Going is tough for Congress in some Mysuru district constituencies

May 9, 2018 by Nasheman

There may not be an action replay in one urban constituency in this district, Narasimharaja. Electing one Muslim family five years ago and nine times earlier it may not go for it this year.

Moving fast backward, it may opt for another Muslim candidate who was a runner-up in the previous poll. Abdul Majeed was defeated in 2013 by only 9,000 votes.

Mainly because of it, Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI), which is the political wing of the Kerala-based Popular Front of India, has fielded him again.

It is not the only bad news for the Sait family which has won the seat ten times — six times by Azeez Sait and four times by his son, Tanveer. The family has hit the headlines for attack by its supporter on a media person.

Correspondent of a national English daily has filed a police complaint saying that he was manhandled by his suppoters in the city when he was collecting some information.

The family has apologised but the case has not been withdrawn. An inquiry, therefore, is being made. Further action will be taken in the light of inquiry report.

Some journalist bodies have now joined the fight.

There has been one more complaint to the police. The complainant in the second case is the Congress, the party Sait belongs to. The party has complained against the SDPI candidate, Mazeed, for pinning state chief minister Siddaramaiah picture on his lapel and allegedly telling the people that he has got his “blessings”.

Since this action can confuse Congress supporters the party has lodged a complaint against him.

The constituency has been a Congress bastion. The BJP has won it only once in 1994, that too with a small margin. The other major contestant here is JDS.

Interestingly, the Samajwadi Party, which has parted company with the Congress as well as the Bahujan Samaj Party, in Karnataka, has fielded 31 candidates in the state including one in this constituency. It is not a major force in the southern region.

It is the second party, after the BJP, which has put up a Hindu candidate in this Muslim-dominated constituency.

A member of the family, Azeez Sait, was first elected from this seat in 1967. He was re-elected in next poll. Azeez bagged the seat four more times, representing the constituency for 30 years.

His son Tanveer who is seeking re-election has been already elected four times and is sure of victory again (fifth time).

The BJP strategy this time seems to be to polarise Hindu votes. For this purpose it has put up a Hindu candidate, Sandesh Swamy. As its rivals have put up Muslim candidates, a consolidation of Hindu votes may help the party.

The Congress, for all these reasons, is having a tough time in this constituency. The going is not easy for the party in some others including Krishnaraja. Under the circumstances, it is unlikely to repeat its 2013 performance and bag eight out of eleven seats in the district.

Microsoft in motion to secure billions of connected ‘Edge’ devices

May 9, 2018 by Nasheman

As the world prepares to see billions of connected devices in the next few years, Microsoft is busy creating a right mix of first responders — putting a robust Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology in place to safeguard Cloud-powered “Edge” devices against cyber attacks, a top company executive has emphasised.

The company expects 20 billion connected devices globally by 2020.

While “Intelligent Cloud”, “Intelligent Edge” and the Internet of Things (IoT) present enormous opportunities, the ever-growing threat of hackers breaking into those devices — be in office or at home — is for real.

The “Edge” broadly means when end users interact with Cloud, such devices can be anything — from drones to PCs, from smartphones to cameras, from refrigerators to TVs and so on.

“We see attacks coming from all sides — via passwords, emails, spam, malicious links or websites and so on — targeting millions of end-point devices and Cloud infrastructure at any given point of time.

“What sets us apart from the others are our AI algorithms and a full-time team of 35,000 engineers — working round-the-clock to spot bad actors, analyse and mitigate those. They are our first responders to cyber threats,” Julia White, Corporate Vice President of Microsoft Azure, told IANS.

Microsoft uses advanced analytics — processing more than 450 billion authentications per month, scanning 400 billion emails for malware and phishing and updating one billion devices — to deliver actionable insights.

The company’s “Intelligent Security Graph” takes advantage of advanced analytics that link a massive amount of threat intelligence and security data to provide insights that can strengthen security.

“With the ‘Intelligence Security Graph’, we can see wide range of attacks and build better AI models to find anomalies and secure our customers who are constantly asking for enhanced experiences with devices and Azure Cloud,” she informed on the sidelines of the “Build 2018” Developers’ Conference here.

Microsoft spends over $1 billion every year on cyber safety and security-related research and development.

When it comes to Cloud security, Azure Active Directory (Azure AD) is another service that provides a secure solution for an organisation via stronger identity management and single sign-on (SSO) access to thousands of Cloud-based and on-premises apps.

The company last month announced to invest $5 billion in IoT over the next four years.

“IoT is ultimately going to be the new ‘Intelligent Edge’. With our IoT platform spanning Cloud, OS and devices, we are uniquely positioned to simplify the IoT journey so the customer can create trusted, connected solutions,” White noted.

The company’s “Azure IoT Edge” service delivers Cloud intelligence locally in a country by deploying and running AI, Azure services, and custom logic directly on cross-platform IoT devices.

“There are so many ‘Edge’ devices now that we have open-sourced ‘Azure IoT Edge’ for the developers’ community. It will allow customers to modify, debug and have more transparency and control for ‘Edge’ applications,” White elaborated.

To help enterprises secure their data and networks against growing cyber attacks, Microsoft recently introduced “Azure Sphere”, an industry-first platform to create secured, connected micro-controller unit (MCU) devices on the “Intelligent Edge”.

MCU-powered devices are the most populous area of computing, with roughly nine billion new devices being introduced every year. MCUs are found in everything — from toys and household appliances to industrial equipments.

“We’re now seeing the kind of increased adoption and exponential growth that analysts have been forecasting for years, and we’re just getting started. This effect will be pervasive, from connected homes and cars to manufacturers to smart cities and utilities — and everything in between,” White stressed.

“We will continue research and development in key areas, including securing IoT, creating development tools and intelligent services for IoT and the ‘Edge,'” she added.

India fastest growing economy at 7.4% in 2018: IMF

May 9, 2018 by Nasheman

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) reaffirmed on Wednesday that India will be the fastest growing major economy in 2018, with a growth rate of 7.4 per cent that rises to 7.8 per cent in 2019 with medium-term prospects remaining positive.

The IMF’s Asia and Pacific Regional Economic Outlook report said that India was recovering from the effects of demonetisation and the introduction of the Goods and Services Tax and “the recovery is expected to be underpinned by a rebound from transitory shocks as well as robust private consumption.”

Medium-term consumer price index inflation “is forecast to remain within but closer to the upper bound of the Reserve Bank of India’s inflation-targeting banda of four per cent with a plus or minus two per cent change, the report said.

However, it added a note of caution: “In India, given increased inflation pressure, monetary policy should maintain a tightening bias.”

It said the consumer price increase in 2017 was 3.6 per cent and projected it to be five per cent in 2018 and 2019.

“The current account deficit in fiscal year 2017-18 is expected to widen somewhat but should remain modest, financed by robust foreign direct investment inflows,” the report said.

After India, Bangladesh is projected to be the fastest-growing economy in South Asia with growth rates of seven per cent for 2018 and 2019; Sri Lanka is projected to grow at four per cent in 2018 and 4.5 in 2019, and Nepal five per cent in 2018 and four per cent in next. (Pakistan, which is grouped with the Middle East, is not covered in the Asia report.)

Overall, the report said that Asia continues to be both the fastest-growing region in the world and the main engine of the world’s economy.

The region contributes more than 60 per cent of global growth and three-quarters of this comes from India and China, which is expected to grow 6.6 per cent in 2018 and 6.4 per cent in 2019, it said.

The report said that US President Donald Trump’s fiscal stimulus is expected to support Asia’s exports and investment.

The Asian region’s growth rate was expected to be 5.6 per cent for 2018 and 2019.

However, in the medium term the report said that “downside risks dominate” for the region and these include a tightening of global financial conditions, a shift toward protectionist policies, and an increase in geopolitical tensions.

Because of these uncertainties the IMF urged the countries in the region to follow conservative policies “aimed at building buffers and increasing resilience” and push ahead with structural reforms.

“While mobile payments are expanding sharply in such economies as Bangladesh, India, and the Philippines, on average Asia is lagging sub-Saharan Africa,” the IMF said, adding that the region should take steps to ensure it is able to reap the full benefits of increasing digitalisation in the global economy.

An ex-President’s grandson in poll fray for Bengaluru seat

May 9, 2018 by Nasheman

G. Subramanyam Sharma, 44, the grandson of former President Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan (1888-1975), is contesting from Malleswaram constituency in the May 12 Karnataka Assembly elections as a candidate of a fringe party to erase “inequality” in the state.

“As inequality between rich and the poor is widening in society, someone has to balance it through the system, into which I want to enter and usher in equality,” Sharma, a candidate of the newly-formed All India Mahila Empowerment Party (AIMEP), told IANS in an interview.

The Chennai-born Sharma, who moved to Bengaluru over a decade ago (2006), turned a serial entrepreneur to provide jobs for others .His family-owned Sudeeksha Group is into diverse businesses spanning pharmacy, infrastructure, movies and dairy farming.

“I originally come from a family of academicians, and not politicians,” said Sharma, whose father is renowned philosopher-statesman Radhakrishnan’s nephew (sister’s son).

Radhakrishnan was the second President of India from 1962 to 1967. Sharma is also related to V.V. Giri (1894-1980), who was the fourth President from 1969 to 1974, from his father’s side (paternal grandfather’s brother).

Sharma, after years of working as an entrepreneur, wanted to step up as a change-maker and find solutions to improve the healthcare, education and job-providing capabilities of Indian society.

With initial plans to contest as an Independent in the ensuing polls, he prepared an election manifesto with the changes he and the people in the constituency wished to bring about in the locality.

“I had no intention of joining any of the three national parties — Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Congress or the Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S) — as they’ve never really worked towards people’s issues and have only blamed each other for political gains,” Sharma asserted.

In his poll manifesto, Sharma has outlined plans to provide free electricity to the whole constituency by setting up solar panels on all the rooftops of homes, upgrade the public health centres, government hospitals and public schools in the Malleswaram area, one of the oldest localities of this tech hub, through better infrastructure. He also wants to work towards youth in each household of Malleswaram being employed.

But after a meeting with AIMEP’s founder and national president Nowhera Shaik, a Hyderabad-based businesswoman who set up the party in November 2017 to contest in the May 12 election, Sharma was convinced that his ideology was in line with the party’s.

“I was certain after meeting Shaik that the party is for all common people — from auto rickshaw drivers to working citizens, and believes in the same social balance I aim to achieve. I joined the party and was allowed to retain the manifesto I planned for my constituency,” the 44-year-old recalled.

The AIMEP, which had announced it would field candidates from all the 224 constituencies in the state, has fielded over 170 candidates.

If elected, Sharma also plans to hold job fairs in the constituency to provide jobs for the youth from each of the households — in public and private sectors.

“I hope that in this election people will give a chance and opt for other parties than the national parties, and for candidates who truly want to bring a change in the state,” added Sharma.

BJP seeks countermanding of Bengaluru seat poll over ‘fake’ voter IDs

May 9, 2018 by Nasheman

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday urged the Election Commission to countermand the Assembly election in the Rajarajeshwari Nagar segment of the city’s southwest suburb after about 10,000 allegedly fake voter IDs were allegedly found in the locality.

“The BJP demands countermanding of elections in Rajarajeshwari Nagar in light of latest revelations of tens of thousands of fake voter IDs and empty packets of hard currency. This is Congress conspiracy to rig election in the face of their imminent defeat,” tweeted Union Human Resource Minister and the party’s in-charge for state polls Prakash Javadekar.

The state’s Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Sanjiv Kumar, addressing the reporters on late Tuesday night, said 9,746 voter cards were seized from a flat in the constituency.

“After a surprise visit was paid to a flat in Jalahalli locality (in the Rajarajeshwari constituency) nearly 9,746 voter ID cards were found. Five laptops and one printer was also found in the flat,” Kumar said.

There were over a lakh slips resembling acknowledgement slips used for adding names into the electoral rolls, the CEO said.

“On preliminary verification, these voter ID cards were found to be genuine, but the counterfoils need to be verified through investigation.”

The EC will register a First Information Report (FIR) on the matter and would take action after investigation, Kumar added.

The Assembly election across 223 constituencies of the state will be held on May 12.

Of the 225-member lower house, including one nominated, election in the Jayanagar seat in south Bangalore has been countermanded and postponed owing to the death of BJP candidate B.N. Vijaya Kumar on May 4. Votes will be counted on May 15

Time for Congress to bid adieu to Karnataka: Modi

May 9, 2018 by Nasheman

After having lost the assembly elections in Maharashtra, Goa, Assam and Himachal Pradesh among other states, it was time for the Congress to bid adieu to Karnataka, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said here on Wednesday.

“It is now time for the Congress Party to depart Karnataka. Wherever in the country there has been an election opportunity, the party has (lost)” the Prime Minister said addressing a rally here.

“What will happen in Karnataka on May 15,” he asked referring to the day on which the votes cast will be counted.

Taking a dig at Congress President Rahul Gandhi’s statement on becoming the Prime Minister in 2019, Modi said: “He came like those bullies, barging his way ahead when there are others who have many years of experience.”

“How can someone just declare himself as the Prime Minister? This is simply nothing but arrogance,” he said.

Modi also said that the six Cs of the Congress — “culture, communalism, casteism, crime, corruption, and contractualism” — has “ruined” every state that they have been in power.

“When (former Prime Minister) Manmohan Singh had his government in the Centre, the remote control was at the 10, Janpath (official residence of former Congress President Sonia Gandhi),” he said.

Under his rule, Modi said, it is the people of the country who hold the remote control.

The Prime Minister said he would continue to follow the orders of the “high command” — the countrymen, the citizens.

“Whenever Congress gets a chance to form its government anywhere, only corruption grows. Under the Bharatiya Janata Party, only good things get a chance.”

May 8, 2018 by Nasheman

Integrated Transport System; Multi-point connectivity to Airport
BENGALURU, MAY Tuesday vowed to make the city a truly world class metropolitan.
Releasing the manifesto, Namma Bengalurige Namma Vachana the Union Minister for Parliamentary
Affairs, Chemical Fertilisers, Sri H. N. Ananth Kumar said – the party decided to have a separate manifesto because
the Silicon City of Bengaluru is like Mini-Bharat with a population of more than one crore.
In the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagar Pailke (BBMP) elections, the Union Minister said, although BJP got
clear majority winning 102 wards out of 198-wards, Congress and JDS, through an opportunistic alliance, captured
power by cooking up a majority (local resident MLCs also having voting power). Their maladministration and
corruption ruined the city. The holy nexus of contractors, builders and land mafia got further fillip from State
Congress regime. They gave “3G Bhagya” which means Goondaism, Gundi (potholes) and Garbage. To reverse this
condition Bengaluru needs a special attention.

Bangalore Metropolitan Regional Governance Act (BMRGA) – will be enacted.

Hosakote Bus Terminus through Kadugodi and on the other side it would be extended up to Bidadi Bus Terminus
through Kengeri. The new R V Road Metro line to Bommasandra will be extended up to Attibele.
Sri. Ananth Kumar said – the Union Government will extend all help to new BJP Government in Karnataka
to integrate Metro, Suburban Railway and BMTC bus services, which will lead to seamless transport system in the

speed up the suburban railway work.

opened in all the 198 wards of Bengaluru.
Former Deputy Chief Minister, R Ashok said – major steps would be taken to regain the green cover of
Bengaluru. At least one crore trees would be planted in Bengaluru. Focus will also be given to improve a law and
order situation in Bengaluru, he added.
Union HRD Minister and party in-charge Karnataka elections, Sri Prakash Javadekar; MPs Sri P C Mohan and
Sri Rajiv Chandrashekhar; State BJP General Secretary, Sri Ravikumar; former Minister Sri S Suresh Kumar and MLA,
Dr. Ashwathnarayana were present.
