Kozhikode: A documentary film ‘Then They Came for Me’ directed by rights activist and documentary film-maker Gopal Menon and produced by the Solidarity Youth Movement, the youth wing of the Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, Kerala was premiered in the city recently.

The film based on the cases and lives of people who had been arrested from Kerala under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) was formally released by noted civil rights activist Teesta Setalvad at a formal function organized by the producers.

Prominent Malayalam critic, KEN Kunjahammed received the copy of the film. Speaking on the occasion, Ms Setalvad said she was targeted and harassed for talking for the unprivileged and voiceless.

“BJP-led Gujarat government charged six cases against me including five criminal cases. Even anticipatory bail is being denied,” she said.

She said that BJP govt is using UAPA to suppress the voice of the voiceless. Though governments are changing, such draconian laws are not dropped. The laws are tried against the dalits, backward classes, farmers and minorities of the country who stand against the government.

“This is obviously transgression over the freedom of citizens,” she said expressing lamentation over the silence of media over this issue. But, until the people refuse to remain silent, human right struggles will continue, she said.

Presiding over the meeting State president of the movement T. Mohammed Velom said that the film was also a resistance against the ongoing moves from the government to torture and silence the young and reacting minds in the pretext of crackdown on Maoists.

The film throws light on the ‘shocking’ incidents of misuse of acts such as UAPA against innocent members of marginalised sections, including Dalits and Muslims to silence and stop them from protesting against the injustices, he said. GP Ramachandran, Gopal Menon, CM Sherif and others also spoke.

Muzaffarnagar: Falah-e-Aam housing colony for riot victims inaugurated

New Delhi: Jamaat-e-Islami Hind has donated 88 new homes to as many families whose homes were looted and torched during the Sep 2013 Muzaffarnagar riot and they had since been living in community-run make-shift relief camps. More than one hundred people were killed and thousands were rendered homeless during the riot.

At a ceremony at Parsoli area of Muzaffarnagar district of Uttar Pradesh recently, Maulana Syed Jalaluddin Umari, the National President of JIH, inaugurated the newly constructed Falah-e-Aam Colony and handed over keys of new homes to the riot victim families.

JIH had bought eight bighas of land and constructed 88 houses on it. Each house has cost Jamaat Rs 2.4 lakh. The colony also has a Masjid, a community centre and a primary school.

“We are happy to get a home here, we are thankful to Jamaat,” said Tabassum, one of the beneficiaries standing outside her flat in the Falah-e Aam Colony. Tabassum, a native of Hasanpur village in Muzaffarnagar, has her husband and three young daughters.

Mohammad Qasim is another beneficiary. Originally from Lisarh village, he has also got a flat in JIH’s colony. “For the last two years since after the riot, we had been living in a make-shift relief camp. We had hoped that we will get a home from the government. We have got one from Jamaat. We have forgot our own home which was looted and torched by rioters,” said Qasim standing along with his family inside the Flat No. 3.

Addressing the program, Maulana Umari said: “Whenever a natural or man-made calamity has hit any area of the country, JIH has rushed to help the victims irrespective of their region or religion. We do it on humanitarian ground.”

He also said that JIH has constructed such colonies for riot victims in Gujarat and Assam also.

On the occasion, JIH also felicitated some Hindus who saved several Muslims during the Muzaffarnagar riot.

Besides him, many central leaders of the JIH, including Mohammad Ahmed, Shafi Madani and Maulana Rafeeq Qasmi and Maulana Mohammad Yusuf Islahi were also present on the occasion.

Western UP zone leaders of the Jamaat including Maulana Inamullah Islahi, zonal president and Mohammad Alauddin, relief in-charge of the zone were present at the event.

Eminent dignitaries from the area including Asad Ghalib, Chairman, Sardhana Nagarpalika and Rashid Ali, Chairman, Kerana Nagarpalika attended the program. They appreciated JIH’s initiative.

As many as 40 new houses, a Masjid, a primary school, a maktab and community hall will also be constructed soon by the JIH in the riot hit area.

Muslim bodies condemn Markandey Katju’s remarks on Muslim Personal Law

New Delhi: The country’s largest Muslim socio-religious organization, Jamaat-e-Islami Hind (JIH) has condemned Press Council of India chief Markandey Katju’s statement on Sharia Law, which he termed as barbaric and degrading for women in his recent blog post.

Eliciting his views on Muslim Personal Law, Mr. Katju had written that, “at least 60% Muslims oppose the Muslim Personal Law (Shariat). About 50% Muslims are women. Almost all of them are opposed to shariat.” He advocated for a Uniform Civil Code in the country.

JIH said Mr. Katju’s statement is unjustified, improper and emotive and asked him as to how Uniform Civil Code could be just for a multi-religion and multi-culture country like India of over one billion people.

Opining that most Muslims oppose the Sharia law, Mr. Katju asked “can any just, modern minded and fair person support such a barbaric law which prescribes stoning to death ( as was done recently in Somalia ) for adultery, or cutting off a thief’s limbs ? I refuse to believe that there are no just, modern minded and fair males in the Muslim community ( even if they be in the minority ).”

In a media statement on Thursday, Mr. Nusrat Ali, Secretary General of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, said that some statements of former Supreme Court judge Katju are “indeed useful, reasonable and moderate.” But it seems that “from his days in judiciary, he has held one-sided, illogical and unjustified viewpoint about Muslim Personal Law.”

“He has once again expressed this view and thus has not only hurt the sentiments of the Muslim community and millions of other fellow countrymen but also raked up an impracticable, useless and unnecessary debate,” said Ali.

The Jamaat leader further said that Mr. Katju has described the Muslim Personal Law as barbaric and backward. This is completely against facts. By making such statement, he seems to have fallen prey to the conspiracy for distorting the history of Islam. Personalities of his stature should save themselves from the conspiracy.

The Jamaat has challenged Mr. Katju to analyse just last one year’s data about crimes against women like brutalities, domestic violence, murder, rape and sexual harassment etc. and he “will surely know the truth that Muslim women are least affected and they are happily living under Muslim Personal Law.”

“Yet, if some Muslim women have faced violence and injustice it is not because of Muslim Personal Law but the weaknesses of the Muslim society. A responsible person and expert like Mr. Katju should understand the difference,” said Jamaat leader.

Mr. Umar Shariff, president of Discover Islam Education Trust (DIET) and spokesperson for the Bangalore based human rights group, Mission Possible for Justice and Rights (MPJR) asked, “If ‘Muslim Personal Law’ is termed as ‘barbaric’ by Justice Markandey Katju, then we conclude that he has violated the Indian Constitution by attacking the sentiments of the religious values of one section of India’s populace. Since he is supposed to be a learned man of the Indian Law, could he very well tell us the article under which we can file a case against him?”

Responding to criticism against his remarks, Mr. Katju said, “some people have sought to infer from my recent criticism of Muslim Personal Law that I am against Muslims or Islam. This is totally incorrect. Many of my best friends are Muslims, and I respect all religions including Islam, as I have repeatedly said. I am totally secular.”

Modi’s silence on hate campaign against minorities disturbing: Jamaat-e-Islami Hind

New Delhi: One of Narendra Modi’s harshest criticism against former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, during his election campaign was the latter’s silence on issues concerning the country and its people. However, since taking reigns, Mr. Modi seems to have been afflicted by the very element he and his party had accused the previous regime with.

Addressing the press meet at their headquarters in New Delhi, the country’s largest Muslim socio-religious organization, Jamaat-e-Islami Hind (JIH) expressed their concern at Mr. Modi and his government’s silence, at the vicious hate campaigns of right wing outfits and some of his party members’s targeting against minority Muslim and Christian community in the country.

“Jamaat is seriously concerned at the rise in hate campaign against minorities, particularly Muslims, since BJP came to power at the centre. There has since been a spate of communal incidents also (Saharanpur, Meerut, Muzaffarnagar, Kanpur etc.). At regular interval, leaders of BJP and Sangh Parivar have raked up contentious issues like Article 370 and Uniform Civil Code. RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat, in violation of the ethos of the constitution, said that India is a Hindu Rashtra and all citizens of this country are Hindus,” said the gathered Jamaat leaders.

Mr. Nusrat Ali, Secretary General of JIH, criticized Mr. Modi for maintaining silence on hate campaigns in the name of concocted theories like ‘Love Jihad’ and forced conversions.

“A period of 100 days is very short to judge a government elected by people for five years. However, the initial trends are not good. It seems the government is working on two fronts – while PM Modi is talking about development, some leaders of his party and Sangh Parivar have opened aggressive hate campaign against Muslims and Modi is silent. It seems there is a silent understanding among them,” said Mr. Ali.

While appreciating Mr. Modi for some of the good measures initiated during his first 100 days as PM, the Jamaat leaders said that, “PM Modi’s austerity moves like asking ministers not to buy new cars and curtail foreign tours and his announcement for toilets at every home and school, and bank account for every citizen are indeed good. In an apparent move to provide a clean and corruption free government, he asked ministers not to hire relative as personal secretaries. His visit to Japan was also successful in terms of attracting investment.”

However, the party also ccriticized the manner in which the BJP government and PM Modi used Teachers’ Day to impose his personality on the young minds of the country. “We are against the government for having made it compulsory for schools and children to listen to PM’s speech as we think such tendency does not match with democratic values of the constitution,” said Mr. Ali.

On the question of Al-Qaeda announcing its branch in India, the party leaders expressed apprehensions that this may be used by country’s intelligence agencies to witch hunt minority youths as has been the trend for past 10 years.
