BCCI suspends Mumbai cricketer Hiken Shah for corruption

Mumbai: The Board of control for Cricket in India (BCCI) suspended Mumbai cricketer Hiken Shah with immediate effect on Monday after finding him guilty of breaching its Anti-Corruption Code.

The BCCI said Shah made a “corrupt” approach to one of his colleagues from first-class cricket, who plays in one of the Indian Premier League (IPL) teams.

Shah is a left-hand batsman and leg-break bowler who made his debut for Mumbai in domestic cricket in 2006 but has since struggled to be a regular member of the team. He has played 37 First Class matches, scoring 2160 runs at 42.35 with six centuries.

“His involvement in any form of cricket, affiliated with the BCCI stands suspended till the time the disciplinary committee of the BCCI passes appropriate orders,” the BCCI said in a statement on Monday.

The approached player informed of the approach to his franchise team which reacted by informing the incident to BCCI’s Anti Corruption Unit (ACU). The ACU conducted an immediate enquiry into the matter and found Shah guilty.

“After a detailed inquiry into the reported incident, the inquiry commissioner found Hiken Shah guilty of committing breach of Articles 2.1.1; 2.1.2; and 2.1.4 of the BCCI Anti-Corruption Code for participants and recommended their provisions to the BCCI President,” the statement added.

BCCI president Jagmohan Dalmiya said BCCI is committed to uphold its stance of “zero tolerance” for fixing and reacted swiftly by ordering a probe.

“BCCI has zero tolerance for corruption in the game of cricket. We have and we will take swift action against such incidents to set a precedent and control the menace of corruption in the game. While placing the player under suspension, I have referred the matter to the disciplinary committee of the BCCI to take further action against the player involved,” Damiya said in the release.

BCCI secretary Anurag Thakur said the governing body’s education policy was beginning to show results and the incident proves that they are on the right track.

“This particular incident demonstrates that BCCI’s education policy against corruption is showing results, as the player approached was vigilant enough to report the matter to the ACU of the BCCI.

Having said that, the fight against corruption is an ongoing battle and we will not leave any stone unturned. BCCI is committed to keep cricket corruption-free,” he said.

Mumbai: The death toll in the illicit liquor tragedy in a country liquor bar in suburban Mumbai shot up to 81 on Saturday morning with the death of more people due to the poisonous brew, officials in Mumbai said.

Several victims are undergoing treatment in various hospitals, and the condition of at least a dozen is said to be critical.

The toll was 20 on Friday noon, and suddenly shot up to 66 on Friday night with more people dying at short intervals and more being admitted with symptoms of poisoning during the day.

Police have cracked down on the law enforcers by suspending eight officials, including senior Police Inspector of Malwani police station Prakash S. Patil, three officers and four constables, Deputy Commissioner of Police Kulkarni said.

Three people, identified as Raju Hanumant alias Langada, Gautam Avde and Donald Robert, were arrested for the tragedy as they allegedly transported illicit pouches of liquor from the Vasai-Virar region in adjoining Thane.

They were presented before a Mumbai magistrate who sent them to police custody till 26 July.

Police are on lookout for three other accused, including a woman bootlegger, involved in supplying the poisonous concoction leading to the tragedy.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis ordered an inquiry into the incident and sought a report within two days, an official spokesperson said.

The victims, mostly living in Laxmi Nagar slums and employed as low-paying drivers, daily labourers etc., had consumed the cheap country liquor at a bar in Rathodi village here on Wednesday night.

Since Thursday they started developing symptoms of poisoning, including vomiting, abdominal pain and burning sensation in eyes and sudden collapse.

Their alarmed family members rushed them to local hospitals, but some of them died on way. Many of the victims hail from Gulbarga region of Karnataka.

Minister of State for Home Ranjit Patil said Mumbai Police Crime Branch has taken over the probe into the incident.

Teams have been formed to trace the origin of the spurious liquor, those involved in brewing, selling and transporting it and other aspects, officials said.

This is the first major illicit liquor tragedy in Mumbai since December 23, 2004, when hooch claimed 87 lives.

Heavy rains disrupt services in Mumbai

Mumbai: Thousands are stranded across Mumbai as heavy rain, which has pounded the city since last night, severely affected train services and unleashed massive traffic jams. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the city’s civic agency, ordered all schools to be shut and issued an alert, advising residents to step out only if necessary.

Several flights in and out of Mumbai are still delayed owing to the incessant rain.

More showers have been forecast over the next 48 hours. The tide is expected to rise to 4.60 metres (nearly 15 feet) today.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who visited the civic agency’s disaster control room today, has promised that updated advisories will be issued every two hours to the city.

He also said, “Some trains are halted… we will have them running soon.”

With tracks completely waterlogged, operations are suspended on the Harbour line. Train services have also been stopped between the busy Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) and the Kurla suburb on the Central line. The Western Railways is running staggered services till Andheri.

Around 70-80 lakh people travel everyday by local trains, considered the lifeline of the city.

The city’s BEST buses have also altered their routes in view of flooding and heavy water-logging reported at several areas including Hindmata, Dadar, Parel, Sion, Vikhroli, Andheri, Jogeshwari, Santa Cruz.

Residents took to Twitter to warn others.

Mumbai recorded around 170 mm of rainfall till Friday morning; its suburbs recorded around 155 mm rainfall.

The Met department has warned of heavy rainfall and strong winds in Mumbai and the coastal Konkan region over the next two days.

Karnataka in Ranji final after 112-run win

Seventy minutes, 14.1 overs. That’s all it took for Karnataka to wrap up the Mumbai tail and take one step closer to defending their Ranji Trophy title.

Mumbai started the penultimate day of the semi-final at 277 for 6, 168 runs behind the target of 445. Their best hope of an outside chance to chase down the target was for one of the bowlers to bat with Siddhesh Lad, the specialist overnight batsman. However, Abhimanyu Mithun, S Aravind and Shreyas Gopal picked a wicket each to complete a convincing 112-run victory, their second successive win against Mumbai at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium.

Lad, who resumed batting on 41, took the initiative on the fourth morning while Balwinder Singh Sandhu tried to occupy one end of the crease. Sandhu, however, was adjudged leg before off Mithun following a doubtful decision. The fuller, incoming delivery had taken a thick edge off his bat on to the pads, but the umpire Vineet Kulkarni ruled in favour of the bowler. The wicket was Mithun’s fourth of the innings

After Shardul Thakur survived the initial burst, captain Vinay Kumar brought Shreyas Gopal in his place. The legspinner struck with his second ball, getting an edge off Thakur’s willow straight into Vinay’s palms at slip.

Lad, who stretched his innings to 74, was left with too much to do and the end came when Aravind bowled a gem to extract an edge off his bat soon after the drinks break. With the target being completely out of reach, Mumbai opted not to play allrounder Abhishek Nayar, who had struggled while batting out 12 overs on the third evening. Nayar had suffered a concussive head injury on the first day. The defending champions will now get an extra rest day before heading to Mumbai for the final.

Bengaluru: Karnataka captain R Vinay Kumar led from the front with a six-wicket haul that sent Mumbai crashing to a lowly 44 in their first innings on Day 1 of the Ranji Trophy semi-final, which saw 21 wickets fall, at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, in Bengaluru, on Wednesday.

Except for Shreyas Iyer, who scored 15, and Suryakumar Yadav (12), no other Mumbai batsmen got into double digit scores, as the 40-time champions registered their second lowest total in the history of the Ranji Trophy, with Vinay claiming six for 20 in eight overs. The resurgent Mumbai side’s total was only better than their lowest score of 42 all out against Gujarat in the 1977-78 season.

With a lead of 158 runs, Karnataka were at the receiving end in their second essay, ending the day on 10 for 2 from five overs.

Robin Uthappa (4), who top-scored with 68 in the first innings, and K L Rahul (2) were the batsmen dismissed.

Earlier, Mumbai pacer Shardul Thakur took four wickets as Karnataka were dismissed for 202 in their first innings after electing to bat first.

However, the defending champions struck back with a vengeance to claim a 158-run first innings lead.

For Mumbai, all-rounder Abhishek Nayar was unable to bat because of an injury sustained when on the field, after which he was taken to hospital.

Vinay gave Karnataka the perfect start as he struck with the second ball of the innings, getting opener Akhil Herwadkar leg before wicket for a duck.

Iyer attempted to steady the ship for a few overs before he was trapped leg before wicket by Abhimanyu Mithun.

India discard Vinay then took over the show, running through Mumbai’s middle order.

Mumbai captain Aditya Tare was caught behind for nine and Siddhesh Lad was caught at square leg off the very next delivery for a duck, in the seventh over of the innings.

Nikhil Patil (2) and Wilkin Mota (0) also fell off successive deliveries, giving Vinay his five-wicket haul.

Shardul had a wild swing against Vinay but was caught by KL Rahul for six before left-hander Harmeet Singh was leg before wicket by Arvind Sreenath in the next over for a duck. Sreenath also had Surya Kumar Yadav caught in the deep for 12.

Earlier, the in-form Thakur claimed four for 61, while Wilkin Mota took two for 18 as Karnataka collapsed after the dismissal of opener Robin Uthappa, who stroked a fluent 68, laced with 10 fours and a six.

Karun Nair was left stranded on 49, while Manish Pandey made 34 but the rest of the batsman failed to contribute with the bat for the defending champions.

India opener Rahul perished early when he pulled a short ball from Thakur straight into the hands of the fielder on the fine leg fence for 15 and R Samarth was run-out for a duck as the hosts slipped to 34 for two.

Uthappa and Pandey rallied Karnataka with a 81-run stand for the third wicket but the former’s dismissal saw Karnataka lose their way as wickets kept tumbling at regular intervals.

Ranji Trophy: Jammu & Kashmir take historic win over Mumbai

It was J&K’s first win over the 40-time champions in the tournament’s 79-year history.

Mumbai: Jammu and Kashmir upset domestic cricket giants Mumbai with a historic four-wicket win by chasing down 237 runs on the last day of the match here at the Wankhede Stadium on Wednesday.

It was J&K’s first win over the 40-time champions in the tournament’s 79-year history.

Opener Shubham Khajuria led the innings again, with a composed 78, and the win was secured by an unbeaten 41 from Hardeep Singh. Captain Parvez Rasool also contributed with a valuable 32.

J&K resumed on 58 for one and lost Bandeep Singh in the fourth over of the day.

But the visitors were steadied by Rasool and Hardeep and sealed the victory despite losing four more wickets.

Khajuria was named Man of the Match for his 50 in the second innings and 107 in the first.
