Asiad 2018: India lose to Taiwan in men’s handball

August 26, 2018 by Nasheman

Jakarta India produced a spirited fight before being outplayed by Taiwan in Group 3 match in the men’s handball competition at the 18th Asian Games here on Sunday.

The Indians were let down by some poor defending during a 31-35 loss in what their third match in the group stage.

India are now second in the group with four points from three matches. Taiwan finished the group stage at the top spot with eight points, having won all their four matches.

India had started their campaign with an easy 45-19 win over Malaysia. They then edged out arch-rivals Pakistan 28-27 in a thrilling contest which saw the winning goal being scored in the dying seconds.

The Indians will take on hosts Indonesia in their final group engagement on August 29.

Goalkeeper Kamaljeet Singh was one of the standout performers for India during Sunday’s match as he pulled off a string of brilliant saves to keep the deficit within manageable limits right till the end.

The Indians enjoyed the height and physical advantage which allowed their forwards to score at regular intervals. But they were made to work hard for each goal by the well organised Taiwan defence.

The occasional bout of poor co-ordination and some below par play on the wings also harmed the Indian cause.

Naveen Punia and Sachin Bhardwaj were the top scorers for India with five goals each while the experienced Greenidge D’Cunha got four.

But the real let down for the Indians throughout this tournament has been their leaky defence. The defenders struggled to get together a semblance of co-ordination during Sunday’s game. The man marking was extremely poor and the occasional tendency to give the ball away easily saw them concede soft goals.

Taiwan were easily the superior team since their technical and tactical ability was street ahead of their opponents. Their tight, well organised defence and the ability to create fast counter-attacks from the backline coupled with their lighting quick speed have seen them dominate all their group matches.

Low muscle strength linked to premature death: Study

August 26, 2018 by Nasheman

New York, Aug 26 (IANS) Individuals with weaker muscles do not typically live as long as their stronger peers, and are 50 per cent more likely to die earlier, finds a study.

According to researchers, muscle strength may be an even more important predictor of overall health and longevity than muscle mass.

In addition, hand grip strength specifically has been found to be inversely related to mobility limitations and disability.

However, despite being a relatively simple and cost-effective test, grip strength measurement is not currently part of most routine physicals, they said.

“Maintaining muscle strength throughout life-and especially in later life-is extremely important for longevity and ageing independently,” said lead researcher Kate Duchowny, post-doctoral student at the University of California-San Francisco.

The study, published in the Journal of Gerontology: Medical Sciences, highlights the importance of integrating grip strength measurements into routine care-not just for older adults but even in midlife.

“Having hand grip strength be an integral part of routine care would allow for earlier interventions, which could lead to increased longevity and independence for individuals,” Duchowny said.

For the study, the team analysed data of 8,326 men and women, aged 65 and older.

After adjusting for socio-demographic factors, chronic health conditions and smoking history, the results showed that people with low muscle strength are 50 per cent more likely to die earlier.

Over 100 specially designed stations, terminals coming up along DFC By Arun Kumar Das

August 26, 2018 by Nasheman

New Delhi The Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation is gearing up to set up more than 100 railway stations and terminals — all of them “specially designed” — along the 3,360-km-long, much-delayed network linking the eastern and western seaboards to the northern heartland.

Besides, the dedicated freight corridor, known as DFC, will have as many as 12 private freight terminals, 15 private sidings and 10 goods sheds to cater to over 300 million tonnes of traffic a year from 2020-21.

Designs of these new DFC buildings will be influenced by local culture and architecture so that they become iconic structures of the area’s skyline, a senior official of the Corporation said.

“Special care has been taken that all the station buildings reflect the heritage of the region,” the official told IANS, not wishing to be identified.

Passing through nine states and 60 districts, the Rs 81,459 crore project will have 48 stations and junctions along the Western DFC and 58 in the Eastern DFC.

While the Western DFC will cover 1,504 km from Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust near Navi Mumbai to Dadri in Uttar Pradesh, traversing through Vadodara-Ahmedabad-Palanpur-Phulera-Rewari, the Eastern DFC covers 1,856 km from Ludhiana in Punjab to Dankuni, near Kolkata in West Bengal, and will traverse the states of Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Jharkhand.

“Many private players have shown interest to build multi-modal logistics parks and terminals along the corridor to facilitate value addition — including packaging, labelling, retailing and transportation of goods on the dedicated route,” the official said.

All the newly-designed station buildings are expected to be ready before the corridor becomes operational in 2020-21.

There is a focus on station buildings as economic activities get a boost around the rail stations and terminals.

The Western DFC — a section of which (between Ateli in Haryana and Phulera in Rajasthan) opened for a trial run on August 15 — is expected to largely carry petroleum products, imported fertilisers and coal besides steel and iron among others in double-stack containers.

According to initial estimate, Western DFC will carry about 152.24 milliion tonnes (MT) of goods in 2020-21.

The Eastern DFC aims to speed up the movement of coal, cement, fertilisers, foodgrain and general goods, among others. The expected traffic on the Eastern DFC is 153.23 MT in 2020-21.

The Western and Eastern DFCs — both of which will be fully electrified — will intersect at Dadri, near Delhi.

Also, in a first for Indian Railways, there will be a time table for freight trains once the DFCs are operational.

The eastern wing of the DFC is being funded by the World Bank and western side is being financed by the Japanese International Cooperation Agency, or JICA.

US stocks close higher amid economic data

August 26, 2018 by Nasheman

New York US stocks closed higher as investors digested a batch of economic data.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average on Friday rose 133.37 points, or 0.52 per cent, to 25,790.35. The S&P 500 was up 17.71 points, or 0.62 per cent, to 2,874.69, Xinhua news agency reported.

The Nasdaq Composite Index increased 67.52 points, or 0.86 per cent, to 7,945.98.

New orders for manufactured durable goods in July decreased $4.3 billion or 1.7 per cent to $246.9 billion, said the Commerce Department on Friday. The decrease followed a 0.7 per cent increase in June.

Excluding transportation, new orders increased 0.2 per cent. Excluding defence, new orders decreased 1 per cent.

US weekly jobless claims slipped by 2,000 to 210,000 last week despite the ongoing trade worries, the Labor Department said on Thursday. The 4-week moving average was 213,750, a decrease of 1,750 from the previous week’s unrevised average.

Meanwhile, investors also paid close attention to Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell’s speech delivered at the Jackson Hole Symposium in Wyoming, where leading central bankers are meeting to discuss the future of monetary policy.

“If the strong growth in income and jobs continues, further gradual increases in the target range for the federal funds rate will likely be appropriate,” said Powell.

On Wednesday, the US central bank released the minutes of its latest monetary policy meeting, where Fed officials saw an escalation in international trade disputes as a potentially “consequential downside risk” for the US economy.

While many Fed officials signalled that the central bank was ready to raise interest rates as soon as next month, some worried that current trade disputes could force the central bank to rethink its interest rate hike plans.

Indian jails are decent places for people like Mallya: Rahul

August 26, 2018 by Nasheman

London Days after the CBI sent a video footage of an Indian jail to a UK court, Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Saturday said that Indian jails are “decent places for people like Vijay Mallya”.

Rahul attacked the Modi government for its “lenient” approach towards fugitive offenders like Nirav Modi, Mehul Choksi and Mallya.

“Before leaving India, Mallya met a few senior leaders of BJP and that’s documented. I won’t name who, but he did meet them,” Gandhi said during his interaction with the Indian Journalists’ Association here.

Gandhi was responding to a question how he thinks the Modi government is handling Mallya’s case and whether Indian jails are up to scratch.

“I think Indian prisons are very decent places as far as Mallya is concerned,” he said.

He said law should be equal for all. “Just because you are Mallya and have Rs 9,000 crore in the bank, so you require a different jail, it should not be…,” the Congress leader said.

The Central Bureau of Investigation has sent a video footage of Mumbai’s Arthur Road Jail’s Barrack No 12 where Mallya is supposed to be kept after extradicion.

The specifications of the jail barrack were highlighted after a UK court asked the Indian authorities to submit a video of the jail compartment where Mallya would be kept.

The UK court’s directions came after Mallya’s defence team focused its objections on the lack of natural light available in Barrack 12 and claimed that the Indian government assurance cannot be relied upon.

Targeting the Centre, the Congress chief said that they are “leninent” for fugitive offenders and it did not act against PNB scam accused Nirav Modi and Mehul Choksi, of the Gitanjali group, who are wanted by the Indian agencies in Rs 13,500 crore Punjab National Bank (PNB) fraud case.

He said that there are “relationships” between Nirav Modi, Choksi and the Prime Minister.

“There are relationships between Nirav Modi, Choksi and the Prime Minister. And these relationships come in the middle of justice,” he alleged.

Gandhi questioned: “Indian banks gave Rs 35,000 crore loan to Nirav Modi. Narendra Modi let him run away from India. How many jobs did Nirav Modi create? On what basis was he given Rs 35,000 crore? What were the foundations of his business and why aren’t you trying to get him back?”.

26 Jharkhand farmers leave for Israel: C.M

August 26, 2018 by Nasheman

Ranchi Jharkhand Chief Minister Raghubar Das said on Sunday that a 26-member farmers’ team left for Israel on a four-day trip to study farming techniques.

” You (farmers) are going to Israel on the pious day of Raksha Bandhan with an aim to increase farmers’ income. Learn Israel’s technique of farming and adopt it in our state and share the experience with others,” Das said while seeing off the team.

“Israel is smaller than Jharkhand area wise but the country’s per capita income is more than India due to farming. We should always learn from a place where something better is happening. Today Jharkhand is a deficit state as far as foodgrain production is concerned. But those days are not far when Jharkhand will become self dependent and export foodgrains to other states.”

The farmers will learn dairy farming, production of vegetables and fruits, drip irrigation and other things.

The team is being led by Agriculture Secretary Pooja Singhal.

Nation stands in solidarity with flood-hit Kerala: Modi

August 26, 2018 by Nasheman

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday expressed solidarity with Kerala and said that people from all walks of life across the country have come in support of those whose lives were devastated in the massive floods.

“In today’s pressing, hard times, the entire nation is with Kerala. Our sympathies are with those families who lost their loved ones. Loss of lives cannot be compensated, but I assure the grief-stricken families that in this moment of suffering and misery, 125 crore Indians stand by them,” Modi said in his monthly “Mann Ki Baat” programme.

“I earnestly pray for those injured in this natural disaster to get well soon. I firmly believe that the sheer grit and courage of the people of the state will see Kerala rise again,” he added.

The Prime Minister said that while the monsoon, on one hand, brings a new ray of hope to the toiling farmers and provides much needed succor to the scorched trees and shrubs and to parched water bodies, on the other hand excessive rainfall causes devastating floods.

“Disasters, unfortunately leave behind a trail of destruction. But one gets to witness facets of humanity, humaneness during disasters,” Modi said.

“From Kutch to Kamrup, from Kashmir to Kanyakumari, everyone is endeavouring to contribute in some way or the other so that wherever a disaster strikes, be it Kerala or any other part of India, human life returns to normalcy. Irrespective of age group or area of work, people are contributing,” he said.

Modi commended the armed forces involved in the rescue and relief operations in the state for “leaving no stone unturned as saviours of those trapped in the floods”.

“I would like to specially mention the arduous endeavours of the National Disaster Response Force daredevils. At this moment of hardship and agony, their service stands out as a shining example,” he said.

Discussions on simultaneous polls gaining momentum: Modi

August 26, 2018 by Nasheman

“A discussion in the country is gaining momentum for having simultaneous polls in states and Centre. People are sharing their views for and against. It is good sign for healthy democracy,” Modi said in the 47th edition of his monthly radio programme, “Mann Ki Baat”.

He also said that late Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee brought fundamental reforms in the electoral process and courageously removed shortcomings related to people’s representative.

“It will be a fitting tribute to Atal ji to develop best practices, sustained effort to strengthen democracy and promote discussions with an open mind,” he said.
