Some in Mumbai Police work in tandem with Dawood: Chhota Rajan

Bali: Underworld don Chhota Rajan Tuesday alleged that “some members” in the Mumbai Police have links with wanted terrorist Dawood Ibrahim and said he will keep on fighting against him.

“Some members of the Mumbai Police are working in tandem with Dawood. I will keep on fighting against terrorism and Dawood. I am not scared of Dawood,” said Rajan, a close confidante-turned-rival of Dawood, the prime accused in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case.

Rajan, who was arrested in this popular tourist town on his arrival from Australia on October 25, is expected to be produced before a court soon where the Indonesian police will submit details of the cases for which he is wanted in India.

He is likely to be deported to India soon. “The entire process is likely to be completed in next two-three days,” an Indian official had said yesterday.

“The government can keep me anywhere – Delhi or Mumbai. But there should be no injustice done to me. All cases against me are false,” Rajan, who is wanted in over 75 heinous crimes ranging from murder, extortion to smuggling and drug trafficking, told reporters when asked whether he was afraid of returning to Mumbai.

“Mumbai police has been unjust to me. Delhi government taking note of that should do justice to me,” he said.

An Indian team has been working with its Indonesian counterparts to take over Rajan’s custody.

The Indian team, comprising officers from CBI, Mumbai and Delhi police, arrived here on Sunday and they came along with a detailed dossier on 55-year-old Rajan and his involvement in various crimes in India.

The team for the first time questioned him yesterday in the presence of Indonesian police at the detention centre where he has been lodged for the last 10 days.

Bali: Underworld don Chhota Rajan today said he was not scared of threats to his life from rival gangs, including from Dawood Ibrahim, even as the Indonesia Police has provided him with special commando protection.

“I am not scared,” he said when reporters asked him if he was scared of threats to his life from rival gangs, including one headed by Dawood.

Arrested on arrival from Australia on Sunday, Rajan made the comments while being whisked away by police.

Bali Police spokesman Hery Wiyanto said they were aware of the threats faced by Rajan and he has been placed with special commandos for protection.

“We have all the measures in place to ensure that the prisoner’s security is not compromised. Since he is a foreigner, we have heightened security for him,” he told reporters.

Wiyanto said 55-year-old Rajan, whose original name is Rajendra Sadashiv Nikhalje, seems to be doing fine and there is no particular behavioural problem with him. “If he is under pressure, he is not showing,” he said.

Bali Police Commissioner Reinhard Nainggolan said Rajan, once close confidant-turned-rival of underworld ganglord Dawood, repeatedly pleaded before the interrogators to free him as he wanted to go to Zimbabwe.

Nainggolan said the mafia don was medically fit, thus contradicting reports of him suffering from multiple ailments.

Asked when he would be deported to India, where he is one of the most wanted criminals, Wiyanto said the Bali Police was waiting for a team of officials from India to interrogate Rajan first.

“We are waiting (for the Indian team). We will coordinate with the Indian authorities to formulate on how to deport Chhota Rajan back to India,” he said.

Bali Police commissioner Nainggolan said arrest of Rajan was a serious law enforcement operation under the supervision of the Interpol.

Giving details about the circumstances leading to Rajan’s arrest, he said they had information from the Indonesia Interpol that someone with the name Mohan Kumar has to be arrested based on the passport number.

“(When we got him) We told him not to worry if he cooperates with us. We told him about the Red Corner Notice. We told him that your photo provided is the same. He wanted my help to set him free,” he said.

Asked whether Rajan was accompanied by someone else also, Nainggolan said Rajan came to Bali alone and the arrest was made in Bali as the Interpol was informed by Australia that they cannot arrest someone only on the basis of Red Corner Notice.

Asked whether it was suspicious for the Indonesian authorities to find Rajan alone as police, rival gangs and mafias were looking for him, he said “of course it is very suspicious”.

“When we caught him, he looked scared…He is smoking constantly,” Nainggolan said.
Wiyanto said Rajan’s interrogation in Bali would be confined only to questioning on fake identity charges.

“Enquiry will be confined to ascertain whether the identity is true or not and to ensure that we did not arrest the wrong person,” he said.

Chhota Rajan, one of India’s most wanted gangster, was arrested in Bali, Indonesia, on a Red Corner Notice issued by Interpol after eluding law enforcement agencies for over two decades.

The arrest was made on a tip off from Australian police that Rajan, the powerful aide-turned-rival of terrorist Dawood Ibrahim, has flown from Sydney to Bali.

India has proof of Dawood Ibrahim living in Pakistan: Report

New Delhi: The Indian Intelligence Agencies have found proof that India’s most wanted terrorist, Dawood Ibrahim is still residing in Pakistan.

The media reports that Intelligence agencies have found a telephone bill registered in the name of Mehjabeen Shaikh, wife of Dawood and that the family has been residing in Karachi’s Clifton Road. The Pakistan government however has been repeatedly rejecting reports that Dawood is taking shelter in the country. A recent picture of the 59-year-old terrorist too has been published.

The issue will be raised during the NSA talks, which are scheduled to be held on Sunday as to determine Pakistan’s role in sheltering a terrorist wanted by India in connection with the 1993 Mumbai blasts that killed 257 people.

A red corner notice has been issued against Dawood.

“Indian government has sent a wrong message by hanging an innocent man”: Chhota Shakeel

New Delhi: Soon after Yakub Memon was hanged for his role in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts, Chhota Shakeel, who is also an accused in the case and is known to be a close aide of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim, reportedly warned of consequences of executing Yakub.

A report carried by Times of India (ToI) claims that Shakeel called up the newspaper’s office and said that Yakub’s hanging was a ‘legal murder’ and that the Indian government had betrayed him by punishing him for his brother Tiger Memon’s act.

Shakeel also reportedly said that by hanging Yakub, all possibilities of him and Dawood Ibrahim returning to India in exchange of promises of leniency have been ruled out. “Dawood bhai would have been meted the same fate if he would have come at that time… it is clear now,” the report quotes Shakeel.

He also alleged that the Indian government had sent a wrong message by hanging an ‘innocent’ man for his brother’s act. “It is a legal murder,” he said, adding, “There will be consequences.”

Shakeel also said that nobody would believe the Indian government or its agencies in future.

Shakeel also claimed that Yakub was in disagreement with his brother Tiger, the main accused, and had decided to follow the law. “Somebody trusted a government but the government breached the trust… Who will come back to get killed?”

He also claimed that Yakub had no links with Dawood Ibrahim. “He (Yakub) was accused of association with Dawood bhai. That’s not true,” Shakeel told ToI.

He also rubbished special prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam’s purported statement that Yakub’s hanging was a ‘message’ to terrorists. “You are hanging innocents to convey a message to us,” Shakeel said.

Met Dawood Ibrahim in London, he wanted to return to India: Ram Jethmalani

New Delhi: Senior advocate Ram Jethmalani on Saturday claimed to have met Dawood Ibrahim in London, where the underworld don had told him that he was willing to return to India.

Speaking to news agency ANI, Jethmalani rejected a newspaper report, which claimed that he had met Dawood’s close associate Chhota Shakeel in London.

The senior Supreme Court lawyer maintained that Dawood had offered to surrender to Indian authorities, but the then Maharashtra chief minister Sharad Pawar had rejected the offer.

However, Jethmalani said that saying no to Dawood’s proposal wasn’t only Pawar’s decision, but the UPA government was also a part of it.

While recalling his encounter with the underworld don, Jethamalani said that Dawood was ready to return to India and be placed under house arrest during the trial, as he feared he would be bumped off in jail.

Jethamalani further said that Dawood told him that he was not involved in 1993 Mumbai serial blasts and wanted a guarantee from Indian authorities for his return that he will not be subjected to third-degree torture by the police during his detention.

The senior lawyer’s claim comes after Dawood’s trusted aide Chhota Shakeel in an interview to The Times of India, said that the underworld don had wished to return to India after the Mumbai blasts and had even spoken to Jethmalani in London, but the Indian government refused.

The newspaper reported that Shakeel had met Jethmalani in London and put forward Dawood’s proposal for the Indian authorities.

'Modi govt unaware of Dawood Ibrahim's whereabouts'

New Delhi: The central government is unaware of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim’s whereabouts, the Home Ministry has stated.

Ever since Narendra Modi became the prime minister, reports have been emerging that the BJP government at the Centre is trying its level best to locate Dawood and bring him to justice.

Dawood Ibrahim is an underworld don who is also the mastermind of the 1993 Mumbai blasts. On March 12, 1993, serial bomb blasts rocked the western metropolis at various places, killing more than 250 and injuring over 700.

Last year a media report had said that the underworld don had changed his location and shifted his base to the Af-Pak border.

The report stated that Dawood was apprehensive of Modis intention and feared a commando style operation, similar to the US raid in Abbottabad, which killed al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden. Fearing this, the underworld don had changed his base and asked Pakistans ISI to enhance his security.

D-company is a reference to Dawood Ibrahim. D Company is involved in a variety of criminal activities, including narcotics trafficking, extortion, smuggling, and contract killings.

Dawood Ibrahim and other leaders of D Company are the subjects of Interpol Red Notices for their suspected involvement in the 1993 terrorist bombings in Mumbai, India in which 257 people were killed.

In October 2003, the US Treasury Department named Dawood Ibrahim as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist, and in June 2006, the United States named both Dawood Ibrahim and D Company as Significant Foreign Narcotics Traffickers pursuant to the Kingpin Act.

Additionally, in May 2012, Treasury designated two senior D Company lieutenants, Chhota Shakeel and Ibrahim ‘Tiger’ Memon, under the Kingpin Act.

Dawood Ibrahim wanted to surrender: former Delhi Police chief

New Delhi: Former Delhi police commissioner Neeraj Kumar has claimed that underworld don Dawood Ibrahim, the mastermind of the 1993 serial blasts in Mumbai that claimed around 300 lives, wanted to surrender but the CBI did not agree to it.

Neeraj Kumar also claimed to have spoken to Dawood Ibrahim three times in June 1994.

“I spoke to a jittery Dawood three times in June 1994… He seemed to be toying with the idea of surrendering but had one worry – his rival gangs could finish him off if he returned to India. I told him his safety would be the responsibility of the CBI,” Neeraj Kumar has told Hindustan Times.

“Dawood was worried that his rivals may kill him if he would come back. I played along and told him that the CBI would take care of his safety if he were to return but before we could actually talk terms of surrender, my bosses in the CBI told me to back off,” Neeraj Kumar says in the HT interview.

In June 1994, Neeraj Kumar was with the CBI and he was leading the agency’s probe into 1993 Mumbai blasts.

Reacting to Neeraj Kumar’s claims, former CBI director Vijay Rama Rao said, “No such offer of surrender came from Dawood Ibrahim. If it’s the case, it was not brought to my knowledge.”

“Let all facts come out. Without entire facts be known, it would be premature and incorrect to say anything,” BJP leader Nalin Kohli said.

Last December, the Modi government, in bilateral talks with Pakistan, had sought custody of Dawood Dawood Ibrahim.

Intelligence sources also said that Dawood is a special guest staying in Pakistan’s much guarded defence area and so much is the secrecy that Pakistan sees that Dawood and his kin fly to Saudi Arabia for pilgrimage in charter flights.
