Karnataka State Cricket Association is being belittled by some of its own office-bearers

Political Interference

AvoidableIgnominy

By Joseph hoover

According to reports, a couple of office-bearers have been running from pillar to post, prostrating at the feet of politicians to save themselves from the possibility of being arrested by the Central Crime Branch.

In their desperation to save themselves from the ignominy of being arrested for their alleged involvement in the KPL match-fixing scandal, they have exposed themselves to the elements of doubt and guilt.

If they had conviction about their innocence, they wouldn’t have to plead for mercy. They could have steadfastly held their head up high and discarded any lingering doubts about their unholy alliance with corrupt cricketers and franchise owners .

They have sought the help of political stalwarts from the BJP, which came to power with the pledge to incinerate the corrupt, and Congress. But this isn’t going to bail anyone out of trouble.

KSCA secretary Santosh Menon’s house was raided a fortnight ago by the CCB. The CCB had availed a search warrant from the court.

It is common knowledge that no government department/ agency would raid someone’s house without evidence. No judge would issue a search warrant without clinching/corroborative evidence.

It is public knowledge that a very senior IPS officer had saved Santosh Menon from being arrested.

Menon has been asked to report to the CCB headquarters for frequent interrogation.

KSCA, Karnataka cricket and Santosh Menon could have been saved this embarrassment had the KPL governing council, chaired by Vinay Mruthunjaya, had acted on the match-fixing complaints of Sreenath Arvind and Balchander Akhil in 2017. They had briefed the then office-bearers about matches being fixed. But KSCA threw caution to the wind.

The reluctance to take action is now hurting KSCA’s reputation, Karnataka cricket and genuine cricketers.

Instead of threatening others with defamation suits, the present managing committee would do well to reprimand office-bearers who have heaped embarrassment on what was once the best administered cricket association in India.

The least the managing committee could do is to ask those who are being investigated to stay away from the affairs of the cricket association, until they are given a clean chit by the Special Investigation Team, put together by Police Commissioner Bhaskar Rao to cleanse Karnataka cricket.

Opposition should show magnanimity, allow MVA government to function: Shiv Sena

December 31, 2019 by Nasheman

Shiv Sena said in an editorial in party mouthpiece ‘Saamna’ that it is unfortunate that Fadnavis decided to boycott the swearing-in of the council of ministers.

Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray

MUMBAI: A day after the BJP skipped the Uddhav Thackeray-led ministry’s expansion ceremony, the Shiv Sena on Tuesday slammed its former ally for constantly hitting out at the fledgling Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi alliance government “just for the sake of opposing”.

The Shiv Sena said now that the state has a “full government”, the opposition should show magnanimity by allowing the Thackeray-led dispensation to function.

By unnecessarily targeting the Thackeray government from day one, former state chief minister Devendra Fadnavis and the opposition BJP have made a “mockery of themselves” in the eyes of the people, it said in sarcastic remarks.

“Now after a month, the state has a full government of 43 ministers and Fadnavis should not try to bring bad omen. Fadnavis and his party should not try to oppose the government just for the sake of opposing,” the Sena said in an editorial in party mouthpiece ‘Saamana’.

Monday’s expansion, which raised the strength of the state ministry to 43, came over a month after the Thackeray- led Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government came to power.

The chief minister expanded his Cabinet by inducting 36 ministers, including his son Aaditya Thackeray and some Gen-next leaders from political families, while NCP’s Ajit Pawar made a comeback as deputy CM.

The Marathi daily said the council of ministers has the capability of expediting the development of the state.

It is unfortunate that Fadnavis decided to boycott the swearing-in of the council of ministers.

Even in the winter session of the state legislature in Nagpur, the opposition created pandemonium and staged walkouts, it said.

“Now, the state has a full government. The opposition should show the magnanimity of allowing the government to function,” the Thackeray-led party said.

The BJP earlier this month boycotted the MVA government’s tea party on the eve of the winter session in Nagpur, and on Monday skipped the ministry expansion ceremony.

The Shiv Sena last month joined hands with the Congress and NCP, its traditional adversaries, after its alliance with the BJP collapsed over the issue of sharing the chief ministerial post.

On November 28, six minsters, two each of the Congress, NCP and Shiv Sena took oath along with Thackeray.

The Sena said in the last one month, the six-member ministry successfully handled the winter session of the state legislature and took important decisions like farm loan waiver and meal at Rs 10 for poor people.

“When the country was facing unrest due to protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act, the six-member ministry kept the state calm,” the Marathi publication said.

It also said that due to the induction of Sena allies like Bachchu Kadu (of Prahar Janshakti Party), Shankarrao Gadakh (Krantikari Shetkari Paksh) and Rajendra Yedravkar (Independent), many Shiv Sainiks could not make it to the ministry.

Apart from the opposition BJP, Sena MP Sanjay Raut also skipped the ministry expansion ceremony on Monday.

Raut’s absence was attributed to his brother Sunil Raut, a Sena MLA, not getting a ministerial berth.

Referring to the induction of the chief minister’s son and first-term MLA Aaditya Thackeray into the Cabinet, the Sena said he had plans for sectors like education, health, sports, tourism and environment, and now has the opportunity to work as minister.

Will it be third time lucky for BBMP standing committee elections?

December 30, 2019 by Nasheman

BBMP officials said that the three-day mourning for Pejawar Swamiji’s death will not affect the elections

Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) office in Bengaluru

BENGALURU: Will the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike’s (BBMP) 12 Standing Committee elections happen on Monday or not? If BBMP sources are to be believed, the answer is, 80 percent ‘no’.This is because, so far, no party-wise meetings have been conducted and no names have been discussed too.

BBMP officials said that the three-day mourning for Pejawar Swamiji’s death will not affect the elections. The absence of BBMP Regional Commissioner Harsha Gupta, will also have no effect as Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board Chairman, Tushar Girinath, is holding additional charge.

“There have been no meetings and no mention of names too. None of the councilors visit the BBMP head office. If the elections aren’t held even this time, then it will be the third time in a row and the first time in the history of BBMP. Looking at the present condition, 80 per cent chances are that elections will get cancelled and postponed once again,” a BBMP source said.

To ensure that elections are held, at least 11 nominations must be filed for the 12 posts. There are 198 councilors and filing of nominations is from 8.30 am to 9.30 am.

Hence, if till 9.30 am, the minimum nominations are not filed, then the elections will get postponed once again.

The first time, they were postponed was when the Mayor and Deputy Mayor elections were held. The second time, they were postponed on December 4, just ahead of the bypolls, when not even one candidate filed a nomination. The 12 standing committees are Taxation and Finance, Town Planning and Improvement, Public Health, Major Public Works, Ward Level Works, Education, Appeals, Accounts, Social Justice and Welfare, Horticulture, Markets and Establishments and Administrative Reforms and their term ended on December 4.

Virat Kohli keeps the team india flag flying high

December 30, 2019 by Nasheman

If Gavaskar & Tendulkar happened to be the best of their times, India skipper is now stamping his authority and on course to become nation’s greatest of this era

Comparisons, especially when made across multiple time lines, can be an engaging exercise in futility. They rekindle pleasant memories but achieve no concrete result. India has been playing international cricket for almost nine decades and a century is round the corner. It has never been in such good health, its financial strength having finally translated into producing a world-beating team that is led by someone who could well be a contender for the tag of India’s greatest batsman ever.

As another decade is consigned to the dustbin of history and we look forward to greater prosperity in India’s cricketing growth, Virat Kohli has emerged as that unbreakable fulcrum around which the team revolves and reaps rewards of unprecedented success. His steely resolve and an inexhaustible desire for excellence has resulted in the transformation of a talented cricketer into a vast reservoir of unimaginable depth, who can now challenge the past legends to the tag of greatest ever.

For those of us who watched cricket in the pre-Sachin Tendulkar era, Sunil Gavaskar was the ultimate word in batting perfection. He took on the menacing greyhounds of the West Indian attack with the calmness of a meditating monk and wore them down with his textbook technique and unlimited patience. For a team struggling to stay afloat most of the time, Gavaskar’s batting feats were an exceptional example of courage and skill, achieved against the greatest of odds in hostile conditions that would be hard to match, leave alone surpass.

When we were convinced that the world had seen the final picture of perfection, a chubby little boy entered our consciousness with a volcanic force and stamped his greatness even before he had crossed his teens. Just like a mythical character whose future is predicted even before he is born, Tendulkar’s phenomenal march to the “greatest ever” was foreseen even before he had played for India.

As time passed and Tendulkar overshadowed everything around him, Gavaskar started fading from memory. Tendulkar now was a new era Bradman, surpassing not just all batting records, but outliving most of his contemporaries. An ageless wonder who could go on and on, playing and making runs.
It was a rude awakening for his millions of fans that even the best are subject to the laws of nature and there is nothing permanent in this world, not even Tendulkar! Around the same time the “god” of Indian cricket was quitting centre stage, an errant boy with rich promise was making his way into the Indian team. This young man, bursting with uncontrollable energy, had led India to an Under-19 World Cup win and many feared his untamed energies more than his talent.

When and how Kohli channelized his “human” instincts into a more positive direction is a story in itself and best left for him to tell someday. What it achieved for him was a metamorphosis that had a profound impact on his cricket. Kohli is a perfect example of what a disciplined life can lead to, especially for sportspersons who depend too much on body strength. The party animal now became a gym addict and a diet-conscious athlete who was willing to go to extreme lengths to enhance his skills.

The remarkable aspect of Kohli’s transformation from one among many to the only one among many, is his phenomenal concentration while batting, a la Gavaskar, without losing his restless, anxious persona while leading his troops in the field. While his batting has multiple dimensions, self-belief being perhaps its most stand-out feature, his explosive temper, though muted and controlled now, lends him a distinct aura that Gavaskar and especially Tendulkar lacked.

He is this very strange phenomenon, who is robotic when it comes to adhering to the discipline and training to improve his craft and very human when it comes to displaying his emotions. There is so far that “unbreakable will” on display that combines so perfectly with his skills to have made him into a run-making machine.

Is he the greatest? No. For the generation I belong to, there can be no one better than Gavaskar. He took on the world, fighting alone, scoring runs in a heap and lending a defeated team dignity and respect.
For the later generation Tendulkar is peerless, a symbol of India’s march into a world which finally took note of India’s strength and power. Can Kohli replace Tendulkar in popular imagination or has he already done so? These are questions that can have no one answer, as the very nature of comparisons across different periods are subject to and limited by the time and place of the present moment we live in.

Brotherhood slogan made him Hindu icon

December 30, 2019 by Nasheman

The seer catapulted to the national scene in the early 1960s when then RSS Sarsanghchalak M S Golwalkar and Swami Chinmayanand sought his advice for the establishment of Vishwa Hindu Parishad

UDUPI: Pejawar seer, who came from Udupi, a small town, made his way to the national scene over a half a century ago, became an icon of Hindu religion and played a significant role in all the major movements related to Hinduism.

The seer catapulted to the national scene in the early 1960s when then RSS Sarsanghchalak M S Golwalkar and Swami Chinmayanand sought his advice for the establishment of Vishwa Hindu Parishad. Incidentally, he was the last founding member of VHP to pass away.

The first time he was known all over the country was in 1968 with his slogan at the regional conference of VHP  held in Ujire of Dakshina Kannada. The slogan “All Hindus are brothers, my job is to protect Hindus and no Hindu should remain backward” reverberated across the country after it made to the cover pages of most of the newspapers across the country. “Because of this, the scope of his influence spread and also respect from people. It was because of this reason that though he wrote two letters to then PM Indira Gandhi condemning the imposition of national emergency, she did not dare to touch him,” said Vasudev Bhat, the seer’s disciple.

Unlike other seers, the Pejawar seer had the great ability to reach out to people without being confined to the restrictions followed by religious leaders. He played a major role in bringing different Hindu sects and also seers and religious leaders under one banner to fight for the protection of Hindu religion. Some of the major movements in which he was actively involved were related to cow protection, anti-conversion, protection of Rama Setu, Save Tirupati, Ram Janmabhoomi, eradicating untouchability etc.
Whenever he sensed threat to the Hindu culture, he was among the first to protest it besides guiding the community in the right direction. His words carried weight because of the huge respect he would command from his sea of followers.

PDP reiterates demand for release of detained political leaders in J&K

December 30, 2019 by Nasheman

PDP leader Surinder Choudhary underscored the need for releasing the incarcerated political leaders of Jammu and Kashmir.

Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Ministers Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti

JAMMU: The PDP reiterated its demand for the release of Jammu and Kashmir’s political leaders on Sunday while asserting that the prevalent situation in the region was undermining the very idea of democracy.

It also said the current situation was bringing back the memories of the Emergency days.

“For peace to prevail, the government has to shun its proverbial ostrich approach and ascertain the situation, which is grim and worrisome,” People’s Democratic Party (PDP) general secretary and former MLC Surinder Choudhary said.

Addressing a meeting at the party head office here, he underscored the need for releasing the incarcerated political leaders of Jammu and Kashmir.

The meeting discussed the prevailing political situation in Jammu and Kashmir and also took stock of the arrangements being made to commemorate the fourth death anniversary of party founder and former chief minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed.

Choudhary also urged the government to provide immediate relief to the farmers in Jammu as well as in Kashmir, who suffered massive losses due to an unprecedented snowfall and heavy rains early this winter.

He urged the government to adopt a long-term strategy to cope with the agrarian crisis looming large, with those associated with the farming sector bearing the brunt.

Stating that the bunkers built by the government for the people in the frontier regions were inadequate and did not have basic facilities, the PDP leader requested the government to review the process afresh so that in times of hostilities between India and Pakistan, poor people were not exposed to hardships.

Yogi Adityanath doing injustice to Muslims to save chair: Akhilesh Yadav

December 30, 2019 by Nasheman

LUCKNOW: Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav on Sunday accused Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath of trying to save his chair by doing “injustice” to Muslims in the garb of action taken against people protesting the contentious citizenship law and the NRC.

Addressing a press conference in Lucknow, Yadav said: “Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath knows that 200 BJP MLAs had staged a sit-in against him inside the UP Assembly. To save his chair, he is doing injustice on Muslims.”

The SP leader claimed that if the BJP MLAs were taken into confidence, it would emerge that 300 MLAs were angry with the chief minister.

“He (Adityanath) is afraid of this and getting injustice done by the police to save his chair,” Yadav said.

At least 19 people were killed across the state in widespread clashes during protests against the amended Citizenship Act and proposed nationwide National Register of Citizens (NRC).

Yadav said the truth would come out if a probe by a retired high court or Supreme Court judge was conducted into the violence.

“It will also become clear that the people who died in the violence were killed by police bullets. What is the truth that the government wants to hide?” Yadav asked.
