‘Free Kashmir’ placard row: Advocates come forward to assist Nalini Balakumar

January 18, 2020 by Nasheman

This comes after Bar announced its members would not appear for her, as she displayed a ‘Free Kashmir’ placard

MYSURU: A few days after Mysuru Bar Association made an announcement that none of its members would appear for Nalini Balakumar, who is facing sedition charges for holding a ‘Free Kashmir’ placard during a protest at the University of Mysore recently, support has begun pouring in for the beleaguered woman and other students from several advocates.

In a statement, senior advocates from across the state said that they are ready to represent Nalini and other students who are booked in the case, and help them by providing necessary legal assistance. Offering to appear in court to represent Nalini and the other students who are booked under IPC sections 34 and 124A (sedition), the advocates stated: “Every person has the fundamental and constitutional right to be represented in a court of law.”

“As senior advocates, we are ready to represent the accused in court and provide her necessary legal assistance. So, students are requested not to worry and concentrate on their academics,” the statement says, undersigned by senior advocates CS Dwarakanath, S Shankarappa, KN Jagadeesh Mahadevu, BT Venkatesh, JD Kashinath, Srinivasa Kumar and R Jagannatha, among others. On Wednesday, a group of advocates from Bengaluru issued a statement calling the Mysuru Bar Association’s decision a blatant attack on the ideals of the Constitution.

SDPI, PFI may face ban for ‘planning attacks’

January 18, 2020 by Nasheman

Bommai says organisations plotting to eliminate BJP leaders; BSY to lead delegation to Delhi to seek ban

BENGALURU: The Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI), People’s Front of India (PFI) and a few other similar organizations may soon be banned, Home Minister Basavaraj Bommai and Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister JC Madhuswamy told the media after the cabinet meeting on Friday. They said the issue was discussed in the cabinet and some stern action is being considered against these “extreme outfits”.

This statement comes after information that the organisations were seeking to eliminate some known names in the BJP like Bangalore South MP Tejasvi Surya and Chakravarti Sulibele of Yuva Brigade, a sister outfit of the BJP.   Home Minister Basavaraj Bommai said, “Many of them are known violators, they have planned and executed murders, unrest and terror activities over a period of time, and much has been documented.’’ Many have been arrested in previous cases and questioned, and the government has a lot of information on their activities which will all be provided to central government and other agencies, Bommai said. There have been murders, terror activities, planning and conspiracy in Bengaluru, Mangaluru, Mysuru and other places also.

This is the third time the government is reiterating that it is seeking to ban these organisations. It may be recalled that the first time was following the attack on Congress MLA Tanveer Sait in Mysuru, when the government had stated that it would consider a ban on the PFI. Cabinet Minister R Ashoka had said they would go ahead with banning the SDPI and Karnataka Forum for Dignity.

The second time the ban was mentioned was after the protests in Mangaluru, when the government again considered the issue of banning SDPI and PFI, where protests saw two deaths due to police firing. Minister Suresh Kumar had said that “both organisations instigate violence and disturb peace in society. Both need to be banned’’.

SDPI state secretary Akram Hassan said, “There is no basis for banning any political party. We are a registered political party functioning under the Constitution. We have won more than 20 seats in municipal and other elections across the state. We are a 10-year-old party, and from day one, they have tried to ban our party, questioning our existence.’’

Earlier in the day, Health Minister B Sriramulu told reporters that a delegation headed by Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa will soon go to Delhi to meet Home Ministry officials, demanding a ban on these organisations. “I will also be part of it and meet the officials concerned next month to submit the memorandum,” he said.Police said that those who attacked a BJP worker for taking part in a pro-CAA demonstration were planning to target many senior  leaders, including Bangalore South MP Tejasvi Surya. “I have more trust on God. There is talk of giving security to people like us, what about people who work on the ground. Our worker Varun was attacked, who will give security to them? People who work for country cannot be seen holding a gun or seen with a gunman. If this is seen, it is nothing but destroying the very purpose of democracy,” the MP said.

Industry Minister Jagadish Shettar said the SDPI always denies its involvement in such activities but it has been proved now. The organisation should be banned as the members have always been involved in anti-social activities and the Union government should take very serious note of this, he said.

Asha workers to get one-time settlement
The strike by thousands of ASHA (Accredited Social Health Activists) workers seems to have succeeded in garnering the attention of the state government.  Although the government has not fulfilled all their demands, it has offered them a one-time settlement of Rs 3,000 each to the 41,000 Asha workers and said it will look into their other demands.  Minister J C Madhuswamy, who announced it after the cabinet meeting on Friday, the state government will incur an additional burden of Rs 12.5 crore to meet the one-time settlement.  ASHA workers had staged a massive protest soon after the New Year after all the deadlines they had given the government expired at the end of last year. The offer came in about a fortnight after the protest began.

‘No need for CBI or ED probe in irrigation scam’: Ajit Pawar files affidavit in court

January 15, 2020 by Nasheman

It was alleged that Pawar, then VIDC chairman, and officials of the corporation colluded with contractors while issuing tenders for projects, causing a loss to the exchequer.

Ajit pawar

NAGPUR: Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar has filed an affidavit in the Nagpur Bench of Bombay High Court in reply to petitions against him in the multi-crore irrigation scam, terming the allegations as “mala fide”.

The NCP leader also said in the affidavit filed on Tuesday that there is no requirement for the present investigation to be handed over to the CBI or the ED.

The Director-General of the Maharashtra Anti-Corruption Bureau in an affidavit filed in the High Court in December last year had stated the ACB’s inquiry found no involvement of Pawar in the alleged scam in the 12 projects undertaken by the Vidarbha Irrigation Development Corporation (VIDC).

It was alleged that Pawar, then VIDC chairman, and officials of the corporation colluded with contractors while issuing tenders for projects, causing a loss to the exchequer.

The petitioner, Atul Jagtap of Janmanch who has filed 4 PILs in the alleged scam, had filed an application in the HC seeking CBI enquiry into the matter.

The hearing of which is still going in the court and the next hearing is scheduled this week.

On Tuesday, Pawar, in his reply, said the present affidavit is a common reply to the present civil application (Jagtap) and similar other applications which are identical in nature.

“I raise an objection regarding locus standi of Jagtap and maintainability of the present applications as the petitioner has no locus to make the prayers as contained in the said applications. The four PILs filed by Jagtap are not maintainable in as much as Jagtap is himself a contractor and filed tenders in respect of various projects which were involved in the present alleged.

“The present civil applications may not be entertained by the HC as they are actuated by personal motives mala fide intentions, business rivalry or not in the nature of public interest,” he said.

“I deny all allegations concerning me or imputing me in toto. I say that I have not indulged in any corrupt, motivated or mala fide act while discharging my duties as a minister. I state that I have as a minister or as ex-officio chairman of the VIDC, have followed all the rules and have discharged my public duties with a clear conscience and without fear, favour or illegal motives,” Pawar said in the affidavit.

“I further deny the contention that the present investigation is required to be handed over to the CBI or the Enforcement Directorate and state there is not even a farthing of either pleadings or evidence to show the exceptional case as to why the investigation requires to be transferred and for statements and averments made in such vague and careless manners, the prayers made in application deserve to be rejected,” Pawar stated.

The hearing on the present application by petitioner Jagtap is expected this week.

5,000 feral camels culled in drought-hit Australia

January 15, 2020 by Nasheman

The cull came as Australia experienced its hottest and driest year on record in 2019, with the severe drought causing some towns to run out of water and fuelling deadly bushfires.

Feral camels

SYDNEY: Helicopter-borne marksmen killed more than 5,000 camels in a five-day cull of feral herds that were threatening indigenous communities in drought-stricken areas of southern Australia, officials said Tuesday.

Aboriginal leaders in South Australia state said extremely large herds of the non-native camels had been driven towards rural communities by drought and extreme heat, threatening scarce food and drinking water, damaging infrastructure, and creating a dangerous hazard for drivers.

The cull in the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands — home to about 2,300 indigenous people in the arid northwest of South Australia — ended on Sunday, said APY general manager Richard King.

“We appreciate the concerns of animal rights activists, but there is significant misinformation about the realities of life for non-native feral animals, in what is among the most arid and remote places on Earth,” King said in a statement on Tuesday.

“As custodians of the land, we need to deal with an introduced pest in a way that protects valuable water supplies for communities and puts the lives of everyone, including our young children, the elderly, and native flora and fauna first.

” King said weakened camels frequently became stuck and died in water holes, contaminating water sources needed by locals and native animals and birds.

“The prolonged dry period, while not difficult for native wildlife, leads to extreme distress for feral camels,” he said.

APY officials said the operation had removed more than 5,000 camels.

The cull came as Australia experienced its hottest and driest year on record in 2019, with the severe drought causing some towns to run out of water and fuelling deadly bushfires that have devastated the country’s southeast.

Camels were first introduced to Australia in the 1840s to aid in the exploration of the continent’s vast interior, with up to 20,000 imported from India in the six decades that followed.

Australia is now thought to have the largest wild camel population in the world, with official estimates suggesting more than one million are roaming the country’s inland deserts.

The animals are considered a pest, as they foul water sources and trample native flora while foraging for food over vast distances each day.

Traditional owners in the APY Lands have for years mustered and sold off feral camels.

But more recently they have “been unable to manage the scale and number of camels that congregate in dry conditions”, according to the environment department.

Amid protests, 800 families donate Rs 1 lakh each for 114-foot tall Jesus statue in Karnataka

January 15, 2020 by Nasheman

KAPALA BETTA, KANAKAPURA (RAMANAGARA DISTRICT): Anthoniyamma Mary flips the pages of the Bible which according to her is more than 100 years old.

“He (Jesus) has given us everything and it is our turn to give him back. It is mentioned in the book. We were told during Sunday prayers to give Rs 1 lakh for the construction of the tallest Jesus statue. I am happy contributing to it.”

With pro-Hindu organisations opposing the construction of the statue, local residents seem to be determined to go ahead with it.

There are 800 houses in villages near Kapala Betta. Christians are in majority here. Each house is contributing Rs 1 lakh for the 114-foot tall statue.

Many of these families largely depend on sericulture.

Anthoniyamma and her husband stay at Jyothinagar which is close to Kapala Betta. They work as coolies in sericulture farms for their bread and butter. They also own a couple of sheep.

“We were told to contribute for the statue. Every month, we save a little money and pay at the church. When we ran short of money one month, we even auctioned our calf (goat) for Rs 6,000. We paid this amount to the church as part of our contribution,” she said.

According to the villagers, they offer prayers to the Cross on the hilltop. Now, they have symbolically placed a  five-foot-tall statue of Jesus Christ on a platform there.

The tallest statue will come up nearby for which Congress leader DK Shivakumar laid the foundation stone last month.

Lewis and Mary, another couple who are also sericulture workers, have four children. They too have committed to pay the money for the statue.

Asked how they will raise such a huge amount, Mary said, “If I need money for my children’s education or marriage, I will take a loan. Paying Rs 1 lakh to the church is my responsibility and I will do it by taking a loan.”

Lily Mary, who is married to a farmer and lives in Sipayi Doddi, has a special connection with  Kapala Betta.

“My daughter was about to deliver a baby. Doctors in Bengaluru said they could save either the mother or the baby. We went to the hilltop and prayed. Now, my granddaughter is five years old. Both mother and daughter are healthy. I have been saving money every month for the statue. We are happy that it is coming up in our place.’’

You will find a sprinkling of Hindus here. They too offer prayers at Kapala Betta –  like Ramu and his son-in-law Krishna, residents of DK Nagar (named after Congress leaders DK Shivakumar and his brother DK Suresh who constructed 40 houses free of cost).

“We have no issues with the Christ statue coming up here. We were neither told to convert nor contribute,” said Krishna.

Many villagers told TNIE that they only want land and are not asking for money from the government.

Susheelamma from Kadledoddi said, “There is no Shiva temple here as claimed by a political party. Even Hindus visit and they do not have a problem.”

But a few Hindus did object.

Bogesh (name changed) said, “We are minorities here. Our children will get influenced by Christianity. We cannot leave this place, we were born and brought up here. There are some Hindu temples which are in a bad state. Why isn’t anyone bothering to get them repaired,” he asked.

Aaron Finch, David Warner smash centuries as Australia thrash India by 10 wickets in 1st ODI

January 15, 2020 by Nasheman

Chasing 256 for win, Finch (110 not out) and Warner (128 not out) took the Indian bowlers to the cleaners to register the emphatic win with 74 balls to spare and take a 1-0 lead in the series.

MUMBAI: Australia openers David Warner and Aaron Finch’s record opening stand flattened the Indian attack on Tuesday as the visitors won the first ODI at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai by 10 wickets. Both batsmen scored centuries as Australia chased down a target of 256 without losing a wicket.

This is only the second time that India have lost an ODI at home by 10 wickets and the first instance since 2005. Warner and Finch also bettered their own record for the highest ever opening stand for Australia against India.

Warner was given out for caught behind in the sixth over when he chased a short ball down the leg side. He reviewed after a lengthy chat with Finch and the snicko showed no spike as the ball passed the bat.

Australia then raced to 110/0 in 15 overs with Warning crossing his fifty. Finch made his half-century in the 16th over as the pair settled into the chase. They slowed the run rate and played a largely chanceless innings with India not helping their case with lapses in the field.

India’s next real chance came in the 29th over when Warner was given LBW off Ravindra Jadeja. This time, however, the 33-year-old reviewed straightaway and replays showed that the ball had taken his inside edge before hitting the pads. Warner scored his 18th ODI hundred two overs later and the four that he hit to get there also helped Australia cross the 200-run mark.

Finch also reached his 16th ODI century in the 35th over with a four and in the next over, they set the record for highest opening stand for Australia against India. The previous record also belonged to the pair, which they had set in Bengaluru in 2017. In the 38th over, Warner hit Mohammed Shami for a four past mid-off which were the winning runs for the visitors.

Warner ended the innings on 128 while Finch was on 110.

Earlier, India lost their first wicket early in Rohit Sharma, who was the first to fall to Mitchell Starc. But then Shikhar Dhawan and KL Rahul seemingly got India back on track with a 121-run partnership for the second wicket. Rahul fell three runs short of his half-century to break the partnership in the 28th over after which India lost captain Virat Kohli, who came in at number four instead of his usual three, and Shreyas Iyer in quick succession.

Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja temporarily put a stop to the fall of wickets but scorecard pressure eventually caught up with them. They put on 49 runs for the fifth wicket before Jadeja was caught behind off Kane Richardson. Pant fell in the next over to Pat Cummins after which it was all downhill for India. Pant got a top edge off the short ball bowled by Cummins which hit his helmet before flying to point where Ashton Turner took the catch. He ended up suffering a concussion because of which Rahul kept wickets in his place during the Australian innings.

Brief scores:

India 255 all out in 49.1 overs (Shikhar Dhawan 74, KL Rahul 47; Mitchell Starc 3/56) vs Australia 258/0 (David Warner 128, Aaron Finch 110; Ravindra Jadeja 0/41)

‘Davinder Singh was not awarded gallantry medal’

January 15, 2020 by Nasheman

After media reports claimed that Singh was awarded a police medal on Independence Day last year.

SRI NAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir Police on Tuesday said reports claiming that suspended officer Davinder Singh, who was arrested along with two Hizbul Mujahideen terrorists, was awarded a gallantry medal by the Union Home Ministry are not true even as the intelligence agencies continued to grill him to know if he was planning to ensure Hizbul deputy chief Naveed Babu’s escape to Pakistan.

“During the investigation, it has been found that Singh was to take Naveed Babu and another militant to Chandigarh,” sources said. The interrogators are trying to ascertain if Singh intended to ensure the militants’ escape to Pakistan or “he was to drop them at someplace for carrying out an attack”. Sources said the officials were analysing the former DSP’s bank accounts and ascertaining his assets.

After media reports claimed that Singh was awarded a police medal on Independence Day last year.
The J&K Police said, “It is to clarify that Dysp Davinder Singh is not awarded any Gallantry or Meritorious Medal by MHA (Ministry of Home Affairs) as has been reported by some media outlets/persons. Only gallantry medal awarded to him during his service is by the erstwhile J&K State on Independence Day 2018.”

Tagging Singh as a “black sheep”, J&K LG G C Murmu’s Advisor Farooq Khan said the credit for identifying and nabbing him goes to the police. “In any organisation, there is a black sheep and he was the one in the police,” Khan said. Responding to a question about the impact of Singh’s arrest on the image of the police force, Khan pointed out that even the people who nabbed the DySP were policemen.

Saffron rally against Jesus statue, DKS says let them do what they want

January 14, 2020 by Nasheman

Reacting to the rally, Shivakumar said that BJP is in power, so let them do what they want.

BENGALURU: Thousands of BJP, RSS and VHP workers took part in ‘Kanakapura Chalo’ — a protest rally against the proposed 114-foot Jesus Christ statue in Kapali Betta. Kanakapura assembly segment is represented by former Congress minister  DK Shivakumar, who had laid the foundation for the statue on December 25.

The rally began from Ayyappa Swamy Temple and concluded with a public meeting at Channabasappa Circle in Kanakapura. Senior RSS leader Kalladka Prabhakar Bhat, who was leading the rally, addressed the gathering, claiming the people living in and around Kapali hill do not want the statue. “Why Jesus statue? Why cannot we erect a statue of Basavanna or Vishveshatheertha of Pejawar mutt or Balagangadharanatha Swamiji, who has contributed to the nation?’’ Bhat questioned. He blamed Shivakumar for going ahead with the plan just to please his party high command Sonia Gandhi.

Meanwhile, senior BJP leader and former MLC Ashwath Narayan Gowda alleged that forced conversions are happening and that the brothers (Shivakumar and DK Suresh) are supporting this, which is unfortunate. “Kapali Betta was worshipped by Hindus, by erecting a Jesus Christ statue here, they are trying to break the harmony,’’ he alleged.

Reacting to the rally, Shivakumar said that BJP is in power, so let them do what they want. “I do not know who Kalladka Prabhakar is. I believe in humanity. In a democracy, there is a ruling party and an opposition. Anyone can come to Kanakapura, any leader or minister. We welcome them,” said Shivakumar. BJP leaders are alleging that this land is a gomala (grazing land) and belongs to the government, while Shivakumar is making it privatized.

Cops detain MLA Zameer ahead of protest in Ballari

January 14, 2020 by Nasheman

BALLARI: The police detained Congress MLA Zameer Ahmed Khan and his followers while they were on their way to the residence of Ballari MLA G Somashekara Reddy. Khan was in Ballari on Monday to stage a protest against an alleged hate speech by Reddy. They were taken to Kuditini police station and later released.

Recently, during a pro-CCA rally held in the city, Reddy had made provocative statements against the Muslim community. A police case was filed against Reddy over his remarks, after which Khan said he would stage a protest at Reddy’s residence.

Addressing a rally, Khan had charged that the BJP and RSS were targeting minorities and that issuing warnings for anti-CAA protests was undemocratic. “Keep in mind that we are Indian Muslims, we want to live like brothers in India,” he had said.

Further, he said that no action has been taken Reddy yet, giving the police a ten-day deadline to arrest him. Ballari SP C K Baba said that as police had denied permission to Khan to protest, he was detained 5 kms outside the city. “We released him and he returned to Bengaluru later, Baba added.
