Senior journalist Kuldip Nayar dead

August 23, 2018 by Nasheman

new delhi Senior journalist, author and human rights activist Kuldip Nayar died at a hospital here. He was 95, his family said on Thursday.

Nayar breathed his last at the Escorts Hospital at 12.30 a.m. The cremation will take place at 1 p.m. on Thursday afternoon.

Born on August 14, 1923, in Sialkot (Pakistan), Nayar was among the country’s first syndicated columnists and wrote several books.

He was appointed High Commissioner to the UK in 1990 and nominated to the Rajya Sabha in 1997.

Nayar started his journalistic career with the Urdu daily “Anjam” in 1948. He worked in the Press Information Bureau as a Press Officer to then Home Ministers Govind Ballabh Pant and Lal Bahadur Shastri.

He was the editor and General Manager of United News of India (UNI) and also the editor of The Statesman. He also worked with the Indian Express, The Times, The Spectator and the Evening Star.

He was also the author of 15 books including “Beyond the Lines”, “India after Nehru” and “Emergency Retold”.

Senior journalist H.K. Dua, who knew Nayar for 54 years, described him as a “good friend”, a “great journalist” and said his death was a loss to the profession.

“Till the last, he was working. At the age of 94, he kept his interest alive in the news world. He was a great chaser of news and broke many stories in his life. He knew much more of what was happening behind the news than many other journalists and got lots of inside information. Essentially, he remained a thorough journalist,” Dua told IANS.

He said Nayar also made efforts for peace between India and Pakistan and organised candle-light demonstrations.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Ram Nath Kovind were among leaders who condoled Nayar’s death.

Modi termed him an intellectual giant and recalled his role as a staunch opponent of the Emergency.

“Kuldip Nayar was an intellectual giant of our times. Frank and fearless in his views, his work spanned across many decades. His strong stand against the Emergency, public service and commitment to a better India will always be remembered. Saddened by his demise. My condolences,” Modi said in a tweet.

Kovind described him as a determined champion of democracy.

“Sad to hear of the passing of Kuldip Nayar, veteran editor and writer, diplomat and parliamentarian, and a determined champion of democracy during the Emergency. His readers will miss him. Condolences to his family and associates,” he said in a tweet.

August 23, 2018 by Nasheman

I dedicate this victory to kerala flood victims : kohli

August 23, 2018 by Nasheman

Nottingham,India skipper Virat Kohli on Wednesday celebrated the 203-run thrashing of England in the third Test by dedicating the win to the flood victims in the southern state of Kerala.

Coming back from a 0-2 deficit, India put up a clinical all-round performance at Trent Bridge to deflate England, who could only blame their dismal batting effort for the loss.

“We, as a team, want to dedicate this win to the flood victims in Kerala. This is our bit we can do as the Indian cricket team. A tough time there,” Kohli said at the post-match presentation, where he was adjudged the Man-of-the-Match for his knocks of 97 and 103.

“The victory was much-needed in this series and in context, and to have been clinical in all departments is a victory for the entire dressing room. A complete Test for us. There was no panic, and we were outplayed in only one game out of the last five, and that was Lord’s,” he added.

The 29-year-old praised his batsmen for putting runs on the board that gave his bowlers, including the injured off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, the cushion to attack the in-form English batting.

“We dominated in this game because we put runs on the board and then the bowlers did well, they were waiting and ready, even Ashwin did well with his injury,” he said.

“The bowling group was ready to take 20 wickets again, and I’m glad the batsmen stepped up. So we, as batsmen, did well to give them a cushion for the bowlers to go hard.

“Even the slips did well, and this mix of all skills couldn’t have come at a better time,” he added.

With the win, the visitors reduced the lead to 1-2 in the five-match rubber, but Kohli is confident that his team has the ability to turn the tables and make it 3-2.

“We definitely believe we can come back from 0-2 to 3-2, we just need to keep moving forward, keep winning. We wouldn’t be 2-1 if we didn’t believe.”

“The respect and the belief in the change room is important, and one must keep wanting to win. We need to bring out the impact performances in the next two Tests as well,” he added.

Prithvi, Hanuma picked for remaining England Tests Vijay, Kuldeep dropped

August 23, 2018 by Nasheman

Prithvi Shaw, the 2018 Under-19 World Cup winning skipper, on Wednesday broke into the India Test side even as the BCCI senior selection committee dropped off-colour opener Murali Vijay and Kuldeep Yadav from the squad for the remaining two Tests of the five-match rubber against England.

The 18-year-old Shaw, who captained the India colts to the World Cup title in February, has since been part of India’s A teams, besides being picked by the Delhi Daredevils in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Besides Shaw, Andhra Pradesh skipper Hanuma Vihari was also picked in the squad that will face England in the fourth and fifth Tests at Southampton and London respectively.

Both Shaw and Vihari are in great batting form, having each belted centuries against South Africa A earlier this month. They also impressed with the bat during their recent trip to England.

Meanwhile, the axe on Vijay came on expected lines after he was dropped from the Trent Bridge Test that India won by a handsome 203 runs on Wednesday and managed to stay alive in the five-Test series.

The 34-year-old Vijay, who played the opening two Tests at Edgbaston and London, could manage just 26 runs.

On the other hand, Kuldeep’s selection under overcast conditions at Lord’s had already raised a few eyebrows and the chinaman has now been sent back home to play for the India A team.

Head coach Ravi Shastri said at the end of the third Test that he hoped premier off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin to recover from his hip injury by the time the fourth Test starts on August 30. Left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja is already waiting for his turn.

India squad for fourth and fifth Tests: Virat Kohli (Captain), Shikhar Dhawan, Lokesh Rahul, Prithvi Shaw, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane, Rishabh Pant (wk), Hardik Pandya, Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Jasprit Bumrah, Ishant Sharma, Mohammed Shami, Umesh Yadav, Shardul Thakur, Karun Nair, Dinesh Karthik (wk), Hanuma Vihari.

Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan’s official Twitter account tweeted twice on Tuesday afternoon to once again invite India to dialogue and pursue peace, terming it the “best way to alleviate poverty and uplift the people of the subcontinent”, according to a Dawn report.

The tweets, which included a note of gratitude to longtime friend Navjot Singh Sidhu for attending PM Khan’s inauguration on a special invitation, reiterated the new prime minister’s belief that “without peace our people cannot progress.
” Addressing sections of the Indian media, politicians and civil society who have been criticising Sidhu for visiting Pakistan, PM Khan said: “Those in India who targeted him [Sidhu] are doing a great disservice to peace in the subcontinent.

“He was an ambassador of peace and was given amazing love and affection by people of Pakistan,” the prime minister wrote.

“To move forward, Pakistan and India must dialogue and resolve their conflicts, including Kashmir,” the premier was quoted as saying.

“The best way to alleviate poverty and uplift the people of the subcontinent is to resolve our differences through dialogue and start trading.

No one questioned Modi’s unscheduled visit to Pakistan: Sidhu

August 21, 2018 by Nasheman

Slamming those who criticised him for hugging the Pakistan Army Chief Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa, Punjab Cabinet minister Navjot Singh Sidhu on Tuesday said that no one had raised questions about Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s unscheduled visit to Pakistan.

Defending his visit, he said: “My visit was not about politics but on a warm invite from an old friend. Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee had travelled on the bus to Lahore and Prime Minister Narendra Modi made an unscheduled trip to Lahore in 2015, on his way back from an official visit to Afghanistan.”

During that surprise stopover, Modi had hugged then Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, he said.

“No one is questioning Prime Minister Modi,” he added.

Sidhu said his seating at the swearing-in ceremony of Imran Khan as Pakistan’s Prime Minister in Islamabad on August 18 was changed at the last minute and he did not know who sat next to him.

He was responding to the criticism for sitting next to Pakistan-Occupied-Kashmir President Masood Khan at the ceremony.

Without mincing words, he said his visit to Pakistan was a tribute to Vajpayee, who wanted peace between the two countries.

Sidhu said he received a lot of love and affection in Pakistan and was disappointed by some of the reactions in India. He said he had received the invitation for the ceremony 10 times.

Sidhu said he went to Pakistan at the invitation and repeated reminders from Khan.

“Even our government gave permission to me to visit Pakistan. Two days after Pakistan gave him the visa, our External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj called me and said that I had been given permission (to go),” Sidhu said.

Two days earlier Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh said Sidhu’s hug with Bajwa was “not a nice gesture and was completely avoidable”.

Sidhu should have avoided indulging in such a gesture when Indian soldiers are getting killed everyday on the borders, the Chief Minister told reporters here.

At this Sidhu replied: “I was criticised by the Captain (Amarinder Singh), by top Congress leaders. It is not necessary that if the Captain has spoken against me, I should too.”

“Many people from Congress have spoken on this, including Captain Sahab. It’s a democracy and everyone has the right to have an opinion,” Sidhu said.

Shooter Rajput bags silver at Asiad 2018

August 21, 2018 by Nasheman

Indian shooter Sanjeev Rajput clinched a silver medal in the men’s 50 metre Rifle 3 Positions event at the 18th Asian Games here on Tuesday.

Sanjeev scored 452.7 in the final. The 37-year-old had earlier bagged bronze in the same category at the 2006 Doha Asian Games.

China’s Hui Zicheng secured the gold medal after scoring 453.3, while Japan’s Takayuki Matsumoto settled for bronze with a score of 441.4.

The 37-year old Rajput gave a good account of himself in the keeling and prone positions, although he struggled in the standing round which eventually stood in the way of him winning the gold.

Rajput rallied to recover from 7.8 in the third series of the kneeling position to finish in the top position with a score of 151.2.

In prone, Rajput consistently shot 10s and was ahead of the pack from start to finish. He had a total score of 307.1 after 30 shots.

In the standing position, Rajput led after the first series with a score of 355.6. But as Zicheng fought to catch up with him, Rajput lost his spark and ended second best.

19 year old commits suicide after school certificates get destroyed in Kerala rains

August 21, 2018 by Nasheman

Heartbroken on finding his class twelve certificates destroyed in the devastation caused by the deadly monsoon in Kerala, a 19-year-old boy, committed suicide, police said on Monday.

With his house fully waterlogged in the downpour, the boy, Kailash, and his parents, hailing from Karanthur in Kozhikode district, had moved to a relief camp three days ago.

Kailash had got admission for a course in the Industrial Training Institute (ITI) and had purchased new clothes and set apart some money for higher studies, they said. As the rains abated for a while, he returned home on Sunday to take a look at the house and was shocked to find his plus two certificates soaked in water and in tatters.

A Police officer attached to the Kunnamanagalam station said the boy’s death came to light later in the day on Sunday when his parents came to clean up the house as the water receded. They were shocked to see him hanging, police said.

His shattered father, a labourer, had pinned all his hopes on his son as all their belongings had been mostly destroyed in the rains.

In the worst affected Chengannur in Alappuzha district, a woman was wailing saying she had lost her Aadhar card, Ration card and all ID proofs. “All my belongings, my Aadhar and Ration cards and ID proofs are all gone. Only I am alive. My relatives do not even know I exist,” she mourned.

Heavy rains in Kerala have so far claimed 210 lives and forced over 7.14 lakh people to take shelter in relief camps in the state.
