BJP’s Rajasthan campaign begins from August 4

The BJP will formally start its election campaign for the Rajasthan Assembly elections with Suraaj Gaurav Yatra on August 4, said state party president Madan Lal Saini.

Starting from Charbhuja in Udaipur zone, a procession will be taken out under the leadership of Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje Scindia and will be inaugurated by BJP president Amit Shah, said Saini speaking to the media at the BJP headquarters here.

The yatra will pass through each district of the state covering all 200 Assembly seats. It will culminate at Ajmer where Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be present, said Saini.

The BJP will present its report card and will update people on the benefits of various public welfare schemes launched by it.

Karnataka draws blueprint for farm loan waiver

he Karnataka government has drawn a blueprint to waive crop loans of farmers from state-run and co-operative banks in the southern state, an official statement said.

“The government has prepared a blueprint to waive off loans up to Rs 48,000 crore that includes loans from co-operative banks, subsidy and crop loans granted by the state-run banks,” said a statement from the Chief Minister’s Office.

The blueprint includes the Rs 34,000 crore loans to be waived as announced by Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy while presenting the state Budget on July 5.

Total loans amounting up to Rs 48,000 crore to be waived include Rs 37,159 crore crop loans granted to the farmers by state-owned banks and about Rs 9,500 crore of current loans, the statement added.

The banks are too ready the details of farm loans from across the state that is eligible to waive, and the process of the waiver will commence after the state’s review.

As per the election manifesto promises of the Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S) to waive farm loans if voted to power, Kumaraswamy, who is also the state party chief, had announced in his budget speech to waive up to Rs 2 lakh crop loans per farmer family.

“All crop loans defaulted by farmers up to December 31, 2017, are waived in the first stage. Only loans borrowed from district co-operative banks and state co-operatives are waived in the first stage,” he had said.

The budget had also proposed to allot Rs 6,500 crore to enable farmers to avail fresh loans after they submit a clearance certificate from the department concerned that their loan arrears have been waived.

The previous waiver by former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had cost the state exchequer Rs 8,165-crore.

Starvation deaths: BJP, Congress attack Delhi government

A day after the starvation deaths of three minor girls in east Delhi, both the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party and the Congress on Wednesday flayed the Aam Aadmi Party government on the issue.

The BJP said that instead of playing politics over ration distribution, the Arvind Kejriwal government should concentrate on meeting the basic needs of the people.

“Such a sad incident is happening in Delhi where the government claims to be championing the cause of providing ration to the poor,” Delhi BJP President Manoj Tiwari said.

Expressing shock and dismay over the deaths of three siblings in Mandawali, he said that such an incident in a constituency represented by Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, who on Wednesday ordered a magisterial probe, had “saddened” him.

“We hope that the Arvind Kejriwal government will learn a lesson and concentrate on providing the people the basic necessities,” the BJP leader said.

An autopsy at the Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital suggested that starvation “appears” to be the cause of the demise of the three sisters on Tuesday in Mandawali area of east Delhi.

According to police, the three — aged two, four and eight years — were found unconscious in their one-room house by their neighbours and later declared brought dead at the LBS Hospital.

The northeast Delhi MP said that a thorough inquiry was necessary and that society too should take notice and come forward to help the destitute.

The Congress claimed that the bodies had been shifted to the Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital to get the “desired autopsy report”.

In a series of tweets in Hindi, Delhi Congress chief Ajay Maken said: “Three kids die due to starvation in Delhi’s Mandawali. Post-mortem being shifted to GTB Hospital from LBS Hospital in a bid to get the desired reports. This family doesn’t have the ration card. The number of ration cards has gone down to 15 lakh from 33.5 lakh during earlier Congress rule in Delhi.”

The former Minister said that he will visit the bereaved family on Thursday morning.

“We had alerted the Delhi government earlier that about nine lakh eligible families were denied the ration cards. Three kids have died due to starvation in the constituency of Sisodia, who is buying a new vehicle worth Rs 20 lakh.”

Girl raped, blackmailed by dance teacher

A dance teacher allegedly raped his student for over a year and extorted Rs 2 lakh, threatening to make public a video clip of the rape.

The police said they received a complaint from the father of the girl stating that his daughter (16), a student at Rudra Dance Academy located in Sahibabad, was lured by dance teacher Sumit Ghosh alias Rudra Ghosh and raped by him on the dance academy premises.

The accused then allegedly made a video clip of the crime and threatened to make it public if she resisted. “He extorted Rs 2 lakh from the girl in the last one year. Her studies suffered because of the teacher’s criminal act,” the father said in the complaint.

The police have registered a criminal case against the dance teacher. “We have arrested three persons in the case,” said SSP Vaibhav Krishna.

Mohammed Nalapad apologizes in public for his assult on a youth.

Mohammed Nalapad, son of Congress MLA NA Haris has publicly apologized for his assault on a youth and said that he will never hurt anybody in future.

Tending to a social occasion in his father’s constituency, Shanthinagara, Nalapad turned emotional and stated, “Before going to jail, I didn’t know anything about the problems of common and poor people. I didn’t think about water shortage. My life was luxurious with no stresses. I confronted water shortage in jail. It helped me to understand the life of common people. I will try my best to help you people in improving civic amenities.”

He said that the days that he spent in jail had shown him a few lessons about the hardships of life. Apologizing to his grandfather and father publicly, Nalapad said, “My grandfather suffered a lot because of me. I caused him so much pain. I will never hurt him again.”

It might be reviewed that the 24-year-old Nalapad was sent to jail after he allegedly assaulted Vidhwath at a pub in Bengaluru. Vidwath endured multiple injuries and is still undergoing treatment.

The incident, however, did not influence his father. Haris won from Shanthinagara constituency in the assembly election.

Govt Has Failed to Stop Attack on Muslims Who Rear Cows: Azam Khan

Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Azam Khan today charged the government of failing to curb attacks on Muslims who rear cows and earn their livelihood from the dairy trade.

Khan’s comments come days after a man in Rajasthan’s Alwar district was lynched on suspicion of cow smuggling.

He said a Muslim becomes a victim of lynching for keeping cows. “The government has not been able to stop such violent activities,” Khan said.

In a sarcastic vein, the SP leader said minorities should neither keep cows nor participate in the milk trade.

Khan alleged that the BJP’s politics was based on “falsehood” and its top leaders speak the language of hate.

55 killings in cross-border firing make 2018 deadliest in recent years

At least 55 people, including 27 army and BSF personnel, have been killed in the first six months of this year in cross-border firing — making it the deadliest in recent years for civilians as well as security forces manning the international border and the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir.

The dead included 15 soldiers, 12 BSF personnel and 28 civilians, Minister of State for Defence Subhash Bhamre said in a written reply in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday.

The overall number is almost double that in 2016 when the Indian Army carried out surgical strikes and destroyed dozens of terror launch hubs in Pakistan-administered Kashmir.

“No personnel of J&K police got killed in the incidents of ceasefire violations and cross-border firing during the last three years and current year upto June,” he said.

Detailing the number of deaths in the last three years, the minister said 26 people — six soldiers, four Border Security Force (BSF) personnel and 16 civilians — were killed in 2015.

In 2016, firing from the Pakistani side again claimed 26 lives — eight soldiers, five BSF troopers and 13 civilians.

Thirty one people — 15 soldiers, four BSF personnel and 12 civilians — were killed in 2017.

The details of militants killed along the LoC and the international border are: 108 in 2015, 150 in 2016, 213 in 2107 and 110 up to July 22 this year.

“Appropriate retaliation to these ceasefire violations has been carried out wherever necessary. During ceasefire violations, the inhabitants of border villages which are vulnerable to shelling or firing are shifted to safer locations to prevent any loss of life,” the minister said.

“All arrangements are made for free boarding, lodging, medicare, water, electricity, food, sanitation and transport to safer places in such cases. The defences along the border are adequately fortified to withstand fire. Continuous improvements, including the usage of modern technology, in the defences are made to make them more robust and resilient.

Five accused in Kolkata carcass meat case get bail

Five out of 12 people arrested for their alleged involvement in the carcass meat selling racket here were on Wednesday granted bail after the state CID failed to produce a charge sheet in the case, 90 days after their arrest.

Two more accused were earlier granted bail on the same grounds.

“Neither a charge sheet has been filed against any of these accused nor the forensic test report of the seized meat could be submitted to the court yet. So the prosecution today (Wednesday) asked the court to accept the bail plea of the accused persons and grant them conditional bail,” the state counsel said outside the Alipore court here.

Sarafat Hossain, one of the main accused in the carcass meat case and former CPI-M councilor Manik Mukherjee were among those who were given bail during the day, he said.

The CID said it could not file the charge sheet due to the non-availability of certain reports.

“Five out of 10 people who were kept in jail custody in the carcass meat case were given bail today. The charge sheet could not be filed due to the non-availability of evasion reports,” Deputy Inspector General, CID, Nishad Parvez told IANS.

Police had earlier this year, busted a racket involved in processing the flesh of carcasses collected from dumping grounds in Kolkata and adjoining suburbs and selling it to local restaurants and departmental stores. Huge quantity of rotten meat was seized from a city cold storage as part of the investigation.

A dozen people were arrested including the kingpin Biswanath Garai, 52, who also owned the cold storage in north Kolkata’s Narkeldanga.

CID took over the probe into the meat racket in May.

Extend compensation scheme for sexual assault victims to child victims too: SC

The scheme proposed by the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) for compensating victims of sexual assault and acid attacks should be made applicable to child victims of such assaults, said the Supreme Court on Wednesday.

A bench of Justice Madan B. Lokur and Justice Deepak Gupta was of the opinion that the scheme should be modified to some extent to include children of sexual assault.

The bench asked senior advocate Indira Jaising, assisting the court as an amicus curiae in the matter, if slight modifications could be done in the ‘Compensation Scheme for Women Victims/Survivors of Sexual Assault/Other Crimes-2018’ to also include child victims.

The bench asked Jaising to submit a note in this regard to the court.

The NALSA’s scheme clearly defines the compensation slabs for victims of sexual assault, acid attacks and even loss of a foetus, and earmarks minimum Rs 5 lakh and Rs 7 lakh respectively for women who go through a crisis post sexual assault or an acid attack/

As per the scheme, a minimum of Rs 5 lakh is to be paid in case of loss of life or gang rape of a victim and maximum of Rs 10 lakh. A minimum amount of Rs 4 lakh is to be paid in case of rape or unnatural sexual assault, with the maximum fixed at Rs 7 lakh.

In case of victims of burning and acid attacks, the minimum compensation will be Rs 7 lakh for total disfigurement, with a maximum of Rs 8 lakh. Rs 5 lakh has been fixed in case of 50 per cent burns, while the upper limit would be Rs 8 lakh.

For loss of limb or body part resulting in 80 per cent permanent disability, Rs 2 lakh is to be given, with Rs 2 lakh in case of grievous physical injury.

The scheme provides that in case of pregnancy on account of rape, the victim would get between Rs 3 lakh and Rs 4 lakh, while for miscarriage or loss of fertility due to such assaults, the amount would be between Rs 2 lakh and Rs 3 lakh.

After the December 16, 2012, gang-rape and murder case in Delhi, the Central government announced in 2013 the Nirbhaya Fund scheme to support state governments and NGOs working for women’s safety.

The court was hearing petitions filed after the 2012 case, raising concerns over the safety and security of women.

Earlier, NALSA had told the apex court that hardly 5-10 per cent of sexual assault victims across the country were able to get compensation under the relevant schemes in various states.

Hardik gets bail, says fight to continue

A local court in Visnagar town of North Gujarat sentenced firebrand Patidar leader Hardik Patel and two others to a two-year jail term and slapped a fine of Rs 50,000 in a 2015 rioting case. The court later granted bail to the three.

The case refers to mob violence that resulted in then BJP legislator Rushikesh Patel’s office being vandalized during a rally in 2015, organised for reservation for the Patel (or Patidar) community in government jobs and educational institutions.

Hours after the sentence, Hardik Patel described the BJP rule in Gujarat as “Hitlershahi.” “I am a sinner, if it is a sin to fight for social justice and rights. If those who fight for truth and their rights are rebels, then I am a rebel,” he said in a statement on a social media platform on Wednesday.

“There was not a single witness who saw me where the incident took place. I respect the court’s decision, but I will exercise my right to challenge it,” he told reporters.

“What about action against policemen who unleashed terror on the agitating Patidars and their families after the August 2015 rally? he asked. Patel was referring to the massive police crackdown after a rally on August 25, 2015, which led to the death of 14 Patel community members.

“The BJP might think I would not be able to fight an election (in 2019) if I am in jail for two years, but let them take it that I am not here to fight elections,” he said. “If I get an opportunity, I can contest an election,” he added.

Patel said he would go ahead with his indefinite fast from August 25, the third anniversary of the Patels’ rally, and re-launch his agitation.

Besides Patel, the other two sentenced were Sardar Patel Group leader Laljibhai Patel and A K Patel. There were 14 others in the same case who were booked for rioting, arson, damage to property and unlawful assembly. However, they were let free.

The earlier ban on Hardik Patel from entering Mehsana district where Visnagar is located, however, remains in place.
