PKL 6: Haryana Steelers play a draw vs Tamil Thalaivas

November 15, 2018 by Nasheman

Mumbai Vikas Kandola’s brilliant effort wasn’t enough to bring a win for Haryana Steelers as they had to settle for a 32-32 draw against Tamil Thalaivas in an inter-zonal clash of the ongoing Pro Kabaddi League (PKL) at the NSCI stadium here on Wednesday.

Vikas collected 14 raid points, while his teammate Naveen managed to pick four. For Tamil Thalaivas, Sukesh Hegde, skipper Ajay Thakur and all-rounder Manjeet Chillar bagged seven, six and four points respectively.

Tamil Thalaivas started on a brilliant note as their consecutive successful raids and tackles helped them take a 6-2 lead in the first five minutes.

They continued to collect points on most of the occasions as the Ajay Thakur-led side moved to 10 points, while their opponents were still at four.

Sukesh kept on breaking Haryana’s defence as his side reached 13 points, eight above Haryana.

However, the game witnessed a change in the final 10 minutes as Haryana shifted gears and Vikas along with Naveen kept on earning raid points, while their opponents suddenly started to falter.

Haryana slowly cut the deficit to just two points as the scoreline read 11-13 and later inflicted an All-Out to take a one-point lead with the score being 14-13 with four minutes left.

Vikas continued to raid successfully and his side’s defenders also rose to the occasion to collect tackle points as Haryana took a 19-15 lead at half-time.

The second-half saw both the teams creeping ahead with Haryana still managing a 25-23 lead by the 32nd minute.

With the score reading 26-24 in favour of Haryana in the final five minutes, Ajay and Jasveer’s successful raid tied the issue at 27-27 to make the matter interesting.

Tamil Thalaivas then inflicted an All-Out to make a comeback in the contest as they took a 31-29 lead.

Vikas’ failed attempt saw the Tamil Thalaivas moving to 32 points however, his back-to-back successful attempts tied the issue again at 32-32 before the final whistle and the contest ended in a draw.

November 15, 2018 by Nasheman

New Delhi Dhruv Shorey yet again top-scored with an unbeaten 106 to help hosts Delhi post a massive 376-run target for Himachal Pradesh, who ended the penultimate day at 44/1 in a Ranji Trophy Group B match at the Feroz Shah Kotla here on Wednesday.

After taking a comfortable 94-run first innings lead, Delhi rode on Shorey’s unbeaten century, coupled with a few useful knocks from veteran Gautam Gambhir, captain Nitish Rana and the middle order to declare on 281/4 before India veteran Ishant Sharma struck early to remove Himachal captain Prashant Chopra as the tourists found themselves at 44/1 at stumps.

In another Group B tie, Kerala folded for 348 after being 241/1 against Andhra in Thiruvananthapuram. However, off-spinner Jalaj Saxena’s magical 7/44 helped the hosts inch closer to victory as Andhra found themselves tottering at 102/8 in their second innings, with a slender lead of 28 and just two wickets in hand.

In the other Group B matches, Abhinav Mukund stroked an unbeaten 101 to help Tamil Nadu reach 163/2 against Hyderabad, who posted 565/8 in their first innings, while Madhya Pradesh rode skipper Naman Ojha’s 74 to reach 254/5 but still trail by another 256 runs against Bengal’s mammoth 510/9.

In Group A, Vishnu Solanki’s ton helped Baroda dominate Maharashtra as his unbeaten 156 helped the side end the day on 367/3 with a massive lead of 421. Kedar Devdhar (91) and Deepak Hooda (96) missed their respective hundreds but their scores were enough to take the game away from Maharashtra.

In Nagpur, Vidarbha took a slim 1-run lead after reaching 72/2 against Karnataka while Chhattisgarh trailed Gujarat’s 538/7 by 172 runs at Valsad.

In the other Group A tie, India all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja coupled his unbeaten 178 with three wickets in the second innings as hosts Saurashtra reduced the Railways to 278/8. The visitors now have a 130-run lead in their second essay.

In Group C, Assam found themselves in the driver’s seat after reducing hosts Tripura for 68/4 in their chase of 428 while Rajasthan ended the third day at 95 for no loss, needing 277 more on the final day against the Services in Jaipur.

In the other two Group C matches, Jammu and Kashmir ended the day at 246/7 to trail hosts Goa’s first innings score of 468/9 by 222 runs at Porvorim while Odisha lost seven wickets for 180 runs in their second innings to trail by Uttar Pradesh’s first innings total of 437 by 1 run.

Coming to the Plate Group, Uttarakhand cantered to an 8-wicket win over Manipur as they chased down 99 with ease in Dehradun. They are now second in the plate group with 13 points from two games after their bonus point win over Bihar in the first round.

Sikkim rode on a splendid double ton by Milind Kumar as they defeated Nagaland by 9 wickets to pick up their second win and climb to the top of the table.

In Assam’s Jorhat, Akhil Rajput starred for Mizoram with a handsome 124 to help his team reach 244/2 and now require only 166 on the final day to beat Arunachal Pradesh.

In Puducherry, Yogesh Nagar’s 141 helped Meghalaya post 326 but the Northeastern side however, failed to take the first innings lead after Puducherry scored 389. The hosts, in their second innings scored 95/4 to take a 158-run lead going to the final day.

Tough to become a standout Kabaddi player in India: Fazel (IANS Interview)

November 14, 2018 by Nasheman

In no time he has become one of the latest posterboys in Indias cash-rich Pro Kabaddi League (PKL) but U Mumba skipper Fazel Atrachali, the Iranian defender, feels it is a tough task to become a standout player in a country like India, the powerhouse of this game for several years.

Fazel, who has led his Mumbai-based team to become one of the strongest contenders of this year’s title, shared his experiences with an exclusive chat with IANS.

“It is always difficult to become a star in a country like India as it produces a number of great and skilfull players. Here, one must perform very well to make your team believe in you,” opined the Iranian.

“India has a bunch of talented players and so, it is always a challenge to perform here,” added Fazel, whose side is currently leading the charts in zone A of the league.

Fazel had become the costliest purchase in this year’s PKL auction as U Mumba pocketed him for a whopping Rs 1 crore but the Iranian believes his game is more important than money.

“I don’t think about money at all. It is for just three months. I want to play like this for next five-six years more so I focus on future and try to get better every day,” Fazel explained.

The Iranian may be leading a completely new team in the ongoing season but feels it is the challenge that he enjoys the most.

“I like to play with a new team, with young players,” he said besides explaining the reason behind it.

“They (young players) never play for themselves, these players play for the team which I like the most and I like such a challenge to lead them.”

Sharing his PKL experience so far, Fazal expressed: “What I have learnt is that one must play with both his mind and body. Both must work together for you.”

“Also, if I think just about myself that I am a great player, it will not work at all. All players should come as a unit and stick to the team’s strategy and plan. Only then your team could win,” he pointed out.

Fazel, however does not subscribe to the general view that being a defender and skipper together is an added advantage in kabaddi, since a defender is on the mat till the last moment.

“No, it is not like that. Kabaddi is all about both your raiders and defenders,” the 26-year-old said.

“It is not just your raiders are performing or just your defenders, both have to work together only then it is an advantage. It is never about the one side, the whole team needs to click together on every occasion,” Fazel concluded.

India’s heaviest rocket lifts off with communication satellite GSAT-29

November 14, 2018 by Nasheman

India’s heaviest rocket – Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle-Mark III (GSLV-Mk III)– carrying 3,423 kg communication satellite GSAT-29 blasted off from the Sriharikota spaceport on Wednesday evening.

Precisely at 5.08 p.m. the GSLV-Mk III rocket on its second developmental flight began its ascent with a strong deep growl that reverberated like a thunder roll breaking free from the second launch pad here at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC).

The 43.4-metre rocket weighing about 640 tonne rushed to the blue skies with thick orange flame at its rear.

The GSLV-Mk III with a capacity to carry four-tonne satellite, is a three-stage/engine rocket with two strap-on motors powered by solid fuel. The second stage is a core liquid fuel booster and the third is the cryogenic engine.

The Indian space agency had flown a similar rocket on June 5, 2017, with GSAT-19 satellite. Prior to that ISRO had flown another rocket with 3.7-tonne dummy payload in 2014 to test its in-flight structural stability and aerodynamics.

On Wednesday, just over 16 minutes into its flight the rocket will sling the GSAT-29 at its intended orbit at an altitude of around 207 km.

According to Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), GSAT-29 with a life span of 10 years is a multi-beam satellite that carries Ka/Ku-band high throughput communication transponders intended to meet the communication requirements of users including those in remote areas.

In addition, several new technologies such as Q/V-band payload, data transmission through optical communication link will be demonstrated. This will help in realising future advanced satellites, ISRO said.

The satellite also carries a geo-high resolution camera.

India currently has two fully operational rockets — the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle and GSLV-Mk II — with a lift-off mass of 415 tonnes and a carrying capacity of 2.5 tonnes.

New life-size statue of Jayalalithaa replaced

November 14, 2018 by Nasheman

The ruling AIADMK unveiled a new statue of former chief minister J Jayalalithaa at its headquarters in Chennai on Wednesday, months after the earlier one was criticised for not resembling the former party supremo.

According to a party release, AIADMK coordinator O Panneerselvam and Joint Coordinator K Palaniswami paid floral tributes to the ‘refurbished’ statue of Jayalalithaa, in the presence of senior leaders, including MPs and state ministers.

Palaniswami is the chief minister of Tamil Nadu and Panneerselvam is his deputy.

The two leaders also felicitated sculptor Rajkumar Udayar who designed the statue, it said.

A life-size statue of the leader was unveiled by the two leaders on February 24, coinciding with Jayalalithaa’s 70th birth anniversary. However, it drew criticism from various quarters that it bore little resemblance to Jayalalithaa following which the party decided to go in for a new one.

Accordingly, the new statue was unveiled on Wednesday, and is placed near that of party founder and former chief minister MG Ramachandran at the entrance of the AIADMK headquarters.

The new life-size statue is made of bronze and weighs around 800 kg, a little more than the earlier one, party sources said.

Took loan from Ambidant for personal reasons: Janardhana Reddy

November 14, 2018 by Nasheman

Mining baron Gali Janardhana Reddy’s right-hand man Mehfuz Ali Khan submitted an affidavit in court on Tuesday, which may come as a relief to Janardhana. Janardhana Reddy has been accused of accepting Rs 20 crore – Rs 2 crore in cash and Rs 18 crore worth gold bullion weighing 57 kg from the owner of Ambidant Marketing Pvt Ltd for allegedly bailing the owner Syed Ahmed Fareed out of a probe by the Enforcement Directorate.

Bengaluru’s Central Crime Branch sleuths have been trying to track down the gold bullion. They also filed an objection to Mehfuz’s anticipatory bail plea on Tuesday. In an affidavit submitted through his attorney, Mehfuz claims that he bought the 57 kg gold in order to offer it to various places of worship.

Mehfuz, who appeared before the 1st Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate in Bengaluru on Tuesday told the court that Syed Ahmed Fareed, the founder and managing director of Ambidant, helped him receive a loan to purchase the gold. Mehfuz also said that he was prepared to return the Rs 18 crore to Ahmed Fareed if the court orders him to do so.

“My family and I are great believers of the Almighty and we believe that the only way to be blessed by God is through charity. We had pledged to offer gold to the Almighty if we were redeemed of adversities. We had been facing troubles since 2011 and were able to overcome it, To honour our commitment to God, we began gathering the gold,” Mehfuz Ali Khan’s affidavit states.

In January this year, Mehfuz alleged that he met Ahmed Fareed and confided in him his need to obtain gold in order to donate it to various places of worship. Mehfuz stated that Fareed appreciated his initiative and promised to help him.

“He helped me obtain a loan of Rs 18 crore, which he gave through his company Ambidant in March this year. It is only now, after the reports in the media that I have learnt that there are cases against Ambidant for cheating its depositors. I am not involved in the affairs of the company and the loan was obtained for personal reasons. I am now prepared to return the entire amount now,” the affidavit adds.

Khan’s statement came soon after Justice Jagadeesh, who was hearing Janardhana Reddy’s bail application, reprimanded CCB officials.

Mehfuz’s affidavit may offer Janardhana some respite, since CCB sleuths suspect that he laundered the Rs 18 crore through gold bullion obtained by Mehfuz. Mehfuz has been Reddy’s trusted lieutenant since 2007, when he started working for Brahmani Steel, Janardhan Reddy’s company. Mehfuz was also one of the accused in the illegal mining scam allegedly by the Obulapuram Mining Company in Ballari, owned by Janardhana Reddy and his brothers. Mehfuz was also arrested along with Janardhana Reddy in 2012.

CCB sources say that the paper trail in the gold transactions ends with Mehfuz, and that they suspect the gold was procured by Mehfuz for Janardhana Reddy.

“How will Mehfuz and Janardhana Reddy explain the meeting they held with Ambidant owner at Taj West End or in the hotel in HSR Layout? Mehfuz does not have any proof that he gave the money to said places of worship,” the CCB source added.

CCB sleuths have decided to invoke the Karnataka Protection of Interest of Depositors (KPID) in Financial Establishments Act against all six accused in the case. “We are collecting more evidence regarding the financial transaction. We have invoked KPID Act to ensure that the money which Ali returns will be returned to the investors under legal supervision,” said Alok Kumar, Additional Commissioner (crime), who is heading the investigation.

CCB sources say that Janardhana Reddy was aware of Ambidant’s activities and the allegations of financial fraud against it when the alleged transfer of Rs 20 crore was made through Mehfuz. “There is an RTGS transaction made to Ramesh, a Ballari-based jeweller who converted the money to gold which was then sent to reach Reddy’s beneficiaries in Ballari,” the source said.

#Me Too : Actor Sanjjanaa Galrani apologised to director Ravi srivatsa

November 14, 2018 by Nasheman

Kannada and Tamil actor Sanjjanaa Galrani has apologised to director Ravi Srivatsa, three weeks after she raised allegations of harassment by him during the shooting of the film Ganda Hendathi.

The actor had accused the director of coercing her into enacting intimate scenes she was uncomfortable in the film which released in 2006. In a Facebook Live posted on October 17, she detailed her ordeal in completing the shooting of her debut film.

However, despite of offering an apology, Sanjjana continues to stand by the allegations she raised in October. But, she says that she wants to move on from the issue and issued the apology following advice from actor Ambareesh. “All that I have spoken in the Me Too allegation is true but to get rid of the headache and the ruckus this has created, I have apologised,” Sanjjanaa told media.

The allegations had led to a controversy with Ravi Srivatsa complaining to the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) and the Kannada Film Directors Association that Sanjjana had tarnished his image with false allegations. He had also questioned the reason for her silence for twelve years and demanded an apology from Sanjjana for the allegations.

Initially, Sanjjana had lashed out at the director for demanding an apology but it appears that she has been coerced into making one after the issue snowballed into a controversy. Veteran actor Ambareesh stepped in as “peacekeeper” and urged Sanjjanaa to offer an apology.

Sanjjana apologised to Ravi in Ambareesh’s residence in the presence of director Roopa Iyer, producer Rockline Venkatesh, association president Nagendra Prasad among others.  “Ambareesh sir insisted to close this matter diplomatically, so I decided to apologise to maintain decorum in the industry,” she added.

Sanjjanna  has acted in more than 40 films across three languages — Kannada, Tamil and Telugu.
