Chidambaram skips investigation in INX Media case

May 31, 2018 by Nasheman

Former Finance Minister P. Chidambaram on Thursday skipped the CBI investigation into the INX Media corruption case after the Delhi High court granted him interim protection from arrest, the probe agency said.

Citing the High Court order, Chidambaram’s lawyer Arun Natarajan told the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) through an application that his client would not join the investigation into the case while court is proceeding with the case.

The response comes in the wake of CBI summons issued to the senior Congress leader on Wednesday asking him to appear before the investigators on Thursday at the agency’s headquarters at south Delhi’s Lodhi Road area to join investigation in the case.

“Chidambaram did not join investigation in INX Media case today (Thursday). We will take the next course of actions against him after further directions from the department,” a CBI official said.

The CBI is now planning to reissue summons against Chidambaram in the case while the time is yet to be decided, he said.

Chidambaram’s move comes after the Delhi High Court on Thursday granted him interim protection from arrest in the INX Media case directing the CBI not to take any coercive action against him till July 3, the next date of hearing.

The CBI on May 15 last year filed an FIR in the case accusing Chidambaram, his son Karti and others for their involvement in irregularities committed in giving INX Media the clearance to receive Rs 305 crore in foreign investment.

The CBI had on February 28 arrested Karti in the case accusing him of taking money to facilitate Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) clearance to INX Media in 2007 when his father was the Finance Minister in the previous United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government. Later, he was granted bail.

The CBI initially alleged that Karti had received Rs 10 lakh as bribe for facilitating the FIPB clearance.

The figure was, however, revised later to about $1 million or Rs 6.5 crore at the current exchange rate.

The CBI and the Enforcement Directorate are probing the case.

“This government will not go tomorrow. We are here for five years,Saying HD Kumaraswamy

May 31, 2018 by Nasheman

Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy of the Janata Dal-Secular has said that waiver of farm loans will be done, and if it was taking a little more time than expected, it was only because he needed to take his coalition partner, the Congress, along on all decisions.

“This government is not in the sleeping mode. We are at the work of Karnataka citizens,” Mr. Kumaraswamy said after the meeting of farmer leaders, top officials and the BJP to draw up the contours of the loan waiver. The assertion was a response to barbs from the BJP’s BS Yeddyurappa who has been targeting the chief minister, accusing him of going back on his loan waiver promise.

Manifestos of all parties released before the election spoke of farmer distress. Mr. Kumaraswamy, who still doesn’t have a cabinet in place because of differences with its ally the Congress over the division of portfolios, held the meeting to take the farm loan waiver plan forward and to reassure farmers that he was serious about the issue.

But all was not smooth sailing as farmers argued among themselves too as well as expressing doubt about the government’s intentions. They kept insisting that the discussion focus on the loan waiver.

Farmers’ representatives were outspoken. “We have not come here to beg. We need help because of the drought,” one farmer said.

“This government will not go tomorrow. We are here for five years. We are here to help you. You have to give me breathing space. Give me time,” the chief minister told them.

His deputy G Parameshwara of the Congress added, “We are talking of 53,000 crores. Mr. Kumaraswamy may have taken that decision if his party had formed the government by itself. As a coalition government, we have to take decisions together.”

The BJP was also represented at the meeting by deputy leader of the opposition, Govind Karjol. He was shouted down at times as farmers demanded to know what the central government was doing to help.

The BJP has been putting pressure on the coalition government to waive the loans and had called a state-wide bandh on Monday on the issue that did not get a very strong response.

Harish of the Karnataka state farmers’ association, farmers needed, “These are all just short-term solutions. We need minimum support price – we need long-term solutions.”

CBI likely to raid against DK Shivakumar and 11 others

May 31, 2018 by Nasheman

Armed with a search warrant it obtained on Wednesday night, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) might raid the houses of friends and relatives of Congress leader DK Shivakumar in connection with the demonetized currency notes case, agency sources said.
One bank manager, who was held in the demonetization currency case, has said that he did it at the behest of senior Congress leader DK Suresh. The CBI has obtained search warrant against Suresh and 11 others.
It is yet to be ascertained whether the Shivakumar is one among those 11.
DK Suresh, who got the information on Wednesday night, held a press meet on Thursday morning alleging that it was a conspiracy against him for helping his brother to prevent the Bharatiya Janata Party from coming to power.
While CBI sources from Delhi were yet to confirm about the raid, sources close to DK Suresh said that the raid had begun, but they were yet to search the house of Suresh.
Brothers deplore witch-hunt
At the press meet, DK Shivakumar and his brother Bangalore Rural MP DK Suresh deplored the political move by BJP government for “letting loose” the CBI against them to lure them to support the BJP.

The leaders alleged that they were under “constant pressure from the BJP sources” since the days Gujarat legislators landed in Bangalore last year to support the BJP. “But the BJP is making every effort to lure us towards them,” the Congress leaders said.

The brothers expressed confidence they would withstand all the “machinations and temptations” and would remain loyal to the Congress party.
As regards search warrants, DK Suresh asserted his name and that of his brother were included afresh after the BJP government failed to prove majority in the Karnataka assembly. It was evident that BJP has to accept the defeat as DK Shivakumar played a prominet role in keeping the Congress and JD(S) legislators together.
The brothers expressed confidence they would withstand all the “machinations and temptations” and would remain loyal to the Congress party.

ICC World XI set to face Windies in charity T20 tie

May 31, 2018 by Nasheman

A galaxy of former and current stars will be in action at the iconic Lord’s on Thursday to play an exhibition match between the ICC World XI and the West Indies and help raise funds for the refurbishment of five cricket stadia in the Caribbean that were damaged by Hurricanes Irma and Maria in 2017.

Former Pakistan skipper Shahid Afridi has finally been named to lead the World XI after England’s limited overs captain Eoin Morgan sustained a broken finger during a domestic match.

“It’s a great honour to be leading the ICC World XI side, that too for such a good cause. I’m sure all the players from either side are looking forward to the match with great enthusiasm and people will get to see some high-quality cricket on Thursday,” Afridi said on Twitter.

The World XI side, in fact, has had more than a few changes since being formally announced.

Morgan was the first name announced, followed by those of Afridi, his compatriot Shoaib Malik and Thisara Perera, the Sri Lanka T20I captain. Next came Rashid Khan, the Afghan leg-spin superstar, and Bangladesh stalwarts Shakib Al Hasan and Tamim Iqbal, followed by Indians Dinesh Karthik and Hardik Pandya and New Zealanders Luke Ronchi and Mitchell McClenaghan.

That completed the XI, but Shakib opted out because of personal reasons and was replaced by the exciting teenaged Nepal leg-spinner Sandeep Lamichhane.

Pandya has also opted out since then, to be replaced by countrymate Mohammed Shami, who has also been swapped with Tymal Mills, while Sam Billings has filled in for Morgan.

English cricketers Adil Rashid and Sam Curran have also been late additions to the 13-man squad.

The squad still wears an extremely strong look. Iqbal, Billings, Karthik, Ronchi and Malik, with Afridi and Perera providing excellent options for a late burst, makes for a mouth-watering batting line-up.

Karthik, Ronchi and Billings are all wicket-keeping candidates, while in McClenaghan, Curran and Mills, there’s a good pace department.

But the most exciting is perhaps the spin attack, or the leg-spin attack, with the two Rashids and Lamichhane all available for selection, not to forget Afridi himself.

With Samuel Badree on the other side, this one could well be the greatest exhibition of T20 leg-spin bowling ever.

Whichever combination Afridi and Andy Flower, the World XI coach, decide to put out on the field should provide excellent competition to the defending ICC World T20 champions.

Carlos Brathwaite, who hit Ben Stokes for four successive sixes to win the Windies the last ICC World T20 at Kolkata’s Eden Gardens in April 2016, is the captain of the Windies side, and the squad has some fantastic T20 talent in their midst.

T20 stars Chris Gayle, Andre Russell, Evin Lewis and Badree are the big names in Brathwaite’s line-up, while in Marlon Samuels, Andre Fletcher, Rovman Powell, Denesh Ramdin, Kesrick Williams and others, there’s a lot of firepower.

Six of those players were a part of the XI that won the World T20 2016 final.

Squads:

ICC World XI: Shahid Afridi (Captain), Sam Billings (WK), Sam Curran, Tamim Iqbal, Tymal Mills, Dinesh Karthik (WK), Rashid Khan, Sandeep Lamichhane, Mitchell McClenaghan, Shoaib Malik, Thisara Perera, Luke Ronchi (WK), Adil Rashid.

West Indies: Carlos Brathwaite (Captain), Samuel Badree, Rayad Emrit, Andre Fletcher, Chris Gayle, Evin Lewis, Ashley Nurse, Keemo Paul, Rovman Powell, Denesh Ramdin (WK), Andre Russell, Marlon Samuels, Kesrick Williams.

Maharashtra LS bypolls: BJP leads one, trails in another

May 31, 2018 by Nasheman

The ruling BJP in Maharashtra is leading in Palghar but trailing in the Bhandara-Gondiya constituency as counting progresses in the May 28 Lok Sabha bypolls here on Thursday.

At 11 a.m., the BJP candidate in Palghar, Rajendra Gavit, notched up over 80,000 votes while his nearest Shiv Sena rival Shriniwas Vanga was trailing at around 62,000 votes.

They were followed by the Bahujan Vikas Aghadi’s Baliram Jadhav at 54,000 votes and Congress’s Damodar Shingada at 17,000 votes.

In Bhandara, the BJP candidate Hemant Patle, who was leading in the earlier rounds of counting, suddenly fell behind Nationalist Congress Party’s Madhukar Kukde, who surged ahead with a lead of over 17,000 votes.

Elections in both the constituencies were marred by large-scale incidents of malfunctioning EVM-VVPATs with all the opposition parties and ruling ally Shiv Sena hurling allegations of foul play and tampering of the machines.

The high-stakes elections in both the seats, came in the wake of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’ vow, to win the elections “come what may” — and his subsequent controversial remarks of using “Saam, Daam, Dand, Bhed” to bag the polls at all costs.

PKL-6: Ex-India skipper Anup goes cheaply at auction

May 31, 2018 by Nasheman

Former India captain Anup Kumar suffered a fall from grace as he commanded a mere Rs 30 lakh at the Pro Kabaddi League (PKL) Season 6 auction here on Wednesday.

Anup, who led India to a record third World Cup title in 2016, will represent the Jaipur Pink Panthers this season.

He had commanded a price of Rs 56.65 lakh last season, while being retained for the fifth consecutive time by the U Mumba franchise. However, he was not retained this season following a run of poor form.

Anup, who made his international debut at the 2010 Asian Games, won the title the same year and retained it in 2014.

Russia lose to Austria in World Cup tune-up

May 31, 2018 by Nasheman

Russia’s defensive weakness was on display as the 2018 FIFA World Cup hosts fell 1-0 to Austria, who failed to qualify for the tournament.

Playing their penultimate international friendly before the World Cup, the Russians started brightly in Wednesday night’s match at the Innsbruck’s Tivoli Stadium here, reports EFE news agency.

But the momentum shifted to the hosts in the 12th minute with a shot on goal by Robert Zulj in his first match as a starter for Austria.

With Marko Arnautovic taking the lead, the Austrians picked up the pace and started asking questions of the Russian defenders.

It was the West Ham United player who set up the only goal of the night, getting the ball to Alessandro Schöpf, who beat Akinfeev to make it 1-0 for Austria in the 28th minute.

The visitors, meanwhile, proved unable to pose any threat to the Austrian goal and were lucky not to go down a man when Granat brought down Arnautovic with a tackle that would have merited a red card under different circumstances.

Arnautovic had a chance to double the lead for Austria early in the second half, but his shot went over the cross-bar.

Both teams made changes in the second period, robbing the contest of rhythm and excitement.

Russia will visit Turkey next week for their final friendly before hosting Saudi Arabia in Moscow on June 14 in the World Cup kick-off.
