American in China injured in ‘sonic attack’ similar to Cuba

May 24, 2018 by Nasheman

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said a brain injury sustained by an American official in a “sonic attack” in China was similar to those that affected US and Canadian diplomats in Cuba.

Pompeo’s remarks on Wednesday came hours after the US embassy in China issued a health warning to Americans living in the country an “unusual” auditory or sensory phenomena.

The embassy said a US government employee in the southern city of Guangzhou reported experiencing a “subtle and vague, but abnormal, sensations of sound and pressure”, which led to a mild brain injury.

Pompeo told the House Foreign Affairs Committee the “sonic attack” in China was similar to the incidents in Cuba last year.

“The medical indications are very similar and entirely consistent with the medical indications that have taken place to Americans working in Cuba,” he said.

The US was moving medical teams to the area to work on the case, he said.

“We are working to figure out what took place both in Havana and now in China as well,” Pompeo said.

In Washington for talks with Pompeo, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said the US should avoid politicising the case.

“We don’t want to see that this individual case would be magnified, complicated or even politicised,” Wang told reporters.

“China has been investigating this matter in a very responsible manner. We haven’t found that any organisation or individual has carried out such a sonic influence.”

He suggested the US carry out an “internal” probe into the case.

‘Variety of symptoms’

Washington expels 15 Cuban diplomats over ‘sonic attacks’ (2:50)
Heather Nauert, the state department spokeswoman, said the US embassy learned on Friday that the Guangzhou employee showed concussion symptoms after medical testing.

That is the same clinical finding doctors treating the Cuba patients at the University of Philadelphia found.

The Guangzhou worker started experiencing “a variety of symptoms” starting in late 2017 that lasted through April this year, Nauert said.

The worker was sent to the US for further evaluation, she added.

In Cuba last year, 24 diplomats and their family members were left with mysterious injuries resembling brain trauma, which were suspected of being caused by a “sonic attack”.

Ten Canadian diplomats and their relatives also suffered similar illnesses.

The still-unexplained incidents sparked a rift in US-Cuban relations, while investigators have chased theories including a sonic attack, an electromagnetic weapon, or a flawed spying device.

Symptoms, sounds and sensations reportedly varied dramatically from person to person, according to The Associated Press.

Some have permanent hearing loss or concussions, while others suffered nausea, headaches and ear-ringing. Some struggle with concentration or common word recall.

Needed someone to bat through the chase, Rahane : IPL

May 24, 2018 by Nasheman

Stressing that they needed one of the top four batsmen to stay at the crease till the end, skipper Ajinkya Rahane said with so many wickets in hand, Rajasthan Royals should have won against the Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League (IPL) Eliminator here.

Chasing 170 for a place in the Qualifier 2, the Royals on Wednesday were 87/1 after 10 overs with Rahane and Sanju Samson looking good for a match-winning partnership.

But then they–particularly Rahane–got stuck against spin and left their weak middle order with too much to do, eventually losing by 25 runs as they managed 144/4 in 20 overs.

While Samson (50 off 38) was removed by Piyush Chawla, chinaman bowler Kuldeep Yadav got rid of Rahane (46 off 41).

“We thought 170 was chaseable. We needed partnerships and we got those partnerships initially with (Rahul) Tripathi and then me and Sanju Samson. We needed one batsman to bat throughout those 19-20 overs and we did not do that,” Rahane told reporters at the post-match press conference.

“Unfortunately Sanju got out in the 17th over and that was the reason I felt…when you are chasing 170 in a pressure game you need one batsman from top 4 to bat through the innings,” Rahane added.

Rahane said Andre Russell–who hit an unbeaten 25-ball 49 to propel KKR to 169/7 after a disastrous start–played fearless cricket.

“We had the self-belief I felt. Initially, the way we started with the ball. Our fast bowlers, the spinners…getting those 4-5 initial wickets was crucial,” said Rahane.

“But credit goes to (Andre) Russell..the way he batted, played fearless cricket. But again we started off really well. First six overs, we were 50/1 then after second timeout (14th over), we needed seven overs and 60 odd runs. When you have eight to nine wickets in hand you generally end up getting those runs,” Rahane added.

Dinesk Karthik (52) and Shubman Gill (28) stemmed rot for the purple brigade after they were reduced to 51/4 at one stage.

Rahane revealed he had asked Samson during the second strategic timeout in the 14th over to play till the end while he would look to up the ante.

Rahane fell to Kuldeep in the first ball after the break when they still required 61 off 36 balls. Two overs later, Samson departed.

“I think our plan was to go deep. I just told Sanju after second timeout that I will play some positive shots and if you are still there, you bat deep,” said Rahane.

“Credit goes to KKR bowlers. Especially the way they bowled the last 4-5 overs. If you see, last 36 balls we got 30 odd runs. So when opponents bowl like that, credit goes to them. We need to learn for next season. We batted well in patches and were not that good enough throughout the season,” he added.

Asked the reason for sending Heinrich Klaasen and Stuart Binny ahead of K Gowtham who can score at a brisk pace, Rahane said, “If you see Klaasen is a very good batsman. He did well in the last game and it is difficult when you don’t get those runs and try and think what if Gowtham was sent to bat.”

“But we backed Klaasen. He tried his best. KKR spinners were really good. With our batting line-up, we wanted to go deep and if Klaasen can come, they have 7-8 overs left, that was a perfect opportunity for him. Unfortunately, we didn’t cross the line,” he said.

“I don’t think the strategy was wrong there. Gowtham’s batting position..he batted well at No.6 and 7…credit goes to KKR bowlers,” Rahane added.

Why Mamata Banerjee Was Unhappy at Kumaraswamy’s Swearing-in Ceremony ?

May 24, 2018 by Nasheman

Karnataka chief minister HD Kumaraswamy’s swearing-in ceremony at Vidhana Soudha may have seen a galaxy of non-BJP leaders, but not all guests seemed happy on the occasion. Among them was West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee.

The Trinamool Congress chief was seen conveying her displeasure to Karnataka police chief Neelamani Raju after she reached the venue.

Initially, the onlookers were perplexed when they saw Banerjee gesturing to Karnataka director-general of police, who was near the stage. It later came to light that the TMC chief was asked by the Bengaluru police to “get off her car and walk a short distance” from the gate to the podium because of heavy flow of VVIP vehicles, several of them with full security detail.

West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee reprimands DIG Neelamani Raju as she came to Karnataka Vidhana Soudha for oath taking ceremony because reportedly had to walk a few metres, also expressed discontentment to HD Deve Gowda & HD Kumaraswamy. #Bengaluru

Only one of the four gates of the Vidhana Soudha compound had been opened because of security reasons, a report said. According to news agency ANI, Banerjee also expressed her discontentment to JD(S) supremo HD Deve Gowda and his son Kumaraswamy. A senior police officer in the city traffic police told The New Indian Express, “There were 18-20 convoys and it was crazy managing them. Firstly, none of them were entitled to zero-traffic, except for the Governor and the new Chief Minister. Then, convoys were coming from various directions at the same time and there was no chance for the police to ensure free movement for all of them. Many of the convoys were stuck in between other vehicles. We were not in a position to do anything about it and it was not unexpected too.” Besides Banerjee’s car, the convoys of Andhra Pradesh chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu, Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati and a few others were also stuck in the traffic. AAP spokesperson Raghav Chadha posted a picture of Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal walking to the venue of swearing-in ceremony on a rain-splattered day.

N.Korea threatens to walk away from US summit

May 24, 2018 by Nasheman

North Korea will reconsider the planned summit with the US if Washington sticks to “unlawful and outrageous acts,” Pyongyang’s Vice Foreign Minister said on Thursday.

In a statement carried by the state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), Choe Son-hui said that whether the June 12 summit between its leader Kim Jong-un and US President Donald Trump will happen as scheduled entirely rests on the decision and behaviour of Washington, reports Yonhap News Agency.

“Whether the US will meet us at a meeting room or encounter us at nuclear-to-nuclear showdown is entirely dependent upon the decision and behaviour of the US,” Choe said.

“In case the US offends against our goodwill and clings to unlawful and outrageous acts, I will put forward a suggestion to our supreme leadership for reconsidering the summit,” she added.

The threat came after South Korean President Moon Jae-in and Trump held a summit in Washington on Tuesday where the latter suggested the summit with the North might not take place on June 12.

North Korea has ramped up criticism of the US for forcing “unilateral” denuclearisation.

The Trump administration maintains that it seeks the complete, verifiable and irreversible dismantlement of North Korea’s nuclear programme, with no promise of concessions until that process is in motion.

The North reportedly wants a phased and synchronous approach.

Choe singled out US Vice President Mike Pence and slammed him for mentioning a Libya-style approach and military option against the North in a recent media interview.

“US Vice-President Pence has made unbridled and impudent remarks that North Korea might end like Libya, military option for North Korea never came off the table, the US needs complete, verifiable, and irreversible denuclearisation, and so on,” she said.

“As a person involved in the US affairs, I cannot suppress my surprise at such ignorant and stupid remarks gushing out from the mouth of the US Vice-President.”

Pyongyang last week suspended its contacts with Seoul and altered the cordial tone used in recent months with South Korea and the US.

Kerala Health Minister K.K. Shailaja on Wednesday said that the outbreak of Nipah virus (NiP), which has claimed 10 lives, has been contained and there was no need to panic.

Seventeen people are being treated at the Kozhikode Medical College Hospital. The disease has been confined to Kozhikode and Malappuram districts.

But the minister said two new cases of patients with suspected NiP and fever were reported in Kozhikode and they were under observation.

Shailaja told the media here that though the virus had been contained, there was a need be alert.

“The entire expenditure of these patients would be borne by the state and there need not be any panic over bats. The government is awaiting the supply of ribavirin, a drug that’s commonly used for treating similar cases,” she said.

After presiding over the cabinet meeting, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Wednesday announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 5 lakh each to the families of the dead.

“We have also decided to give a government job to the husband of the nurse Lini who died after attending to Nipah virus patients in Perambra in Kozhikode,” he said.

“Their two children will be given Rs 5 lakh each and this can be withdrawn when they turn 18,” a statement issued by Vijayan’s office said.

Transmission of NiV takes place through direct contact with infected bats, pigs or from other NiV-infected persons.

Meanwhile, three teams of health experts deputed by the Centre are working in Kozhikode along with various teams of the state government, officials said.

Karnataka CM to take floor test on Friday

May 24, 2018 by Nasheman

Karnataka’s new Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy will take the floor test in the Assembly on Friday to prove that the Janata Dal-Secular-Congress coalition government enjoys a majority in the house.

“I will take the floor test on Friday to prove that our coalition government has a majority in the Assembly,” Kumaraswamy told reporters after taking oath as Chief Minister in front of the state Secretariat building here.

Governor Vajubhai Vala directed Kumaraswamy on May 19 to take the floor test after forming his government with the Congress.

Expressing gratitude to the Congress for extending support to JD-S, Kumaraswamy said that a fractured verdict in the May 12 elections caused political instability in the state for a week, since no single party got a clear mandate to rule.

“The BJP, the single-largest party with 104 of the 222 seats that went to polls, backed off as it did not have a majority and its Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa bowed out three days after forming the government hastily,” he said.

“I would like to convey to the people of Karnataka that they need not worry about the survival or duration of our government even after the trust vote as we (JD-S and Congress) have buried the hatchet to work for the state’s development as alliance partners,” the Chief Minister said.

Allaying fears over the working of the coalition government, the JD-S leader said he was ready to shoulder the responsibility for socio-economic development of the southern state.

“Doubts about the our government’s survival are unwarranted as both parties are committed to provide an efficient administration for public welfare, especially of farmers, women, youths and senior citizens,” he said.

Though the JD-S won 37 seats, its effective strength in the 225-member house is 36, as Kumaraswamy won from Channapatna and Ramanagaram seats. The Congress has 78 seats.

With the support of one MLA each from Bahujan Samaj Party, a regional outfit, and an independent, the alliance has the combined support of 117 members as against a halfway mark of 111, excluding the Speaker, in the Assembly whose present strength is 222.

Elections for the Jayanagar and Raja Rajeshwari Nagar constituencies are pending.
