Jethmalani moves SC against Karnataka Governor’s decision

May 17, 2018 by Nasheman

Senior lawyer Ram Jethmalani on Thursday approached the Supreme Court in his personal capacity against Karnataka Governor Vajubhai Vala’s decision of inviting BJP leader B.S. Yeddyurappa to form a new government in the state despite being eight short of a simple majority in the assembly.

A bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra, Justice A.M. Khanwilkar and Justice D.Y. Chandrachud asked Jethmalani to mention his plea on Friday before the bench concerned.

Jethmalani, who had taken retirement from law practice, told the bench that the Karnataka Governor’s order is a “gross abuse of Constitutional power”.

The apex court early on Thursday after a midnight hearing refused to stall the swearing-in of Yeddyurappa as Karnataka’s new Chief Minister.

Yeddyurappa took the oath as the Chief Minister of Karnataka on Thursday at 9 a.m. at the Raj Bhavan amid tight security.

The court, however, sought the communications which Yeddyurappa had written to Karnataka Governor informing him his election as BJP legislature party.

The apex court said that the swearing-in is subject to the final outcome of the matter before it.

The bench headed by Justice A.K. Sikri, while seeking Yeddyurappa’s response on the petition by Congress and Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S) seeking to stall his swearing-in, has directed further hearing of the matter at 10.30 a.m. on Friday.

BJP cadres chant ‘Modi, Modi’ at Yeddyurappa’s swearing-in

May 17, 2018 by Nasheman

Loud chants of “Modi, Modi” by about 100 jubilant cadres of the BJP were heard at the oath-taking ceremony of their leader B.S. Yeddyurappa as the Chief Minister of Karnataka at Raj Bhavan here on Thursday.

Even as Yeddyurappa was signing the relevant papers after taking oath in Kannada, administered by Governor Vajubhai R. Vala, the “Modi, Modi” chants reverberated across the ‘Glass House’ in the green lawns of Raj Bhavan in the city center.

Excited over Yeddyurappa, 75, becoming Chief Minister for the third time, celebrations broke out in front of Raj Bhavan, at the party’s office in the city’s northwest suburb and many districts across the southern state.

Sporting a green shawl, symbolizing solidarity with farmers in the state, Yeddyurappa took the oath in the name of god and farmers.

Among the party’s national and state leaders present at the simple swearing-in ceremony were Union Ministers Prakash Javadekar, J.P. Nadda, D.V. Sadanda Gowda and Ananth Kumar and Lok Sabha lawmakers from the state Prahlad Joshi and Shobha Karandlaje.

Though Yeddyurappa was seen smiling and waving the victory, he did not speak to the media on the occasion but headed to the state’s secretariat in the nearby Vidhana Soudha building that also houses the state legislature.

The BJP leader, who was invited by the Governor on Wednesday to take oath as the Chief Minister and form the government, was directed to prove his majority on the floor of the House within 15 days of assuming office.

“We will get the support and prove our majority on the floor of the House,” a confident Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Ananth Kumar told reporters outside Raj Bhavan.

Sadanand Gowda called it an end of dictatorship as Yeddyurappa took the oath as the 23rd Chief Minister of the state.

“Though the power-hungry JD-S (Janata Dal-Secular) and Congress tried to stop the mass leader BSY (B.S.Yeddyurappa) from becoming CM, people of Karnataka held the hand of BSY tight. Dictatorship is over now. It’s the people’s government in Karnataka,” Gowda tweeted.

Yeddyurappa takes oath as Karnataka CM with SC nod

May 17, 2018 by Nasheman

BJP’s legislature party leader B.S. Yeddyurappa took oath as the Karnataka Chief Minister here on Thursday hours after the Supreme Court declined to stay his swearing-in ceremony.

Governor Vajubhai Vala administered the oath of office and secrecy to Yeddyurappa at 9 a.m. at the Raj Bhavan amid tight security.

Yeddyurappa, 75, took the oath in Kannada in the presence of party’s central and state leaders and its newly-elected legislators and senior officials.

Earlier, a three-judge bench of the apex court rejected a joint writ petition of the Congress and the Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S) to stall the swearing-in of Yeddyurappa as the Chief Minister at a special pre-dawn hearing.

The top court, however, said the swearing-in of Yeddyurappa was subject to the final outcome of the matter before it and posted the case for further hearing at 10.30 a.m. on Friday.

The bench, headed by Justice A.K. Sikri, also sought the letter Yeddyurappa wrote to the Governor on Wednesday informing him his election as the Bharatiya Janata Party’s legislature party leader in Karnataka.

He was elected for the eighth time from the Shikaripura assembly segment in Shivamogga district of the Malnad region on May 12 when polling was held in 222 constituencies across the state and results were declared on Tuesday.

This is the third time Yeddyurappa took oath as the Karnataka Chief Minister, a decade after he became the BJP’s first Chief Minister in south India in May 2008 when the party came to power for the first time in Karnataka.

He was sworn-in for the first time as the chief minister in October 2007 as the party’s leader in the JD-S-BJP coalition government that lasted for over a month, resulting in President’s rule from November to April and mid-term assembly elections in May 2008.

All that has happend.

May 16, 2018 by Nasheman

Tuesday saw a high drama befitting the most important political battle of 2018. A few hours into counting of votes in the Karnataka Assembly elections, when it looked that the BJP could grab 100-plus seats, the Congress made a stunning announcement – of offering unconditional support to the Janata Dal (Secular) and staking claim to form a coalition government. An outsmarted BJP also declared it will stake claim to form the next government given that it has emerged as the single largest party.

The final results threw up a fractured verdict – BJP 104 seats, Congress 78 and the JD(S) 37 – with no party having a clear majority of 113 seats in the 224-seat Karnataka Assembly. Amid massive fears of poaching, the drama has moved on to a second day with the spotlight firmly on the Raj Bhavan in Bengaluru and everyone keenly watching who Governor Vajubhai Vala will call for the floor test. BJP’s chief ministerial candidate B S Yeddyurappa met the Governor this morning. Congress and JD(S) went to the Raj Bhavan last evening.

All that has happened since the Karnataka Election results were declared:

* Congress and JDS took their MLAs to the Raj Bhavan at 5pm. They may possibly parade them before Governor Vajabhai Vala to buttress their claim of having enough numbers to form the government.

* Earlier, BS Yeddyurappa met the Governor Wednesday morning. In a presser later, he said: “I met the Governor and handed over letters of support that we have. He told me he will take the appropriate decision as early as possible.”

* only 66 out of the 78 MLAs were present at the Congress legislative meeting held at KPCC office in Bengaluru. Congress, however, said some MLAs were delayed as they took a special flight from Bidar.

*JD(S) president H D Kumaraswamy is elected leader of JD(S) legislature party. In a press conference, he said his MLAs were being offered Rs 100 crore and cabinet ranks. BJP’s Prakash Javadekar rejected the charges as ‘imaginary’.

Karnataka government formation: Congress-JD(S) and BJP stake claim to power Janata Dal (Secular) leader H D Kumaraswamy speaks to the media on Tuesday after staking claim to form the government with the Congress
* Congress’ Amaregouda Linganagouda Patil Bayyapur, who won the election from Kushtagi, says he was contacted by the BJP and asked to switch sides,

* Siddaramaiah said the Governor has to invite the JD(S)-Congress to form the government as they have the support of 117 MLAs. “PM Modi is encouraging horse-trading. We are all united,” he said on claims of dissent in the party.

* if Congress-JD(S) were not invited by the Governor, then their MLAs will sit on a ‘dharna’ outside Raj Bhavan from tomorrow. MPs may also join them.

* When asked if Congress would take the legal recourse, Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad told that: “At this juncture, we’ve complete faith in the Governor that he will go by the Constitution and not party politics.”

*BJP’s central leadership had on Tuesday rushed leaders J P Nadda, Dharmendra Pradhan and Prakash Javadekar to Bengaluru. P Muralidhar Rao, in-charge of Karnataka who had come to Delhi Monday, also returned to the state after meeting Amit Shah

*After the results, Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted: “I want to assure the people of Karnataka that the BJP will not allow the state’s development journey to be trampled upon”.

*As many as 18 ministers of the Siddaramaiah government were defeated. The Chief Minister himself lost one of the two seats he contested by a wide margin.

*The BJP won 16 of 19 seats in coastal Karnataka as against four in 2013, and 30 of 50 seats in the Mumbai Karnataka region where it won only 13 last time.

*Over a year ago, the BJP had formed governments in Manipur and Goa despite not being the single largest party in the polls. Much like BJP now, Congress had then cried foul and termed it ‘murder of democracy’.

RCB take on SRH in must-win game : IPL 2018

May 16, 2018 by Nasheman

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) will take on already-qualified table toppers Sunrisers Hyderabad in a must-win Indian Premier League (IPL) encounter here on Thursday with their playoffs chances hanging by a thread.

After registering successive victories over Delhi Daredevils and Kings XI Punjab, the Virat Kohli-led RCB are a rejuvenated unit while SRH have been the team to beat this season, having won nine matches out of 12.

RCB are still languishing at the second last position on the table, while SRH are on top of the table with 18 points.

RCB lost seven of their 12 matches so far but the recent turnaround have rekindled hopes of a possible shot at the play-offs albeit some other results also going their way.

Kohli and ace South African batsman AB De Villiers are RCB’s key players as far as the batting in concerned.

The pair have combined to pile up nearly half of RCB’s total runs this season but the side needs bigger contributions from the likes of Moeen Ali and Corey Anderson.

Kohli has led from the front with 514 runs in 12 games.

De Villiers (358 runs) is next to him, although he has played two games less than the Indian captain.

RCB’s bowling is spearheaded by India pacer Umesh Yadav who has looked in inspired form this term.

Umesh has delivered for the team, taking 17 wickets so far.

Coming to the away side, SRH depend quite a lot on opener Shikhar Dhawan (369 runs) and skipper Kane Williamson (544 runs) for inspiration.

Williamson has been a top leader since David Warner was ruled out of the IPL due to his role in the ball tampering incident.

The New Zealand captain would look to consolidate the team’s top spot and ensure a top-two finish at the end of the league stage.

Apart from Dhawan and Williamson, Yusuf Pathan (186), Manish Pandey (189) and Shakib-Al-Hasan (166) have also chipped in at crunch situations for SRH.

The former champions’ bowling has been their strength with the likes of Siddharth Kaul (13 wickets), Bhuvneshwar Kumar (8), Sandeep Sharma (8), leg-spinner Rashid Khan (13) and Shakib-Al-Hasan (12) adding a lot of variety to their arsenal.

Teams:

RCB: Virat Kohli (Captain), Quinton de Kock (WK), Brendon McCullum, AB de Villiers, Sarfaraz Khan, Mandeep Singh, Chris Woakes, Washington Sundar, Kulwant Khejroliya, Umesh Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Colin de Grandhomme, Moeen Ali, Manan Vohra, Aniket Choudhary, Navdeep Saini, Murugan Ashwin, Pawan Negi, Mohammed Siraj, Corey Anderson, Parthiv Patel (WK), Aniruddha Joshi, Pavan Deshpande, Tim Southee.

SRH: Kane Williamson (Captain), Shikhar Dhawan, Manish Pandey, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Wriddhiman Saha (WK), Siddharth Kaul, Deepak Hooda, Khaleel Ahmed, Sandeep Sharma, Yusuf Pathan, Shreevats Goswami, Ricky Bhui, Basil Thampi, T Natarajan, Sachin Baby, Bipul Sharma, Mehdi Hasan, Tanmay Agarwal, Alex Hales, Carlos Brathwaite, Rashid Khan, Shakib Al Hasan, Mohammad Nabi, Chris Jordan.

Indian women’s hockey team beats China

May 16, 2018 by Nasheman

Defending Champions India continued their winning performance as they beat World No.8 China 3-1 in their second round-robin match at the fifth Women’s Asian Champions Trophy at the Sunrise Stadium here on Wednesday.

India had earlier beaten Japan 4-1 in their opening match on Sunday.

It was experienced forward Vandana Katariya who starred in India’s victory as she scored double goals in the 4th and 11th minute that gave a formidable lead early on for the Defending Champions while Gurjit Kaur (51st) was the other goal scorer for India.

India were in attack mode right from the start. While a constructive defence against a strong Chinese squad was imperative, India showed zeal as they pushed for an early goal.

It was impeccable team work between Lilima Minz, Navjot Kaur and Vandana that ensured India were put ahead of China by a goal in the fourth minute.

An assist by Navjot to Lilima who used a reverse shot to the post found a perfect deflection off Vandana’s stick.

Their second goal came off Udita’s clever assist to Vandana who smashed it past China goalkeeper giving India a comfortable 2-0 lead.

Udita had taken the shot on goal herself but was obstructed by the Chinese goalkeeper; she picked up the rebound, but surrounded by Chinese defenders she pushed the ball to Vandana who took her time to channel the ball into the goal post.

Having pushed China on the back foot early on, the World No.8 squad were desperate for a breakthrough.

Their moment of reckoning came in the 15th minute when Wen Dan converted a well-struck field goal to narrow the lead to 2-1 before going into the first break. China had earlier won four back-to-back penalty corners but could not breach Savita’s fine goalkeeping.

While the second quarter saw India keep up the momentum and show excellent defensive skills that kept China from equalising, the third quarter saw Savita showcase good goalkeeping skills to keep China from converting their fifth penalty corner.

India put up a attacking front yet again in the fourth quarter that fetched an important penalty corner in the 51st minute.

Gurjit Kaur, who is India’s lone drag flick expert, made no mistake in swiftly striking the ball to the centre of the post taking India’s lead to 3-1.

With the clock ticking away, China looked to come back into the game but a goal remained elusive. Though they won a penalty corner in the dying minutes of the game, the Indian defenders steered clear to register their second successive win.

Andhra launch capsize: 12 bodies recovered

May 16, 2018 by Nasheman

Bodies of 12 persons including two children were retrieved from Godavari river in Andhra Pradesh on Wednesday as a search was on for others who went missing after a launch capsized the previous evening.

Rescue workers pulled out the launch by using boats and heavy cranes. Earlier, the Indian Navy personnel traced the launch reportedly at a depth of 60 feet.

Teams from the Navy, state disaster management department and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) were engaged in the rescue operations with the help of Navy helicopters.

Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, who rushed to the scene to supervise rescue operations, told reporters that 10 more bodies were yet to be pulled out.

The incident occurred near Manturu in Devipatnam block of East Godavari district around 5 p.m.

The boat, which sailed from Kondamodalu, was on its way Rajamahendravaram. It is believed to have capsized due to gusty winds.

Naidu announced Rs 10 lakh compensation each for the next of kin of the deceased. He said the government would provide jobs to one member each from the families of the victims and would also make arrangements for free education for their children.

The Chief Minister said human error led to tragedy. He was informed by the officials that the launch was carrying cement bags and two-wheelers.

When the boat was caught in gusty winds and rains, those onboard closed the windows. This led to the capsize and also sealed the escape routes.

The incident came close on the heels of a boat with over 100 tourists catching fire in the Godavari river in the same district on May 11.

The passengers had a narrow escape as the driver wheeled the boat to the shore and they jumped off before the entire boat was completely destroyed.

Modi behind horse trading in Karnataka’s BJP: Siddaramaiah

May 16, 2018 by Nasheman

Karnataka’s outgoing Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Wednesday accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of encouraging horse-trading to lure Congress and JD-S legislators to their party for forming the government after the May 12 assembly election gave a fractured mandate.

“Modi and Shah are supporting BJP leaders in horse-trading to poach legislators of our party and the Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S) to prevent us from forming the next government in the state,” Siddaramaiah told the media here.

Asserting that the party would not allow the BJP to form a government in the state at any cost, Siddaramaiah said none of the Congress legislators were missing or likely to defect to the BJP.

“We have a plan to safeguard our MLAs, who are together and will not join the BJP, which has 8 less seats for the 112-halfway mark and prove majority,” Siddaramaiah said.

Of the 222 assembly segments in the state, the BJP has won 104, Congress 78 and JD-S 38, including one by its ally Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP).

“We have extended our support to the JD-S to form the new government, with its state leader H.D. Kumaraswamy as Chief Minister. As we have the numbers (118), Governor Vajubhai R. Vala should call our alliance first than the BJP, which does not have the required numbers,” pointed out Siddaramaiah.

Both the post-poll alliance partners met Vala on Tuesday evening and staked claim to form the new government in the southern state.

Outgoing power minister and Congress winner D.K. Shivakumar said the party’s legislators were intact and none were ready to switch over to the BJP.

Party’s senior leader Ghulam Nabi Azad said the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) met here and passed a unanimous resolution to support Kumaraswamy, who was elected as JD-S legislative party leader earlier in the day.

“We have sought appointment with the Governor to submit our resolution and letters of our party legislators in support our stake to claim power,” Azad told reporters at the party office in the city centre.

I’m done with my quota of small roles: Nawazuddin Siddiqui

May 16, 2018 by Nasheman

Having risen from an actor who began his career with small bits in various films, Nawazuddin Siddiqui has clearly reached a point where he has shown not only his versatility, but also the ability to hold films on his own. The actor, who will be seen playing writer Saadat Hasan Manto and late Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackeray in separate films, says he’s done with cameos.

Here for his film “Manto”, which features in the Cannes Film Festival’s Un Certain Regard section, Nawazuddin was all praise for the film’s director Nandita Das’ “impeccable research”.

He shies away from naming a favourite director or even sharing his wish list.

“If I take names, the others will feel bad about it. As an actor, I only look at stories, script and most importantly my character in the film. There is also a selfishness that works and I think it’s quite normal that I look for characters that will challenge me and push me to the limits,” Nawazuddin told this correspondent.

He is clear that there is no room for any more cameo appearances for him.

“No, I will not do it anymore (laughs). It’s as simple as that, why will I do them? I am done with my quota of small roles,” he said.

Nawazuddin is also venturing into production, taking on projects such as “Manto” as a co-producer.

“There are some upcoming films that I am co-producing as well. My brother is very much into this doing the scouting for me. I definitely want to produce films as well,” he said.

He rules out exploring foreign shores for roles, saying he is content with India and the diversity of roles he is getting to do.

“For the time being, I am satisfied that all my directors in India are giving me characters that are pretty challenging and I am happy doing those.

“Just for the sake of a branding that I am an international star, I would not do that. How many films in the world are like ‘Manto’? Very few. So, I have no such predetermined affiliation for international projects. I am proud of Nandita and a film like this is no way less than any international film.”

On him getting typecast, Nawazuddin said: “I think it’s completely a wrong conception. If I am doing (playing) Bal Thackeray and Manto at the same time, how can one say that I am typecast? The Bollywood heroes are typecast, they do the same thing all their life and they are never asked these questions.

“Now the films made in India are allowing actors like us to step in the shoes of lead characters and that makes us versatile. So, those who are still doing this (stretches his hand) are typecast, not me,” he said.

The heavy downpour that accompanied the interview perhaps reflected the emotional response of the viewers to “Manto” at the screening here in Cannes.

The actor says the period film clearly touched a chord with the audience at Cannes.

“I have seen people crying in the audience, there were people who came out with a very satisfied face. And the best part was I think the film has tried to hit the conscience of people very hard. There were many who came up to me and said that the film was very well timed,” Nawazuddin said.

That should not be surprise as the film’s director, Nandita, has always found a warm reception at Cannes, where she has had her films screened and also been a part of the jury.

Nawazuddin said a lot of hard work and impeccable research has gone into the making of “Manto”, which was not the typical rapid production in Bollywood style. He compliments his director’s attitude towards the script and the film.

“See when Nandita told me that the film is just not the stories of Manto but his life as well, I was hooked to it.

“Manto’s life in itself is very interesting. This was perhaps four years back and we tried all these years to make the concept that she was building come true. I just understood that this character will let me achieve a lot and will take away a lot of things that I always wanted to give as an actor.

“Nandita’s research was impeccable and what I got in my hands was almost half baked. It was a pleasure working with her,” he said.

On his own preparation for the role, he said he had already read Manto’s stories and had also enacted one of them, which made it easier for him to cast himself in the role.

“I am not a writer, so I can only behave like a writer…It’s not possible to be a writer. What I could do was create an impression of a writer on-screen. I have tried to that. I have always tried to portray the ground reality of a character whenever I acted.

“Manto’s writing in itself is depiction of truth in every form and Nandita has always told us to exercise that in our performances. Not only had I, but each one of us tried not to be a cliche when portraying their parts in the film. I can’t specifically say one I like all the stories of Manto.

“I read them and I love them. I had done ‘Toba Tek Singh’ maybe twenty years back, so I relate to it. Otherwise, stories like ‘Khol Do’, ‘Kali Salwar’ or ‘Thanda Gosht’ are all my favourites.”
