Amid nationwide outrage over the recent cases of crime against women, a statement by a lawyer proves exactly why situation in the country is not going to change soon.

As hearings in the Kathua rape case are underway, several revelations seem to be taking place on daily basis. Recently, the defence counsel, representing five of the eight accused in the case, has not only raised questions on the probe conducted by the Jammu and Kashmir police but also questioned the capability of the senior investigating lady officer stating that it was beyond her “intelligence.” As per reports, the defence counsel, Ankur Sharma said that the case was investigated by a woman who is also a new officer. He added, “She was misguided by someone.”
Ankur Sharma said that the police officers involved in the investigation and also the bureaucrats are nothing but the ‘puppets’. The following claims by the lawyer come in after the officer, Shwetambri Sharma, talked about the hurdles and problems she faced while investigating the brutal murder and rape of an 8-year-old Bakerwal girl. Reports suggest that the Kathua rape case took place in January and the chargesheet was filed by the police some three months later. Reacting to the reports of lady officer being threatened, the lawyer asked, “If she had faced so many hurdles why didn’t she inform her superiors about it?”

“At the point when Veerappa Moily needed to challenge to Lokasabha from this locale in 2009, after confronting three continuous defeats from Mangalore, we coordinated with him to save the party. In spite of the fact that numerous local leaders were against him, we worked for him. Subsequently, he got 26,000 votes from Bagepalli supporters. Subsequent to being chosen as Union minister he additionally said that ‘Sampangi gave me political resurrection following 14 years gap’. In any case, this is the thing that we got from him,” he said.
“There are no corruption charges against me. If the party cheats sincere Congressmen like us, there are many followers who believe us. The party can still change the decision, otherwise, I will discuss with the followers regarding the next step,” Sampangi said emotionally.

Journos Demand Apology From TN Governor For Patting Scribe’s Cheek
A collective of journalists in Tamil Nadu have lashed out against Governor Banwarilal Purohit for patting the cheek of a lady reporter without taking her permission. In a letter addressed to him late on Tuesday night, the journalists have demanded that he should issue an unconditional apology.
“unbecoming” of a person holding a Constitutional post. The incident took place when the 78-year-old Governor was about to leave the venue of the crowded press conference at the Raj Bhavan, which was all set to conclude.

DMK Rajya Sabha MP Kanimozhi tweeted “even if the intention is above supsicion, a person who holds a public office has to understand that there is a decorum to it and violating a woman journalist’s personal space does not reflect the dignity or the respect which should be shown to any human being.” “It is not only unfortunate, but unbecoming of a person holding a constitutional post,” DMK Working President M K Stalin said in his twitter handle.
In their letter to Purohit, the collective of TN journalists too have sought to remind him that his act was even more shocking because he is a constitutional figure. “Your action today in touching the cheek of a senior lady reporter who asked you a question at the press meet was patronising at best and a violation of her rights as a woman at worst,” read the letter. “It, however, does not behove the Constitutional head of a State to throw basic courtesy and respect to the winds and attempt to touch a lady without her consent, even if the gesture may have been ‘paternal’ in nature. “

Won’t stake claim to Taj Mahal: Wakf Board to SC
The Uttar Pradesh Sunni Wakf Board on Tuesday told the Supreme Court that it won’t stake claim to the ownership of the Taj Mahal.

Asking senior counsel A.D.N. Rao appearing for the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to take instructions, a bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra, Justice A.M. Khanwilkar and Justice D.Y. Chandrachud said that once the Board pressed its right over the monument then it has to adjudicate the issue.
“Once you have registered the monument as a Wakf property, your statement that you will not be staking claim will not help,” said the bench and directed the next hearing on July 27.
In its hearing on April 11, the apex court asked the Wakf Board to produce an original title document bearing the signatures of Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan to prove its claim.
Telling the court the Taj Mahal is owned by the almighty, the Sunni Wakf Board on Tuesday said it has no document from the Mughal rulers or their descendents bestowing the 17th century monument in its favour.
The Board said the monument belonged to it as its members have been continuously performing Urs on the death anniversary of Emperor Shah Jahan and Friday Namaz at the Majid located in the compound of the Taj Mahal.
Such a course would create problems, observed the bench.
In an obvious reference to a decedent of Mughal empire, the Board told the court that no human can lay claim to the magnificent monument.
Y.H. Tucy, who claims to be the great grandson of last Mughal Emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar, has said that the Taj Mahal is the nation’s property and no one can claim right over it.
“Remember Emperor Shah Jahan has not written a deed in favour of Waqf,” Tucy had told IANS in an interview.
The Archaeological Survey of India moved the top court in August 2005 after the Wakf Board registered the Taj as Wakf property.
The top court then issued notices on ASI’s plea and stayed the board’s move and the matter is pending since then.
