Anti-CAA play in Bidar school: Bail orders of two arrested reserved

February 12, 2020 by Nasheman

Headmistress Farida Begum and Nazbunnisa, the mother of a girl studying in fifth grade in the same school, are those arrested in the case.

Handcuffs, arrest

BIDAR:  The fate of seven persons who are facing sedition charges in relation to an anti-CAA drama staged at Shaheen Urdu Primary School here still hangs in balance. While two among them – the headmistress of the school and a girl student’s mother – are already arrested and remanded in judicial custody, five others on the school management board have filed for anticipatory bail.

Principal District and Sessions Court Judge Managuli Premavathi who heard the regular bail application of two arrested in the case reserved the orders for February 14. While the same court adjourned the case on advance bail of five others accused in the case to February 17.

Headmistress Farida Begum and Nazbunnisa, the mother of a girl studying in fifth grade in the same school, are those arrested in the case.

The student had taken part in the controversial play during the annual day held on January 21, only to stir a hornet’s nest. President of Shaheen Educational Institution Abudl Khader and management committee members Allauddin, Md Bilal Inamdar, Yusuf Raheem and Md Mehetab are the other accused in the case.
A panel of four advocates headed by B T Venkatesh of Bengaluru along with advocates Prasanna from Bengaluru and Keshav Shirimale and Narayan Ganesh from Bidar argued on behalf of all the accused persons. Public Prosecutor Balabheem Madansure argued on behalf of the prosecution.

The advocates appearing for the accused argued against treating the drama as a sedition case. The staging of a play comes under Freedom of Expression and the dialogues of the drama were common in any of the dramas. The public prosecutor who strongly opposed the granting of bail, stated that as the investigation is still under progress, releasing them on bail would adversely affect the investigation.

The accused may influence witnesses and tamper with evidences. The same team of advocates who argued for the anticipatory bail for the other accused referred to cases of Kedarnath vs State of Bihar and Balavant vs State of Punjab. Venkatesh placed that “the charges levelled under sedition against the management are false. Whatever the drama was played in the school by the students would come under Freedom of Expression.

Neither the prime minister has been insulted nor has an act of sedition been committed by the students of the institute. It is a politically motivated case, as the complainant in this case belongs to a political party.

As Public Prosecutor Bala Bheem Madansuri sought three days time to file objections for anticipatory bail. The judge adjourned the case to February 17.

Enforcement Directorate questions DK Shivakumar’s mother, brother in money laundering case

February 12, 2020 by Nasheman

The money laundering case was registered against Congress leader by the ED in September 2018, based on a complaint filed by the Income Tax department.

Congress leader DK Shivakumar

BENGALURU: Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials on Tuesday questioned Gowramma, mother of Congress leader DK Shivakumar, in connection with a money-laundering case.

She was questioned at Shivakumar’s farmhouse in Kodihalli. DK Shivakumar’s brother and Congress lawmaker DK Suresh was also questioned by the ED officials.

The money laundering case was registered against Congress leader by the ED in September 2018, based on a complaint filed by the Income Tax department, alleging tax evasion and hawala transactions running into crores.

Last year, the Congress leader was arrested by the agency on September 3 and was sent to judicial custody in Tihar jail on September 17. Prior to that, he was in ED’s custody for 14 days.

On October 23, the Delhi High Court had granted bail to Shivakumar while taking into note that he had been extensively interrogated by the probe agency since his arrest on September 3.

WHO warns of ‘very grave’ global threat over Coronavirus spread

February 12, 2020 by Nasheman

The virus, first identified in China on December 31, has killed more than 1,000 people, infected over 42,000 and reached some 25 countries.

Coronavirus

GENEVA: The head of the World Health Organisation on Tuesday warned the novel coronavirus was a “very grave threat” for the world as he opened a conference to combat the epidemic.

“With 99% of cases in China, this remains very much an emergency for that country, but one that holds a very grave threat for the rest of the world,” Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said in Geneva.

Some 400 scientists will review how the virus is transmitted and possible vaccines at the two-day forum.

“What matters most is stopping the outbreak and saving lives. With your support, that’s what we can do together,” Tedros said.

The virus, first identified in China on December 31, has killed more than 1,000 people, infected over 42,000 and reached some 25 countries.

Participants will also discuss the source of the virus, which is thought to have originated in bats and reached humans via another animal such as snakes or pangolins.

There is no specific treatment or vaccine against the virus, which can cause respiratory failure.

Tedros, who has repeatedly urged countries affected to share their data, called for global “solidarity”.

“That is especially true in relation to sharing of samples and sequences.

To defeat this outbreak, we need open and equitable sharing, according to the principles of fairness and equity,” he said.

“We hope that one of the outcomes of this meeting will be an agreed roadmap for research around which researchers and donors will align,” Tedros said.

Several companies and institutes in Australia, China, France, Germany and the United States are racing to develop a vaccine — a process that normally takes years.

Asked whether scientists from Taiwan would be allowed to take part in this week’s Geneva conference, WHO officials said that they would do so but only online — along with colleagues from other parts of China.

While the WHO does not deal with Taiwan directly and only recognises Beijing, Taiwan was often allowed to attend annual assemblies and sideline meetings as an observer.

But in recent years it has been frozen out as Beijing takes an increasingly combative stance towards democratic Taiwan, which it considers its own territory.

‘I love you, Delhi’: Kejriwal soaks in capital win, swearing-in on Valentine’s Day

February 12, 2020 by Nasheman

“It is my wife’s birthday. I had cake, you will also get it,” Kejriwal said. “People elected us with high hopes. I cannot do it alone, we all have to work together,” he added in his victory speech.

Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal greets supporters after the landmark victory in Delhi elections at party headquarters in New Delhi on Tuesday Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal greets supporters after the landmark victory in Delhi elections at party headquarters in New Delhi on Tuesday.

The Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) won another landslide victory on Tuesday in the high-stakes Delhi Assembly polls, leaving its main rival, the BJP, way behind and decimating the Congress in a bitterly-fought contest that took place in the midst of massive protests over the new citizenship law.

The AAP won more than 3/4th of the seats and the BJP was reduced to a single-digit tally while the Congress drew a blank in the 70-member assembly.

Later, addressing volunteers at the party office, Kejriwal said the party’s landslide victory in the capital was a blessing of Lord Hanuman and the people of Delhi. He also thanked his own family members for their support.

Coincidently, the sweeping poll results came on his wife’s birthday. “My family also supported me. It is my wife’s birthday. I had cake, you will also get it,” Kejriwal said. “People elected us with high hopes. I cannot do it alone, we all have to work together,” he added.

Kejriwal told the capital’s citizens “I love you” in his expression of thanks for the overwhelming mandate. He said it was not just his victory but a victory for everybody.

“Delhi has given the message that they will vote for those who will provide schools, cheap electricity and hospitals. This is a new kind of politics, the politics of work. It is a new and good sign for the nation,” Kejriwal said

The AAP’s moment of glory comes nearly eight months after it suffered a severe drubbing in the Lok Sabha polls in which the party drew a blank while the BJP won all the seven seats.

Some of the AAP heavyweights won nail-biters. They included Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, Raghav Chaddha and Atishi. Delhi cabinet ministers Gopal Rai and Satyender Jain were other prominent winners.

Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal was leading in New Delhi constituency by over 17,000 votes against his BJP rival Sunil Kumar Yadav.

The elections in the national capital took place in the midst of massive protests in the city and elsewhere over the new citizenship law, an issue which was strongly raised by the BJP top leadership during the campaigning which often turned bitter and vitriolic.

The political opponents of the BJP accused the saffron party of carrying out a “divisive” campaign to polarise the voters by consistently highlighting the over 50-day demonstration by a group of women in Shaheen Bagh area.

Though the BJP’s campaign focused on national security issues, the AAP concentrated mainly on its achievements in the fields of education, healthcare and infrastructure.

The AAP had registered a sensational victory in 2015 by winning 67 seats in a hurricane march that almost wiped out the BJP and the Congress.

“We have been saying since the beginning that the upcoming polls will be fought on the basis of work done by us. You wait and watch, we will register a massive win,” AAP spokesperson Sanjay Singh told reporters.

“We hope we get such a clear majority that a message goes out that doing Hindu-Muslim politics will not work anymore,” said AAP volunteer Fareen Khan at the party office.

After he was declared winner from the Patparganj seat, Sisodia said the BJP indulged in “politics of hate”, but people refused its agenda.

“The BJP indulged in politics of hate, but I thank the people of Patparganj. Delhi’s people have chosen a government that works for them and explained the true meaning of nationalism through their mandate,” he told reporters.

The AAP headquarters were decorated with blue and white balloons and big banners with pictures of Kejriwal.

The Congress accepted defeat and vowed to rebuild and revive itself at the grassroots level in the city.

It said the poll results also had a message for the BJP that the “most toxic campaign” unleashed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah has been defeated.

As it happened: It’s AAP ki apni Delhi again!

“People’s mandate is against us, we accept it. We have resolved to revive and rebuild the party,” Congress’ chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said at a press conference.

A total of 672 candidates, including 593 men and 79 women, were in the fray for the hotly contested elections.

Their fates were decided in counting centres across 21 locations in 11 districts, including at the CWG Sports Complex in east Delhi, NSIT Dwarka in west Delhi, Meerabai Institute of Technology and G B Pant Institute of Technology in southeast Delhi, Sir CV Raman ITI, Dheerpur in central Delhi, and Rajiv Gandhi Stadium in Bawana in north Delhi.

While Kejriwal was the star campaigner for the AAP, Prime Minister Modi, Shah and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath were among those who extensively campaigned for the BJP.

The Congress got into campaign mode much later. Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and party leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi were among those who campaigned for the Congress.

Jarkiholi gets his wish, but colleague sore

February 11, 2020 by Nasheman

In a bid to pacify Athani MLA Mahesh Kumathalli, Yeddyurappa appointed him chairman of Mysore Sales International Limited (MSIL).

BENGALURU: Three days after they were sworn into the BS Yediyurappa Cabinet, the 10 new ministers were allotted portfolios on Monday. Chief Minister Yediyurappa seems to have carefully distributed the ministries, not just to avoid disgruntlement within the cabinet, but also to keep hopes of other aspirants alive by retaining a few key portfolios.

The biggest takeaways from Monday’s portfolio allocation were Yediyurappa’s decision to continue keeping the sought-after Bengaluru Development ministry with him, Ramesh Jarkiholi being given the big-ticket Water Resources ministry and Deputy Chief Minister Laxman Savadi losing Agriculture, a portfolio that he held additionally, to Home Minister Basavaraj Bommai. The attempt at balancing the portfolio allocation, however, still managed to anger a newly-inducted minister who is now contemplating approaching the BJP central leadership.

After many rounds of talks, Ramesh Jarkiholi got his wish to hold the portfolio that was previously held by Congress’D K Shivakumar.

Party sources said the ministry was promised to Jarkiholi even before he joined the BJP.Fully aware of the implications that would follow the allocation of the coveted Bengaluru Development ministry to any of the ministers from the city barely months before the BBMP elections, Yediyurappa chose to retain it with himself. With six more berths to be filled, Yediyurappa has the daunting task of keeping party loyalists hopeful and has retained high-profile portfolios like Energy and Finance too with him. To stall dissent, the CM has also conveyed his plans of dropping a few ministers soon to accommodate more aspirants.

In a bid to pacify Athani MLA Mahesh Kumathalli, Yediyurappa appointed him chairman of Mysore Sales International Limited (MSIL). While the legislator, a close aide of Ramesh Jarkiholi, is miffed over being the only turncoat not to have made it to the cabinet despite winning his seat, unlike A H Vishwanath and MTB Nagaraj, Yediyurappa is hopeful that the appointment will help quell disgruntlement.

While there is no rejig of any incumbent minister’s core portfolio, ministries that were being held as additional charge have been distributed to the new entrants. With the State Budget barely weeks away, the new ministers have their tasks cut out.

“I am 200% happy with my portfolio. I will hold meetings with officials at the earliest and chart out my next course of action. I will also take help from Suresh Kumar who had been holding the portfolio previously. There’s nothing wrong in taking his advice and guidance, he is a senior minister,” said Labour Minister Shivaram Hebbar when asked about his preparedness for the budget, given the time constraints.

Despite Yediyurappa’s attempts to please all, rumblings have already begun within the cabinet with one new minister hoping to approach the BJP top brass with his complaint. Chikkaballapur MLA Dr K Sudhakar is said to be unhappy with his Medical Education portfolio. Sources close to the minister said he is contemplating approaching the BJP central leadership over Yediyurappa not ‘honouring his commitment’.

“Among all those who switched to the BJP, Ramesh Jarkiholi and Sudhakar were the only ones who were assured of specific ministries. Ramesh was promised Water Resources and Sudhakar was promised Energy. The commitment made to Sudhakar has not been kept,” said the source.

Sudhakar said the portfolio had been given to him considering his educational qualifications. “We can’t choose — whether to become a minister or pick a portfolio. That is the prerogative of the CM. This wasn’t the portfolio I had anticipated but the CM seems to have seen only my educational qualification. Let us see,” Sudhakar said.

No information on any group called ‘Tukde Tukde Gang’: Govt

February 11, 2020 by Nasheman

No information on any group called 'Tukde Tukde Gang': Govt

New Delhi: The Home Ministry on Tuesday said it has no information on any group called the ‘Tukde Tukde Gang’.

Replying to a written question in Lok Sabha, Minister of State for Home G Kishan Reddy said the ministry has no information on whether the terminology ‘Tukde Tukde Gang’ is based on specific inputs provided by law enforcement agencies.

“No such information has been brought to the notice of the government by any law enforcement agency,” he said.

The reply came in response to questions by Congress members Vincent H Pala and Jasbir Singh Gill.

The questions included whether an organisation called the ‘Tukde Tukde Gang’ has been identified and catalogued by the Home Ministry or any central/state law enforcement agency, whether the terminology ‘Tukde Tukde Gang’ is based on specific inputs and whether the ministry or intelligence agency has drawn up a list of alleged leaders and members of the ‘Tukde Tukde Gang’.
