Genre: Action & Drama
Verdict: Good
Plot: The plotted scenario of Dagdi Chawl starts off in an era of 1996 and revolves around a person called Surya (Ankush Chaudhari), who leads a peaceful life in one of the chawls of Mumbai. He owns his own work setup and is almost on the verge of settling down in life by marrying his beloved (Pooja Sawant). In that particular era of 1996 underworld activities were still to be seen live on the streets of Mumbai. In this milieu one such incident happens with Surya, which lands him in a situation where he has to come face to face with ‘Daddy’ aka Arun Gawli (Makrand Deshpande) and Surya’s journey in the underworld also starts off, so does his struggle to disassociate himself with the tag of Daagdi Chawl, which lands him further deep into the activities of Daagdi Chawl. Besides he is also pitied against Daddy.
Aces: Hats off to director Chandrakant Kanse for tackling such a complex issue of the mafia and its constant and ruthless gang wars and for this the credit should also go to the art director who recreated a perfect ambience of the bygone era of Dagdi Chawl. That apart Ankush Chaudhari is outstanding as Surya as he has literally got into the skin of the character.
Minuses: Some of the scenes are outright repetitive which may not go down well with the audience.
Last Word: A film like Dagdi Chawl is an eye opener once again for one and all that no matter what, crime never pays, but if at all one gets caught in its web unwillingly than there is always a way out if one wills it.
