Kovind, Amarinder to lay Kartarpur corridor foundation stone next week

 Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Friday said that he and President Ram Nath Kovind will jointly lay the foundation stone of the Kartarpur corridor project in Dera Baba Nanak area of Gurdaspur district on November 26.

“Happy to share that I’ll be joining President Ram Nath Kovind ji in laying foundation stone for Kartarpur Corridor to International Border at Dera Baba Nanak, Gurdaspur, on November 26. It will be a great moment indeed for all devotees of Sri Guru Nanak Dev,” the Chief Minister tweeted.

The Union Cabinet on Thursday decided to develop the corridor from Gurdaspur in Punjab to the International Border (IB) to facilitate the passage of pilgrims to the Kartarpur Sahib gurudwara in Pakistan as part of the 550th birth annversary celebrations of the founder of Sikhism, Guru Nanak Dev, next year.

However, the Centre clarified that India’s decision was not in response to any proposal from Pakistan.

The resolution was passed after many weeks of internal consultations and preparations within the government.

The gurdwara is significant for the Sikh community since Guru Nanak Dev spent 18 years of his life in Kartarpur till he died in 1539.

It is located around 2 km from the IB between both countries and can be seen from the Indian side.

Congress distances itself from C.P. Joshi’s remarks

The Congress on Friday distanced itself from senior leader C.P. Joshi’s statement that “only Brahmins know and can talk about Hinduism” with party President Rahul Gandhi saying his remarks were against the ideology of the party and he should apologise for it.

He also warned party leaders to refrain from making any statements which may hurt sentiments of any section of the society.

“C.P. Joshi’s statement is against the ideals of the Congress party. Party leaders should refrain from making any statement which may hurt any section of the society,” Gandhi said in a tweet in Hindi.

“Respecting the principles of the party and sentiments of its workers, Joshiji would definitely realise his mistake. He should express remorse for his statement.”

Gandhi’s remarks came after a video of Joshi surfaced on Thursday in which he is heard saying that only pandits and brahmins knew about Hinduism and were learned enough to speak about it.

“Does anyone know what is the caste of Uma Bharti? What is the caste of Sadhvi Ritambhara? In this country, if anyone knows about religion, it is the pandits and the brahmins,” Joshi is heard saying in the video.

ISL: Bengaluru edge past Goa to maintain unbeaten run

Bengaluru FC accounted for FC Goa 2-1 in a fiery Indian Super League (ISL) encounter at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium here on Thursday.

Rahul Bheke opened the scoring with an improvised backheel flick in the 34th minute. Both teams were then reduced to 10 men after the restart as Mohammad Ali and Dimas Delgado were sent off.

Brandon Fernandes equalised for the hosts in the 72nd minute but Sunil Chhetri notched the winner for Bengaluru five minutes later.

The win takes Bengaluru — only unbeaten side in the ISL — level on points with FC Goa at the top of the table with two games in hand over the Gaurs.

Bengaluru had the first sight of goal after Chencho Gyeltshen and Udanta Singh combined well on the right flank. The Indian winger delivered a teasing ball across the face of goal, but Mohammad Nawaz punched it away from danger.

At the other end, Carlos Pena’s cross from the left was intercepted by Juanan at the near post but the ball fell to Hugo Boumous whose close-range shot was brilliantly saved by Gurpreet Singh.

Hugo Boumous’ defence-splitting through-ball midway through the first-half allowed Seriton Fernandes to sneak in behind the Bengaluru defence but Gurpreet was alert to the situation and got to the ball in a jiffy.

The visitors took the lead in the 34th minute when Delgado’s corner-kick fell to Xisco Hernandez at the edge of the box. The Spaniard’s weak shot was gorgeously flicked into the net by Bheke at the far post.

The defender almost doubled his side’s lead at the stroke of half-time after Mourtada Fall’s poor first touch gifted him the ball inside the box. Bheke’s effort, however, skimmed off the crossbar.

The hosts were reduced to 10 men two minutes into the second-half when Ali picked up a second yellow card. The full-back pushed the ball away with his hand to prevent Xisco from getting to it on the right flank and received a second yellow card.

Bengaluru were also dealt a blow at the hour mark when Delgado was shown a straight red card for a high-footed tackle on Hugo Boumous.

The game stretched in midfield as Goa sought an equaliser.

Chhetri found Nishu Kumar in space down the left flank and the full-back used his first touch to skip past Seriton Fernandes into the box and forced a good low save from Nawaz.

Goa got their equaliser in the 72nd minute when Ferran Corominas fought his way into the box through a crowd of defenders and found Brandon in the centre. The Indian midfielder slotted the ball into the net, helped by a deflection.

Bengaluru restored their lead five minutes later. Thongkhosiem Haokip played Udanta Singh into space on the right flank and the Indian winger delivered a terrific cross to the far post where Chhetri lost his marker and headed home to secure all three points for his side.

Boxing Worlds: Mary Kom storms into 48 kg final

Five-time world champion M.C. Mary Kom stormed into the final of the 48 kilogram light flyweight category after thrashing North Korean Kim Hyang Mi 5:0 by unanimous verdict in the AIBA Women’s World Championships at the packed K.D.Jadhav Indoor Stadium here on Thursday.

Mary had previously clinched the gold medal on five occasions — 2002, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2010 — besides bagging a silver on her debut in 2001.

Thursday’s semi-final bout got off with a rousing welcome for the seasoned Indian boxer, as Mary started with swift movements and successfully negated the height advantage of her rival.

While the North Korean came back aggressively in the second round, Mary was quick enough to reserve her punches before coming up with a right arm jab to tame her opponent.

In the third and final round, Kim tried using her height and long reach but Mary used all her experience to thwart any challenge.

The 35-year-old Manipuri pugilist, who is still tied with Katie Taylor of Ireland on five gold medals, has an opportunity to become the most successful woman boxer if she beats Ukraine’s Hanna Okhota in the final.

“I will try my best in the final. I fought with this girl in Poland and I have beaten her. I will try my best inside the ring,” Mary said after her semi-final bout.

The 49th edition of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI Gao 2018) kicked off on a celebratory note amongst an august gathering of celebrities, film fraternity & cine buffs. Expressing his pleasure about his country, Israel being the focus country this year, His Excellency Consul General of Israel to India Ya’akov Finkelstein said, “Through cinema we want to fortify the relations between India & Israel. I want to encourage the people of India to visit Israel and also make it a filming destination as I encourage the thought of seeing is believing. It is part of the growing partnership between Israel & India that embraces all levels of cooperation from the Government to the business sector to people to people relations to the cultural relations between the 2 countries.”
The 10 Israeli films offer a glimpse into the issues plaguing his country, history, landscapes, he said. The section opened with director Avi Nesher’s The Other Story. In Shalom Bollywood: The Untold Story of Indian Cinema, one of the other movies selected, viewers are introduced to the 2000 year-old Indian Jewish community & its place in shaping the Hindi film industry. The movie is directed by Danny Ben Moshe.
He also highlighted the co-production signed between the 2 countries that will enable cross cultural ties. He elucidated that Dharma Productions had already shot their movie Drive there & more films are in the pipeline.  
His Excellency Consul General of Israel to India Ya’akov Finkelstein also spoke of the direct flight from Goa to Tel-Aviv to be introduced.
Speaking to the media, lifetime award recipient at IFFI, Dan Wolman shared his journey with the gathering. Wolman earlier received the “Lifetime Achievement Award” at Jerusalem International Film Festival & won The “Ophir Life Time Achievement Award”. His noted films include Lemon Popsical, The Distance & Foreign Sister. There is a special presentation of 3 of his films at the festival namely Ben’s Biography, Floch & above Hide And Seek.
Dan Wolman described his work as an “advocate of the fringes”. His films have dealt with topics like old age homes, prostitutes, homosexuality & above all other offbeat topics. In his films he’s not trying to follow the trend, but find a way to do things that are courageous & different and still continue to work.
He’s already scripted a children’s film My Father’s Secret India that will be spread across Israel & India. He’s using the opportunity to look for investors looking to collaborate on the project, he said.
Also present was producer of the opening film The Other Story, David Silber. The story that began 4 years ago & reflects on Israeli children turning to religious life & the parent’s dilemma how to deal with it. “The film talks about secular parents who feel that they are losing their daughter to religious world & are trying to fight it and eventually learning how to accept the daughter,” he said.
In another press conference with the Jury members of the Indian Panorama feature & non-feature films, Rahul Rawail, Chairman of the Indian Panorama, Feature section praised the great strides taken by regional cinema. He said that in the future Indian cinema will be referred to as a collated whole & not regional or Hindi cinema.
Other jury members present were (Indian Panorama – Feature Section) Major Ravi & K. G. Suresh, Director General, Indian Institute of Mass Communication, New Delhi.
Highlighting the shift in the non-feature category, veteran director Vinod Ganatra said that the short films will ‘definitely take over.’ He noted that 60% of the entries were short films.
The jury shared that the task of selection was a tough one. But through endless discussions, debates & analysis they arrived at the best set that would represent the country on an international platform.
The movies experimented with varied topics & Major Ravi noted that they had 18 transgender films. This meant that audiences are maturing & accepting new ideas. He elucidated with examples of Bengali film Nagarkirtan. Directed by Kaushik Ganguly, it explores the love story between a flute player Madhu & Parimal, a rural boy who realizes he’s a man trapped in a woman’s body.
Apart from content, Rawail Rawail also highlighted that there are no outlets for audiences to watch regional cinema. “The biggest mafia which is ruining this industry is the multiplex mafia. They decide what film will run, what will not run, for how many weeks & it’s all based around how much popcorn & samosas they can sell. They are not interested in the film,” Rahul Rawail said.
Infrastructure needs to be developed to screen for regional films, he added. “Costs are exorbitant for movies today. People pay for it and then they do not enjoy these kinds of films. The more people watch these films they will want to see them more & more.”
The 3rd press conference introduced the cast & the crew of the opening Indian Panorama films in the feature & non-feature categories. Olu, directed by veteran filmmaker Shaji N Karun takes you deep down under the Kerala backwaters where Olu (she), a gypsy girl mysteriously survives beneath the waters where she has been sunk by her rapists. She comes to the surface only on full moon nights and it is on one such night she meets a painter Vasu.
The director Shaji N Karun credited all those involved in the success of the film. He said that the fantasy film has strong influences of Buddhism in terms of use of motifs like the lotus & the moon.
In the non-feature category Kharvas, directed by Aditya Suhas Jambhale moves the viewer with it is stirring tale of Aasawari, an artist who loses her child as a still born. He mentioned that the goal was to focus on ‘problems that we many times skip.’ “If it is about a woman we pretend that we don’t know about it or there is problem at all. It is a story of a mother who is trying to find peace in a turmoil situation where she has to fight within herself as a mother & the perceptions of the society.”
The film was shot in Goa for 5 days and the incredible aspect as a new filmmaker was trying to configure the climax. Shooting in a cow shed over long hours was a challenge. His theatre background came to his rescue in capturing his final shot.
The festival is all set to continue spreading the joy of cinema over the coming days.
 

TN seeks Rs 15,000 crore for cyclone relief

 Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K. Palaniswami on Thursday said the state government has urged the Central government for release of Rs 15,000 crore towards cyclone damge relief.

The severe cyclone Gaja crossed Tamil Nadu coast on November 16 leaving 63 people and thousands of livestock dead and damaging properties, standing crops, coconut groves, banana plantations and power distribution infrastructure in several districts.

Speaking to reporters here, Palaniswami said a memorandum detailing the devastation left by cyclone Gaja has been submitted to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

He said for temporary relief works, a sum of Rs 1,500 crore has been requested to be released immediately.

Palaniswami met Modi here on Thursday.

“The Prime Minister has assured to depute a central team to assess the loss,” Palaniswami added.

The Chief Minister said the compensation amount announced by the AIADMK government is far higher than what the then DMK government announced after cyclone Nisha in 2008.

Asked as to why he did not visit the cyclone-affected places by road, Palaniswami said four districts have been severely affected and countered as to how one can visit them by road.

He said he made an aerial survey flying low and has taken pictures of the damage which were handed over to PM Modi.

India to open ‘Passport Seva Kendras’ in each parliamentary constituencies

The Indian government plans to open a ‘Passport Seva Kendra’ in each of the 543 parliamentary constituencies across the country by March next year to ensure convenient passport services to its people, Minister of State for External Affairs V K Singh said here.

The government is trying to ensure that Indian citizens do not face any difficulty in obtaining their passports whether in India or abroad, he said as he launched the ‘Passport Seva’ programme at India’s Consulate here on Wednesday.

The ‘Passport Seva’ programme has brought in a huge transformation towards delivery of passport services in India, Singh said while handing over passports to a few Indian citizens who had used the new programme to renew their passports.

“This project will ensure better services for our citizens abroad. It is a service which is truly meant for citizens,” he said at the global launch of the programme here.

The new system will ensure an easy and convenient application submission process, usher-in standardisation, digital overhauling, end-to-end status tracking and enhance security, the minister said.

The government plans to have a ‘Passport Seva Kendra’ in each of the 543 parliamentary constituencies across the country by March, 2019 to ensure convenient passport services to its citizens, he said.

“We plan to have a Passport Kendra in each head post office (in India) so that any citizen doesn’t have to travel beyond 50-60 km for his or her passport services,” Singh said.

The government aims that by March next year, each of the 543 Parliamentary constituencies in the country should have one ‘Passport Seva Kendra’ for the benefit of the citizens, he said.

The year 2017 registered a 19 per cent growth in passport related services. The monthly submission of applications has crossed one million mark for the first time and more than six crore passports have been issued through the ‘Pasport Seva’ system, the minister said.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has taken several measures to improve the passport service delivery experience, including by simplifying several passport rules and doing away with cumbersome requirements that delayed the process and led to unnecessary hurdles, he said.

The MEA with the Department of Posts took the decision to start ‘Passport Seva Kendars’ in head post offices.

As a result, 236 ‘Post Office Passport Seva Kendras’ (POPSKs) have been operationalised to date and many more are in the pipeline. This, when added to 36 passport offices and 93 erstwhile ‘Passport Seva Kendras’, makes a total of 365 passport offices for public.

The MEA has also initiated the integration of ‘Passport Seva Programme’ at all Indian Embassies and Consulates across the globe.

The MEA has successfully initiated a pilot project at the High Commission of India in London followed by the Consulate General of India in Birmingham and Edinburgh.

After launching the global ‘Passport Seva’ programme at the Consulate General of India in New York for the Indian diaspora, the MEA will launch the programme at the Indian Embassy in Washington followed by the Consulate in Atlanta. It aims to operationalise all Embassy/Consulates in the US during the course of next 15 days.

The Indian government plans to roll out the global ‘Passport Seva’ programme at all Embassies/Consulates within the next three to four months, a move that will ensure that “our ‘Passport Seva’ globally is inter-linked and centrally controlled,” Singh added.

CM meet Sugar factory owners

Sugar factory owners cum political leaders arrived at Chief Minister Kumaraswamy’s home office Krishna on Thursday to attend a meeting with regard to the payment of dues to sugarcane growers.

Reportedly, Congress leaders S R Patil, Anand Nyamagouda, Shrimant Patil, Ramesh Jarkiholi, Satish Jarkiholi, Balachandra Jarkiholi and BJP’s Murugesh Nirani all sugarcane factory owners arrived to attend the meeting

It is gathered that ahead of this meeting sugarcane factory owners had held a private meeting at a city hotel to discuss the stand they need to take in CM’s meeting.

Kumaraswamy on Tuesday, November 20 in his 6-hour-long meeting with sugarcane growers promised  that he will be holding a meeting with the sugarcane factory owners and had also assured that he would see to it that the factory owners to settle their dues

Trouble brews in Kerala unit of JD(S), party president intervenes

Trouble has been brewing in the Kerala unit of the Janata Dal (S) – the third largest ally of the CPM-led government, prompting the party president to intervene.

JD (S) National President and former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda has called his three legislators to Bengaluru on Thursday to meet him at 8 p.m.

The three include Mathew T. Thomas, State Minister for Water Resources, former State Minister C.K. Nanu and K. Krishnankutty.

While Thomas continues to remain in the state, both Nanu and Krishnankutty have already left to meet the party chief.

The present impasse began when the Pinarayi Vijayan government completed its two-and-a-half years in office.

According to a section of the JD (S) owing allegiance to Krishnankutty, there was an agreement that Thomas would relinquish the ministership in Krishnankutty’s favour once the government completed the half-way mark of its 5-year term.

However, this claim has been refuted by the Thomas camp.

While Nanu remained aloof for a while, Krishnankutty has now managed to swing him to his side, and both are travelling together to meet their national president.

Indo-Canadian doctor forges degree, fined in Dubai

 An Indo-Canadian female dermatologist, found guilty of forging and using a fake diploma as well as other documents to practice medicine in Dubai, has lost her appeal against a six-month jail term.

Public prosecution records showed that the 38-year-old woman managed to have the licence to work as a dermatologist issued for her after filling in her application form with false information, the Khaleej Times reported on Wednesday night.

She used a forged general medicine degree and diploma in specialisation when applying for the permit.

The defendant also threatened a company, specialising in verifying data and information, to hasten the process of verifying her documents and told the firm that in case the result was not positive it would be closed, according to the records.

A trial court had earlier convicted her on charges of practicing medicine with a licence she had wrongfully obtained and committing forgery.

It sentenced her to a six-month jail term, to be followed by deportation.

She was also ordered to pay a 200,000 dirham fine.
