Zaira Wasim Quits Bollywood; Raveena Tandon Wishes ‘Ungrateful Two-Film-Olds’ Would ‘Exit Gracefully’

Zaira Wasim announced she’s quit Bollywood saying the workings of the industry “damaged my peace, imaanand my relationship with Allah.”

Zaira Wasim Quits Bollywood; Raveena Tandon Wishes 'Ungrateful Two-Film-Olds' Would 'Exit Gracefully'

Dangal actress Zaira Wasim’s announcement that she’s quitting films because of religious reasons has severely polarised opinion. Many responses have applauded her decision, others say her choice must be respected, and still others have criticised her as being regressive – actress Raveena Tandon is among the latter. “Doesn’t matter if two-film olds are ungrateful to the industry that have given them all. Just wish they’d exit gracefully and keep their regressive views to themselves.” In a separate tweet responding to one from AltNews founder Pratik Sinha, Ms Tandon wrote: “Exit is your choice, reason, by all means. Just do not demean it for everyone else.” Raveena Tandon also described the film industry as “one where all work shoulder to shoulder, no difference in caste and religion.”

We need more Zairas to break away from the clutches of religion and become successful individuals, and not the other way round.9545:09 AM – Jul 1, 2019Twitter Ads info and privacy210 people are talking about this

Zaira Wasim, 18, announced on social media over the weekend that “I am not truly happy with this identity i.e my line of work” and described the workings of Bollywood as an “environment that damaged my peace, imaan and my relationship with Allah.” Ms Wasim made her debut in Aamir Khan’s 2016 film Dangal, for which she won the National Award for Best Supporting Actress. Her second film, Secret Superstar – also an Aamir Khan production and featuring him in a supporting role – won Ms Wasim the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actress. Zaira Wasim has a third film in production, The Sky Is Pink, co-starring Priyanka Chopra and Farhan Akhtar.

With two critically-acclaimed films behind her and a third on its way, Zaira Wasim was considered one of Bollywood’s best young talents. So her post on Saturday came as a surprise to many; in it, she explained that she was unprepared for the trappings of fame and ‘public attention’ and that she had ‘never set out to do or become’ a ‘role model for the youth.’

In her post, Zaira Wasim explained she realised “that though I may fit here perfectly, I do not belong here.” Acknowledging that she received “a lot of love, support, and applause,” Ms Wasim also said that her choice of profession clashed with her faith: “What it also did was to lead me to a path of ignorance, as I silently and unconsciously transitioned out of imaan (faith). While I continued to work in an environment that consistently interfered with my imaan, my relationship with my religion was threatened. I discovered my lack of knowledge of the basic fundamentals of my religion and how my inability to reinforce a change earlier was a result of confusing my heart’s contentment and wellbeing with strengthening and satisfying my own (shallow and worldly) desires.”

In many responses to her post, Zaira Wasim has been reminded that the film industry is one in which the three biggest and most powerful stars are Muslim – Aamir, Salman and Shah Rukh Khan. Many point out that some of Bollywood’s most beloved female stars have been Muslim – Waheeda Rahman, Meena Kumari, Madhubala, Nargis, Shabana Azmi, Parveen Babi, Zeenat Aman and many more. Other tweets, like Kashmir politician Omar Abdullah, simply wish Ms Wasim well.

Omar Abdullah✔@OmarAbdullah

Who are any of us to question @ZairaWasimmm’s choices? It’s her life to do with as she pleases. All I will do is wish her well & hope that what ever she does makes her happy.5,69512:26 PM – Jun 30, 2019Twitter Ads info and privacy1,750 people are talking about thisCOMMENT

Some reactions on Twitter remind everyone that Zaira Wasim is very young and has previously spoken about battling depression. Last year, Ms Wasim revealed that she had been diagnosed with severe anxiety and depression and that she dealt with suicidal thoughts, self-loathing and nervous breakdowns. In 2017, Zaira Wasim posted and then deleted a Facebook apology after being brutally trolled for meeting then Jammu And Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti. Nollywood rallied to Ms Wasim’s side; her Dangal and Secret Superstar co-star Aamir Khan posted a statement of support. Anupam Kher, Javed Akhtar, Swara Bhasker and others from the film fraternity also posted messages.

World Cup 2019: England Beat India By 31 Runs To Keep Semis Hopes Alive

July 1, 2019 by Nasheman

Jonny Bairstow’s 111 and Liam Plunkett’s 3/55 helped England end India’s unbeaten run in World Cup 2019.

England defeated India by 31 runs at Edgbaston in Birmingham on Sunday in the league fixture of the ongoing World Cup 2019. Rohit Sharma top scored for India with a fighting knock of 102 but it was not enough as India suffered their first loss in World Cup 2019. Chasing a huge total of 338, India lost the wicket of KL Rahul for a duck in the third over. Virat Kohli did try and steady the innings with Rohit, but once Kohli fell for 66, it was always going to be difficult for India. With this win, England keep their hopes alive of reaching the semi-finals. Liam Plunkett was the pick of the bowlers for England, he finished with figures of 3/55 in 10 overs.

Hardik Pandya and MS Dhoni tried to score quickly but England bowlers were up to the task. Pandya lost his wicket for 45 while Dhoni remained unbeaten on 42.

For India, their spinners failed to restrict the boundaries and allowed England batsmen to score freely in the middle overs. Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal, both went the distance. The spin-twins went for 160 runs and it was Kuldeep who managed to pick up a wicket.

England, who came into this match on the back of successive defeats by Sri Lanka and Australia, will be assured of a place in the last four if they beat New Zealand in their last group match on Wednesday.

India can reach the knockout phase by beating Bangladesh when they return to Edgbaston on Tuesday.

England’s bid to win a first World Cup title is based on aggressive top-order batting but the runs had dried up lately.

That made their 337-7 after captain Eoin Morgan won the toss on a good pitch in Birmingham all the more heartening.

Bairstow top-scored with 111 and all-rounder Ben Stokes added a brisk 79, with India paceman Mohammed Shami taking a career-best 5-69.

No side have made more batting second to win a World Cup match than Ireland’s 329-7 against England at Bangalore in 2011.

Title contenders India weren’t up to the task as their chase petered out on 306-5.

India were a long way off from the moment opener KL Rahul was caught and bowled for a duck by Warwickshire paceman Woakes, who reeled off an impressive three straight maidens with the new ball on his home ground.

Rohit Sharma, Rahul’s opening partner, should have fallen for four but Joe Root dropped a routine second-slip catch off fast bowler Jofra Archer.

It threatened to be a costly miss with Rohit Sharma going on to 102, his third century of the tournament, in front of an overwhelmingly India-supporting capacity crowd of more than 24,000.

Rohit Sharma also shared a second-wicket stand of 138 with India captain Virat Kohli, whose 66 was the star batsman’s fifth successive fifty of this World Cup.

But Kohli fell when he sliced Liam Plunkett to backward point.

Rohit Sharma went to three figures, after scores of 122 not out against South Africa and 140 against Pakistan, in 106 balls with 15 fours.

But the pressure of the chase told when he was caught behind off a Woakes off-cutter to leave India 198-3 in the 37th over.

Rishabh Pant made 32 at better than a run-a-ball and it looked as if he had hit the first six of the innings only for Woakes, running round from deep backward square, to hold a brilliant diving catch.

India needed 104 more runs off the last 10 overs but their hopes faded when the big-hitting Hardik Pandya (45) holed out to substitute James Vince off fast bowler Plunkett, who justified his recall in place of off-spinner Moeen Ali with 3-55.

Earlier, Bairstow and Jason Roy (66), returning after missing three matches with a torn hamstring, shared a first-wicket stand of 160 — the highest opening partnership of the tournament.

Bairstow, involved in a pre-match spat with former England captain Michael Vaughan after suggesting pundits wanted England to lose, twice saw big inside edges miss the stumps.

Roy could have been out on 21 when all-rounder Pandya appealed for a caught behind down the legside.

But umpire Aleem Dar signalled a wide instead and Kohli opted against a review, although replays suggested the ball had touched Roy’s glove.

Roy reached fifty in just 41 balls before, on 66, he was well caught by substitute Ravindra Jadeja at long-on.

A single off Pandya saw Bairstow to a 90 ball-hundred, including eight fours and six sixes, before he carved Shami to deep cover.

Mumbai in top 20 most expensive cities in Asia for expatriates

NEW DELHI: Mumbai is India’s most expensive city and among the top 20 costliest cities surveyed in Asia for expatriates, as residential housing prices remain among the highest in the world, a survey by global consulting leader Mercer says.

According to Mercer’s, Mumbai fell 12 spots and was ranked at the 67th position out of 209 cities sur25th Annual Cost of Living Surveyveyed.

Regarding Mumbai the report said, “costs of items such as eating out and utilities show decline, however, residential housing costs remain among the most expensive in the world, contributing to its top rankings in Asia and globally”. The other Indian cities in the list include New Delhi at 118th place, Chennai (154), Bengaluru (179) and Kolkata (189).

All the four cities have moved down from last year. “A relatively slower price increase in surveyed Indian cities and major currencies weakening against the US dollar has pushed our Indian cities down in the ranking,” said Padma Ramanathan, India Global Mobility Practice Leader at Mercer.

The survey noted that eight out of the top ten of the world’s most expensive cities for expatriates are Asian cities, resulting from high costs for expatriate consumer goods and a dynamic housing market. The costliest city in the world for the second consecutive year is Hong Kong followed by Tokyo, Singapore and Seoul.

Other cities appearing in the top ten list are Zurich (5), Shanghai (6), Ashgabat (7), Beijing (8), New York City (9), and Shenzhen (10). The world’s least expensive cities for expatriates are Tunis (209), Tashkent (208), and Karachi (207).

The survey further noted that across continents, Indian multinationals have been driving key talent mobilisation into countries like the USA (especially in the hi-tech sector), UAE, UK, Kenya and Bangladesh.

According to the survey, a number of factors – like currency fluctuations, cost of inflation for goods and services and volatility in accommodation prices – contribute to the overall cost of expatriate packages for employees on international assignments.

The figures for Mercer’s cost of living and rental accommodation cost comparisons are derived from a survey conducted in March 2019. Exchange rates from that time and Mercer’s international basket of goods and services from its cost of living survey have been used as base measurements.

BENGALURU/NEW DELHI: The ED on Friday attached assets worth Rs 209 crore in its money laundering probe into a ponzi scam involving Karnataka’s IMA group, in which thousands of depositors have allegedly been duped.

The central agency said its Bengaluru zonal office has issued a provisional order, under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, for attachment of immovable assets worth Rs 197 crore and about Rs 12 crore deposits kept in bank accounts.

The total amount of the attachment is about Rs 209 crore, it said. The agency recently filed a criminal case of money laundering against the IMA group of companies and its absconding main promoter and Managing Director Mohammed Mansoor Khan after reports emerged that he has gone underground fearing investments worth crores of about 40,000 investors have tanked.

View image on Twitter

Khan, it said, had promised returns ranging from 2.5 to 3 per cent month to the investors, who are mainly from the Muslim community. The scam had come to light after a video of his purported statement claiming that the investments have been lost surfaced.

The ED had summoned Khan multiple times but he did not depose before the agency and it is suspected that he has left the country. The agency is working towards getting an Interpol arrest warrant issued against him and get him declared a fugitive economic offender by a court.

The Karnataka government has constituted a special investigation team (SIT) of the police to probe the case.

June 29, 2019 by Nasheman

On Friday, Shreevats Sanjay, Deputy Director General and Regional Director-South, from the Ministry of Tourism said that as many people visit Bengaluru for business, it was an ideal MICE destination.

BENGALURU:  Karnataka, which has in the past been promoted as wildlife and a heritage destination, will now reach out to prospective tourists, pushing several destinations across the state through their cuisines. Additionally, Bengaluru, the state capital and a major hub for the IT and BT industry in the country, will also be promoted as a MICE (meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions) destination by the Tourism Ministry.

On Friday, Shreevats Sanjay, Deputy Director General and Regional Director-South, from the Ministry of Tourism said that as many people visit Bengaluru for business, it was an ideal MICE destination.
“There is however a need to set up convention facilities across the state so that other cities are equally promoted,” he said.

Speaking to The New Indian Express, on the sidelines of the three day long Asia Skal Congress 2019, Sanjay said, “Similarly food is something that is closest to people’s hearts. Just like other parts of India, Karnataka also has many cuisines to offer which also need to be popularised to attract tourists.”

He said that while the heritage and spirituality of Karnataka is popular, there is need for more promotion. The state is gaining popularity for wellness tourism. “The ministry is working closely with the state tourism department to promote Karwar as an ideal family destination. Since Goa is over full and not suitable as a family destination, Karwar is ideal,” Sanjay added.

At the inaugural, Mahesh said that the state would explore opportunities to put Karnataka tourism on the international map. He said that festivals of the state as well as Hyderabad- Karnataka region as ideal tourism destinations will be showcased to international guests, apart from the pristine Western Ghats and virgin beaches.

The conference was inaugurated by tourism and seri-culture minister Sa Ra Mahesh, Skal International President Lavonne Wittmann and Skal- Bengaluru President Manoj Mathew were present. Around 250 delegates from 10 countries came together to promote friendship and fellowship through tourism. Skal conference is being held in Bengaluru after 35 years.

The court also indicated that it will issue the directions if the state government is not accorded sanction for resuming work and to release the funds to ensure that the sewage water is not entering the river, as the same is pending before the government.

On March 9, 2018, the Deputy Commissioner of Kodagu held a meeting with officials concerned and it was discussed that the Temple authorities have released Rs 5 lakh to Karnataka Urban Water Supply and Underground Drainage Board to prepare action plan to ensure the sewage water system in Bhagamandala Grama Panchayat and does not join the river. In fact, action plan was prepared in 2014-15 by the Board and the cost of the project was Rs 4.51 crore as per the revised plan. But it was not materialised as same is pending before the government.

Referring this, the petitioner has prayed the court to issue directions to the authorities to ensure sewage system to be properly laid Bhagamandala to ensure no pollution is caused either by the sewage water or by solid waste disposal in surrounding radius of 2 kms around Triveni Sangama.

In its objections, the State said that in Bhagamandala village, there are about 500 houses and about 40-50 houses situated close to river are generating sewage and is collected it in the soak pit. There will not be any discharge from these houses and sewage would join the river during summer.

BENGALURU: Directorate of Enforcement (ED) has issued a notice to Minister for Food and Civil Supplies Zameer Ahmed Khan, in connection with the IMA Gold multi-crore fraud case. The ED has already provisionally attached properties worth Rs 209 crore belonging to IMA. On Friday, ED officials issued notice to the minister asking for his reply before July 5.

Speaking to reporters, Zameer confirmed that he had received the notice. “Is there anything wrong in issuing a notice? They are doing their job. I had sold a property to him (IMA founder Mohammed Mansoor Khan) and maybe that is why they have issued the notice. I will reply to it before July 5.”

Though the minister has admitted to receiving the notice, it is not yet known what clarifications the ED has sought from him. Mohammed Mansoor Khan has been absconding for more than 20 days now and a Special Investigation Team (SIT) constituted by the government of Karnataka is investigating the case and is on the lookout for him.

June 29, 2019 by Nasheman

Rachakonda traffic police strongly believes this move will spread happiness among safe drivers as their honesty is recognised.

Traffic

HYDERABAD: Motorists following traffic rules in Hyderabad are set to be honoured with certificates by the city police under a novel initiative.

The Rachakonda Police Commissionerate here Thursday launched the programme “Patrol for Happy Driving” to mark the completion.

As part of the initiative launched by Rachakonda Commissioner Mahesh M Bhagwat, the traffic police will identify drivers who follow traffic rules as a habit and take safety measures in driving vehicles.

“So far the police have been trying to identify traffic violators and impose fines and to seize vehicles and so on.

Now as a token of recognition to the people following traffic rules, Rachakonda police launched a unique programme which is the only one-of-its-kind in India “Patrol for Happy Driving,” Bhagwat said.

Such drivers will be given stickers and certificates of appreciation.

Rachakonda traffic police strongly believes this move will spread happiness among safe drivers as their honesty is recognised, he said.

It is observed that as a result of providing awareness on following traffic rules many people have started taking safety measures like wearing helmet, using seat belt, giving proper signals from their vehicles and maintaining safe distance from other vehicles and so on, the top cop said.

After launching this programme, Bhagwat checked some vehicles and found one woman doctorand a senior citizen along with other autorickshaw and lorry drivers as safe drivers and pasted ‘Safe Driver’ stickers on their vehicles and honoured them with a certificate.

Henceforth, Rachakonda traffic police will identify 8000 safe drivers and they will be honoured with a sticker on their vehicle as a safe driver and a certificate as a token of their sincerity.

“The main aim of launching this programme is to encourage the law-abiding citizens by honouring them and bring changes among others to make them obey the law,” Bhagwat added.

Several Congress leaders quit to give Rahul Gandhi ‘free hand’ to choose new team

June 29, 2019 by Nasheman

Hours after Vivek Tankha quit as the party’s Chairman for Law and RTI cell, many others from Delhi, MP and Haryana too gave up their posts.

Congress president Rahul Gandhi

NEW DELHI: A spate of resignations took place on Friday after Congress chief Rahul Gandhi asserted that he took the onus of the debacle in the Lok Sabha election and expressed unhappiness that senior leaders fail to own responsibility for the party’s poor performance.

Meanwhile, the party decided to appoint Kondagaon MLA Mohan Makran as the party chief in Chhattisgarh in place of Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel, who had asked the party to relieve him from the duty as his hands are full.

More changes are expected as the party is expected to appoint new chief in Madhya Pradesh where Chief Minister Kamal Nath is leading the state unit.

The first to tender resignation was Rajya Sabha member Vivek Tankha, AICC Department chairman Law, RTI and HR, on late Thursday. Soon, over 120 party leaders, including AICC secretaries, working in-charges of Delhi and Telanaga, and other state office bearers, signed mass resignation letters.

“We all should submit our resignations for party positions and give Rahul ji a free hand to choose his team. I welcome Kamal Nath’s statement to that effect. I unequivocally submit my resignation as AICC Department chairman Law, RTI and HR. Party cannot afford a stalemate for too long,” Tanka tweeted.

“Rahul ji please make drastic changes to revive the party as a fighting force. You have the commitment and determination. Just cobble a good, acceptable and influential nationwide team. I am with you in all situations,” he added.

Rahul himself remains adamant on his decision to step down as the party chief. During a meeting with leaders from Haryana on Thursday, the Congress president said that he owns up the responsibility and would work for the party.
