December 1, 2019 by Nasheman

In the second game, Rituparna was 7-3 up but she once again squandered the lead and allowed Chai Wan to move ahead after trailing 12-15 to seal the contest with nine straight points.

LUCKNOW: Former national champion Rituparna Das played her heart out before going down to Thailand’s Phittayaporn Chaiwan to bow out of the Syed Modi International badminton tournament here on Saturday.

The 23-year-old Indian, who had claimed the Polish Open title in 2016 and 2018, went down fighting 22-24 15-21 to Chaiwan in a 39-minute women’s singles semifinal match.

World No. 40 Rituparna, who had reached the finals of Dubai International this year, came into the tournament with a 0-1 head-to-head record against her Thai opponent, having lost their only meeting at the Vietnam Open last year.

Rituparna fell behind 1-6 early on but she made an impressive comeback to grab a 14-11 lead at one stage.

Chaiwan then opened up a slender 15-14 lead before moving neck and neck with the Indian.

The duo fought hard before the Thai player managed to seal the opening game at 24-22.

Hong Kong Protesters Say “Thank You” To Donald Trump For Support

December 1, 2019 by Nasheman

Trump this week signed into law congressional legislation that supported protesters in the China-ruled city, despite angry objections from Beijing.

Hong Kong Protesters Say 'Thank You' To Donald Trump For Support

Masked protesters hold placards during the “March of Gratitude to the US” event in Hong Kong.

Hundreds of people in Hong Kong, including many elderly residents, marched to the US consulate on Sunday to show “gratitude” for US support of anti-government protests that have roiled the financial hub for nearly six months.

Waving American flags, with some donning Donald Trump logo hats and t-shirts, protesters unfurled a banner depicting the US president standing astride a tank with a US flag behind him.

Another banner read “President Trump, please liberate Hong Kong.”

Trump this week signed into law congressional legislation that supported protesters in the China-ruled city, despite angry objections from Beijing.

“Thank you President Trump for your big gift to Hong Kong and God bless America,” shouted a speaker holding a microphone as he addressed a crowd at the start of the march.

Earlier on Sunday, hundreds of protesters, including many families with children, marched in protest against police use of tear gas.

Carrying yellow balloons and waving banners that read “No tear gas, save our children”, the protesters streamed through the city’s central business district towards government headquarters on the main Hong Kong island.

There has been relative calm in Hong Kong for the past week but activists have pledged to maintain the momentum of the movement with three marches planned for Sunday. All have been approved by authorities.

Anti-government protests have rocked the former British colony since June, at times forcing government offices, businesses, schools and even the international airport to shut.

“We want the police to stop using tear gas,” said a woman surnamed Wong, who marched with her husband and five year old son.

“It’s not a good way to solve the problem. The government needs to listen to the people. It is ridiculous.”

Police have fired around 10,000 rounds of tear gas since June, the city’s Secretary for Security, John Lee, said this week.

FURTHER PROTESTS

Sunday’s marches came as a top Hong Kong official said the government was looking into setting up an independent committee to review the handling of the crisis, in which demonstrations have become increasingly violent.

The protesters in Hong Kong are angry at what they see as Chinese meddling in the freedoms promised to the former British colony when it returned to Chinese rule in 1997.

China denies interfering and says it is committed to the “one country, two systems” formula put in place at that time and has blamed foreign forces for fomenting unrest.

Rioters burn cars and throw rocks on anniversary of ‘yellow vest’ demonstrations

Tear gas and water cannon were used on Saturday as Paris police sought to disperse yellow vest protesters marking the first anniversary of the birth of their movement against government policies seen as favouring the rich. Shattered glass littere…

On Saturday, secondary school students and retirees joined forces to protest against what they called police brutality and unlawful arrests.

While Saturday’s rallies were mostly peaceful, public broadcaster RTHK reported that police fired tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse protesters after a vigil outside the Prince Edward metro station. Some residents believe that some protesters were killed by police there three months ago. Police have denied that account.

Further protests are planned through the week and a big test of support for the anti-government campaign is expected on December 8 with a rally planned by Civil Human Rights Front, the group that organised million-strong marches in June.

Another march is planned on Sunday in the popular shopping district of Tsim Sha Tsui.

That march is scheduled to end in Hung Hom, a district near the ruined campus of Hong Kong Polytechnic University.

The campus turned into a battleground in mid-November when protesters barricaded themselves in and faced off riot police in violent clashes of petrol bombs, water cannon and tear gas.

About 1,100 people were arrested last week, some while trying to escape.

On Friday police withdrew from the university after collecting evidence and removing dangerous items including thousands of petrol bombs, arrows and chemicals which had been strewn around the site.

In a whirlwind campaign in Bengaluru, Yediyurappa says BJP will win all 15 seats in next week’s bypolls

BENGALURU: After campaigning for his party candidates in North Karnataka and Old Mysore region for a week, Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa on Saturday went on a whirlwind campaign in Bengaluru. From 11 am to 8 pm, the CM took part in roadshows, addressed street corner rallies and public meetings in Yeshwantpur and Mahalaxmi Layout assembly segments in the city.

In his interactions with voters, the CM emphasized on his development agenda and the need for a stable government. “Development is our only aim,” the CM said and asked even the JDS and the Congress workers to support the BJP candidate. Disqualified legislators S T Somashekara and K Gopaliah are the BJP candidates in Yeshwantpur and Mahalaxmi Layout assembly segments, respectively.

“The Congress and the JDS leaders are only interested in mid-term polls, and not development, and trying hard to ensure that BJP won’t get a majority. On December 9, when the counting of votes starts, they will all run away from the counting centres,” Yediyurappa said, expressing confidence of winning all 15 seats.  The CM even asked the voters to consider himself as the candidate and vote for the BJP.

BJP candidate Somashekar too hit out at the Congress and the JDS by saying during the 15 months of the coalition rule, they had not got any grants for the development of the constituency and within three months of the BJP rule, they had got Rs 750 crore for the development works.

On Sunday, the CM will be taking part in a roadshow in Shivajinagar and address election meetings before heading to Belagavi for the second round of campaigning in Gokak and Kagwad on Sunday evening. The CM has covered all 15 constituencies and in the next three days, he will be focusing more on the constituencies where his presence will help the party more, sources said.

“The CM will focus on assembly segments where his last-minute presence will help to swing one or two per cent votes more. This is being done based on inputs from various sources,” sources in the party said.

Gujarat cops search Nithyananda ashram

December 1, 2019 by Nasheman

Nityananda has been accused of rape, forceful confinement and kidnapping.

Self-styled godman Nithyananda

BENGALURU: Armed with a warrant issued by the Gujarat High Court, a Criminal Investigation Department (CID) team of the Gujarat police on Saturday searched the ashram of absconding self-styled godman Nithyananda at Bidadi near here. “A search was carried out at the ashram. After it was established that Nithyananda was not there, the managers at the ashram were questioned about his whereabouts,” a police officer from Bidadi said.

Nityananda has been accused of rape, forceful confinement and kidnapping. The Gujarat HC on Tuesday had slammed the police and asked them to produce two missing women who are siblings — Lopamudra Sharma and Nandhitha Sharma — before the court on December 10. The directive came on a plea filed by the girls’ father Janardhan Sharma, who resides in Bengaluru. It is widely believed that Nityananda, along with the two girls, is in Trinidad and Tobago.

The Gujarat police are working with Interpol, the Ministry of External Affairs and other agencies to trace the two women. Sources said the Karnataka police have been extending cooperating to their Gujarat counterparts in the investigation.

‘Nithyananda hasn’t attended court cases in Ramanagara’

However, a senior police officer told The New unday Express that Nithyananda has not been at his Bidadi for almost a year. “He is not in the country. He has not even attended court cases in Ramanagara,” said the officer. The two young women had recently posted videos on Facebook saying that they will not return to India unless the authorities meet their conditions which included being given
police protection.

They also said they were ready for a video conference at the embassy in Trinidad and Tobago. However, the Gujarat High Court rejected this and ordered that the two women should appear in person during the next hearing on December 10.Janardhan Sharma has alleged that the authorities at the ‘Yogini Sarvagyapeetham’ in Ahmedabad did not allow them to meet their children.

Four of his children were initially enrolled at the Nithyananda Dhyanapeetam at Nithyananda Nagara in Bidadi, near Bengaluru in 2013. Later, all four were shifted to Ahmedabad without notice last year.
Two minor children were returned, but the two adult daughters were kept in the ashram, he had complained.

Islamic State claims responsibility for London terror attack

December 1, 2019 by Nasheman

The extremist group’s Amaq news agency on Saturday said the 28-year-old attacker Usman Khan was one of Islamic State’s fighters.

LONDON: The Islamic State (IS) has claimed responsibilty for the Friday’s terror attack at London Bridge where two people were killed and three others injured.

The extremist group’s Amaq news agency on Saturday said the 28-year-old attacker Usman Khan was one of Islamic State’s fighters, reported metro.co.uk.

Without providing any evidence, Islamic State said that the attack was carried out in response to its calls to target citizens of the countries that have been part of a coalition fighting against the jihadist group.

“The person who carried out the London attack… was a fighter from the Islamic State, and did so in response to calls to target citizens of coalition countries,” the statement read.

Two people were stabbed to death and three others injured when Khan, a terror convict who had been out on parole, targeted a gathering of students and other former convicts during a Cambridge University conference on prisoners’ rehabilitation at Fishmongers’ Hall at the north end of London Bridge at 1.58 p.m. on Friday.

Television images captured Khan brandishing a knife as he walked across the London Bridge. He was shot dead by police after members of the public wrestled him to the ground.

Khan, who was living in Staffordshire, UK, was jailed in 2012 for being involved in a conspiracy to bomb the London Stock Exchange and establish a terror training camp in Pakistan.

In 2008, Khan’s home in Stoke-on-Trent was raided as part of a counter-terrorism investigation.

The Friday’s incident evoked memories of the 2017 terror attack at London Bridge when a van was deliberately driven into pedestrians before its three occupants ran to the nearby Borough Market area and began stabbing people in and around restaurants and pubs, leaving eight people dead and 48 injured. The attackers, who claimed allegiance to the Islamic State, were shot dead by the police.

The raids were conducted at businessman Jitendra Soni’s home, hotel, restaurant and night club here late Saturday night.

INDORE: Madhya Pradesh Police along with the Indore district authorities raided the home, media firm and three other establishments of a local businessman in connection with the honey-trap case, an official said on Sunday.

The raids were conducted at businessman Jitendra Soni’s home, hotel, restaurant and night club here late Saturday night, he said.

“Soni also owns a local eveninger. The investigators also went to his newspaper’s office,” the official said.

The authorities have so far not shared any details of the searches conducted at Soni’s premises.

His media firm was of late publishing news about some audio-video clips allegedly linked to the honey-trap case.

Meanwhile, some local organisations of journalists condemned the raid on Soni’s media firm, saying the exercise was aimed at “intimidating” the fourth pillar of democracy.

Five women and a man were arrested from Indore and Bhopal in September for allegedly running the honey-trap and blackmailing racket.

The racket was busted after an engineer of the Indore Municipal Corporation approached the police, claiming he was being blackmailed over some objectionable video clips by the accused who were trying to extort about Rs 3 crore from him.

The accused – Aarti Dayal (29), Monika Yadav (18), Shweta Vijay Jain (39), Shweta Swapnil Jain (48), Barkha Soni (34) and Om Prakash Kori (45) – are currently in judicial custody.
