Janardhana Reddy’s house attached by Govt

February 14, 2019 by Nasheman

Former BJP minister G Janardhana Reddy’s tony residence near Basaveshwara Circle has been attached by the government, in connection with the Ambidant Marketing Pvt Ltd cheating case, in which Reddy was arrested last year.

The Central Crime Branch (CCB) police had invoked the Karnataka Protection of Interest of Depositors in Financial Establishments Act, and sought information from the public about movable and immovable assets belonging to the accused. As per the Act, properties belonging to the accused who default on return of deposits can be attached, auctioned and the money returned to the depositors.

As Janardhana Reddy is also an accused in the case, the CCB had investigated the properties in his name. “We had information about his properties, and most of them were registered in his name, and had already been attached by the CBI and ED in his old cases. Only his residence ‘Parijatha’, next to Chalukya Hotel, was found fit to be attached. Procedures have been completed and Reddy’s house is attached. It is valued at `5 crore,” a senior CCB officer said.

Beside Reddy’s house, property worth Rs 40 crore belonging to Syed Farid Ahmed, the proprietor of Ambidant Marketing Pvt Ltd, has also been attached by the agencies, along with other accused persons. It may be recalled that CCB police had arrested Janardhana Reddy in November last year, on charges of receiving D20 crore from Farid Ahmed, promising to help him in a case registered by the Enforcement Directorate (ED).

The CCB, which has completed the probe, is ready with the chargesheet along with the list of properties attached. Sources said, they will submit it to court once the budget session ends on Friday. “As there are chances that political parties would take up the issue in the Legislative Assembly or Council if the chargesheet is filed now, as Reddy is an accused, we have been directed to submit it to the court only on Friday or later,” a CCB official said.

Lok Sabha passed 205 Bills in five years: Sumitra Mahajan

February 14, 2019 by Nasheman

Nasheman News :Speaker Sumitra Mahajan on Wednesday expressed her satisfaction over the performance of the 16th Lok Sabha, as its sitting came to an end on the last day of the Budget Session, saying the House passed 205 of the 219 Bills introduced during the entire period.

In her valedictory speech, she said that in the last five years since June 2014, the House had a total of 331 sittings of 1,612 hours, out of which 422 hours went in vain due to disruptions.

Mahajan was elected as Speaker on June 6, 2014 after Prime Minister Narendra Modi took over the reins.

She thanked the members for their cooperation in smooth conduct of the House and also expressed her regret, if her words or rulings hurt their sentiments.

She also asked all the members to impartially introspect whether they lived up to the expectations of people whom they represented.

“In the last session of the 16th Lok Sabha, it is time that we introspect whether we have lived up to the expectation of the people during the last five years. What we have achieved and what still needs to be done. We should do an impartial analysis,” Mahajan said wishing good luck to the members for the ensuing general elections.

She said the major legislations passed in the Lok Sabha include Black Money (Undisclosed Foreign Income and Assets) and Imposition of Tax Bill, 2015; Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Bill, 2015; Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code, 2016; Benami Transactions (Prohibition) Amendment Bill, 2016; Constitution (One Hundred and First Amendment) Bill, 2016 regarding introduction of the Goods and Services Tax.

Puducherry CM protests outside Kiran Bedi’s residence

February 14, 2019 by Nasheman

Nasheman News : Puducherry Chief Minister V. Narayanasamy on Wednesday staged a protest against Lt. Governor Kiran Bedi outside her official residence.

On her part, Bedi on Wednesday evening wrote to Narayanasamy inviting him for a meeting on February 21.

Wearing a black shirt and black dhoti, Narayanasamy sat outside the Raj Nivas to protest her preventing the implementation of his government’s welfare schemes.

He was joined by his ministerial colleagues and DMK lawmakers.

Narayansamy also accused Bedi of interfering in the day-to-day activities of the government.

His protest came after Bedi hit the road two days ago and advised two-wheeler owners to wear helmets.

While Bedi wanted the helmet rule for two-wheeler riders to be implemented at one go, Narayanasamy wanted the implementation in phases.

In a tweet, Bedi said: “Sad to see when a CM sends a letter to Lt Governor and within a week demands a reply by force of a ‘dharna’/ blockade of Raj Nivas. Also makes unfounded allegations, misleading people in Puducherry. He openly dares violation of MV Act on wearing of helmets to prevent fatal accidents.”

Bedi, in her letter to Narayanasamy, said: “All matters you had mentioned in the letter need an examination for a considered response. Needless to say none of the issues are pending at Raj Nivas (as being alleged). Besides you never said in your letter that unless you get a reply by February 13th. you and your colleagues shall come and sit on a dharna outside.”

“However, I invite you for a detailed discussion on your matters on February 21 at 10 a.m. Please confirm,” Bedi said.

BJP supporters body-shame Priyanka Gandhi

February 14, 2019 by Nasheman

Nasheman News : Priyanka Gandhi, Congress General Secretary, who is close to achieve two lakh followers on Twitter in two days, has been targeted through body shaming on the Facebook by proclaimed BJP supporters. She logged in to Twitter on Monday.

K. S. Bedi, ex-President of advertising agency Rediffusion DY&R, just one of them, has posted in the past 24 hours several pictures of Priyanka Gandhi with captions that highlight her body weight.

Sample this: Three cheers! One for each chin. Prosperity shrieks.

Many users liked the post and made remarks on similar lines.

“Will someone please tell Indira Gandhi (read Priyanka Gandhi) that not all the unaccounted money needs to be spent on food and drink,” reads another of his posts.

One user called her “P. (Pee) Gandhi Vadera”.

Bedi even justified his fat-shamming posts when some users objected to his way of fighting the Congress, ahead of the general election.

“Have yet to encounter anyone who has either not poked fun at the obesity of Amit Shah and Irani (Smriti Irani) or liked a post doing that,” reads another post.

“What happens to genteel India when someone makes similar comments on the three chins of the current Indira Gandhi! Han han wohi who pays 31K as rent for a government bunglow worth a rental of 5 lacs. Yes, yes, the one whose husband is one of India’s richest landlords,” it added.

Nasheman News : The Union Cabinet on Wednesday gave its ex post facto approval to the Registration of Marriage of Non-Resident Indians Bill, 2019 which was introduced in the Rajya Sabha on Monday.

The Bill seeks to provide safeguards to Indian women who are trapped in fraudulent marriages with NRIs.

“The Bill provides for amendment of the legal framework to act as a deterrent to the erring NRI spouses and creating more accountability and offer protection against exploitation of Indian Citizens married to NRIs,” Union Minister Piyush Goyal told reporters after the Cabinet meeting.

Once the Bill is passed, marriages by NRIs would be registered in India or Indian missions and posts abroad, and necessary changes would be carried out in the Passports Act and Code of Criminal Procedure, an official statement said.

Goyal said the Bill would offer great protection to Indian citizens married to NRIs, and serve as a deterrent to NRIs against harassment of their spouses and benefit Indian women married to NRIs worldwide.

I’m not being dictated to by RSS: Himachal CM

February 14, 2019 by Nasheman

B

[Nasheman news] Shimla Facing the challenge of retaining all the four Lok Sabha seats, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur says he is not being dictated to by the RSS and that he enjoys a free hand to lead the party in the coming elections.

For him, development work and no witch hunting is the mantra.

“This accusation (of RSS remote controlling him) does not have an iota of truth. “Our central leadership has reposed full faith in me and has given a free hand to run the affairs in the state. The RSS is an apolitical nationalist organisation, which has nothing to do with state affairs,” Thakur told IANS in an interview, dismissing rumours in political circles that he is being dictated by BJP ideologue Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and party’s senior leaders.

Five-time legislator Thakur (54) was elevated after the BJP’s chief ministerial candidate, Prem Kumar Dhumal, suffered an abject defeat in the 2017 assembly polls. Several names were doing the rounds at the time, including that of Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda, whom the party did not relieve from national politics.

“I don’t think there is anything wrong in seeking the advice of Dhumal and Nadda, on any regarding matter related to the development of the state,” Thakur stated categorically.

On getting free hand from the high command to lead the party in the elections, Thakur, who has won his fifth consecutive assembly election, said: “The elections are fought with collective efforts and with collective strategy. Being head of the state I would have greater responsibility to motivate the rank and file to ensure the party’s victory.”

“I am fully confident that the BJP will retain all the four Lok Sabha seats (from the state) in the General Elections,” Thakur added.

Carrying out development on the debris of decades of vendetta politics, Thakur said the BJP has brought a generational change in the state politics.

“This change has brought new ideas of governance. Shunning the politics of revenge and counter accusations, we have put forth development as our guiding principle in reforms. We have taken several new people-centric initiatives in 13 months,” the plain-speaking Thakur said.

The first-time Chief Minister, who has 11 ministers — half of them first-timers, believes the biggest achievement of his government has been winning over the confidence of the people.

“The government from the day one started working with a sole aim of development and welfare of the people. My government is working without any vendetta and vengeance towards our political opponents.”

The state, he said, has implemented several decisions and schemes which are bound to transform the economy and the people.

“The Jan Manch (public meeting in every district headquarters on first Sunday of a month) programme launched by us has been appreciated even by our political opponents.

“Till date, over 33,966 grievances of the public have been redressed in 106 Jan Manchs. Similarly, the very first decision of the government to lower the age limit of senior citizens for availing old-age pension without any income criteria from 80 to 70 years have benefitted over 1.60 lakh people,” he said.

Thakur, who rose through the ranks, believes establishing direct contact with the common masses will definitely help his party retaining four Lok Sabha seats in the ensuing General Elections.

On the central leadership reposing faith in him and his first-time cabinet colleagues and bringing generation change in the state politics, he said: “Yes, I agree that the Vidhan Sabha elections results of 2017 brought in a generation change in the state politics. Since all my cabinet colleagues are young and have a new vision and new vigour, this would definitely help progress and development of the state.”

“I did not face any challenge as such during the last one year. But still the major concern before me has been to bring back the derailed economy of the state back on track and understand the developmental aspirations of the people. For this, I toured 65 (of the 68) assembly constituencies during this one year to understand the developmental needs.

“I am sure that after a year in office now I am more clear and precise about the expectations of the people,” he said.

The Himalayan state, whose hydropower generation as well as horticulture and tourism are major contributors to the economic development, is facing one of its worst financial crises – with its loan liability at nearly Rs 50,000 crore.

“We have inherited a loan burden of over Rs 46,500 crore from the previous government due to their financial mismanagement and unmindful expenditure. Therefore, the biggest challenge before us was to bring back the derailed economy back on the track.”

“It is true that due to limited financial resources of its own the state has to heavily depend on financial assistance and loans from the Centre and external funding agencies. Still soon after assuming the office in the state, the government took some concrete steps to stop wasteful and unproductive expenditure, besides striving hard to create its own resources for income generation.”

[Nasheman news] New DelhiA two-judge bench of the Supreme Court on Thursday delivered a split verdict on the issue of transfer and posting of Delhi government officers.

While Justice A.K. Sikri said transfers and postings of Joint Secretaries and officers above will be in the domain of Lieutenant Governor; for those below them, the recommendation will be routed through the Council of Ministers of the elected government in Delhi.

“Political Power To Women” Shakti – Maximising Women Elected to Lok Sabha in 2019

February 13, 2019 by Nasheman

Women Politicians Across Party Lines Say Electoral Tokenism Must End; Women Must Unite To Vote Women To Lok Sabha

Shakti –  “Political Power to Women”
launched nationally in Delhi on February 12th at the Constitution Club of India. Over a 100 invitees attended the event including aspiring politicians, students, women’s groups, civil services aspirants, lawyers and others. Members of Parliament, party spokeswomen, leaders, political commentators and voter data analysts weighed in on how to maximise the number of women elected to the 17th Lok Sabha.
Nisha Agrawal of Team Shakti and ex-CEO of Oxfam India, in her welcome note emphasised that, “We are all aware about how much has changed with women in India in every other sphere from education to health, except in political representation. Shakti’s first goal is to better than the 16th Lok Sabha, and pressure parties to give more tickets to women, and enable more women to be elected this General Election.”

Tara Krishnaswamy, co-founder of Shakti in her opening presentation established the need for a women’s caucus in a democracy, “The natural progression of women into Parliament has gone from 24 women MPs in 1952 to 66 in 2014, amounting to not even one women MP added per year! We have no choice as citizens but to exert public pressure on political parties and exhort voters to vote for balance. Women candidates are more winnable in Lok Sabha elections, and in every single General Election since 1952,  as the Election Commission data shows (attached.)”
Shakti also announced the Shakti-Neta App survey from 15th January 2019 that was answered by 10 lakh registered voters across the rural, urban, women, men and youth demographic. The response to “Do you want more women MPs in Lok Sabha in 2019” was an emphatic 82.2% YES across 24 states. Attached are the states-wise results.
The first panel deliberated on “Promoting Women Candidates for the Lok Sabha Election,” moderated by Priya Sehgal, Editor NewsX.
Divya Spandana, Social Media Chair of the INC, said that “She was the youngest in Parliament when elected in the 2013 by-poll and yet there were detractors that a woman was chosen to lead the Social Media Cell of the INC. I think the bill really needs to pass there is no other way. ”
Divya Spandana made an open appeal to Shakti to “Create a mass movement for women across parties to come together. We, in Congress, we all will join you and march for the Women’s Reservation Bill to pass, no matter who comes to power.”

Shaina NC, BJP spokesperson from Maharashtra, was candid, “The numbers are appalling and until that is fixed, it is tokenism even if we have a Defence Minister or even a Prime Minister. Women must unite and really think about how we can build pressure within the parties. We don’t want charity. Politics is tough on the bladder for sure but women are now breaking all the stereotypes in politics by working late hours. Women must vote for women candidates.”
Kanimozhi, Rajya Sabha MP from Tamil Nadu revealed that, “To be taken seriously itself is a big achievement for a woman. She has to be at least twice as intelligent twice as hard working!  Party workers told my father not to put women candidates, as they won’t help them campaign – such perceptions exist. The political space is not used to accommodating women, and is completely woven around the male way of looking at processes and policies. It is not inclusive at all, and like every other field women will have to break the glass ceiling. We need women to work across ideology & party lines and support each other in Parliament to help this change.”

Radhika Ramaseshan, Sr Journalist commented that, “Despite numbers of women MPs across Indian states being abysmal, I’m really concerned about women politicians of the North. Dimple Yadav is the only new woman leader we have. I remember covering an election in TN and meeting a woman sarpanch, the sole breadwinner and with an alcoholic husband. She cut him off when he tried to interject in her governance.”
Smita Gupta of The Hindu Centre for Public Policy, called out the importance of the threshold, “Patriarchy exists in all parties whether they call themselves left, right or centre. If you have 181 women in Lok Sabha the whole power dynamic will change – you have to look at panchayats where there is critical mass – the first term they learn the ropes and then they can perform really well.”
The second panel, moderated by Neha Dixit, Independent Journalist, focused on what it would take to build a women’s vote bloc.
Jagmati Sangwan, ex General Secretary of the AIDWA, who recently contested Mayoral elections in Rohtak, Haryana, pointed out the damned if you do, damned if you don’t situation for women leaders, “More women are agitating at ground level for wages, participation is there but representation is not there! In fighting for women’s rights and against oppression, the sexist campaign by men against me was that if you vote for Jagmati she will put eve teasers in jail!  Without Women’s Reservation Bill, it cannot be done in such a severely patriarchal society. There is still time; I appeal to BJP to realise their promise and pass the Bill.”

Lalitha Kumaramangalam, ex Chairperson of the National Commission of Women, and of the BJP,  suggested a formula for the women’s vote bloc: “More and more women, especially in rural areas, are becoming assertive in running their own lives and want economic independence. We have to talk to women voters as women, not as caste or any other identity. Women prefer women candidates but women in parties are not trained on how to aggressively demand the vote. Elections are won in last two weeks- how do you do it? Alcohol, violence against women, and jobs are the three most binding issues of women voters.”
Sushmita Dev, Member of Parliament, Silchar, Assam and President of the All India Mahila Congress reminded us that “Patriarchy begins at home. Less politicians begins at less women at colleges, and the emancipation of women starts with economic empowerment. The worst thing you can do to women empowerment is tokenism. For instance, when access to justice is the biggest challenge women are facing today, unless we address the actual delivery of justice, even passing laws is tokenism. Make  a man into the WCD Minister; that’s a start! Men in Parliament are asking why should we vacate our seats for women . If you increase seats in the Lok Sabha, they will have no issues with more women.”
The session concluded with Shakti committing to ramp up citizen pressure in the run up to the elections, pledging to promote and support women candidates, and optimistic that many more women will be contesting Lok Sabha elections in 2019.
Shakti is a non partisan inclusive platform of women across who have joined hands, regardless of region, caste, creed, ideology and setting aside our differences with single minded objective to get more women elected as MLAs and MPs. Shakti calls upon all men and women that believe in fair representation in politics to join us on bit.ly/shakti-india

JDS workers pelt stones on Hassan BJP MLA’s residence

February 13, 2019 by Nasheman

Hassan BJP MLA Preetham Gowda’ supporter has been injured in stone pelting by Janata Dal (Secular) workers at MLA’s residence on Wednesday. Reacting to the incident Preetham Gowda said that Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy has instructed his party workers to harm my family and murder him.

State BJP chief BS Yeddyurappa said that BJP will hold protest in Hassan to condemn the attack on BJP MLA Preetham Gowda’s residence. While condemning the attack, Yeddyurappa said attempts are being made to intimidate opposition leaders.

The lone BJP MLA from JDS-dominant Hassan district, Preetham Gowda allegedly made controversial remarks against JD(S) chief and former prime minister HD Deve Gowda in BS Yeddyurappa’s audio clip, according to reports. CM Kumaraswamy has written to Speaker Ramesh Kumar indicating that his office had been brought into disrepute in the recordings. “Hassan MLA Preetham Gowda (of BJP) was also present. The words I have heard have hurt me deeply. I could not have imagined that a member of the Legislature would speak in such a manner about the Speaker. I have sent the recording to you. As the Leader of the House, I would like you to consider the recordings and take suitable action as per law,” Wrote CM Kumaraswamy.

‘Feel like rape survivor,’ says Speaker K R Ramesh

February 13, 2019 by Nasheman

Karnataka assembly speaker KR Ramesh Kumar compared himself to a “rape survivor” having to undergo repeated questioning as he referred to repeated charges against him being part of the controversial audio tapes, over which government has announced a special investigative team or an SIT.

On Tuesday, the speaker, pointing to repeated reference to charges against him, said his “situation was like that of a rape victim, as they too are supposedly questioned about the incident repeatedly”.

A day before, Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy had announced an SIT probe into the audio clip in which BJP Karnataka chief BS Yeddyurappa is reportedly heard luring a JD(S) legislator in what the Congress-JD(S) government describes as the party’s attempt to topple their coalition.

Kumaraswamy had accepted an “advice” by an emotional speaker to constitute an SIT to probe the episode to “establish the truth” as his name has also been dragged with the charge that he had been “booked” for Rs. 50 crore.

The stand-off between the government and opposition continued in the assembly today as the BJP stuck to its strong opposition to the SIT, saying it could be used for “political vengeance”.

“Let’s discuss and try to find a solution,” the speaker announced as he adjourned the assembly proceedings to Wednesday morning.

The speaker’s decision came after Mr Yeddyurappa, the leader of the opposition, pointed out that no effort was made by the Chair to seek the opinion of the opposition before deciding on the investigation agency to inquire into the case.

“SIT is being imposed on us forcefully,” he said.

Yeddyurappa expressed apprehensions about the SIT as it comes under the Chief Minister and said he was firm on his stand to quit politics if it was proved he was present during conversations between the persons in the audio on a “Rs. 50 crore offer to book” the speaker, as alleged by HD Kumaraswamy.

Accusing the Chief Minister of hatching a conspiracy against him by “twisting facts”, he said Kumaraswamy has released the audio partially, to save his seat.

The BJP has objected to the SIT and insisted on constituting a House committee or a judicial probe. They also said that the probe cannot be conducted by an agency that is under the Chief Minister as he too was a party in the case.

The political war over charges of horse-trading had escalated in Karnataka on Friday with Mr Kumaraswamy releasing the audio clip.

As the House met for the day, opposition members requested the Chair to reconsider the decision to hand over the probe to the SIT.

Former Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar alleged that Kumaraswamy was behind the audio conversation as he was the one who sent Sharan Gouda, son of the MLA Naganagouda, who was being lured and he also heard the conversation between the two individuals via a conference call.

“So the CM is the offender, he is the first accused in the case,” he said.

Another senior BJP member Madhu Swamy, questioning the constitution of the SIT, said the probe report can only be submitted to court by the SIT and not to the government or the Chair.

Mr Kumaraswamy expressed surprise about being called A1 by BJP in the case and said that since the leader of the opposition and other members have called him accused, “at least to punish me, a comprehensive inquiry has to happen.”

Claiming complete confidence of the Congress and JD(S) legislators, Mr Kumaraswamy spoke of the need to amend the anti-defection law and said if an elected legislator resigns, he should not be allowed to contest elections for five years.

The chief minister said he was also ready for a discussion on the alleged 2014 video CD about the cash for vote allegedly involving him, which was raised by the BJP.
