NEW DELHI: The three-member Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) comprising of Kapil Dev, Anshuman Gaekwad and Shantha Rangaswamy made no bones about the fact that it was a close contest between Ravi Shastri and Mike Hesson for the head coach’s role, but what seems to have helped Shastri clinch the deal is his urge to erase the bitter memory of losing in the semi-final of the 2019 World Cup in England.

Source in the know of developments during the presentation said that Shastri made it clear that he has unfinished business and this team is headed for greatness with a brilliant leader in Virat Kohli.

“There were some pointed questions and one of them to Shastri was what went wrong in the semi-final against New Zealand. He made it clear that one bad day doesn’t make this team bad. In fact, he emphasized on how he has unfinished business as the team now looks to gear up for not one, but two World T20s — 2020 and 2021. The confidence with which he said this made the committee believe that Shastri is the man who needs to guide this team forward,” the source said.

The source further added that while there were parameters in place, one of the major areas where Shastri beat Hesson to the job was the team’s performance under him on foreign soil.

“The CAC was clear about the fact that champion teams do well on foreign soil. Every team does well at home and India has done the same over the years. But the team’s rise on foreign soil has been exemplary under Shastri. There is no denying the fact that the combination that Shastri and Kohli form is unparalleled in the current scenario and with Shastri acting as the guiding force, this team will only perform better in the times to comes,” the source revealed.

Interestingly, Shastri also supposedly credit Virat Kohli for the transition the team has made in recent times when it comes to being extremely professional as well as consistent with their performances.

“Shastri told the CAC that this team has a leader who believes in leading from the front and there is no way that the youngsters wouldn’t want to imbibe from someone like Kohli. He also told them how Kohli has set new benchmarks when it comes to the fitness standards and that has rubbed off on all the players who now believe that fitness is as crucial a part of being an international cricket as is batting and bowling well,” the source said.

While the general feeling was that the Indian would be re-appointed, the source said that it was a close call with Hesson impressing all the three members. “Hesson was really good. The committee had gone in with a clean mind and what the former Kiwi coach presented to them really had them impressed. But in the end, it was a case of Shastri knowing the boys inside out that clinched the deal for the former all-rounder,” the source explained.

Kashmir ka kya haal hain? (What is the situation in Kashmir?)” he would ask me when I visited him. I visited Atal Bihari Vajpayee at his house twice a year — on Diwali and New Year — after he demitted office. Whenever I entered the room, no matter how many people were there, he would summon me to sit next to him. It was the same words every time. “Kashmir ka kya haal hain?”

He was a visionary who tactfully mixed pragmatism with his large-heartedness. He was a great man of peace. When he passed away, I spoke to the people in Kashmir — what Vajpayee meant to them. Kashmiris were praying for eternal peace for him, and also hoping peace returns to Kashmir. That’s what one remembers the most. 

Usually, it is not easy for officers to have access to the Prime Minister. With Vajpayee, he was always open. Whenever I wanted a meeting, I could go and meet him. And he listened. What he thought of things, he would not always tell you. He was a man of few words. He expected you to deliver. Sometimes, at the end of the conversation, he would pinpoint on an element from the conversation and ask me to pursue it.   

Time ran out on Vajpayee…Nobody expected that they (the BJP) would lose the 2004 elections.  When Vajpayee and Brijesh Mishra left, I also decided to leave the PMO…Brijesh, in fact, told me that I was not a political appointee. The people said I should not have left…The irony is I knew Manmohan Singh much better than I knew Vajpayee. I thought of this umpteen times, and I think I did the right thing. In Vajpayee’s PMO, it was a family. It was the happiest PMO. He treated his officers in the PMO like his family. He would call officers from the PMO to home for either lunch or dinner and always had a wonderful table. His daughter Gunnu, as we called her, was a wonderful hostess. 

I went to officially say goodbye to him one last time after he left office. He was all alone at his home..still in Race Course Road. 

When I walked in, I did not know what to say. I said, “Sir, yeh kya ho gaya? (Sir, what happened?)” He laughed heartily…he could always laugh at himself. He said, “Unko bhi nahi malum kya ho gaya (Even the Congress does not know how it happened).” Throughout, he never lost his sense of humour.
Vajpayee was a colossus. He was the greatest of our prime ministers after Jawaharlal Nehru. I was very privileged to see him from such close quarters. It is an honour to be able to speak on him. 

Rajnath googly on the future of nuclear no first use doctrine

NEW DELHI: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Friday triggered a debate by suggesting India’s no first use (NFU) doctrine on nuclear arms was not written in stone, saying its future would depend on the prevailing circumstances. 

Strategic experts called it smart posturing, viewing it from the prism of tension with Pakistan after the Centre withdrew J&K’s special status and broke it up into two Union Territories, and the subsequent sharp statements by Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan.

“Pokhran is the area which witnessed Atal Ji’s firm resolve to make India a nuclear power and yet remain firmly committed to the doctrine of ‘No First Use’. India has strictly adhered to this doctrine. What happens in future depends on the circumstances,” The minister tweeted. 

He said this while visiting Pokhran to pay homage to the former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on his first death anniversary. Pokhran was where India had conducted its nuclear tests in 1998. 

Experts sought to read in Rajnath’s statement as a “signal” to Pakistan that the terms of reference have changed. 

Strategic affairs expert Bharat Karnad felt Pakistan is nowhere a real strategic threat to India and the statement of the defence minister should be seen in the light of the stated nuclear policy of India. “The fact is NFU is just a guideline and not an operational directive… There is no absolute ban on nuclear weapons,” added Prof Karnad.

What people don’t know is Pakistan used the nuclear blackmail even before the 1998 tests. “During the Kargil conflict Pakistan had, directly or indirectly, threatened India 17 times,” said A Vinod Kumar, research fellow at the Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses. 

Internet with 2G speed restored in Jammu, restrictions lifted in Rajouri after 12 days

The internet has been restored with low bandwidth as a preventive measure and to check any type of rumour-mongering or objectionable content circulated on social media, sources added.

JAMMU: The snapped mobile internet service was restored with 2G speed on Saturday in Jammu district while restrictions have also been lifted in Rajouri district, an official here said.

“The mobile internet service was restored during midnight but with 2G speed,” an official said.

He added that the internet has been restored with low bandwidth as a preventive measure and to check any type of rumour-mongering or objectionable content circulated on social media.

“The decision to suspend mobile internet service was taken by the government only to prevent such elements, who play spoilsport and create tension in the society,” he added and said that the service has been restored partially but will soon be restored with high speed.

Mobile internet was snapped on August 4 midnight just hours before the Government of India announced the revocation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir and bifurcated the state into two Union Territories.

The district administrations in all parts of J&K and Ladakh closely monitored the situation on ground and also on social media and anybody found, flaring up the matter or posting unwanted content to disturb peace and harmony was booked under relevant sections.

Meanwhile, restrictions have been eased in Rajouri during day time but will remain in force under Section 144 of CrPC between 2100 hours to 0500 hours, said an official.

Meanwhile, reports from other parts of the district said that mobile internet have also been restored barring some areas sensing “trouble” but will be restored there as well after reviewing the situation.

However, netizens started wishing each other on WhatsApp and Facebook as soon as the service was restored as it was like some festive like a celebration.

Arun Jaitley’s condition critical, say sources; Amit Shah, Ram Nath Kovind, Yogi Adityanath visit AIIMS

NEW DELHI: President Ram Nath Kovind, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath visited AIIMS on Friday to enquire about the health condition of former finance minister Arun Jaitley, who is stated to be “critical”, sources said.

The President visited the hospital around noon, while Shah and Adityanath visited AIIMS around 11.15 pm.

Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan and Minister of State for Health Ashwini Choubey were present during their visits.

According to the sources, Jaitley, 66, is critical and a multidisciplinary team of doctors is supervising his treatment.

He is admitted at the hospital’s intensive care unit (ICU).

The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) has not issued any bulletin on Jaitley’s health condition since August 10.

Jaitley was admitted on August 9 after he complained of breathlessness and restlessness.

In May this year, Jaitley was admitted to AIIMS for treatment.

Jaitley, a lawyer by profession, had been an important part in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Cabinet in the BJP government’s first term.

He held the finance and defence portfolios, and often acted as the chief troubleshooter of the government.

Jaitley did not contest the 2019 Lok Sabha election because of his ill-health.

He had undergone a renal transplant on May 14 last year at AIIMS with Railways Minister Piyush Goyal filling in for him in the finance ministry at that time.

Jaitley, who had stopped attending office since early April last year, was back in the finance ministry on August 23, 2018.

In September 2014, he underwent bariatric surgery to correct the weight he had gained because of a long-standing diabetic condition.

Bengaluru Policemen are on their toes after City Police Commissioner,Bhaskar Rao on Friday issued a high alert memo to all the senior officers to ensure that no untoward incident takes place.
The memo,however, does not specify any threat,including any possible terrorist attack or any major sabotage activity in the city.
Check posts at important places and take all precautionary measures at Vidhana Soudha,High Court,Airport,all Railway stations, Bengaluru Metro,BMTC,KSRTC Bus terminals,Malls,temples and other religious places and all five star hotels and busy markets and check lodges,PGs,Hostels and be alert round the clock.
Memo issued by Commissioner says all Officers should be available on rounds at important places in their areas,and officers deployed at night should check all vehicles at borders and detain suspicious vehicles, the Bengaluru police commissioner has ordered.
Major towns and cities in Karnataka have been beefed up after a high alert was sounded on Friday.Police said it was only an extension of the usual alert sounded for the Independence Day.

Meanwhile 9 suspicious people hailing from Mangaluru,Madikeri Kerala have been arrested in Mangaluru by Kadri Police station from a lodge.The nine people were arrested from a lodge near pumpwell on late Friday night.Cops have also seized a vehicle carrying National Crime Investigation board from the suspects possession and are investigating them.
The high alert comes when Karnataka is facing natural Calamities as at least 65 human and 941 animals have so far lost their lives in the rains and floods that have lashed Karnataka in the last two weeks recording 279% more rain than normal from 3-10 August, which is the highest in the last 118 years.14 people are still missing.

BENGALURU: Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa’s comment on ‘note printing machine’ drew criticism from the Congress and the JDS. On Tuesday, in response to flood-victims in Shivamogga who demanded relief, the Chief Minister said that the government does not possess a currency note printing machine.

Opposition leader Siddaramaiah criticised the statement saying, “The CM of Karnataka does not have a currency note printing machine to provide relief funds for flood victims but has Akshaya Patra to fund those MLAs whose greed exceeds the imagination of the common man.’’ He was referring to the MLAs of his own party who were allegedly lured by the BJP, and helped bring his government down. The JDS also added saying, “Who printed currency notes to ferry disgruntled MLAs in chartered planes and house them in a Five Star hotel?’’

This is with reference to HD Kumaraswamy’s 14- month government that was brought down after many of the coalition legislators resigned. The Karnataka Congress also lashed out at the chief minister for an advertisement with his picture in a vernacular newspaper. The advertisement was printed on the front page of the paper on Wednesday.

“BS Yediyurappa, what kind of a ‘Thirukana Shoki’ (showing off) is this? Narendra Modi has not visited the state to survey the flood, the government has not declared it a national calamity, they have not released Rs 5,000 crore for relief, and they have not yet expanded the ministry. Without doing work they spend money on advertisements, it is like insulting the flood victims.

Karnataka Congress further sarcastically added saying ”There was a note printing machine in the home of  KS Eshwarappa.’’

I don’t want the bubbly girl image anymore: Kajal Aggarwal

Last year, Kajal Aggarwal was part of the National Award-winning film, Awe, which was critically acclaimed.

It was in 2008, a year after her debut in the Telugu film, Lakshmi Kalayanam, that Kajal Aggarwal made her way into Tamil cinema. Since then, she has not only balanced Telugu and Tamil films, but made a brief foray or two into Bollywood too.

Every year since then, she has been a part of at least 4-5 films across industries. It seems she is at a crossroads now. “I feel like the whole chirpy girl image doesn’t work for me anymore because I am not that person now. I was younger then, but I can’t fake it now. Things have changed,” she says.

“I have always been vocal about my likes and dislikes, but now, I am more at ease in determining my script choices. I have more freedom of choice now. Apart from content, which is of primary importance, I now look at other aspects like the character I’m doing, how I fit into the entire script, etc…”

So, what drew her to Comali, in which she has very limited screen time? “The content. I know it is a cliched answer, but it is true. Comali is a different sort of film. It is a satirical take on evolution, and the boon and curse of technology,” she explains. “It does not focus on nostalgia per se, but it is a relevant take on how, as humans, our priorities have changed. Social media has taken over our lives. Why do we feel the urge to wake up in the morning, and go to Instagram to check what someone wore last night? It also touches upon relevant issues from the recent past, including the Chennai floods, and water crisis.”

Last year, Kajal was part of the National Award-winning film, Awe, which was critically acclaimed. She was not the lead, however. Even in Comali, she is said to have limited screen time. On the other hand, she is headlining a film like Paris Paris, the Tamil remake of Queen. Looking at her films of the recent past, one can’t help but notice a marked shift when compared to the roles she was doing, say, a couple of years ago. “I have made a lot of mistakes, but looking back, I genuinely think they were learning steps. If I hadn’t done that, I wouldn’t have known my strengths. Now, I am looking for scripts that challenge my limits.

About screen time, I have done characters looking at the project in totality, like in Comali. I have done films where I am not the stereotypical commercial heroine,” says Kajal, and is quick to add that this doesn’t mean they aren’t enjoyable ventures.

“I like the jhatkas, dressing up nicely etc… I like to balance meaty content with films that I do just for cinematic joy.” Kajal’s career can be said to be on an upswing, considering her upcoming projects include Kamal Haasan’s Indian 2, and the much-anticipated English-Telugu film, produced by Vishnu Manchu. While she remains tight-lipped about the project, which requires her to learn Kalaripayattu and horse riding, Kajal assures it will be very different from what she has done so far in her career. It is satisfying that she thinks of each of her upcoming films of hers as different, including her upcoming English-Telugu project.

“More than a Hollywood film, I would call it a global film that is very Indian. We are projecting this story in world cinema and are planning to release it in Mandarin and Cantonese too. They want to release it in time for the Berlin Film Festival,” says Kajal, who credits working with global technicians in this film, and also in Indian 2, for helping her look at acting in a different perspective.

“There is a lot of learning and adapting to different styles. I feel as Indian actors, we are in our comfort zones, but in these two films, the team is international, and they are the best at what they do. They have proven it with their work, and don’t believe in compromising,” says Kajal, who believes that as a spontaneous artiste, the first few takes are always her best.

“In the English-Telugu project, I am the only common actor in both films, and I have to do multiple takes. It does take a toll, but I’m all about pushing boundaries now, and I’m loving it. I feel I’m starting my life all over again and unlearning everything.” This unlearning of Kajal, it seems, is happening at an important juncture of Indian cinema when boundaries between the film industries are gradually blurring.

One of the first films to do this was her very own Magadheera. Is Indian cinema slowly moving towards pan-Indian content? “I agree. I feel regional cinema is not regional anymore. With the influx of digital portals, everyone is watching everything. We are not defined by boundaries. Our audience is at a stage where it wants things done differently. Our nation is curious,” says Kajal, who remains non-committal about rumours regarding her entry into the digital space with a webseries directed by Venkat Prabhu.

Fifteen years in the film industry, and over 50 films, Kajal hasn’t always found the going easy, and yet, Jayam Ravi, her costar in Comali, said recently that she is a bundle of positivity. How does she manage to keep herself so? “Detachment. I am very attached to the process of filming, but only till the film is made. I am concerned about the results of the film, but don’t get invested in it. This detachment has worked for me. It helps me be normal.”
