Dhawan, Kohli centuries put India on top

Galle: India skipper Virat Kohli struck an impressive century while opener Shikhar Dhawan scored 134 to help India extend their first innings lead to 121 runs at tea on Day 2 of the first Test against Sri Lanka at the Galle International Cricket Stadium here on Thursday.

Kohli (103) and Dhawan both looked settled for even bigger knocks but both fell in the second session, thus ending their 227-run third-wicket partnership.

Wriddhiman Saha (23 not out) and Harbhajan Singh (0 not out) remained unbeaten as India reached 304/6 in 91 overs at tea after Sri Lanka were bowled out for 183 on Day One itself, thanks to an impressive six-wicket haul by off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin.

Resuming the second day’s play at 128/2 on a sunny morning, Indian overnight batsman Kohli and Dhawan found it difficult to score freely as Lankan pacers and spinners bowled in tandem. The visitors hit their first boundary only in the 13th over of the day.

However, as the first hour of play progressed, the batsmen slowly settled down and took a vital 44-run first innings lead when the first session ended.

Coming on to the field after lunch, India played on an aggressive note as skipper Kohli brought up his 10th Test century in style. But he was dismissed soon after his ton, going back to the pavilion with the score at 255/3.

India received a double blow when incoming batsman Ajinkya Rahane was out for a duck on his fifth delivery with India at 257/4.

Set batsman Dhawan and Ashwin (7) also fell soon after to give Sri Lanka something to cheer about before tea was called.

Galle: India posted 128/2 at stumps in reply to hosts Sri Lanka’s 183 in the first innings on Day One of the first Test match at the Galle International Cricket Stadium here on Wednesday.

Off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin was the inspiration behind India’s impressive performance, claiming a six-wicket haul to bowl out the hosts.

Ashwin (6/46) alongside leg-spinner Amit Mishra (2/21) flummoxed the Sri Lankan batsmen to bowl them out in just 49.4 overs in the second session of the day’s play.

In reply, Shikhar Dhawan (53) and skipper Virat Kohli (45) remained unbeaten to help the visitors reach 128/2 in 34 overs at the end of the day’s play.

Australia A defeat India A by 119 runs

Chennai: Following their comprehensive win against South Africa A in the opener, Australia A drubbed India A by 119 runs to take command and go on top of the standings in the 50-over triangular series at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium here on Friday.

Opting to bat was the perfect choice for the visitors who, based on a 239-run opening wicket partnership between captain Usman Khawaja (100) and Joe Burns (154), guided themselves to put up a formidable total of 334/4 in 50 overs. In reply, India A succumbed to the ever increasing required run rate and folded up for 215 in 42.3 overs.

Khawaja could not have asked for a better start for his side as he with Burns struck the monumental partnership which gave the Australians a brilliant platform to put on a big score on the board, which they eventually did.

While the left-handed Khawaja hammered three sixes and 10 boundaries, Burns smashed an incredible 14 sixes and five boundaries in his 131-ball innings. Both batsmen had scored half-centuries in their previous match on Wednesday against South Africa A.

Towards the end of the innings, wicketkeeper-batsman Matthew Wade also chipped in with an unbeaten 21-ball 34 which included three fours and a six.

India A did not start their chase well, losing four top order batsmen even before reaching the 100-run mark. Though the hosts maintained a run rate of five runs or more, they kept losing wickets at regular intervals which led to their downfall.

Captain and opener Unmukt Chand scored 52 before being bowled while Kedar Jadhav (50) scored a half-century.

Indian-origin Australia A pacer Gurinder Sandhu (4/28) and leg break bowler Adam Zampa (4/49) both picked up four scalps each to knock out the Indians.

Next, India A will take on South Africa A here on Sunday.

Brief scores: Australia A 334/4 in 50 overs (Joe Burns 154, Usman Khawaja 100) beat India A 215 all out (Unmukt Chand 52, Kedar Jadhav; Gurinder Sandhu 4/28, Adam Zampa 4/49).

Wasim Akram shot at in Karachi, escapes unhurt

New Delhi: Former Pakistan skipper Wasim Akram escaped unhurt on Wednesday in a bullet attack in Karsaz, Karachi.

Unidentified gunmen opened fire at his car, while he was going to the National Stadium for a bowling camp.

Confirming the incident, Wasim said that a vehicle rammed into his car from behind.

He added that some guards and the owner of the other vehicle came out and shot at me.

“The bullet hit my car’s tires but I remained safe ,” said Wasim immediately after the incident.

While speaking to to Geo News, Wasim later added: “I was not facing any particular threats. I have noted the registration number of the other vehicle and gave it to the police. The other car appeared to be government vehicle.

However, according to the Dawn, Akram’s car found itself in the middle of a traffic accident. And per the police reports, the two parties involved in the incident exchanged verbals before one of them pulled out a gun and fired a shot which hit Akram’s car tyre.

Police officials present at the scene said that the Pakistan legend was not the intended target and was extremely unlucky to have found himself in what could have been a tragic situation.

Pakistan’s World Cup winning skipper, Imran Khan, condemned the attack on Sultan of Swing.

Australia A hammer India A by 10 wickets, win series 1-0

Chennai: Australia hammered India A by 10 wickets on the fourth day of the second and final four-day cricket match to pocket the series 1-0 at the M.A. Chidambaram stadium here on Saturday.

India ended Friday’s play at 267/6 in their second innings, a lead of only 53 runs. And they needed a huge effort from their tail-enders to bail them out to a possible draw.

But on expected lines, they were bowled out for 274 as Indian origin pacer Gurinder Sandhu bagged three quick wickets and left-arm spinner Steve O’Keefe got a four-wicket haul in the innings.

As a result, Australia needed only 60 runs to win, which they did without losing any wickets. Cameron Bancroft, who scored 150 in the first innings, remained not out on 21, while captain Usman Khawaja was not out on 41.

Earlier in the day, Baba Aparajith managed to add only two runs to his overnight score of 28, while the other not out batter Shreyas Gopal failed to open his account — both were dismissed by right-armer Sandhu. Varun Aaron (1)fell to the paceman as he edged an away moving delivery to wicket-keeper Matthew Wade.

Spinner O’Keefe, who on Friday rocked the Indian top-order with wickets of Virat Kohli, skipper Cheteshwar Pujara and Shreyas Iyer, removed Shardul Thakur to end the Indian innings for 274.

A target of 60 runs was a cakewalk for the Australians as their openers raced to 62 in just 6.2 overs.

India A cricket teams announced

Chennai: The India A teams for the one-day tri-series and the two-match four-day Test series against South Africa A were announced here on Saturday.

The All-India Senior Selection Committee of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) met here to announce that young Delhi batsman Unmukt Chand will lead the team in the one-day tri-series involving Australia A and South Africa A that starts on Wednesday in Chennai.

Baroda batsman Ambati Rayudu was named skipper of the four-day Test team that will see Karnataka batter Karun Nair as the vice-captain. Railways leg-spinner Karn Sharma, who has been recovering from the left middle finger injury, will return to action for the series starting on August 18 in Wayanad, Kerala.

Ashes 2015: Finn claims five as England sniff victory

Birmignham: Comeback man Steven Finn missed a hat-trick but pulverised Australia with a five wicket haul as England were sniffing victory on an action-filled day two of the third Ashes Test at Edgbaston here on Thursday.

A win will enable England to regain their lead in the five-match series.

Australia managed to score 168 for 7 in their second innings at the draw of stumps, only 23 runs ahead of England with three full days of play remaining on a fast and bouncy track, where pacers have had a ball so far.

Peter Nevill (37) and Mitchell Starc (7) were in the middle.

Earlier in the day, replying to Australia’s first innings total of 135, England put up 281 on the scoreboard, courtesy half centuries from Joe Root (63) and Moeen Ali (59) and a 87-run eighth wicket stand between Ali and Stuart Broad (31).

After the England essay ended in the 12th over into the post lunch session, Australia needed 145 to stave off an innings defeat.

But they seemed close to ignominy, as 26 year old Middlesex pacer Finn (5 for 45) ripped through the heart of their batting in a deadly opening spell (9-1-39-4), even as opener David Warner (77) fought with grit.

The Australian batting tottered from the start, with opener and first innings resistance man Chris Rogers (6) getting struck on the front foot before the wicket by playing the wrong line against Broad.

Six feet seven inches tall Finn, returning to Test cricket after two years, then took centre-stage by plucking out Steven Smith (8) in his second over, as the Australian willower top edged a short of the length delivery.

Playing his 24th career Test, Finn did more damage in his fourth over, getting rid of skipper Michael Clarke (3), who fell to a fantastic low diving catch taken by Adam Lyth at fourth slip.

The England bowler proceeded to devour Adam Voges (0) off the next ball, to be on a hat-trick but Mitchell Marsh denied him the honours.

However, Marsh (6) did not last long, as Finn rattled the right hander’s stumps. Australia seemed in big trouble at 92 for 5.

James Anderson, who had enviable figures of 6 for 47 in the first innings, then ended Warner’s defiance, but Peter Nevill (37) and Mitchell Johnson (14) added an invaluable 42 runs for the seventh wicket in an exhibition of dour resistance that ensured England would have to bat again.

Johnson had earlier in the day took his 300th Test wicket.

Coming back into action, Finn saw the back of Johnson to complete to claim his seventh wicket of the match and 97th of his Test career.

The arch-rivals are locked 1-1 in the five-match series.

Fast-bowler Dale Steyn became the second South African to take 400 Test wickets as his efforts ensured Bangladesh were kept in check on the opening day of the second Test.

Bangladesh made decent progress despite Steyn reaching the 400-wicket milestone, dismissing opener Tamim Iqbal early to leave Bangladesh 12-1. But the Proteas turned the match by claiming five wickets for 92 runs in the last session.

Bangladesh captain Mushfiqur Rahim was the highest scorer with 65. Mominul Haque scored 40 while Shakib al Hasan and Mahmudullah contributed 35 each.

Fresh from a rain-hit drawn first Test which was largely dominated by the hosts, Bangladesh was unfazed by the early dismissal of Tamim, their most successful batsman at the moment.

Imrul Kayes and Mominul Haque shared 69-run partnership to back the side until Duminy halted the progress with a double strike, dismissing the pair in consecutive two overs.

Mominul was undone by the extra bounce as he attempted a late-cut while Kayes misjudged the length to be hit in front.

Mominul hit six fours in his 87 balls while Kayes sent the ball three times across the boundary rope.

Rahim and Mahmudullah combined for 94 runs to frustrate the South African bowlers. But the last session proved to be decisive for the visitors, whose fast bowlers found the reverse swing in the dry surface to unsettle the Bangladeshi batsmen.

BCCI refuses to revoke ban on cricketers

New Delhi: The BCCI Wednesday made it very clear that it was not having second thoughts on revoking the ban on former India pacer S Sreesanth and spinner Ankeet Chavan in the wake of a Delhi Court dropping all charges against them in the IPL 2013 spot-fixing case.

All the 36 accused persons including Sreesanth, Chavan and Ajit Chandila were discharged in the IPL-6 spot fixing case by Patiala House Court last week but the Indian board had refused to lift their ongoing ban.

The Kerala Cricket Association had made a plea to the BCCI for allowing Sreesanth to play again but Thakur said there will be no rethink on the life ban of the two cricketers.

“The earlier decision of BCCI’s disclipinary commitee ban on this case will stay on,” Thakur told reporters.

“Disciplinary proceedings are different, criminal proceedings are different. The action taken in the past were based on the disciplinary action for the indiscipline of these players, reports submmitted by the the anti-corruption unit. So the same decision of ban will continue on these players,” he added.

All the three accused cricketers had to spend time in jail during the course of investigation. Of the three, Sreesanth and Chavan are currently serving life bans imposed by the BCCI after the scandal shook the high-profile league, while Chandila’s hearing is still on.

Delhi court dismisses allegations against Sreesanth, two others

New Delhi: A Delhi court on Saturday discharged three accused cricketers, including S. Sreesanth, Ajit Chandila and Ankeet Chavan.
All the 36 accused persons including former India capped cricketer S Sreesanth were discharged in the IPL-6 spot fixing case by a Delhi court.

Other two prominent IPL players -Ajit Chandila and Ankeet Chavan who were on bail were also discharged in the case in which six persons including underworld don Dawood Ibrahim and his aide Chhota Shakeel were declared proclaimed offenders.

All are discharged (from the case), Additional Sessions Judge Neena Bansal Krishna said while pronouncing the order. The case was today put for order on framing of charges against the 36 accused persons who were on bail.

Sreesanth, 32, broke down on hearing the order while the other accused including the players present in the courtroom started hugging each other.

Sreesanth said “at last justice has been done to him, adding, God willing, I will be able to return to cricket. I have no regrets, no complaints.

The court had on May 23 reserved for today the order on framing of charges in the case. Special Cell of Delhi Police had named 42 accused in the case in its charge sheet out of whom six are absconding.

Police had told the court that properties of Dawood and Shakeel in Mumbai have already been attached in connection with the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case and that they have not visited India since 1993.

Police had informed the court that Dawood had properties in his name at Dongri in Mumbai whereas Shakeel owned properties in Nagpada there.

The court had earlier issued non-bailable warrants against Dawood and Shakeel, Pakistan-based Javed Chutani, Salman alias Master and Ehteysham, who all are considered to be Dawood’s associates.

The police had filed a 6,000-page charge sheet against various accused in the case. It had also filed supplementary charge sheet later on. The court had granted bail to Sreesanth, Chavan and other accused for lack of evidence against them under the provisions of stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA).

Other accused, including Chandila, were also granted bail later on by the court. The police, in its charge sheet, had claimed that Dawood and Shakeel, who have been controlling the fixing and betting market in cricket in India, were behind IPL spot-fixing.
