Movie Review: ‘Daddy’s Home’ is a delightfully heartwarming family fare

January 9, 2016 by Shaheen Raaj

Daddys-Home

Producers: Will Ferrell, Adam McKay, Chris Henchy & John Morris
Director: Sean Anders
Star Cast: Will Ferrell, Mark Wahlberg, Linda Cardellini, Scarlett Estevez,Owen Vaccaro et al.
Genre: Comedy
Verdict: Good

Director Sean Anders earlier 3 outings are That’s My Boy, We Are The Millers & Sex Drive, all comic capers. His 4th outing Daddy’s Home too, tackles a serious issue comically in a light hearted manner.

Plot; Brad Taggart (Will Ferrell) is a kind hearted radio executive who wants to be the best possible stepfather to his wife Sarah Mayron’s (Linda Cardellini) 2 children Megan Mayron & Dylan Mayron (Scarlett Estevez & Owen Vaccaro). When her freewheeling ex – husband Dusty (Mark Wahlberg) breezes back into town, Brad’s feeling of insecurity quickly develops into an inferiority complex. As Dusty demonstrates his flair for athletics, home repair & bad – boy charisma, Taggart finds himself in a no – holds – barred battle to one – up his rival and win the approval of his family.

Aces: The par excellence performance and the well orchestrated chemistry of stalwarts like Will Farrell & Mark Wahlberg, the composed act of Linda Cardellini and the two adorable kids (Scarlett Estevez & Owen Vaccaro).

Minuses: Daddy’s home is too predictable besides the gags sometimes seem too forced to be truly enjoyable.

Last Word: All said & done Daddy’s Home is a good entertaining wintery weekend for the whole family.

Movie Review: All said & done Pointbreak is slightly disappointing

January 1, 2016 by Shaheen Raaj

pointbreak

Producers: John Baldechi, Broderick Johnson, Cristopher Taylor, David Valdes, Kurt Wimmer & Andrew A. Kosove
Director: Ericson Core
Star Cast: Luke Bracey, Edgar Ramirez, Judah Lewis, Teresa Palmer, Ray Winstone, Nikolai Kinski, Tobias Santlemann, Bojesse Christophe, Delroy Lindo et al
Genre: Action Thriller
Verdict: AVERAGE

The current release Pointbreak in 3D is the remake of Kathryn Bigelow’s 1991 film of the same name starring Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swazye. Cinematographer turned Director Ericson Core has made a good adventure thriller in Pointbreak. Yet the cinematographer Ericson Core overrides the director Ericson core.

Plot: An undercover cop makes his way into a scene of bank – robbing extreme – sports athletes. Johnny Utah ‘the Osaki 8’ is named after Ono Osaki, an eco – warrior who challenged the extreme sports world to a series of eight ordeals that honours the forces of nature. The challenge is to create a perfect line when completing the trials. Although Johnny Utah claims it is a path to enlightenment, Bodhi says that Ono Osaki was more interested in balance than enlightenment and he and the others in his group appear to want to use the teaching for liberating rather than material gain, even though it involves criminal activity.

Aces: The outstanding performances of Luke Bracey and Edgar Ramirez, the mind blowing action sequences and above all the brilliant cinematography of Ericson Core.

Minuses: Sadly enough this Pointbreak is no match or not even a patch on the original Pointbreak. Maybe director Ericson Core intended to create some kind of ultra mega action movie but ends up failing to live up to the audiences expectations.

Last Word: Pointbreak lacks the punch and it all ends up as a gimmick to showcase a Cola Commercial. Period!

Movie Review: ‘Monster Hunt’ is one of the most endearing and superb movie

January 1, 2016 by Shaheen Raaj

Monster-Hunt

Producer: Bill Kong, Doris Tse & Yee Chung – Man
Director: Raman Hui
Star Cast: Bai Baihe, Elaine Jin, Jing Boran, Jiang Wu, Eric Sang
Genre: Adventure
Verdict: VERY GOOD

Raman Hui the animator of lovable movies like Shrek, antz and Madagascar fame now makes his feature debut with Monster Hunt, a $40 million live – action / animation hybrid fantasy movie.

Plot: Humans have been at war against monsters for generations, but after the birth of Woba, the last of the monster kings, an effort to bring the two races together begins in right earnest. So when a monster queen gives birth to a cute prince, the child faces an immediate threat from other fantastic creatures and the humans beings too, who hunt them.

Aces: In his debut movie Monster Hunt director Raman Hui has come up with a very endearing fare for people of all ages and from every walks of life. Besides its technical finesse, the movie Monster Hunt also has some smart performances from Chinese actors like Baihe, Elaine Jin, Jing Boran, Jiang Wu, Eric Sang etc.

Minuses: The war oriented plot between monsters of all shapes and sizes and human beings seems highly indigestible. At one point of time the human beings seems more interested in fine dining topped with the choicest wines and then at another point of time they are more interested in a fight to finish warfare with the monsters.

Last Word: Monster Hunt has regaled the Chinese people in a big way and now it is ready to regale the global audiences. So all in all Monster Hunt is certainly a not to be missed fare especially for the children as well as the teenagers. Period!

Movie Review: ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ still has the force to keep the audiences spellbindingly hooked

December 26, 2015 by Shaheen Raaj

STAR WARS THE FORCE AWAKENS

Producers: Bryan Burk, Katheleen Kennedy & J. J. Abrams
Director: J. J. Abrams
Star Cast: Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupito Nyongo’s, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew & Max Van Sydow
Genre: Adventure
Verdict: Good

Director J. J. Abrams, of Star Trek and Mission Impossible fame, has now come on board to direct the latest offering of Star Wars franchise namely Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Which in fact also happens to be the 1st film in the Star Wars sequel trilogy.

Plot: Almost three decades have elapsed since the destruction of the 2nd Death Star, Luke Skywalkar, the last Jedi, has disappeared. The 1st one has risen from the remains of the fallen Galactic Empire and seeks to eliminate Luke and the Republic. The Resistance, backed by the Republic and led by Luke’s sister, Leia Organa, opposes them while searching for Luke to enlist his aid.

Aces: Star: Wars: The force Awakens is the 7th sequel in the Star Wars franchise. In this sequel, the saga of Luke Skywalker continues and takes the viewers down the nostalgic lane at least for those who have stayed connected with Star Wars since the 1st galactic Star War was unleashed. While the principal actors performance has been consistent, the new ones leave a lot to be desired. Director J. J. Abrams too, lives up to the viewers highly hyped expectations.

Minuses: The million dollar question here is that what more new things can this franchise bring as it has tried and tested every available gimmicks of the galactic forces. The main weakness is that Star Wars: The Force Awakens seems more of a rehashed version of the earlier Star Wars saga. But the best part is that it never drags completely nor does it moves too quickly, thereby keeping the audiences interest sustained.

Last Word: Star Wars: The Force Awakens still has the force to keep the audiences spellbinding and hooked, so much so that it arouses the curiosity level of the new generation too. All in all a good X’MAS gift to spend your weekend with your family.

PIXAR MAY SUFFER 1ST LOSS AT BOX OFFICE

The Good Dinosaur is shaping up to be a novelty. After 16 films, including such classics as Toy Story & Wall – E, the story of a young Apatosaurus’ quest to reunite with his family is shaping up to be Pixar’s 1st box office failure. With a production budget of $200 million and roughly $150 million spent on marketing, industry analysts & executives say that Pixar and its parent company Disney must make $500 million to break even theatrically. Currently, the film has made $131.3 million globally and is showing signs of fading fast. At this point, many project that The Good Dinosaur will be lucky to crack the $400 million mark. 2 MULTIPLEXES TO BOW IN 2016

1 key challenge facing Moroccan cinema is screen shortage, 31 theaters for a population of 30 million, and the continuing loss of spectators in the older picture palaces, which continue to serve as important venues for Moroccan films. The country has only 2 multiplexes: a 14 screener in Casablanca and a 9 plex in Marrakech, both run by the French – Moroccan group Megarama. Extraordinary but true: These 2 multiplexes generate 2 3rd’s of all box office revenues. Megarama also runs a duplex in Fez. The situation will be partially relieved in 2016 with the opening of 2 new multiplexes by Megarama, which were initially scheduled for 2014, but have been successively postponed due to planning permission issues for the host shopping malls. In Feb, 2016 Megarama hopes to open an 11 screen complex, with 1,400 seats, in Rabat, Morocco’s capital, followed by an 8 screen venue, with 1,000 seats, in the international port city of Tangiers.

The 76 year old helmer also gave an insight into key moments in his career, his views on the future of the film industry and his general take on the complex international crisis resulting from recent terrorist attacks around the world. Coppola explained that his interest in live cinema came from the discussion a few years back that 3D was the “future of cinema.”

NABIL PREPS SOCIAL DRAMA RAZZIA

46 year old Nabil Ayouch is Morocco’s best known helmer, due to his incisive social dramas that highlight the plight of characters from impoverished backgrounds who resort to desperate actions. His 2012 pic, Horses Of God, about the 2003 Casablanca suicide bombers, was sold to 40 countries and officially presented in US by Jonathan Demme, where it was Morocco’s candidate for the Foreign Language Academy Award & Golden Globes. Given the rising tide of terrorist attacks throughout the world, attributed in part to under privileged environments, Ayouch’s Horses Of God is increasingly cited as a poignant insight into the underlying causes of terrorism. “Horses Of God was a premonition of what happened in Paris, not just the situation in Morocco,” said Ayouch. For his most recent film, Much Loved, Ayouch decided to switch his gaze to a more subtle form of violence provoked by poverty.

This year’s ceremony follows on the heels of the 2013 tribute to Scandinavian Cinema and last year’s tribute to Japanese Cinema. Sarim Fassi Fihri, prexy of the Moroccan Cinema Center (CCM) presided the ceremony and highlighted the fact that both Morocco & Canada are bi – lingual countries “that beat with a single heart” He praised the achievements of his sister institution in Canada, the National Film Office, and referred to the multiple achievements of Canadian cinema in the international film panorama, pioneered by leading directors, from established helmers such as David Cronenberg & Denys Arcand to the generation of new talent such as Xavier Dolan who screened his 1st feature, I Killed My Mother, aged 20, in Directors’ Fortnight at Cannes, and then shared Cannes’ Grand Jury Prize in 2014 for Mommy.

Julian’s main concern is finding a new family for Truman, his ageing boxer friend. Directed by an audience friendly auteur & produced by Marta Esteban at Imposible Films & Diego Dubcovsky at Argentina’s BD Cine, Truman is a comedy of melancholy, wise, wistful & well-observed,” said reviewer Joe Leydon. An emotionally raw, even harsh dramedy, balancing dark twists and the excesses of the soul, Truman is performing well in Spain where it cumed $2.7 million, ranking No. 8 in its 5th week at theaters.

She is considered a purveyor of lyrical minimalism. Martel, who is Latin America’s most prominent woman director, is currently in post on period piece Zama, about an officer of Spanish Crown operating in Argentina’s wild backwaters towards the end of the 18th century on the eve of the country’s independence movements. PALESTINIAN GAY FILM FESTIVAL BREAkS BARRIERS

It was an LGBT themed film festival held outside the borders of Palestine, featuring a number of works by directors who were neither gay nor Palestinian. But the 1st ever Kooz Queer festival which had a modest bow earlier this month in the northern Israeli city of Haifa, made little ripples of history in its own right. The tiny 3 day festival, established by grassroots org Aswat – Palestinian Gay Women and held across a handful of Haifa coffee shops & art venues, opened up a dialogue about the overlaps of occupation & sexuality; and of the borders of individual identity in the context of an uncertain international existence. The goal of the festival was to provide platform for home grown, gay themed films at a time when most LGBT Palestinians still feel a need to stay closeted.

Movie Review: ‘In The Heart Of The Sea’ is an absolutely boring fare

December 5, 2015 by Shaheen Raaj

In-the-Heart-of-the-Sea

Producer: Brian Grazer, Ron Howard, Will Ward, Joe Roth & Paula Weinstein
Director: Ron Howard
Star Cast: Chris Hemsworth, Benjamin Walker, Cilian Murphy, Tom, Holland,& Ben Gleeson
Genre: Adventure
Verdict: POOR

Plot: In 1820, the whaling ship Essex is crewed by Captain George Pollard Jr 1st officer, Owen Chase 2nd officer Matthew Joy, and cabin boy Thomas Nickerson. During their voyage, the ship is sunk when it is rammed & split in half by a very large & enraged bull sperm whale, ultimately leaving its crew shipwrecked at sea for 90 days and more than a thousand miles away from the land. After the attack, the crew sails for South America and is forced to resort to Cannibalism.

Aces: It’s the directorial treatment of Ron Howard and the performances of the principal actors that saves the day and makes the movie watchable to some extent.

Minuses: The loose screenplay & some of the repetitive scenes when the ship is at sea and especially when it is sinking. And also the editing could have been crisper.

Last Word: There is nothing new that we have not seen before but of course the lovers of adventure may get hooked by its grandeur.

Movie Review: ‘Spectre’ is strictly recommended only for the diehard James Bond fans

November 30, 2015 by Shaheen Raaj

Spectre

Banner: Eon Production
Producer: Michael G. Wilson & Barbara Broccoli
Director: Sam Mendes
Star Cast: Daniel Craig, Christoph Waltz, Léa Seydoux, Ben Whishaw, Naomie Harris, Dave Bautista, Monica Bellucci, Ralph Fiennes et al
Music: Thomas Newman

Director Sam Mendes has carried forward the legacy of the James Bond franchise in Spectre, the 24th instalment. To say that it is one of the costliest film ever made in this series would be an understatement. As usual it features Daniel Craig as the suave, gun totting, gentleman James Bond. And the additional inclusion is of actors like Christopher Waltz, Lea Seydoux, Monica Bellucci, Dave Bautista & Andrew Scott. But sadly speaking this 24th instalment comes up as one of the biggest disappointing fare.

The plotted scenario of Spectre starts off with a cryptic message from the past that sends Bond (Daniel Craig) on a rogue mission to Mexico City, where he meets Lucia (Monica Bellucci), the beautiful & the forbidden widow of an infamous criminal. Bond infiltrates a secret meeting & uncovers the existence of the sinister organization known as SPECTRE. Meanwhile back in London, Max Denbigh (Andrew Scott), the new head of the Centre of National Security, questions Bond’s actions and challenges the relevance of MI6 led by M (Ralph Fiennes). Bond covertly enlists Moneypenny (Naomie Harris) & Q (Ben Whishaw) to help him seek out Madeleine Swann (Léa Seydoux), the daughter of his old nemesis Mr White (Jesper Christensen), who may hold the clue to untangling the web of SPECTRE. As the daughter of the assassin, she understands Bond in a way most others cannot. As Bond ventures towards the heart of Spectre, he learns a chilling connection between himself and the enemy he seeks.
Director Sam Mendes in this particular, the 24th instalment of James Bond namely Spectre, seems to have missed the true spirit of the 007 Bond man. No doubt the film has been lavishly mounted but it is still devoid of the soul of the earlier James Bond films.

Performance wise Daniel Craig as the main protagonist focuses more on the interpersonal relationship that his character has developed over the years. No doubt he has enacted his role with finesse but the presentation of his character leaves a lot to be desired. While Christopher Walts as Bond’s arch nemesis Blofeld is not up to the mark. And Lea Seydoux springs a surprise with her sincere act. That apart Andrew Scott is perfect in his character of C. Besides all applause is also due to Dave Bautista for his brilliance oriented action role which also proves to be the one & the only highlight of the film.

Tail Piece: Spectre is strictly recommended only for the diehard James Bond Franchise fans. But of course Spectre is worth a watch, for one & all, at least once. Period!

Movie Review: ‘The Last Witch Hunter’ is a hardly convincing movie

October 27, 2015 by Shaheen Raaj

THE LAST WITCH HUNTER

Producer: Mark Canton & Bernie Goodman
Director: Breck Eisner
Star Cast: Vin Diesel, Rosie Leslie, Elijah Wood, Isreal Baldecanas & Micheal Caine
Genre: Fantasy
Verdict: Poor

Plot: The modern world holds many secrets, but the most astounding secret of all is that witches still live amongst us; vicious supernatural creatures intent on unleashing the Black Death upon the world. Armies of witch hunters battled the unnatural enemy across the globe for centuries, including Kaulder, a valiant warrior who managed to slay the all – powerful Queen Witch, decimating her followers in the process. In the moments right before her death, the Queen curses Kaulder with her own immortality, forever separating him from his beloved wife and daughter in the afterlife. Today Kaulder is the only one of his kind remaining, and has spent centuries hunting down rogue witches, all the while yearning for his long – lost loved ones. However, unbeknownst to Kaulder, the Queen Witch is resurrected and seeks revenge on her killer causing an epic battle that will determine the survival of the human race.

Aces: Two gigantic actors like Vin Diesel & Micheal Caine deliver an astoundingly par excellence performance but that’s all there is to a dumbest movie The Last Witch Hunter.

Minuses: The hardly convincing storyline topped with the hardly convincing direction of Breck Eisner.

Last Word: Even the fantasy and horror lover fans are advised to stay miles away from the so called movie The Last Witch Hunter.

Movie Review: ‘Rock The Kasbah’ is an interesting, entertaining & enjoyable movie

October 26, 2015 by Shaheen Raaj

ROCK THE KASBAH

Producers: Steve Bing, Bill Block & Jacob Pechenik
Director: Barry Levinson
Star Cast: Bill Murray, Kate Hudson, Zooey Deschanel, Danny McBride, Scott Caan, Leem Lubany, Kelly Lynch, Arian Moayed, Taylor Kinny, Beejan Land & Bruce Willis
Genre: Comedy
Verdict: GOOD

Plot: Rock The Kasbah is the story of Richie Vance, a has-been rock manager who takes his last remaining client on a USO tour of Afghanistan. When Richie finds himself in Kabul, abandoned, penniless and without his passport, he discovers a young girl with an extraordinary voice and manages her through Afghanistan’s version of “American Idol” the wildly popular “Afghan Star.”

Aces: The mesmerizing performance of Zooey Deschanel in the main role of an aspiring singer and an equally catchy cameo act of Beejan Land as the host of the show Afghan Star.

Minuses: The lacklustre direction of Barry Levinson and its slow space. The editing part of it could have been crisper. And pray what was Bill Murray & Bruce Willis, both spent force, doing in the whole scheme of things or were they just taken on board as ex – veteran actors.

Last Word: A really interesting film made on the myth & the truth of a reality show. If only director Barry Levinson had paid more attention to the scattered script of Rock The Kasbah, it would have enlivened the proceedings.
