She Allegedly Killed Mother For Opposing Relationship With Woman Teacher

April 18, 2018 by Nasheman

A woman was brutally beaten to death in Uttar Pradesh’s Ghaziabad district for allegedly objecting to her daughter’s relationship with a woman teacher. Rashmi Rana, 21, and her teacher Nisha Gautama attacked the victim with an iron rod, leading to severe head injuries.
The duo has been arrested from Ghaziabad Railway Station and after being interrogated the girl has confessed to the crime of killing her mother.

Rashmi Rana, resident of Delhi’s Kavi Nagar, and her partner Nisha Gautama attacked the woman with an iron rod leading to severe head injuries.

The police also said Rashmi Rana had been living with her partner for a while.

“But she (Rashmi) did not want to leave her teacher. So in a fit of anger, she hit her due to which she (mother) died,” Superintendent of Police Akash Tomar said.

The police also confirmed that Pushpa Devi’s husband was not at home when the incident took place.

After confessing to the crime, Rashmi Rana told the police that her mother frequently tortured her due to her relationship.

Both Rashmi and her partner Nisha have been sent to jail.

The girl’s father Satish Kumar had filed FIR (First Information Report) at Kavi Nagar police station on March 9 against his daughter and the teacher. He had accused them of battering his wife, Pushpa Devi, with an iron rod which later caused her death.

Saudi’s first cinema theatre to open today in over 3 decades ‘Black Panther’ to end 35-year movie ban

April 18, 2018 by Nasheman

Saudi Arabia’s first cinema theatre in over 3 decades will open on Wednesday (April 18) in Riyadh after ban was lifted last year.
Blockbuster action flick ‘Black Panther’ will play at a cinema test screening in Saudi Arabia on Wednesday, the first in a series of trial runs before movie theatres open to the wider public next month.

The Kingdom lifted a 35-year ban on cinemas last year as part of a far-reaching liberalisation drive, with US giant AMC Entertainment granted the first licence to operate movie theatres.

Saudi Arabia announced it will open 40 cinemas in 15 Saudi cities over the next five years as part of plans to develop the entertainment sector in the Kingdom. 100 theatres will open in approximately 25 Saudi cities by 2030.

Saudi Ministry of Information confirmed 350 cinema theatres with 2,500 screens are slated to be open across several Saudi cities by 2030.
The first company to obtain a license to operate cinemas in Saudi Arabia is AMC.

The Black Panther will be the first film to be shown in the Kingdom’s first cinema. It has now made $665.4 million domestically, which makes it the third-highest grossing film in North American history.

The film will be exhibited in a theatre that can accommodate 620 people at the King Abdullah Financial Center in Riyadh, and the American operator AMC has also scheduled a special event for the historic opening.

Cinema tickets will be initially priced at 50 riyals.

Saudi Arabian Ministry of Culture and Information has estimated the contribution of the cinema sector to its GDP to be over $24 billion.

Cinemas in Saudi Arabia will create more than 30,000 full-time jobs, in addition to 130,000 part-time jobs by the year 2030.

PM can turn the tide against Congress in Karnataka, say BJP leaders

April 18, 2018 by Nasheman

By R. Narayan

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) may do much better in Karnataka in the forthcoming Assembly elections if Prime Minister Narendra Modi addresses a number of rallies in the Vokkaligas-dominated central and old Mysuru region.

The Janata Dal (Secular) or JDS has a strong presence in the area and has been winning most of seats in this belt. A change in strategy and PM’s addresses may attract a sizable number of party supporters.

The JDS has won more than 25 seats in all the three previous elections and this belt has been contributing much to its success.
Between 2004 and 2013, the worst performance made by the party was in 2008 when it had bagged only 28 seats. In the rest of elections it had done much better. The party had captured 58 seats in 2004 and 40 in the previous polls.

If the BJP has to do better and score over the Congress it has to win a good number of seats in this area.

Most of the party leaders, talked to, strongly believe that if the PM agrees to address 25 to 30 rallies, mostly in this region, the situation will change much in favour of the party and the ruling Congress will find the going very tough.

“There is no doubt about it. If Modi jee holds three or four meetings in this belt, we will win a number of seats”, hoped Narayan Prasad, a party office bearer in Chamarajnagar.

If a senior party leader in Mysuru is to be believed, the party had requested the Prime Minister to devote ten days in the state and address 30 rallies. It was not found possible. “He has agreed to be here for five or six days only and address 12 meetings”, he said. Dates and places are yet to be decided.

The party Karnataka in-charge also did not throw much light on it. “We are finalising places where PM will hold rallies”, Murlidhar Rao said.

Willing to talk to top Maoist leadership: Chhattisgarh CM

Willing to talk to top Maoist leadership: Chhattisgarh CM
By Brajendra Nath Singh

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh, who has been battling left-wing extremists in the state for the last 15 years, says he is ready to talk to Maoists — but only if their top leadership comes to the table.

He says the fight against Maoists is the “toughest fight in the world” and asserts that left-wing extremists can still claim dominance in only “15-20 per cent areas” in just two districts — Bijapur and Sukma.

“The battle against Maoists is the toughest fight in the world. This is a fight where our own people (Maoists) roam around wearing lungis and suddenly start firing. What will a jawan do under such circumstances? They (Maoists) keep themselves surrounded by women and children and innocent villagers. We can’t do anything. We can’t kill everybody,” Singh, the longest-serving Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Chief Minister, told IANS in an interview.

He said that the fight on the borders was “easier” as enemies are known, but the battle against Maoists was different.

“On the border we know our posts and can easily identify the enemies. We can use guns, bombs and other heavy arms against them. But here it is a different fight. We know they (Maoists) are there, but we can’t use bombs and other weapons against them as they keep themselves surrounded by villagers,” he said.

Inviting top Maoist leaders for talks, Singh urged them to join the mainstream by involving themselves in development work.

“What is the problem in talks? We are ready, but we can’t talk to district-level Maoists. They are only following the directions of top Maoists. Whenever there are talks, it will be with the top leadership that includes their five-seven Politburo members. If they come forward, we can find some way out,” he said.

“This (Maoists) is not the problem of Chhattisgarh alone. They are spread in six states,” he added.

“Most of these Maoists operate from Andhra Pradesh, while some operate from Odisha, Telangana and Garhchiroli in Maharashtra. Bastar is spread across 40,000 sq km, an area larger than Kerala. They flee to any of these states after committing crimes against humanity,” he said.

The Chief Minister claimed that through development work in Maoist-hit areas, his government has been successful in curbing and countering their influence.

“Now you can freely roam in any area of Dantewada, even on two-wheelers. Change is visible when you travel to these areas. By creating infrastructure — roads and power — I have been able to win the confidence of the people,” he said, referring to a district that was once a hotbed to Maoist activity.

Singh said that power works as a major catalyst for change. “Once a person gets addicted to light (power), he will never like the dark. I am trying to provide power to every household. Once this is done, we will distribute smartphones to each student — at the bachelors and masters level, or those doing MBBS and engineering..

“Today we have reached a stage where there are only some 640,000 homes without power. These houses will be equipped with power by June this year.

“In some parts of Dantewada and Sukma, where we are facing problems in providing power supply, we are distributing solar lanterns. If the Maoists find these lanterns in any house, they break them. Now we are distributing these lanterns to students and they use it for their studies.”

Recalling the challenges faced in the fight against the Maoists, he said that Chhattisgarh was the only state in India where there was a stretch of 150 km of National Highways that had “mitti” (untarred) roads — because the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) that was tasked with constructing the roads back in 2003 had refused to do so because of the Maoist threat.

“Finally, we decided to get this patch of 150 km constructed by local contractors. Now, from Jagdalpur, Dantewada, Sukma to Bijapur — all are well connected by road,” he said.

Kathua incident shameful, we need to know where are we are going: President Ram Nath Kovind

April 18, 2018 by Nasheman

President Ram Nath Kovind on Wednesday condemned the horrific gangrape and murder of eight-year-old girl in Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir and wondered what kind of society India was developing into.

“After 70 years of independence such an incident occurring in any part of the country is shameful. We have to think what kind of society are we developing. It is our responsibility to ensure such a thing does not happen to any girl or woman,” President Ram Nath Kovind said in his address at the sixth convocation ceremony of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University in Katra.

Before the President’s address, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti also spoke about the Kathu rape incident that occurred in January.

“How can someone do such a cruel thing to a small girl who is a manifestation of Mata Vaishno Devi, there is something wrong with the society,” Mufti said.

On January 10, an eight-year-old girl belonging to a nomadic tribe went missing from near her house in Rasna village in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kathua district. A week later, her body was found in the forest.

A chargesheet filed by the state police revealed that the minor was raped, sedated and tortured before being killed.

The incident has sparked outrage across the country, with people carrying out protests demanding justice for the 8-year-old girl.

The parents of the girl are demanding death sentence for the accused.

‘We have to think what kind of society are we developing. It is our responsibility to ensure such a thing does not happen to any girl or woman,’ the President said during an event at Vaishno Devi University in Jammu and Kashmir’s Katra on Wednesday.

The remark comes at a time when the Opposition is slamming Prime Minister Narendra Modi for not speaking up against the barbaric incident.

From senior BJP leader Yashwant Sinha to ex-Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, many politicians have lamented at lack of any credible narrative from the ruling BJP government after spate of heinous crimes involving minor girls.

For dental pain relief opt for Ibuprofen over opioids: Study

April 18, 2018 by Nasheman

Common painkiller ibuprofen and other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) alone or in combination with acetaminophen are better at easing dental pain, than opioids, say researchers.

While using opioids help manage pain, they also run the risk of misuse or abuse, that can cause serious harm, including addiction, overdose and death.

According to the National Institutes of Health, each day, more than 115 Americans die as a result of an opioid overdose.

“What we know is that prescribing narcotics should be a last resort,” said Anita Aminoshariae, Associate Professor at the Case Western Reserve University in the US.

“No patient should go home in pain. That means that opioids are sometimes the best option, but certainly should not be the first option,” she added.

The study showed that opioids are not among the most effective — or longest lasting — options available for relief from acute dental pain.

For adults, a combination of 400 milligrams of ibuprofen and 1,000 milligrams of acetaminophen was superior to any opioid-containing medications.

“The best available data suggests that the use of nonsteroidal medications, with or without acetaminophen, offers the most favourable balance between benefits and harms, optimising efficacy while minimising acute adverse events,” Aminoshariae said.

The results, featuring in the Journal of the American Dental Association, evaluated the safety and efficacy of dozens of pain-relief options from more than 460 published studies.

Opioids and their drug combinations were found to account for the most adverse side effects — including drowsiness, respiratory depression, nausea/vomiting and constipation — in both children and adults.

Citing the American opioid epidemic, Aminoshariae said that health-care providers should take heed of the findings.

Australia surfing event cancelled due to shark attacks

April 18, 2018 by Nasheman

A surfing event in an Australian state was called off on Wednesday due to multiple shark attacks that took place in the area earlier this week.

World Surf League (WSL) CEO Sophie Goldschmidt said that it was a difficult decision to cancel the popular Margaret River Pro event, but surfer and staff safety were paramount, reports Xinhua news agency.

The first incident occurred at Cobblestones beach in Gracetown when 37 year-old Alejandro Travaglini was mauled by a shark. He had to undergo emergency surgery on both legs.

Just hours later at a nearby beach known as Lefthanders, Jason Longgrass, 41, was also bitten on the leg.

Earlier that morning Surf Life Saving Western Australia reported several sightings of sharks in the area, including a four-metre Great White.

According to Australia’s Shark Smart website, a decomposing whale carcass nearby was likely to be what had attracted the predators.

Barred director set to return to Cannes Film Festival

April 18, 2018 by Nasheman

Danish director Lars von Trier, who has been barred from the Cannes Film Festival since 2011 over his controversial comments about Adolf Hitler, will make a comeback at the gala in May.

Director Lars von Trier leaving the press conference of the film “Nymphomaniac (I)”

Festival general delegate Thierry Fremaux has revealed that Avon Trier, 61, will return in 2018, reports theguardian.com.

Fremaux told a French radio statement, “There will, maybe, be an announcement…”

The filmmaker’s “The House That Jack Built”, which stars Matt Dillon and Uma Thurman, has been linked with a slot at the festival for a long time.

The psychological thriller centres on the life of a serial killer in Washington over the space of a dozen years.

The director hasn’t been invited to Cannes since 2011 when his movie “Melancholia” screened in the festival’s main competition.

When he was asked about his German roots and his interest in the Nazi aesthetic at a press conference, Trier had delivered a controversial response.

He said at the time, “I thought I was a Jew for a long time, and I was very happy … But it turned out that I was not a Jew. And then I found out that I was really a Nazi because my family was German. Which also gave me some pleasure. What can I say?”

During the press conference, the movie’s star, Kirsten Dunst, urged the director to stop talking, but he continued with his explanation.

He said, “I understand Hitler. I think he did some wrong things, absolutely, but I can see him sitting in his bunker at the end.”

“I think I understand the man. He’s not what you call a good guy, but I understand much about him, and I sympathise with him a little bit,” he added.

Don’t just want to push, but tear the envelope: Varun Dhawan

April 18, 2018 by Nasheman

Basking in the glowing reviews of “October”, Varun Dhawan says he wants to continue seeking roles that are unique and “tear” the envelope.

Excerpts from the interview:

Q. Hello, am I speaking to the Supertar Varun Dhawan?

A. (Laughs) No, this is Dan (the character from “October”). I still haven’t come out of my character. This is that kind of an experience which I can’t just leave behind.

Q. Dan is not heroic in the filmy sense. What made you play such a character at this stage of your career?

A. This is what I was asked when I did “Badlapur”. I hope this question keeps coming up in my career.

Q. You will continue to seek out roles that push the envelope?

A. Not just push the envelope, but ‘phado’ (tear) the envelope. I am not interested in doing unconventional roles that don’t go all the way. I don’t want to take sides as far as doing mainstream and unconventional roles are concerned.

Why should off-beat roles not be popular? When we made “October”, we knew it won’t get the audience of a “Judwaa”. It was made within the required budget. And we were not disappointed with the results.

Q. The collections have increased manifold.

A. Yes, a day after the release, the audience began to increase considerably. That was very reassuring. People have connected with the film. What we see in “October” is what everyone goes through in life.

Q. Would you be doing more such ‘tearing the envelope’ roles?

A. Yes, absolutely. But it has to be a character like the one in “October” who is completely honest even about his dishonesty. We all lie to others and to ourselves. But how often is the hero allowed to admit his weaknesses on screen?

(Screenwriter) Juhi Chaturvedi has written the character as flawed and yes, quite annoying in the way he pushes his opinion about everything on others. Dan is quite overbearing. Yet he redeems himself finally. It proves there is a sensitive human being inside him. I loved my character’s journey.

Q. I didn’t like the way the journey ended?

A. I know. A lot of people have told me it shouldn’t have ended the way it did. But this was the only way it could end. If we changed the inevitable, we would be cheating.

Q. You’ve had cent-per cent success so far. Even your awful “Dilwale” is considered a hit. Do you think “October” will not interrupt your success spell?

A. About “Dilwale”, even today you will be surprised at how many people tell me they love that film. When I decided to do “October”, I put my entire soul into it. After “Badrinath Ki Dulhania” and “Judwaa 2”, I could have done another blockbuster kind of film. But I wanted to do a character who was not so high on self-confidence.

Dan is a bit of an upstart. He isn’t your average hero at all. When I heard about the role, I insisted that Shoojit Sircar cast me, although he had a completely different cast in mind. Dan is just 21-22. Much younger than me.

Q. How old are you?

A. I am 30. So I am actually not as inexperienced in things like illness and grieving as you might think. I’ve watched both my parents lose their parents and how it affected them. And I saw how my mother did the seva (tending) of her parents when they were ill.

Somewhere, I had stored all those memories and I used it in “October”.

Q. I believe you took a massive remuneration cut in “October”?

A. I wasn’t even thinking about money when I got the chance to do “October”. I just wanted to be part of this film.

Q. What is your biggest takeaway from this film?

A. It has definitely taught me to be more considerate towards others. It is not just important to feel for someone. It is also important to express that feeling. This film has also taught me to be sensitive about what goes on around me.

People die, people have accidents, but Life goes on. Nobody cares beyond a point. That’s really sad. Most importantly, now after doing “October”, I want to spend more time with my family.

Q. And yet you’ve moved out of your family home into your own place?

A. That’s because I needed more space. And my own private space.

Q. Did you buy your home as preparation for marriage?

A. Nothing like that. Of course it will happen in good time.
