Bill Cosby faces 5-10 years in jail for sexual assault

September 25, 2018 by Nasheman

Comedian Bill Cosby, who was earlier facing up to 30 years behind bars, will now face a maximum of 10 years after his three counts of his conviction were merged into one.

Prosecutors asked a US court on Monday to sentence Cosby to 5-10 years for sexually assaulting Andrea Constand, saying he had shown “no remorse” for his actions, media reported.

“This is about a person who put himself in a situation of being a mentor, but we know he had other intentions just from the beginning,” District Attorney Kevin Steele said on the first day of a hearing that would determine how severely the disgraced actor sould be punished.

“We know that from the statements he made. What he saw in Andrea the first time he laid eyes on her. What his plan was. To get to the point they were going to get to. And that didn’t involve consent.”

Cosby, the first high-profile American celebrity to be convicted in the #MeToo era, should be locked up for as long as a decade and be required to register as a sex offender for the remainder of his life, prosecutors said.

However, Cosby’s defence attorney, Joseph P. Green, asked for a sentence of house arrest, citing Cosby’s advanced age and blindness.

“Cosby is not dangerous,” he said. “Eighty-one-year-old blind men who are not self-sufficient are not a danger, unless perhaps to themselves.”

The sentence was expected to come on Tuesday after Judge Steven T. O’Neill decides whether Cosby should be required to register himself with state police and submit to sex-offender counselling and notification for life.

Cosby was convicted in April of three counts of aggravated indecent assault for drugging and assaulting Constand at his home in 2004.

Judge O’Neill announced that the charges had been merged into one because they all stem from the same event.

Monday’s hearing also featured victim impact statements from Constand, her parents and her sister.

A prosecution expert said Cosby should be labelled a “sexually violent predator” because he has a mental disorder that involves urges toward non-consenting women.

Cosby has declined to participate in any evaluation on his mental state to decide whether he was sexually violent predator.

Dr Rajkumar kidnap case: court acquits all accused

September 25, 2018 by Nasheman

A local court in Gobichettipalayam in Tamil Nadu on Tuesday acquitted all nine accused in the sensational abduction case of Kannada matinee idol Dr Rajkumar by forest brigand Veerappan in July 2000.

Additional district judge K Mani, while acquitting all the nine accused, tore into the prosecution for not presenting a watertight case.

The judge also criticised Dr Rajkumar’s family for not coming forward to file a complaint against the people who abducted the Kannada icon.

The judge also said the prosecution failed to provide even an iota of evidence to prove that the accused were connected to Veerappan and his aide Sethukuzhi Govinda.

Pakistani teen, boyfriend beheaded by father for ‘honour’

September 24, 2018 by Nasheman

Islamabad An 18-year-old girl was beheaded along with her 21-year-old boyfriend in Pakistan by her father and uncle in what the police are calling yet another incident of honour killing, the media reported on Monday.

The incident took place in a small village in Attock district when the man arrived at the girl’s house to meet her, police was quoted by Dawn News as saying. Soon after, the girl’s father and her uncle walked in and, after tying the victims with ropes, beheaded them with a sharp object.

The police have arrested both suspects and recovered the murder weapon as well, Sub-inspector of Saddar police station Asif Khan said.

Scores of people in Pakistan, an overwhelming majority of whom are women, are still being murdered by relatives for bringing “shame” on their family.

At least 280 such murders were recorded by the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan from October 2016 to June 2017 – a figure believed to be understated and incomplete.

Sensex ends 536 points lower, Nifty below 11,000-mark

September 24, 2018 by Nasheman

Mumbai Slump in the financial stocks along with a weak rupee and high crude oil prices dragged the S&P BSE Sensex down 536 points on Monday and the NSE Nifty50 lost nearly 170 points to close below 11,000-mark — slipping into the red for the fifth consecutive session.

On the other hand, the rupee weakened during the day to trade around 72.59 (4.15 p.m) per US dollar against the previous close of 72.20 per greenback.

With all the major sectors contributing to the sell-off, top sectoral losers were banking, auto and finance.

At 3.30 p.m, the wider NSE Nifty50 provisionally closed at 10,974.90 points, lower 168.20 points or 1.51 per cent from the previous close of 11,143.10 points.

The BSE Sensex, which had opened at 36,924.72 points, provisionally closed at 36,305.02 points, lower 536.58 points or 1.46 per cent from the Friday’s close of 36,841.60 points.

The Sensex touched an intra-day high of 36,945.50 points and a low of 36,216.95 points.

Livepool keep up the pace in EPL as Man City back in form

September 24, 2018 by Nasheman

London All good things must come to an end, but not for Liverpool it seems as they extended their 100 percent record to six games in the English Premier League with a 3-0 win at home over Southampton.

Questions had been raised beforehand about Southampton’s defence and they were answered after just 10 minutes when Liverpool took the lead thanks to an own goal and from then on it was downhill all the way for Jurgen Klopp’s men, who had done the job by halftime with further goals from Joel Matip and Mohamed Salah, reports Xinhua news agency.

Chelsea lost their 100 percent record, but remain unbeaten after a 0-0 draw away to West Ham United.

West Ham coach Manuel Pellegrino is nicknamed ‘the Engineer’ for the way he slowly builds his teams and his side’s display showed that at times it is important to show patience with coaches after a poor start to the season.

Chelsea’s Eden Hazard was less hazardous than usual as West Ham swamped Chelsea in the middle of the park and perhaps the visitors paid for their efforts in Thursday’s Europa League game in Greece.

Chelsea’s dropped points allowed Manchester City to move into second place with a clinical 5-0 win away to Cardiff.

It always looked as if it was going to be a bad time to face Pep Guardiola’s side after their Champions defeat in midweek and that’s how it turned out.

Kun Aguero, Bernardo Silva and Gundogan scored three goals in a 12 minute spell before the break to put the result beyond doubt, while two goals from Riyad Mahrez in the second half put the icing on a cake against a rival who look favourites for a swift return to the Championship.

Harry Kane was back on the score-sheet and looking sharper than in recent matches as Tottenham won 2-1 away to Brighton to end a three-game losing streak, while Watford remain in the top four with a 1-1 draw away to Fulham in an entertaining match.

Watford will feel they should have done better than just Andre Grey’s first half goal against a rival that improved after the break.

Newly promoted Wolves once again showed their claws with a brave 1-1 draw away to Manchester United, who are now eight points behind Liverpool.

Fred looked to have put Jose Mourinho’s side on their way, but Joao Moutinho levelled for Wolves in the second half and Adama Traore’s late cameo for the visitors means Nuno Espiritu Santo was probably the happier of two Portuguese coaches at the end of the game.

Leicester City bounced back after last weekend’s thrashing to Bournemouth with a 3-1 win over Huddersfield with England Under-21 player James Maddison the inspiration in attack and hinting he may make the step up to full international before too long.

Huddersfield are still struggling and are now at the bottom with just two points after Burnley suddenly kick-started their season with a 4-0 win at home to Bournemouth. Aaron Lennon provided two assists, while Ashley Barnes scored twice to leave Bournemouth coach Eddie Howe lamenting that despite having 62 percent of the ball, his side had been well beaten. “There are lessons for us to learn,” he admitted.

Finally Newcastle United failed to win again as they drew 0-0 at Crystal Palace and next weekend’s home game against Leicester City is starting to look vital for Rafael Benitez and his men.

13 Indians, Israelis with blind climbers, scale Mt. Kilimanjaro

September 24, 2018 by Nasheman

Mumbai In an unique adventure sports initiative, a group of blind and able-bodied climbers from India and Israel have scaled the world’s fourth highest and Africa’s tallest peak, Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, an organiser said here on Monday.

The climb between September 8-14 was billed as India’s first Inclusive Climb. It included two blind climbers from India and one from Israel, besides 10 others, said the founder of Summitting4Hope (S4H) and expedition leader Anusha Subramanian.

“The climb to the 5885-metre high Mt. Kilimanjaro, the highest free-standing mountain in the world, is another victory of inclusion, which is close to the hearts of S4H and Adventures Beyond Barriers Foundation (ABBF).

“It re-evaluated our rigid views about disability and shattered stereotypes that plague persons with disability,” Subramanian, a media professional told news-persons.

She said it is appalling that as a society, we define what ‘they can’ and ‘cannot do’, but combating severe fatigue and acute mountain sickness, all the participants successfully summitted Mt. Kilimanjaro.

The inclusive climb included 14-year old Baepi Donio of Israel — the youngest climber, besides a German teacher, a mother-son duo, two independent filmmakers and six local and three Indian mountain guides in the expedition.

The Pune-based ABBF founder and one of the blind climbers, Divyanshu Ganatra, said that “exclusion is something that persons with disability routinely encounter and with disability, in India, comes ‘invisibility'”, but the real challenge is to understand despite the differences.

“Mountains and nature or outdoors don’t differentiate between anyone, so why is it that we discriminate among people? I believe that to change something, you have to change yourself,” said Subramanian.

Besides Ganatra and Subramanian, the 13-member group included filmmakers Sehran Mohsin and Omkar Potdar, mountain guide Karn Kowshik, IT consultant Prasad Gurav, German teacher Omana Kale, Israelis Uri Basha, Sophie Donio and her 14-year old son Baepi, adventure sports enthusiast Vaishak J.P., motivational speaker Nupur Pittie and consultant Adi Raheja.

The ABBF is said to be the only NGO in the country working with cross-disabilities by providing more opportunities to disabled persons with adaptive adventure and sports activities, marathons, tandem cycling, scuba-diving, paragliding and mountaineering.

S4H, co-founded by Subramanian and Guneet Puri in 2013 with the aim to rehabilitate the flood-ravaged people of Uttarakhand, has supported other causes like Kashmir floods, Nepal earthquake and since last year the disabled persons especially from the economically weaker income groups.

Asia Cup 2018: Rohit, Dhawan brush aside Pakistan

September 24, 2018 by Nasheman

Continuing their winning run, India handed out an another humiliating nine-wicket defeat to arch-rivals Pakistan in the ongoing Asia Cup tournament here on Sunday.

Chasing an average 238-run target, Indian openers Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan single-handedly dominated the Pakistani bowling attack to add another defeat to the Sarfraz Ahmed-led side in the tournament.

Pakistan, looking for wickets, got a respite too late, as a run out by Hasan Ali packed back Dhawan when India was 28 runs away from a comfortable win.

It was a cake walk for incoming batsman Ambati Rayudu (12 off 18) to lead his side to an another convincing victory in the tournament.

Earlier, Shoaib Malik’s disciplined innings along with useful contribution from Sarfraz helped Pakistan post 237/7 against India.

Malik scored 78 runs in 90 balls and Sarfraz made 44 runs in 66 balls to forge a crucial 107-run fourth wicket partnership to guide their team to a respectable total.

Electing to bat, Pakistan began on a decent note, forging a 24 run partnership for the first wicket before opener Imam-ul-Haq (10) was dismissed by Yuzvendra Chahal in the eighth over via Decision Review System (DRS).

Fakhar Zaman (31), who looked good in the middle, was the next to go. He was adjudged leg before wicket off Kuldeep Yadav in the 15th over. Soon, Babar Azam was run out while trying to steal a single off Ravindra Jadeja.

With three wickets down at just 58 runs, experienced duo Malik and Sarfraz joined hands and took Pakistan out of troubled waters.

The duo stitched a brilliant partnership, hitting some glorious boundaries and sixes.

Just when things were going smooth for Pakistan, Kuldeep broke the partnership, taking Sarfraz’s wicket in the 40th over.

Unperturbed, Malik kept on playing his shots and maintained a good run rate. But while trying to increase the run rate, Malik gifted a simple catch to Mahendra Singh Dhoni off Jasprit Bumrah. He slammed four boundaries and two sixes.

Towards the end, Asif Ali (30) also contributed handsomely along with Shadab Khan (10) Mohammad Nawaz (15) to complete the innings at 237/7 in their allotted 50 overs.

For India, Bumrah, Chahal and Kuldeep took two wickets each.

Brief scores: Pakistan 237/7 (Shoaib Malik 78; Jasprit Bumrah 2/29), lost to India 238/1 (Rohit Sharma 111*, Shikhar Dhawan 114)

Bangladesh clinch thriller against Afghanistan

September 24, 2018 by Nasheman

Hashmatullah Shahidi’s 71 went in vain as Afghanistan lost a thrilling contest to Bangladesh by three runs in a Super Four tie of Asia Cup 2018 here on Sunday.

Opting to bat first, Bangladesh rode on Mahmudullah’s 74 and Imrul Kayes’s 72 to put an average 250-tun target before minnows Afghanistan.

In reply, Afghanistan lost wickets at regular intervals despite a brilliant opening by Mohammad Shahzad (53).

After his fall, Shahidi showed a terrific fight to put things in control but lacked support from the other end as no other batsman was able to show any resistance and Afghanistan eventually lost by three runs.
