Former India skipper Anup Kumar retires from Kabaddi

December 20, 2018 by Nasheman

 (21:02)

Panchkula (Haryana), India’s former World Cup winning captain Anup Kumar on Wednesday announced his retirement from Kabaddi, ending a 15-year iconic career.

Anup announced his retirement ahead of a Pro Kabaddi League (PKL) season 6 match, where he represents the Jaipur Pink Panthers.

A veteran in his sport, Arjuna Awardee, Anup began his international career in 2006 at the South Asian Games in Sri Lanka. He was part of the national team that won gold medals in 2010 and 2014.

Thereafter, he captained the national team in 2014 and it was during his tenure that the team won 2 gold medals at the Incheon Asian Games in 2014 and the Kabaddi World Cup in 2016.

In season 2 of the Pro Kabaddi League, Anup captained U Mumba and led the team to victory.

Announcing his retirement, Anup said: “I started playing kabaddi because I liked it and it was a great hobby, over the years a hobby became the most important part of my life.”

“The day I took to playing kabaddi professionally, I had one dream, to represent my country and bring back a gold medal, I am one of the few lucky people who had the opportunity to accomplish the most important dream of my life.”

“Today, with the PKL, the magnitude of the sport has grown leaps and bounds and I could not be happier than to watch and grow and be a part of this journey. This platform is an extremely important aspect of my life and that is why today I use the platform to make this announcement,” an emotional Anup added.

Anup further said that he will aim to be associated with the sport even after he hangs his boots.

“Coincidentally, today is also the 10th birthday of my son, and that makes this date even more memorable. Going forward, if there is anything I am confident about, it is knowing that I will always want to be connected to the sport,” he said.

Reacting to the announcement, PKL League Commissioner Anupam Goswami said: “This is a great decision by a great player from a great stage of kabaddi. It is also for the first time a senior player has announced his retirement of his playing career during an ongoing season of Pro Kabaddi.”

“Just shows the importance kabaddi players attach to a league like Pro Kabaddi. Anup of course has been a senior player and a role model athlete for this sport. We totally respect his decision,” Goswami added.

NITI Aayog draws road map for $5-tn Indian economy

December 20, 2018 by Nasheman

Array

New Delhi, Growth rate at 8 per cent, investment at 36 per cent, and agripreneurs, codification of labour laws and revamping of minerals exploration policy are the prescribed drivers for India to become a $5-trillion economy by 2030, as per NITI Aayog.

Drawing inspiration and direction from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s clarion call for making a New India by 2022, NITI Aayog — the government’s premier think tank — released a strategy document detailing a comprehensive agenda for India on Wednesday.

“The overarching focus of the strategy document is to further improve the policy environment in which private investors and other stakeholders can contribute their fullest towards achieving the goals set out for New India 2022 and propel India towards a USD 5-trillion economy by 2030,” the document said.

The detailed exposition in “Strategy for New India @75” (India turns 75 in 2022) across 41 crucial areas recognises the progress already made, identifies binding constraints and suggests the way forward for achieving the clearly stated objectives.

Seeking a “Jan Andolan” (people’s movement) for economic transformation to become the New India, the document, released by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, prescribes a growth rate of 8 per cent over the next five years during 2018-23.

“Steadily accelerate the gross domestic product (GDP) growth rate to achieve a target of about 8 per cent during 2018-23. This will raise the economy’s size in real terms from USD 2.7 trillion in 2017-18 to nearly USD 4 trillion by 2022-23.

“Besides having rapid growth, which reaches 9-10 per cent by 2022-23, it is also necessary to ensure that growth is inclusive, sustained, clean and formalised,” the document said.

The investment rate should be raised from 29 per cent to 36 per cent of GDP — which has been achieved in the past — by 2022-23. It also said exports of goods and services combined should be increased from $478 billion in 2017-18 to $800 billion by 2022-23.

The 41 chapters have been disaggregated under four sections namely drivers, infrastructure, inclusion and governance.

With a special focus on farming, the document suggests converting farmers into “agripreneurs” by further expanding e-National Agriculture Markets and replacing the Agricultural Produce Marketing Committee Act with the Agricultural Produce and Livestock Marketing Act.

“Give a strong push to ‘Zero Budget Natural Farming’ techniques that reduce costs, improve land quality and increase farmers’ incomes. This has emerged as a tested method for putting environment carbon back into the land,” it said.

It also favours complete codification of labor laws and a massive effort to upscale and expand apprenticeships to ensure maximum employment creation.

Further, the document suggests launching a mission “Explore in India” by revamping minerals exploration and licensing policy.

The second section on infrastructure deals with the physical foundations of growth which are crucial to enhancing the competitiveness of Indian business as also ensuring ease of living for the citizens.

It suggested expediting the establishment of the Rail Development Authority (RDA), which is already approved. RDA will advise or make informed decisions on an integrated, transparent and dynamic pricing mechanism for the railways, it said.

“Double the share of freight transported by coastal shipping and inland waterways. Initially, viability gap funding will be provided until the infrastructure is fully developed. Develop an IT-enabled platform for integrating different modes of transport and promoting multi-modal and digitised mobility,” it added.

Further, as part of infrastructure, it suggested completing BharatNet programme in 2019, which will digitally connect all 2.5 lakh Gram Panchayats in the country.

Aim to deliver all government services at the state, district and gram panchayat level digitally by 2022-23, it said.

The section on inclusion deals with investing in the capabilities of all citizens of India. Three themes in this section are health, education and mainstreaming of traditionally marginalised sections of the population.

Successful execution of government-run healthcare programmes Ayushman Bharat and Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Abhiyaan will be a prerequisite for the New India, it said.

“Upgrade the quality of the school education system and skills, including the creation of a new innovation ecosystem at the ground level by establishing at least 10,000 Atal Tinkering Labs by 2020,” it said and suggested to have an electronic national educational registry for tracking each child’s learning outcomes.

It also talked about offering affordable housing in urban areas to improve workers’ living conditions and to ensure equity while providing a strong impetus to economic growth.

The document also delved into how the governance structures can be streamlined and processes optimised to achieve better developmental outcomes.

Online health consultation app launched in UP

December 20, 2018 by Nasheman

[Nasheman news] LucknowIn a bid to reach out to the far-flung areas and provide healthcare to people living in the countryside, India’s largest online health camp, myUpchar, launched its “Saathi” app and “Health Card” in the state capital on Wednesday.

“Under the new model, myUpchar has a partner in the operating villages along with a team of volunteers and support staff, who collect the basic details like weight, height, blood pressure, glucose, pulse and temperature, and shares those on the app with the doctor,” an official said.

During the launch event, the company declared that the users of this healthcare app are mostly from Lucknow, hence the launch event was organised in the capital city of Uttar Pradesh.

In view of the upcoming trends of online healthcare services in different cities, myUpchar decided to launch it for the rural population. In the near future, myUpchar will be participating in the healthcare awareness and soon bring in e-clinic networks.

“The focus of myUpchar is to solve the real healthcare problems in rural India where there are negligible healthcare facilities. Unlike other healthcare companies who serve only the elite class people, myUpchar is putting in every effort and hard work to solve the healthcare problems of the rural population in our country,” portal’s co-funder Rajat Garg said.

Further elaborating, he said: “The demand for online healthcare services is more in Lucknow as compared to the other cities of India. Every month, 11 per cent of Lucknow’s population has been seen urging for online healthcare services, which inspired us to launch ‘Saathi’ as well as ‘Health Card’ in Lucknow.”

Jammu and Kashmir to come under President’s rule from Thursday

December 20, 2018 by Nasheman

New Delhi, President’s rule will be imposed in Jammu and Kashmir from Wednesday midnight with President Ram Nath Kovind signing a proclamation to give effect to the recommendation of the state Governor Satya Pal Malik.

Home Ministry officials said that Kovind has signed the proclamation based on the proposal sent by the ministry following a report by the state governor.

The term of Governor’s Rule, imposed in the state in June this year, comes to an end on Wednesday.

The state had plunged into a political crisis in June this year after BJP withdrew from the coalition government with People’s Democratic Party. Last month Malik dissolved the state assembly which had been kept in suspended animation.

Under the provisions of Jammu and Kashmir Constitution, Governor’s rule can be imposed for six months, but with consent of the President. The Constitution grants special status to Jammu and Kashmir.

Google denies it altered YouTube code to slow down Microsoft Edge

December 20, 2018 by Nasheman

San Francisco,  Google has denied it altered YouTube code to break Microsoft Edge, thus slowing down its performance while users streamed YouTube videos — a claim made by a former Microsoft intern.

Microsoft Edge is a graphical web browser included in Windows 10, Windows 10 Mobile and Xbox One devices, replacing Internet Explorer as the default web browser.

According to a report in The Verge on Wednesday, Google disputed the claims made by Joshua Bakita, a former software engineering intern at Microsoft, who said that the company added a “hidden empty div over YouTube videos” that slowed down streaming on Microsoft Edge.

According to Google, it merely fixed a bug in YouTube.

“YouTube does not add code designed to defeat optimizations in other browsers, and works quickly to fix bugs when theya¿re discovered,” a YouTube spokesperson was quoted as saying.

Microsoft, however, was yet to comment on the specific claim made by its former intern.

“Google has been a helpful partner and we look forward to the journey as we work on the future of Microsoft Edge,” it told The Verge.

Earlier, in a post on Hacker News, Bakita revealed details of a YouTube incident that convinced some Edge browser engineers that Google added code to purposely break compatibility.

“One of the reasons we (Microsoft) decided to end EdgeHTML was because Google kept making changes to its sites that broke other browsers, and we couldn’t keep up,” claimed Bakita.

Google added a “hidden empty div over YouTube videos” that affected Microsoft’s hardware acceleration for videos, he added.

A Mozilla Firefox programme manager also claimed recently that a separate YouTube redesign made the site “5x slower in Firefox and Edge.”

Earlier this month, Microsoft said it plans to adopt the Chromium open source project for the development of its Edge browser.

Farm loan waiver just palliative, not solution: NITI Aayog

December 20, 2018 by Nasheman

New Delhi,  On Congress chief Rahul Gandhi’s demand for loan waivers for farmers, NITI Aayog Vice Chairman Rajiv Kumar on Wednesday said farm loan waivers are just a palliative and not a long-term solution for the farming community.

However, he said short-term measures might be required in some states that are facing real farm distress. The Centre does not take a pan-India view on the issue as it would not be fair for farmers in states where the loan exposure is very less.

“Farm loan waiver is not a solution. It’s just a palliative. This is a state government prerogative whether they want to give the farm loan waivers, as agriculture is a state subject,” Kumar said on the sidelines of release of NITI Aayog’s “New India – 2022” strategic document.

“The states have to look into their own fiscal resources and go ahead with what they want to do. In states, where there is a genuine and real farm distress, some short-term measures would have to be taken. This is in that nature, it’s not a long- term solution for the farmers’ problem or for agricultural modernisation,” he said.

On the employment data that the NITI Aayog has been working on, he said the actual data on employment would be out in “a fraction of a year” after the Central Statistics Office (CSO) completes its household survey for both rural and urban employments.

As for the liquidity concerns in the economy and the possibility of rate cut by the Reserve Bank of India, Kumar said the current inflation figures, which are well below the target of four per cent, itself call for a rate cut to support liquidity and growth in the economy.

Further, on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s announcement that 99 per cent items could soon see 18 per cent Goods and Services Tax (GST) or less, Kumar said: “About 97 per cent of the items are already at or below 18 per cent GST and as the taxbase widens and there is a revenue buoyancy, 99 per cent of items can come below 18 per cent tax, leaving only the non-merit items like cigarettes and alcohol in the above 18 per cent category.”

Amazon slammed for selling doormats with Golden Temple image

December 20, 2018 by Nasheman

Washington, Online retail giant Amazon has been slammed by several Sikh bodies for reportedly selling doormats, rugs and toilet accessories bearing the image of the highly-revered Golden Temple and was asked to immediately remove the “disrespectful products” that hurt the sentiments of the community worldwide.

Prominent community body in the US, the Sikh Coalition, said in a statement on Tuesday that it was alerted to Amazon selling doormats, rugs and toilet seat covers with the image of Golden Temple.

In response, the civil rights organisation said it “immediately contacted Amazon to remove the products while detailing the culturally insensitive problems with the items being sold and the offensive message it sent to Sikhs around the world”.

“The Golden Temple is not a doormat,” it tweeted, adding that in the hours since, through community outreach, several pages had been removed from the Amazon portal.

Another group, NGO United Sikhs, issued a statement calling on Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos to do the same and said it had received “numerous complaints” from members of the community about the products.

Some of the items had been removed from the website on Wednesday, but the Golden Temple toilet accessories remained available, the group said.

“It’s shocking and extremely disappointing that Amazon offers these products for sale,” said United Sikhs operations manager Rajesh Singh.

“The merchandise featuring the disrespectful placement of Darbar Sahib shows a total lack of understanding on behalf of Amazon and its employees. We demand Bezos address this issue immediately.”

The group offered “Sikh awareness training” in “an effort to educate Amazon’s staff and prevent anti-Sikh products from being sold on the site in the future”.

It also “reached out to the manufacturers of the merchandise to demand their production to be ceased immediately”.

Congress may not last full term in MP, hints Shivraj

December 20, 2018 by Nasheman

[Nasheman news] Bhopal Former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has hinted at his “earlier than expected comeback” to the treasury benches as the Kamal Nath-led Congress government may not last its full term of five years.

Chouhan was meeting his supporters on his last night at the Chief Minister’s residence late on Wednesday, when he assured them and said: “Don’t worry about your future. Don’t be despondent over what will happen to you, for I will be back.”

As Bharatiya Janata Party workers shouted slogans of Chouhan’s return in five years, the former Chief Minister, who ruled the state for three straight terms before being ousted in a close contest in the aeeembly elections, said in Bollywood style: “Tiger abhi zinda hai (The King is till alive).”

“Maybe it will not take an entire five years, may be I will be back sooner than you expect,” Chouhan added.

The Congress won 114 seats in the 230-member House. It fell two short of the magic number in a contest with the BJP (109) that went down to the wire.

However, the Congress ensured the support of 121 MLAs with the Samajwadi Party (1), Bahujan Samaj Party (2) and four Independents backing it.

ICC asks PCB to pay compensation to BCCI

December 20, 2018 by Nasheman

Dubai, (IANS) The International Cricket Council on Wednesday asked the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to pay the BCCI nearly 60 percent of the legal costs after losing their bid to claim compensation for cancelled bilateral series.

Last month, the PCB had asked the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to pay around $63 million for pulling out of two bilateral series in 2014 and 2015, which was rejected by the ICC’s Dispute Resolution Committee (DRC).

According to norm, the winning party claims legal costs from the losing side.

“The DRC has determined that the PCB should pay 60 percent of “(a) the (BCCI’s) Claimed Costs; and (b) the administrative costs and expenses of the Panel… (including, without limitation, the fees of the Tribunal members, and the costs and expenses they incurred in relation to this matter), the figure whereof is to be supplied to the PCB by the ICC,” Cricinfo quoted the ICC as saying.

Both boards have not yet disclosed the actual amount to be paid by the PCB.

“The PCB notes the ICC Dispute Panel’s decision on BCCI’s claims for their legal expense incurred on the PCB-BCCI dispute,” the PCB said in a statement.

“The award of significantly lesser costs than claimed by BCCI reflects that PCB’s case had merits. The PCB, however, reiterates its disappointment in the original decision/award given against it,” the board added.
