Congress will form government in Rajasthan: Gehlot, Pilot

December 11, 2018 by Nasheman

Jaipur Congress leaders Ashok Gehlot and Sachin Pilot, both contenders for the Chief Ministerial post in Rajasthan, on Tuesday expressed confidence that their party will form the government in the state with a comfortable majority and said the decision on a new Chief Minister will be taken by party chief Rahul Gandhi.

“Congress will definitely form the government,” Gehlot told the media here. Asked who will be the next Chief Minister, he said Gandhi will decide on that.

“Ask this question to Rahul Gandhi,” Gehlot, a former Chief Minister, said, adding the decision will be taken in accordance with the wishes of the newly-elected MLAs.

“There is a clear tradition in Rajasthan. There will be a meeting of legislators and their views will be taken. The central leadership has full authority. The face will emerge.”

Pilot, Rajasthan Congress chief, said: “The struggle of Congress workers and the people is being reflected in the results. We won 21 seats last time. People were unhappy over the way they faced hardships. They were unhappy with the state government and the Central government.

“The roadmap we presented was appreciated and Rahul Gandhi campaigned energetically. Congress workers worked unitedly. I am grateful to people for their blessings.”

He said the party will also form its governments in Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.

Regarding a new Chief Minister, Pilot said: “The Congress high command and the MLAs will collectively decide.

“Today is a decisive day and Rahul Gandhi became Congress chief on the same day last year. And what can be a better gift than the party forming its governments in three BJP-ruled states?”

Apple appeals against broad iPhone sales ban in China (Lead)

December 11, 2018 by Nasheman

Beijing Apple has appealed against a Chinese court ruling that banned the sale and import of most iPhone models after granting Qualcomm an injunction against Apple, a stunning decision that comes amid the trade war between the US and China, CNBC reported.

Apple accused Qualcomm of playing dirty tricks, including asserting a patent that had already been invalidated by international courts, and other patents that it had never before used.

“Qualcomm’s effort to ban our products is another desperate move by a company whose illegal practices are under investigation by regulators around the world,” Apple said in a statement on Monday.

The ban does not cover the new iPhone XS, iPhone XS Plus or iPhone XR, which were not yet available when Qualcomm, an American microchip maker, filed its lawsuit, CNN reported.

The ruling was announced publicly on Monday but put into effect last week, but Apple said in a statement that all iPhone models remain available in China.

The phones covered by the ban make up about 10 per cent to 15 per cent of current iPhone sales in China, according to Daniel Ives, analyst at Wedbush Securities.

The court granted a pair of preliminary injunctions requested by Qualcomm.

Qualcomm claims that Apple violates two of its patents in the iPhone 6S, iPhone 6S Plus, iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X.

The patents allow people to edit and resize photos on a phone and to manage apps by using a touchscreen, according to Qualcomm.

The practical effect of the injunction is not yet clear.

“If Apple is violating the orders, Qualcomm will seek enforcement of the orders through enforcement tribunals that are part of the Chinese court system,” CNN quoted Don Rosenberg, general counsel for Qualcomm, as saying on Monday.

Qualcomm applauded the ruling, saying Apple owes it money for using its technology.

Apple and Qualcomm are suing one another in courts across the world. Billions of dollars are at stake, and each side has claimed some victories.

South, North Korea to talk on co-hosting 2032 Summer Olympics

December 11, 2018 by Nasheman

Seoul South Korea and North Korea have agreed to hold working-level talks this week on sports cooperation, including the co-hosting of the 2032 Summer Olympics, Seoul’s Unification Ministry said Monday.

The sports dialogue will be held on Friday at the joint inter-Korean liaison office in North Korea’s border town of Kaesong, reports Xinhua news agency.

During the talks, the two sides would discuss details to push for the co-hosting of the 2032 Summer Olympics and the joint participation in the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics.

It was a part of efforts to implement the Pyongyang Declaration, which South Korean President Moon Jae-in and top North Korean leader Kim Jong Un signed after their third summit in Pyongyang in September.

Following the latest sports dialogue in November, the two Koreas agreed to jointly participate in international sports events and field unified sports teams through consultations with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and other international summer sports federations.

South and North Korea fielded their first unified Olympic team for the women’s ice hockey competitions at the 2018 Winter Olympics that was hosted in February by South Korea in the country’s eastern city of PyeongChang.

Ganguly lauds India’s win, says series will be competitive

December 11, 2018 by Nasheman

Kolkata, Dec 10 (IANS) Lauding India’s 31-run victory over Australia in the first Test in Adelaide, former captain Sourav Ganguly on Monday predicted the series will be a hard-fought one and all four rubbers will yield results.

“It’s an excellent win. Really credible,” Ganguly told reporters at the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) premises.

Chasing 323 for victory, Australia’s lower middle order gave a tough fight in their second innings against an inspired Indian bowling attack before being eventually bowled out for 291 just before tea on the fifth and final day.

This is India’s sixth Test win on Australian soil and is the first time they have won a series opener in Australia.

India had posted 250 in the first innings riding Cheteshwar Pujara’s 123 with Australia managing 235 in reply as Ravichandran Ashwin and Jasprit Bumrah grabbed three wickets apiece.

In the second innings, Pujara (71) starred with the bat once again as India made 307, setting the hosts a daunting target, to which they fell short. For the Aussies, off-spinner Nathan Lyon grabbed six wickets while India’s Bumrah, Ashwin and Mohammed Shami bagged three wickets.

India have never won a Test series in Australia with their best result being a 1-1 draw in the 2003-04 series under Ganguly.

There are three more Test matches to go and Ganguly predicted every match will have a winner.

“It will be a competitive series. There will be a result in every match.”

India will next play in Perth from Friday.

Congress leads in Chhattisgarh, TRS in Telangana, MNF in Mizoram

December 11, 2018 by Nasheman

New Delhi The Congress on Tuesday appeared to be on the road to victory in BJP-ruled Chhattisgarh and possibly Rajasthan and was locked in a close fight in Madhya Pradesh while the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) was headed for a landslide win in Telangana, dealing a blow to the Congress.

The Mizo National Front (MNF) looked set to unseat the Congress in Mizoram, the only state in the northeast the Congress was ruling.

As officials counted the millions of votes polled in Assembly elections in the five states whose outcome is considered significant ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, there was good news for the Congress in the Hindi heartland.

The Congress was headed for a landslide in the 90-member Chhattisgarh Assembly, with its candidates leading over their rivals in 58 constituencies to the 24 seats of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which has ruled Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh for 15 long years.

The alliance of the Janta Congress Chhattisgarh of former Chief Minister Ajit Jogi and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) were leading in seven seats.

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh was leading but all his cabinet Ministers were trailing, officials said.

In Rajasthan, the Congress was ahead in 100 of the 199 seats and the BJP in 77. But Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje said she was still confident of retaining power.

And in line with exit polls, the Congress had surged past the BJP in Madhya Pradesh, its nominees ahead in 115 of the 230 constituencies. The BJP was ahead in 104 seats. Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan seemed to be on the winning track.

The Congress-led alliance in Telangana suffered a major blow as officials counting the votes predicted that the ruling TRS was poised to get a second five-year term with a landslide. TRS nominees had taken solid leads in 95 of the 119 constituencies, crushing the opposition.

Noisy celebrations erupted outside Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao’s residence and the TRS office in Hyderabad and in other towns in the state.

In Mizoram, the Mizo National Front (MNF) was leading in 25 of the 40 seats, a clear indication that the Congress was set to lose power after a decade. Congress candidates were leading in seven seats.

Mizoram Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla was trailing in both the constituencies he contested.

Congress spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi told the media that he was confident of a Congress victory in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh and that he had “always been a little more pessimistic” about Telangana.

BJP spokesperson G.V.L. Narasimha Rao said the results were expected to turn in his party’s favour as more rounds of vote count get completed.

BSES Lok Adalats settle 4,000 power theft cases

December 10, 2018 by Nasheman

In a successful exercise designed to avoid judicial delays, Delhi’s electricity distribution company (discom) BSES has settled a large number of power theft cases with a value of around Rs 39 crore through special Lok Adalats, it announced on Monday.

The computerised Lok Adalats organised over the weekend as a paperless process by BSES Rajdhani Power Ltd (BRPL) and its sister discom in the capital, BSES Yamuna Power Ltd (BYPL), settled around 4,000 cases, according to a BSES release.

The special courts on December 9-10 were organised by the Delhi Legal Services Authority (DLSA) and BSES at three premises – the District Courts at Karkardooma, Saket, and Dwarka.

“The last over 20 Special Lok Adalats, including the ones held over the weekend, have resolved around 34,000 cases with a value of around Rs 270 crore getting settled on the spot,” it said.

BSES said the special courts provided customers in east, central, south and west Delhi a one-time opportunity for an amicable and on-the-spot settlement of cases relating to direct theft and meter tampering.

“Besides being an unprecedented hit, the Lok Adalats are also a great leveller. People from various walks of society made a beeline. From flashy cars to cycles – consumers arrived at the venues in every conceivable means of transport,” a BSES spokesperson said.

Cases that are either pending in any court of law, or are yet to be filed in any such court, were taken up by the Lok Adalats, he added.

Besides, these Lok Adalats were an environment-friendly affair.

“BSES and DSLSA took special care to make the Lok Adalats paperless and managed to save over 30,000 A4 size sheets,” the statement said.

All case documents and files were accessible from computers deployed at the 32 courts set up for the purpose, it added.

BSES also said that customers were given sufficient time to pay up in all the settled cases.

“In fact, BSES has adopted a very humane approach in this regard. The exercise was a win-win for everybody. For the customers, it meant an opportunity to amicably settle their cases. For an over-worked judiciary, it meant some burden off their courts. For BSES, it meant more people coming into the billing net,” it said.

66 kg smuggled gold seized by DRI, total seizure 2.63 tons this fiscal

December 10, 2018 by Nasheman

A total of 66 kg smuggled gold valued at Rs 21 crore was seized by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) last week, taking the total seizure to about 2.63 tons of gold for the current fiscal till November, an official statement said.

The Indian Customs had seized 3.22 tons gold during the financial year 2017-18.

“In a major operation launched by DRI against an organised smuggling syndicate, 66 kg of smuggled gold valued at about Rs 21 crore has been seized on December 6 and 7,” the Ministry of Finance said in a statement on Monday.

The seizure was made at Lucknow, Kolkata and two premises in Siliguri. In this operation, four persons were arrested and four cars used in smuggling were seized.

“A specific information was received by the DRI that a smuggling syndicate is actively engaged in smuggling of huge quantity of foreign-origin gold from Bhutan into India through Indo-Bhutan border in West Bengal and sending it to different parts of India,” it said.

On December 6, one car along with two occupants was intercepted by DRI officers after a high-speed chase near Lucknow. A search of the intercepted car resulted in the recovery and seizure of 33 bars of one kg each, valued at Rs 10.56 crore, concealed in a specially made cavity near the driver’s seat.

Of the two occupants, one was the main controller of the syndicate, the Ministry said.

In another related operation launched by DRI officers in the early hours of December 7, a car with two occupants was intercepted near Kolkata and 33 pieces of foreign-origin gold weighing 33 kg valued at Rs 10.46 crore were seized from the occupants.

“The smuggled gold was concealed in a specially built box fixed behind the dash board and also in a specially built cavity near the gearbox of the car,” it said.

In swift follow-up action at Siliguri, Rs 3.5 lakh cash, suspected to be the proceeds of smuggling, and two more cars were seized under the provisions of the Customs Act.

All the cars were found to have specially built cavities, indicating their usage for carrying smuggled gold in the past as well.

In the current fiscal 2018-19, a large number of cases of gold smuggling have been booked. During April to November, Indian Customs had seized about 2.63 tons of gold.

“During the financial year 2017-18 (April to March), Indian Customs had seized 3.22 tons gold which was 103 per cent higher than in 2016-17,” the Ministry said.

The gold is believed to be smuggled from India’s land borders with Bangladesh, Myanmar, Nepal, Bhutan and China.
