Only 2 per cent women promoted to lead tech teams: Survey

December 17, 2018 by Nasheman

Image result for Only 2 per cent women promoted to lead tech teams: Survey

Bengaluru,  (IANS) Despite an increase in the number of women excelling in the tech world, women still remain highly underrepresented with just 2 per cent being promoted to leadership roles, a survey revealed on Monday.

The survey titled “Women in Technology 2018: Breaking Gender Barriers” conducted by HackerEarth, an innovation management and talent assessment company, explored the state of women technologists across the globe and the challenges faced by them in the workplace.

It shows that only one-third of all tech teams comprised of women, demonstrating a stark disparity in the number of women employed by tech organisations.

Despite 86 per cent of the study respondents having a formal degree in computer science, most experienced a stagger in their career growth, and only 2 per cent could make it to the top roles.

“While the number of women graduating in CS has been on a steady rise, when it comes to career growth, the numbers are staggeringly low,” Vivek Prakash, CTO and Co-Founder, HackerEarth, said in a statement.

“Implementing policies to support women in the workplace and providing them with training and resources will help reduce the high attrition rates we have observed amongst women technologists,” Prakash added.

In a bid to seek work with emerging technologies, flexibility as well as better pay, more than 50 per cent women developers were found to move to a new job.

Importantly, 50 per cent of the women technologists believed that “gendered wordings” in job adverts discouraged them from applying for technical positions.

Solutions such as blind recruitments, building family-oriented policies, and upskilling opportunities will help women excel in their careers and reduce gender disparity in every organisation, the survey suggested.

For the survey, HackerEarth surveyed over 1000 women from 35 countries holding technology positions in various organisations.

Bhopal,(IANS) Senior Congress leader Kamal Nath, who steered his party to victory in Madhya Pradesh, was on Monday sworn in as its 18th Chief Minister, bringing to an end 15 years of BJP rule in the state which had become the saffron party’s stronghold.

The nine-time MP and former union Minister was administered the oath of office and secrecy by Governor Anandiben Patel at a function held at the Jambori Maidan on a day the Delhi High Court convicted Congress leader Sajjan Kumar in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, sparking calls that Kamal Nath should not be made Chief Minister.

Accusing him of having had a hand in the riots in Delhi, the BJP and Akali Dal demanded that Kamal Nath should not be made the Chief Minister.

Asked about the demand, he told the media that he had been a Minister at the Centre in 1991 and later too but wondered why demands were being made now. “There has been no charge. There has been no case. Why now? I see a hidden hand.”

The 72-year-old Kamal Nath, who represented Chhindwara for nine terms in the Lok Sabha, was the only one to take the oath even as the other contender to the Chief Minister’s post, Jyotiraditya Scindia, was present. The ceremony was held an hour behind schedule at 2.30 p.m.

The brief ceremony was attended by Congress President Rahul Gandhi, former Prime Ministers Manmohan Singh and H.D. Deve Gowda, outgoing Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, another former BJP Chief Minister Babulal Gaur and a galaxy of national leaders in a show of opposition unity ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.

Among the opposition stalwarts present were NCP leaders Sharad Pawar and Praful Patel, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and his Karnataka counterpart H.D. Kumaraswamy, RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav, National Conference leader Farooq Abdullah, TMC leader Dinesh Trivedi, JMM chief Hemant Soren, DMK leaders M.K. Stalin, T.R. Balu and Kanimozhi, Loktantrik Janata Dal leader Shard Yadav and Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana leader and MP Raju Shetti.

Congress leaders who were present included Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, his deputy Sachin Pilot, Leader of Congress in Lok Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge, former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Digvijay Singh, Puducherry Chief Minster V. Narayanaswamy, former Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Karnataka Minister D.K, Shivakumar, Punjab Minister Navjot Singh Sidhu, UP Congress President Raj Babbar and former Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda

BSP chief Mayawati and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, whose parties have extended support to the Congress government, were conspicuous by their absence.

Earlier, Kamal Nath told the media that he had invited West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee personally but she expressed her inability because she was occupied with the rituals in connection with her mother’s death anniversary.

Before the ceremony started, Kamal Nath greeted the leaders on the stage and held Shivraj Singh Chouhan’s hand and greeted the people in which Scindia also joined. The scenes were lapped up by the hundreds of Congress activists and supporters gathered there.

Representatives of various religions including saffron-clad saints were present at the function. Among them was the ‘computer’ baba who was offered a Minister of State status by the Chouhan government.

Nalapad Haris lawyer says it’s hoodwinking tactic

December 17, 2018 by Nasheman

The Special Public Prosecutor said that he will convince Karnataka court that the Central Crime Branch can file a chargesheet as contested by Nalappad’s lawyer.

Special Public Prosecutor (SPP) Shyam Sundar has called the latest move by the lawyer of Mohammed Nalapad, the accused in the high profile Farzi Cafe assault case, a ‘hoodwinking tactic’. Nalapad’s lawyer has secured a stay for eight weeks from the Karnataka High Court on the criminal proceedings against him in the attempt to murder case.  Speaking to media, Shyam Sundar, who was appointed as an SPP, said, “They (Nalapad and lawyer) have kept us in dark. What they have done is wrong and moved the court without serving me. As there is a Special Prosecutor in the case, he has no business to move the court without letting us know. We are going to file a complaint with the court, as this is a matter of great impropriety. They should not have done it. We will explain to the court that this is nothing but a hoodwink tactic from the petitioner.” While seeking dismissal of the case, Nalapad’s lawyers had claimed that the Central Crime Branch (CCB) was not a recognised police station according to the Criminal Procedure Code and hence, it cannot file a chargesheet.

When asked if the case will be dismissed on the ground that the CCB cannot file a chargesheet, Shyam Sundar said, “It (Nalappad council’s version) does not have a legal standing. For now, they have tried to convince the court of some technical reason, but we will demystify that. If this kind of interpretation is made, then it will defeat the very purpose of the dispensation of justice.” He added, “Apparently in one or two cases in the past, a single stay has been granted but we will convince the court that the CCB can file a chargesheet.”  Son of Congress MLA NA Haris, Mohammed Nalapad is currently out on bail after he was arrested on February 19, two days after he and his friends allegedly assaulted Vidvat, the son of a prominent businessman, at Farzi Café, an uptown café in Bengaluru, over a minor altercation. He is charged with attempt to murder (Section 307) and other sections of the Indian Penal Code.

K’taka sugar factory explosion that killed 6 people behind Faulty valve suspected

Officials are suspecting that a faulty valve may have been responsible for the sugar factory explosion which happened in north Karnataka on Sunday, which left six dead and another five injured.

According to initial reports, a faulty valve led to an excess build-up of gas, which led to the boiler explosion. “Technical experts from Belagavi are conducting an investigation into the incident. The report is expected within a day or two,” said Deputy Commissioner KG Shantaram, speaking to media.

On Sunday, at least six people were left dead and another five injured after an explosion occurred in a sugar factory in Bagalkot district. The factory located in Mudhol taluk’s Kulali village is allegedly owned by former BJP minister and Bilgi MLA, Murugesh Nirani.

“This kind of an explosion is very rare. It is the chief engineers who take care of this delicate unit every day. We can therefore say for sure that this incident is not a result of negligence on the part of employees or factory owners,” stated factory MD Siddarth Wadennavar

Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy told officials in the district to shift those injured to hospitals and asked for an investigation to look into the accident. A statement from his office said, “The death of the six people in the blast in the sugar factory is saddening. Bagalkot district officials have been directed to conduct a probe and submit a report. The state government will provide compensation to the deceased’s kin.”

The incident occurred just two days after at least 13 people died after eating prasadam served at a temple in Chamarajnagar. Another 80 have been admitted to hospitals and are being treated.

Cracks on a pillar number 155 on the stretch of Namma Metro on M G Road.

Dy CM,Dr.G.Parameshwara with MD, BMRCL,Ajay Seth inspects metro pillar,155 rules out panic situation says Namma Metro is Safe
Cracks observed in same pillar in 2012 and were repaired, says BMRCL.
The Bengaluru Namma Metro has been a boon to lakhs of commuters in the traffic choked city but there has been some concern of late over what appeared to be cracks on a pillar number 155 on the stretch of Namma Metro on Mahatma Gandhi Road.
Eight years after the Purple Line of Namma Metro became functional, one of the pillars has developed cracks and a slider which is holding the bridge together has got dislocated.
A routine inspection had revealed a honeycomb in the diaphragm wall of the pillar, which forced BMRCL to take precautionary measures by providing temporary support structures around the pillar. As an additional precaution the speed of the trains was also asked to be reduced.
These steps raised doubts whether travelling in the namma metro was still safe? The continous media coverage as well as speculations on social media forced the BMRCL to call for a press conference on Friday to allay all fears regarding the safety of metro structures.
According to Ajay Seth, an inspection team on Sunday night detected a honeycomb formation in a diaphragm wall of pillar 155 near Trinity Station.
Speaking to Media BMRCL Managing Director, Ajay Seth with Chief public relations office, BL Yashavanth Chavan,  and other officers at a press conference told media persons that,”BMRCL takes the responsibility on it for public safety very seriously and no compromise is made on it. News items have drawn attention to apparent gaps between viaducts pillars, we would like to allay such anxiety arising out of lack of information. The gaps between viaducts are part of the design and well within the prescribed standards and we reassure that there was no need to panic. We are preparing an action plan to be implemented but I would like to assure all commuters that all the metro structures are fully safe and all possible care is being taken.

BMRCL has now taken a decision to shut metro services on Dec 22nd and 23rd in order to complete the restoration work. Being a weekend, the metro authorities hope that inconvenience is minimised. It has also promised to help commuters by increasing BMTC services on routes in this direction. The temporary barricades raised have reduced the space on the road which has also caused inconvenience to commuters by slowing traffic near the trinity metro station junction. We have not finalised the date when we will suspend services as yet but, once we do, we will inform the public in advance. We will plan for any curtailment of services on December 22 and 23, to avoid any inconvenience to office-goers.Free shuttle bus services will be provided between MG Road and Indiranagar on days when services on the section are suspended.A honeycomb is a formation of gaps in cement structures. The honeycomb was found in the metro pillar as part of a routine inspection of the metro tracks. Authorities also noted that during the inspection they had found that the slider (concrete slabs in a structure) supported by Pillar no 155, had moved from its original position. In 2012, just a year after the Baiyappanahalli to MG Road train began plying, BMRCL had found an issue with the same pillar and had narrowed it down to honeycomb formation.Back then, we were unable to determine the exact cause but had narrowed it down to honeycomb formation. It was repaired and there were no problems until recently,” Ajay Seth said.
Officials from the BMRCL had earlier said that it would take 10 days to fix the issue and that in the meantime, services would be affected. Operations will tentatively be stopped next weekend on December 22 and December 23 between MG Road and Indiranagar stations, and maintenance work will be carried out at night.
A special team has been formed to investigate and measure how over a period of time, the vibrations will increase or decrease the sturdiness of the pillar. They are looking to see whether there was negligence during construction or whether the quality of materials was substandard. But there have been so many protocols which were not followed and it would be difficult to find out,” the official added.
Meanwhile, Bengaluru Development Minister,Dr G Parameshwara went on a ride in the purple line from Vidhana soudha to Trinity Metro Station, to check whether passengers are being incovenienced.
Dr.G.Parameshwara,Deputy Chief Minister and Home Minister of karnataka state with MD,Ajay Seth and Senior officers as,Seemanth Kumar Singh,P.Harishekaran,Rahul S,D.Devaraj,Jagadeesh was accompanied and after inspecting the pillar number 155 on the Trinity circle and after collecting the stock of the situation Parameshwara told media persons that,For safety purpose bearings are used to place cross beams on the top of the pillar. But now it has come to light that the bearing has moved slightly there is nothing to worry,Experts from Delhi metro and Indian Institute of Science will suggest to us on how to fix this after receiving the report action will be taken against the concerned contractor for the mistake. Now our priority is to recapture the trust we have lost and prove ourselves right he added.
The BJP, MP,PC Mohan has also inspected the pillar near Trinity Metro Station on Saturday evening. After inspecting the spot he said,i have Inspected the damaged pillar of Metro rail and urged officials to take steps to repair the damage and instill confidence among users. Will speak to Shri.Hardeep Singh Puri,Union Urban Development Minister to send a team of experts to help Bengaluru Metro team. I was accompanied by MLAs Suresh Kumar and Ashwath Narayana with Prakash and other party leaders he added.

“The Congress has invited Kumaraswamy of the Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S) to attend the oath-taking of Gehlot and Nath as an alliance partner of the coalition government in the state,” said the official in a statement.

Kumaraswamy will first fly to Jaipur by a special aircraft and attend the swearing-in of Gehlot as Chief Minister and Sachin Pilot as Deputy Chief Minister of Rajasthan at Albert Hall Museum in the Pink city at 10.30 a.m.

Congress President Rahul Gandhi, Gehlot and their party leaders attended Kumaraswamy’s swearing-in on May 23 after the ruling parties forged a post-poll alliance to form the JD-S-Congress coalition government following a split verdict in the May 12 state assembly elections on May 15.

State unit Congress leader G. Parameshawara was also sworn-in as the southern state’s Deputy Chief Minister along with Kumaraswamy on the ramparts of the state secretariat (Vidhana Soudha) in the city centre.

Congress must explain why it spread lies about Rafale deal: Irani

Image result for Congress must explain why it spread lies about Rafale deal: Irani

Kolkata, (IANS) Amid the row over the Supreme Court verdict on Rafale jet deal, Union Minister Smriti Irani on Monday demanded an explanation from the Congress as to why it tried to play with matters of national security and create doubts about the credibility of the Indian Air Force by spreading “constant lies” in the last one year.

Targeting Congress President Rahul Gandhi, who has been relentlessly attacking the Narendra Modi government at the Centre over the defence deal with a French company, Irani said the Congress leader must reveal his source of information about the alleged anomalies in the deal.

For the last one year Congress has been playing with the nation’s security by spreading a series of lies regarding the Rafale deal.

“However, lies do not last long. The Honourable Supreme Court has exposed the lies spread by Congress on this issue in front of the whole nation after scrutinising all the aspects of the deal,” Irani told the reporters at the state BJP headquarters here.

“Rahul Gandhi must tell people, who was his source of information? Who inspired him to humiliate the Indian Air Force, and defame the country on international platforms,” she added.

4 transgenders denied Sabarimala visit, meet HC-appointed member

Thiruvananthapuram,  (IANS) Four transgenders, who were denied permission to visit the Sabarimala temple a day ago, on Monday approached a Kerala High Court-appointed top police official here and insisted they wanted to go to the shrine wearing sarees.

After meeting Director General of Police A. Hemachandran, Ananya told the media that they have placed their demand before the DGP, and wished to pray in the dress of their choice — a saree.

“He (Hemachandran) has said he will check with the other two committee members and get back to us.

“We have insisted on the dress of our choice for the darshan — to be allowed in saree when visiting the temple,” said Ananya.

On Sunday, the four-member transgender team, who came from Ernakulam was stopped by the police at Erumely, the first base camp of the temple town.

The police first told them that if they changed into men’s attire, they would be allowed. However, later the police refused them permission to visit the Lord Ayyappa shrine.

Ananya said they were subjected to ridicules, threats and were asked to return by the police.

From there the team went and complained to the Kottayam Superintendent of Police, A. Harishankar.

On Monday, they arrived in the state capital to meet Hemachandran.

The Kerala High Court on November 27 had set up a three-member observer panel to oversee the Sabarimala pilgrimage season, after numerous complaints surfaced against the manner in which the police was acting in the temple town.

Besides Hemachandran, the panel also consisted of P.R. Raman and S. Sirijagan (both retired high court judges).

The temple town has witnessed protests by Hindu groups since the September 28 Supreme Court verdict that allowed women of all ages to enter the temple, including those hitherto banned girls and women aged between 10 and 50.

Facebook blocked Netanyahu’s son for anti-Muslim posts

December 17, 2018 by Nasheman

Tel Aviv, (IANS) Facebook temporarily banned Yair Netanyahu, son of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, for posting anti-Muslim posts, the media reported on Monday.

According to a report in The Times of Israel, Yair’s Facebook account was blocked for 24 hours on Sunday after he called for “avenging the deaths” of two Israel Defense Forces (IDF) soldiers who were killed at the West Bank shooting last week.

“Unbelievable. Facebook blocks me for 24 hours for simply criticizing it! Thought police,” Yari wrote on Twitter.

Facebook is yet to comment on this.

After the controversial Facebook post was removed, he wrote that the social media giant was “trying to shut our mouths in the only place where we have the right to express our opinions”.

Yari also posted a screenshot of the original post along with new posts criticising Facebook.

“Do you know where there are no terror attacks? In Iceland and Japan. Coincidentally there’s also no Muslim population there,” he posted.

This is not the first time Yair has been in the spotlight.

According to The Jerusalem Post, in 2017, Yair posted a diagram featuring antisemitic tropes such as Jewish billionaire George Soros, who funds left-wing causes and organizations in several countries.

“The post depicted Soros controlling the world via other conspiracy theory figures like lizard people, known as Reptilians, and the Illuminati or Freemasons,” the report added.
