Master Devyansh Agnihotri
bring in their own value added performances to make the film reach its goal.

Tail Piece: Sadly enough even though Aligarh is a sensitive, heart-wrenching & heart warming film it may appeal to a very niche segment of the multiplex audiences. It has already proved to be a critics delight but may not attract the masses, mainly the commercial entertainment starved audiences of the single theatres. All in all Aligarh is one classy film that will not attract the mass audiences.

Rocky Handsome’s Violence Puts Censor Board On The Defensive

John Abraham’s new film Rocky Handsome has got itself into a situation of conflict with the censor board. Reportedly the film is too violent for mass consumption and was reluctantly granted an ‘A’ certificate. However the makers are not willing to take the ‘A’ certificate. If you’ve seen the original Korean film The Man From Nowhere that too was a very violent film. Rocky Handsome has scenes of graphic violence. There are also references to human trafficking; the flesh trade & violence against children. No censor in the world would allow this film for universal exhibition.” Apparently the producers refused to take an ‘A’ certificate and insist on a ‘UA’ certificate.

Neerja Now Declared Tax Free In Uttar Pradesh & Delhi

Just recently Sonam Kapoor starrer Neerja directed by Ram Madhvani was declared Tax Free in the state of Maharashtra. And now the Gujarat Government has also granted the film a Tax Free status. While on one hand the film that released a week back has the audience going gaga over the story, on the other, the film has been receiving a Tax Free status in varied states. In fact after Maharashtra & Gujarat, Neerja has now been declared Tax Free in Uttar Pradesh & Delhi. Tweeting about the same, Akhilesh Yadav the Chief Minister Of Uttar Pradesh posted, “Neerja, the movie will be tax free in UP.” Responding to the tweet the film’s producer Atul Kasbekar immediately took to the social networking platform thanking him saying, “Awesome news! Thank You Hon CM @yadavakhilesh ji”.Following these tweets, Manish Sisodia the Deputy Chief Minister of Delhi posted a tweet saying, “Have ordered to make movie Neerja Tax free. Decison to be implemented with immediate effect. @sonamakapoor #NeerjaBhanot @AzmiShabana”. Later talking about the film Sisodia added, “We are grateful to you for reminding us about the brave #Neerja. Its so inspiring. @AzmiShabana”. Once again responding to the tweets Kasbekar added, “Thank you Sir and many thanks to the Hon CM @ArvindKejriwal for this prompt decision. #Neerja”.
