Candidates must ‘publicise’ details of their criminal records, says EC

Following Supreme Court guidelines, Telangana’s Chief Electoral Officer, Dr Rajat Kumar, has issued instructions to all candidates contesting the elections with criminal records that they must provide details of the cases pending against them and other such antecedents, in the specified format while filing their nominations.

The CEO also said that these candidates are mandated to inform their respective parties about these criminal cases and antecedents besides publishing these details in widely circulated newspapers in the areas of their respective constituencies.

According to SC guidelines, the CEO said that the details had to be published thrice on three different dates besides similar details being broadcast on electronic media.

“This should be done during the period from the day following the last date for withdrawal of candidature and up to two days before the date of polling,” the Election Commission said in a press note.

“The concerned political party shall be obligated to put up on its website, the aforesaid information pertaining to candidates having criminal antecedents,” the EC added.

Last week, the Election Commission allotted time slots on All India Radio (AIR) and Doordarshan to the 11 registered political parties in the state that are contesting the elections.

“Out of them, seven are national parties; Congress, BJP, NCP, All-India Trinamool Congress, BSP, CPI and CPM. The remaining are all state recognised parties; AIMIM, TRS, TDP and YSRCP. The period of broadcasts/telecasts will be between the last day of filing nominations and two days before the polling. The Prasar Bharati Corporation (PBC) will decide the actual date and time for the broadcasts and telecasts, subject to the technical constraints governing actual time of transmission available,” the EC said in a press release.

Each of the national parties and state recognised parties is allotted a base time of 45 minutes and additional time is allowed on the basis of poll performance in the constituencies that fell under Telangana in the last Assembly elections in 2014.

Telangana will witness single-phase polling on December 7 to elect a 119-member Assembly after Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao and his cabinet decided to dissolve the Legislative Assembly on September 6. Chief Election Commissioner OP Rawat said that the Model Code of Conduct was in force in the state and the counting of votes will be held on December 11.

550 women register online for Sabarimala prayers

 A total of 550 women from the hitherto banned age group of 10 to 50 years have registered online for prayers at the Sabarimala temple during the upcoming festival season beginning on November 16.

According to the Travancore Devasom Board, till Friday close to 3.50 lakh pilgrims have booked for ‘darshan’ through the Kerala Police online facility. It includes 550 women between 10 and 50 years, the temple custodians said.

To regulate and streamline the devotees, the online registration designed and developed by the police was opened to weed out trouble makers who have created disturbances in the last two months in and around the temple.

Both temple authorities and protesters stopped 15 women from the 10-50 age group from praying at the Lord Ayyappa shrine in October and November despite a September 28 Supreme Court ruling that allowed all women to enter the hilltop shrine.

Between October 17 and 22 and again in November when the temple opened for a day, women devotees faced stiff resistance at Sabarimala.

Ahead of the next pilgrimage, the Supreme Court on November 13 will hear a batch of petitions against its September verdict.

The Left government in Kerala, which has said it will implement the apex court ruling, opened the “Sabarimala Virtual Q-System” that was introduced in the 2011-12 season and had functioned till 2015.

The online booking, on the lines of the one at the Tirupati temple, is expected to enable the pilgrims to book their ‘darshan’ in the upcoming festival season.

The Q-booking is linked to travel between Nilackal to Pamba from where the pilgrims have to walk up to the temple located on a hill.

As per the online booking, all pilgrims can take their vehicles till Nilackal. Then onward they can only board the Kerala State Road Transport Corp (KSRTC) buses.

Dabang Delhi beat Haryana Steelers in PKL tie

Dabang Delhi finally reversed the three match losing streak in the Pro Kabaddi League with a 39-33 win over Haryana Steelers here on Thursday.

This was Vikas Kandola’s first match as captain since Haryana’s Monu Goyat was on the bench. Monu Goyat came off the bench to try and inspire his team as he got 11 raid points in 18 raids but couldn’t do so.

Ravinder Pahal justified his nickname of “The Hawk” as he got six tackle points which included a strong Super Tackle in the end to seal the match.

Meraj Sheyk’s Super Raid helped him get a few points off Haryana’s grabs. Naveen Kumar stood as consistent as he got nine raid points for Delhi in 15 raids.

Dabang Delhi K.C. are going through a slump as they have lost their last three matches while Haryana were starting the match with Monu Goyat on the bench and an extra defender in the starting line up.

Chandran Ranjit started the match with a bonus point for Dabang Delhi K.C. It was a slow start for both teams as they went for a Do-Or-Die raid approach, but it completely changed with Haryana Steelers’ Do-Or-Die raid.

The 3rd minute saw Ravinder Pahal being assisted by Vishal Mane after he got a double ankle hold to pull Vikas Kandola from the midline and inject adrenaline into the match by making it 2-2.

Delhi started to dominate the extra raider’s advantage after they got Naveen and Vikas in a raid and tackle in subsequent raids.

Monu Goyat was brought into the match in the 10th minute to become the raider for Haryana but he couldn’t stop Haryana from conceding an All Out in the 12th minute to give Delhi a 5 point lead with 7-12 on the scoreboard.

His presence worked a little late as Haryana slowly but surely reduced the lead. Meraj Sheyk on the other hand leaped over Sachin Shingade to prove to everyone who brought this technique
to the league.

Sunil got a strong chain hold on Naveen Kumar with Monu to stop his leaping effort and make it 11-13.

They then inflicted an All Out on Delhi in the 18th minute to flip the table and take the lead 16-15. The half ended with Haryana Steelers taking a 4 point lead on Delhi with 19-15.

Dabang Delhi made a Dabang impact on the second half by picking up 10 points in the first 5 minutes of the half.

Meraj Sheyk got a Super Raid on Haryana in the 24th minute by getting Kuldeep Singh, Sunil and Naveen, keeping only Sachin Shingade on the mat for Haryana and making it 19-21 in favour of Delhi.

The next raid saw Delhi inflict the All Out and make it 20-24 in the 25 th minute.

Vishal Mane was the stronghold for Delhi as he dashed on the raiders of Haryana and pushed them out of the mat like he did in the 31st minute on an unsuspecting Naveen to make it 23-30.

Haryana started to creep towards Delhi’s score as Monu Goyat got Naveen Kumar while also noticing Ravinder Pahal enter the lobby without a touch already being made.

This reduced the gap to 5 points in the 35th minute to make it 28-33.

Joginder Narwal getting a strong dash on Vikas Kandola’s 38th minute Do-Or-Die raid helped them get back the momentum towards them.

Ravinder Pahal sealed the match with a strong Super Tackle on Monu Goyat to make it Delhi as Dabang Delhi K.C. defeated Haryana Steelers 33-39.

Shuttlers Sindhu, Srikanth in China Open quarters

Star Indian shuttlers P.V Sindhu and Kidambi Srikanth entered the quarter-finals, defeating their opponents in the China Open tournament here on Thursday.

It was a cake walk for World No. 2 Sindhu as she won her women’s singles tie against Thailand’s Busanan Ongbamrungphan 21-12, 21-15 in straight games.

Srikanth beat Indonesia’s Tommy Sugiarto 10-21, 21-9, 21-9 in a match which lasted 45 minutes.

Sindhu had no problems in outplaying her opponent. Her swift court movements and smashes saw her overpowering Ongbamrungphan in just 37 minutes of play while Srikanth had to struggle to register a come-from-behind victory.

Third seed Sindhu will face eighth seed He Bingjiao of China while fifth seed Srikanth will face fourth seed Chou Tien Chen of Chinese Taipei in the next round.

In the men’s doubles category, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty defeated Wahyu Nayaka Arya Pangkaryanira and Ade Yusuf Santoso of Indonesia 16-21, 21-14, 21-15 in an hour-long match.

After losing the first game, the Indian pair bounced back in style and wrapped up the issue to advance.

The Indian pair will now face Mohammad Ahsan and Hendra Setaiwan of Indonesia in the next round.

Woman dies after being gang-raped, stick inserted in private parts

A woman died after she was allegedly raped by three men, including her former husband, and a stick was inserted in her private parts in Jamtara district of Jharkhand, police said on Thursday.

Senior Police officer B N Singh said the woman’s ex-husband has been arrested a search is on to arrest the two others.

According to police, the woman had gone to watch a play at a theatre on Kali Puja on Wednesday night. Her former husband and two of his associates forcibly took her to a field in the village. After raping her, they inserted a stick in her private parts, police said.

On hearing the woman’s cries for help the next morning, villagers took her to a hospital in Narayanpur town from where she was referred to Jamtara Sadar Hospital, where doctors declared her brought dead.

Locals told police that she had accused her former husband and the other two men of raping her when they had found her in the field.

Anand to open account against Wesley So in Chess India

Five-time former world champion Viswanathan Anand will begin his campaign against Filipino-American Wesley So in the ‘Tata Steel Chess India 2018’ starting here at the Indian Council for Cultural Relations on Friday.

“It’s a very nice feeling to be back in Kolkata. I’ve got a lot of memories here. I’m really excited,” Anand said on the sidelines of the draw.

The 48-year-old last played here at the 3rd Goodricke Open in 1992.

Anand last played in India at his hometown Mayiladuthurai in 2013 when he lost the World Championship title to Magnus Carlsen.

India’s No.2 and former world junior champion Pentala Harikrishna will open his account against local challenger Surya Sekhar Ganguly.

Ganguly said he is looking forward to facing Anand for the first time in his life.

“I remember making the demo board during Anand’s match here in 1992. It’s strange but for the first time I’ll take him on a real board. I’m absolutely honoured,” an excited Ganguly said.

The USD 40,000 prize money tournament will feature three players in the top 10 ranking including Azerbaijan GM and world number three Shakhriyar Mamedyarov who will start off against India no 3 Vidit Gujrathi in the second board.

Mamedyarov, who has an Elo rating of 2817, said he does not give much importance to his rating.

“I’m not under any pressure. I will forget my rating and play my own game. I think it’s an open field with seven eight players who can go all the way,” he said.

Current World Cup winner Levon Aronian is slated to arrive on Friday as he missed the flight. He is drawn against Hikaru Nakamura who will play with white in the third board.

Armenian GM and world number six Levon Aronian; USA’s GM Wesley So who is world number 9; Japanese-American GM and four-time United States champion Hikaru Nakamura who is world number 14 and Russian GM Sergey Karjakin (world number 15) also feature in the draw.

The tournament features six Indian and five overseas Grandmasters including two wild card entries to Nihal Sarin and Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu who will compete in the rapid and blitz formats respectively.

The first three days of action will be of rapid chess in all nine rounds in round robin format followed by a rest day on Monday.

The final leg will be of double round robin blitz concluding on November 14.

Kohli reacts after social media backlash

Having faced the wrath of social media users for a couple of days after publicly lashing out at a fan, India skipper Virat Kohli tried to tone down the issue somewhat on Thursday, saying he is “all for freedom of choice”.

“I guess trolling isn’t for me guys, I’ll stick to getting trolled! I spoke about how “these Indians” was mentioned in the comment and that’s all. I’m all for freedom of choice. Keep it light guys and enjoy the festive season. Love and peace to all,” Kohli said in a message on his official Twitter handle.

Earlier, the India skipper was trolled on social media after he asked a fan to leave the country if he did not like to watch Indian cricketers in action.

Kohli, who launched the ‘Virat Kohli Official App’ on his 30th birthday on Monday, faced the backlash after his reaction to a fan, who confessed his preference for English and Australian cricketers over Kohli’s blue brigade.

“He (Virat) is an overrated batsman. Nothing seems special in his batting. I enjoy watching English and Australian batsmen more than these Indians,” the fan wrote.

Kohli admitted that he was not personally affected by the criticism but pointed out that if someone does not like Indian players while living in India then they should not be living in the country.

“I don’t think you should live in India. Go and live somewhere else. Why are you living in our country and loving other countries? I don’t mind you not liking me. I don’t think you should live in our country and like other things. Get your priorities right,” Kohli replied.

The right-hander, who struck three consecutive centuries in the just-concluded five-match ODI rubber against the West Indies, has surpassed batting legend Sachin Tendulkar to become the quickest to reach 10k One-day International (ODI) runs.

Key Indian equity indices open in green

The 30-scrip S&P BSE Sensex on Friday opened in green over mixed global cues and a recovering rupee.

However, the Sensex lost over 170 points minutes into the trading.

Healthy buying was witnessed in healthcare and capital goods counters whereas index-pivotals– finance and banking — stocks were in red.

The Sensex of the BSE opened at 35,258.13 from its previous close at 35,237.68.

At 9.20 a.m., the Sensex traded at 35,064.84 lower by 172.84 points or 0.49 per cent.

The Nifty50 of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) opened at 10,614.70 after closing at 10,598.40.

The Nifty traded at 10,558.85 during the morning trade session, down 39.55 points and 0.37 per cent.

All 4 Indian-American members of Congress re-elected

All the four Indian-American Democrat members of the House of Representatives were re-elected in Tuesday’s election and a member of the community won the Attorney General’s position in Wisconsin state.

Raja Krishnamoorthi, who represents a constituency near Chicago in Illinois, won about 66 percent of the votes to defeat his Indian-American challenger J.D. Diganvker of the Republican Party.

The other House candidates re-elected were Pramila Jeyapal from Washington State, and Ro Khanna and Ami Bera from California.

Together with the only Senator of Indian descent, Kamala Harris, they make up what they themselves jokingly call “The Samosa Caucus,” Harris won from California in 2016 did not face a re-election as she has a six-year term.

None of the other Indian Americans running for Congress made it.

In a sign of the Indian-American community’s growing political involvement, Democrat Josh Kaul was elected Attorney General of Wisconsin in a tight race with a margin of about 1 percent of the votes, although his victory is likely to be challenged by his Republican rival.

He will be the second Indian-American Attorney General. The first is Gurbir Grewal, a turban-wearing Sikh, in New Jersey where Attorneys General are not elected but appointed by the Governor.

Kaul is the fourth Indian-American to win a state-wide election, which sets the stage for him to run for other higher offices. The first was Piyush Bobby Jindal, elected Louisiana governor in 2007 who was followed by Nikki Haley, elected South Carolina governor in 2010; both are Republicans. The third is Harris.

Shiva Ayyadurai, who ran as an Independent against Massachusetts Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren, lost badly, getting only about 3.5 percent of the votes.

Warren has claimed Native American or American Indian ancestry and Ayyadurai ran a controversial campaign with the headline, “Only a real Indian can defeat a fake Indian’.

At least seven other Indians ran for Congress on Democratic Party tickets but lost according to a database of the Indian American Impact Fund and Desis for Progress, which had endorsed them.

Harry Arora, who ran for the House as a Republican from Connecticut, lost.

The database also showed that six Indian-American Democrats had been elected to State legislatures for the first time.

2 arrested for murder attempt on Meghalaya rights activist

Two people were arrested on Friday in connection with the murder attempt on a women’s rights activist and two other persons in Meghalaya’s East Jaintia Hills district, police said.

The suspects, Elphon Dkhar and Meklison Siangshai, were arrested in Kongong area in a pre-dawn raid.

“A suo moto case was taken up by police since the victims are not in position to file an FIR as they are in a serious condition. We are interrogating the two arrested persons and a manhunt is on to arrest the other attackers,” Sylvester Nongtnnger, the police chief of East Jaintia Hills, told IANS.

Meanwhile, officials at the North East Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) said that the activist, Agnes Kharshiing, was still in a “critical condition” while the other two persons — her aide Amita Sangma and their driver E. Kurbah — were stable.

“Kharshiing is on ventilator. The condition of the other two is stable,” NEIGRIHMS Spokesperson, K.K.Pandita said.

On Thursday, Kharshiing, who is also the President of Civil Society Women’s Organisation (CSWO), alongwith Sangma and Kurbah were brutally assaulted by a group of some 40 people after the activist lodged a complaint on the illegal mining and transportation of coal in the district.

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) had ordered an interim ban on “rat-hole” coal mining in Meghalaya from April 17, 2014, after the All Dimasa Students’ Union and the Dima Hasao District Committee filed an application before it alleging that the water of the Kopili river was turning acidic due to coal mining in the Jaintia Hills.

Meanwhile, several political and non-governmental organisation leaders have condemned the attack on Kharshiing and her aides.

“I condemn the attack on Kong Agnes Kharshiing and Amita Sangma, the other member of the CSWO, today by criminals in the strongest terms possible and pray for her complete recovery. I urge the authorities to waste no time and ensure the arrest of the criminals and their prosecution as per the law,” Leader of Opposition Mukul Sangma said.

Former Meghalaya Home Minister Robert Garnett Lyngdoh said the attack on Kharshiing shows the “seriousness of the illegal mining of coal in Jaintia Hills”.

Civil group Thma U Rangli Juki (TUR) said: “This cowardly attack on one of the leading anti corruption human rights activist of Meghalaya clearly points to the impunity with which mafias are operating in the state under political patronage.”

The attack on Kharshiing was the second such incident on a social activist in the district.

On March 19, RTI activist Poipynhun Majaw, who was the president of the Jaintia Youth Federation, was found murdered in Khliehriat, the district headquarters of East Jaintia Hills.
