BPO employee gangrape: Two suspects being interrogated

October 6, 2015 by Nasheman

rape

Bengaluru: Two persons were being questioned in connection with the alleged gangrape of a call centre employee in a moving van here.

“We have rounded up two persons and brought them to the Madiwala Police Station where the case has been registered. We are verifying whether they were the ones who allegedly gangraped the call centre woman employee,” Deputy Commissioner of Police Rohini Katoch Sepat told PTI.

In a reminder of the horrific 2012 gangrape of a paramedical student in Delhi, the woman in her early 20s was waiting to hail an autorickshaw to return to her PG home and boarded the van which stopped by after she was offered a drop.

The woman was allegedly gangraped on the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday by the driver and the cleaner. One allegedly raped her in the vehicle and the other in a deserted spot before she was dropped in Madiwala area here from where she was picked up after a three-hour long ordeal.

The woman, who was initially reluctant to lodge a complaint, was persuaded to do so, police said. She was allegedly threatened by the criminal duo that she would be killed if she complained to police.  She was admitted to a hospital on Sunday and discharged yesterday.

Police said they have clues, as they began analysing the CCTV footage at traffic signals along the route taken by the van, which also passed by a police station.

In 2005, a 24-year old employee of a city-based multinational firm was raped and murdered by the cab driver who was later sentenced for life.

Woman raped in moving bus in Bhopal, three held

September 18, 2015 by Nasheman

rape

Bhopal: Three people accused of sexually assaulting a woman in a moving bus here on Wednesday night have been arrested and a case of rape slapped against them, an official said on Friday.

Anshuman Singh, police superintendent, Bhopal (south region), told IANS that the incident occurred on Wednesday when a 35-year-old woman was travelling by the state transport bus.

The woman was left alone after fellow passengers got down at a stop. When she wanted to get down, the driver asked her to wait till the bus took an about turn from a nearby roundabout.

Meanwhile, the conductor Deepak first misbehaved with her and then sexually assaulted her. The driver Sallu and another traveller Raju allegedly helped him in carrying out the assault. They later dropped her near an income tax office and fled.

The official said, “A rape case has been filed against all the three, as the two helped conductor Deepak in committing the act. All three have been arrested and bus seized.”

Saudi diplomat booked for allegedly abducting, raping two Nepali women

September 9, 2015 by Nasheman

rape

New Delhi: India could be trapped in a major diplomatic scandal after a senior diplomat belonging to the Saudi Embassy was accused, along with his wife, of allegedly abducting and raping two Nepalese women in Gurgaon.

According to the FIR filed by the police in Gurgaon, the two women had been lured to India with a false promise of jobs, and then sold to the diplomat, who is the First Secretary at the embassy.

According to the statements of the victims, aged 30 and 32, they were held captive by the First Secretary’s family for over three months, and were taken to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, for a few days as well. During the entire period, the women said, they were repeatedly raped and forced to perform “unnatural sex” for the diplomat and other Saudi nationals, often at knife-point.

An official who was aware of the women’s account of their captivity called the details “horrifying.”

Reportedly, the Saudi embassy, dismissing the charges as “completely false” and “contrary to facts in our possession”, said it would wait for the Indian government to clarify on the matter as per diplomatic norms.

An MEA official said the Saudi embassy’s version and that of the Nepalese embassy that has taken up the issue “were different and need to be reconciled.”

Assistant Commissioner of Police (Crime) and Gurgaon police spokesperson Rajesh Chechi said the women were rescued by Gurgaon police after a Nepalese NGO that deals with trafficking heard about their plight from another Nepali victim.

The women had been held in the upmarket residential area of DLF-Phase II in Gurgaon. The Gurgaon police raided the home after the Nepalese embassy in Delhi contacted the government for help. A rape case had been registered, PTI reported, but the diplomat was “untraceable.”

“We have sought a report from the local police,” the MEA spokesperson said.

Officials said they feared the diplomat, whose wife and father have also been charged, has taken a flight out of Delhi already.

An official said that given their diplomatic status “there was no chance” of arrest. “Despite the terrible nature of the crime, unless the Saudi Arabian government waives it, the immunity will protect them completely.”

The victims, residents of Banglung and Biratnagar districts in Nepal, said they had been lured by a woman trafficker to Delhi four months ago on the promise of a job and handsome salary in Saudi Arabia. The two were, however, sold to another agent in Delhi for Rs.1 lakh each and then to the Saudi diplomat, who they identified as ‘Majid’. “Majid first took the two women to Saudi Arabia. The abuse continued after he returned with them to Delhi three months ago and kept them in captivity at his DLF house,” said Bal Krishan, the president of Maiti Nepal India.

The ordeal of the two women came to light when another woman sold to the diplomat 10 days ago managed to escape and alerted Maiti Nepal India that works in the areas of prostitution, trafficking and child labour. The NGO contacted the Nepal embassy and a letter was written to the Gurgaon police in this regard.

The Gurgaon police team then raided the house on Monday afternoon and rescued the women. Mr. Krishan, who was present during the rescue, said the diplomat’s family put up a resistance.

The case mirrors cases of trafficking and slavery in the U.K. and the U.S. In 2011, a case in the U.K. involving two Indonesian women held as slaves by a Saudi diplomat in London had caused an uproar after details emerged of their ill-treatment.

In 2013, another case involving two women from the Philippines, held captive for months by the Saudi defence attaché and his wife living in a mansion in Virginia, U.S., had led to similar outrage.

In both cases, the diplomats could not be prosecuted due to immunity, and a U.K. court ruled that the Indonesian women were not eligible for any compensation either. In this case, Nepal embassy officials said that they were hoping to pursue the case with Saudi authorities, and would help repatriate the two victims to Nepal at the earliest.

Body of 21-year-old woman found in Delhi, rape suspected

August 21, 2015 by Nasheman

rape

New Delhi: The body of a 21-year-old woman, who went missing on Thursday, was found without any clothes on from a secluded and vacant plot in Mundka on early Friday, Delhi Police said.

A police official said that the circumstantial evidence clearly indicate sexual assault followed by murder. The body was recovered from a vacant plot in west Delhi’s Mundka area.

The deceased, an employee with a Delhi-based non-governmental organisation (NGO), had been missing since Thursday evening.

“We had filed the missing complaint when the family members of the deceased approached us,” the official said.

“The body was spotted by a morning walker who informed police. It was lying in naked condition in the plot situated in Bhagya Vihar colony,” the official said, adding that the woman might have been killed to cover up the rape.

“Prima facie evidence suggests that she might have been killed by strangulating her throat, but we are still waiting for the post-mortem report to confirm the exact cause of her death,” the official said.

The woman, who originally belonged to West Bengal, was residing with her family in Mundka for the last few years.

Bengaluru: Girl sexually abused by orphanage chairman; accused arrested

August 20, 2015 by Nasheman

rape

Bengaluru: A 12-year-old girl was reportedly rescued on Tuesday August 18 night after she managed to escape from the orphanage near Peenya where she lived. She alleged that she was sexually abused by the Chairman for the past two months.

A woman, who found her wandering in the neighbourhood, questioned her and on coming to know her predicament, immediately took her to Soladevanahalli police station. She narrated her plight and said that it was impossible for her to stay at the orphanage.

Acting on the girl’s statement, SM Vijayraj (35), the founder-chairman of the orphanage was arrested on Wednesday.

Vijayraj had been running the orphanage since 2004 for orphans or whose parents cannot look after them. There are about 30 children of which 8 are girls.

The victim’s mother is a daily wage labourer and had brought her to the orphanage about 3 years ago after her father passed away. She left her daughter in the orphanage believing that she would be given good food, accommodation and education.

The girl’s ordeal began about two months ago when Vijayraj started sexually abusing her and sometimes violently. The girl, unable to bear the torture had earlier attempted to run away from the orphanage.

The police are now questioning the staff of the orphanage. They are also speaking to the children to check for any other such cases. Efforts are on to trace the girl’s mother who lived in Ramamurthynagar. The district child protection officer has met the girl and she has been admitted to a private hospital.

‘We are born once, we die once; let us do something good in between’ – this is the mission statement of the orphanage where the girl was sexually abused. Vijayraj claims that he too was an orphan. A priest took care of him and gave him education.

The orphanage was started in 2004 for providing shelter, food and education to children and thus runs largely on donations. The trust founded by Vijayraj also has an old-age home.

Child molestation case: School headmistress, husband arrested

August 7, 2015 by Nasheman

rape

Bengaluru: The headmistress of a private school and her husband were arrested here on Thursday in connection with the alleged molestation of a three-year-old pre-nursery student by its security guard, a senior police official said.

“We have taken school headmistress Shirley Soujanya and its trust secretary and her husband Anil Kumar into custody under sections 188 and 336 of the Indian Penal Code for failing to protect the victim and implement the safety guidelines,” city additional police commissioner P. Harishekharan told reporters here.

Accused guard Gautam, 25, was arrested on Tuesday under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and section 376 of the IPC a day after the child’s parents filed a police complaint about the crime that occured on the school campus on Monday.

“The school management violated the mandatory guidelines enforced last year by employing the accused without a background check and disobeying order of a public servant (police commissioner) in ensuring safety and security of the students,” Harishekharan said.

The alleged sexual assault came to light when the victim complained to her parents of abdominal pain on returning home from school on Monday afternoon.

According to preliminary investigation, the guard was working in the school for four years and resides on school premises with his wife, an attendant in the same school.

“The victim’s elder sister, who also studies in the school, told her parents that the guard would often call her younger sister by name, fondle her and give chocolates to both of them,” Harishekharan recalled.

Bengaluru: 3-yr-old girl sexually assaulted in school, staff questioned

August 4, 2015 by Nasheman

rape

Bengaluru: A three-year-old girl was allegedly sexually assaulted on her school campus in Indiranagar. Police said they received a complaint and are investigating a case of suspected sexual assault, based on information provided by the survivor’s parents.

A doctor from Bowring Hospital, where the child was taken, said: “The parents brought the child to the hospital around 5pm. They were accompanied by a woman police officer. When they picked up the child from school around 12.30pm, she was crying and complaining of abdomen pain. The parents found bruises on her private parts. Tests are still going on,” the doctor said around 10.30pm.

The child is a pre-nursery student. Her father works with a restaurant. The family lives in east Bengaluru.

“We received a complaint from the family of a three-year-old child alleging sexual assault. We are verifying the details. The parents said the child is crying ‘Uncle, school’ to all their queries. The time of incident is not clear. Medical tests have been conducted and results are awaited. We can’t say anything more as the matter is under investigation,” DCP (East) N Satish Kumar told TOI.

Police quoted school authorities as saying the campus is covered by CCTV cameras and no case of sexual abuse has been caught on them. Angry scenes prevailed at Bowring Hospital as well-wishers of the girl’s family gathered and demanded that they be allowed inside to see the child.

A family friend present in hospital said the parents rushed to Indiranagar police station late Monday afternoon and told officers what had happened. The child was later taken to Bowring Hospital. “Medical tests are under way. Police are questioning some school staffers,” the neighbour added.

City police booked a case under various sections of the Protection of Children From Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act, 2012, and the IPC’s Section 376 (rape).

This is the first case of sexual assault on a school campus reported in the city this year. Last year, a spate of assaults were reported on school campuses, sparking protests by parents.

The police and education departments stipulated a string of norms be followed on campuses. Schools, though reluctant, had to fall in line. CCTV coverage of campuses, GPS tracking of buses, background checks on staffers and attendants on campus were among the several measures to be implemented by schools.

Rape-accused Asaram called a ‘saint’ in Rajasthan school textbook

August 3, 2015 by Nasheman

Asaram Bapu

Jodhpur: Rape accused Asaram features in a chapter on saints in a Class III textbook in the district, sharing space with Vivekananda, Mother Teresa and Ramakrishna Paramhans.

Yoga guru Ramdev is also included in the list of saints in the moral education and GK textbook ‘Naya Ujala’ which is taught in many schools of the district.

The chapter also has pictures of Guru Nanak, Kabir, Meerabai and Shankaracharya and the children have been asked to identify them including Asaram, who is in a Jodhpur jail after being arrested in a rape case.

The book has been supplied by a Delhi-based publisher Gurukul Education Books.

Asked about the inclusion of Asaram’s name, a representative of the publishing house said when the book was published, there was no case against Asaram.

“Now we are withdrawing the books from the market and are preparing a new edition of the book sans Asaram”, he said.

When officials of the education department were asked about the book, they expressed ignorance about the matter.

However, they said notices would be issued to the school authorities where the textbook is part of the curriculum.

Asaram is in jail since August 2013 on charges of sexual assault. He was arrested after a 16-year-old girl lodged a police complaint, alleging that the self-styled godman sexually assaulted her at his ashram in Jodhpur.

To cure his wife, man targets 7 minor girls, rapes and kills 4

August 1, 2015 by Nasheman

rape

Mathura: Following the advice by a Hindu tantric, a man raped and killed four minor girls and was on look to rape and murder three more girls! This chilling revelation came after a man identified as Sonu was arrested by the police earlier this week.

Sonu reportedly told police that the tantric had told him that to cure his wife he needed to sexually assault and kill seven minor girls in all.

Incidentally, Sonu is the friend of Lalua Balmiki who on Tuesday had been dragged out of a police station in Mathura and lynched by a mob of about 100 men. The mob had attacked Lalua after accusing him of the rape and murder of a 12-year-old girl.

Police said that Sonu further told them that in his dark deeds it was Lalua who aided him. Sub-inspector Omkar Sharma of Farah police station in Mathura, tasked with guarding Sonu from angry mobs as he recuperates from injuries at the SN Medical College in Agra, said the man had confessed to the murder of the 12-year-old girl whose brutalised body was found in the bushes outside Parkham village early this week.

“A girl about 14 years old was raped and murdered on November 23, 2010. She had arrived in the village for a wedding but never returned to the venue after wandering out. The second was a child, just four years old. She was killed in 2012. Her body, with the head smashed in with a large stone, was recovered in the village. He (Sonu) said the third girl was a nine-year-old. He did not recall the date of that murder,” Omkar Sharma said. The 12-year-old was the fourth victim.

SSP Mathura, Rakesh Singh, admitted that in the three earlier incidents, cases had been registered at the local police station though villagers alleged that these were not the only murders the duo had committed.

The 12-year-old whose body was recovered on Tuesday was from the Thakur caste. Since Sonu and Lalua are Dalits, the matter has now taken a caste colour. Most of the men who set upon the duo were from the higher caste.

On Thursday, Sonu’s parents said besides lynching Lalua, the upper caste group had also set their home on fire. “We have been forced out of the village, we have nowhere to go now,” said Shyamlal, Sonu’s father.

On Wednesday, police lodged an FIR against 100 unnamed men for dragging Lalua out of police lock-up and lynching him. Four policemen were suspended for laxity at work.
