First laser bilateral renal stone removal surgery at Fortis Davangere, 20mm bilateral renal stone removed

April 12, 2018 by Nasheman

The recently launched advanced clinic for Urology in Davangere, Karnataka by Fortis Hospitals Bangalore has successfully performed a laser surgery for large stone in both kidneys. The clinic was launched with an objective to provide accessibility to patients who otherwise have to travel to Bangalore for all kinds of kidney problems.

The surgery which is the first of its kind in Davangere was led by Dr Mohan Keshavamurthy, Director- Urology, Uro oncology, Andrology, Transplant & Robotic surgery, Dr Shakir Tabrez, Consultant, Urology ,Uro oncology ,Transplant & Robotic Surgery and Dr Allamprabhu, Consultant, Urology ,Uro oncology ,Transplant & Robotic Surgery, Davangere conducted a 45 min laser surgery that helped the patient recover in the shortest time.

Renal stone disease happens to be one of the major causes of chronic kidney disease. Kidney stones are formed when the solid waste particles are not properly filtered and the urine is not dissolving them. These solid particles tend to crystallize and eventually develop as stones. If the size of the stone formed is small it can pass without causing symptoms. If it is greater than 5mm it will cause blockage of the ureter resulting in severe pain in the lower back or abdomen. In this patient’s case, the stone was of 20mm.

Lasers are more effective in dealing with renal stones that have become stuck in the ureter than conventional treatment as it helps in better breaking and clearance of stone. This is a faster surgical procedure as compared to conventional ones, and helps in early recovery of the patient.

Dr Mohan Keshavamurthy, Director- Urology, Uro oncology, Andrology,Transplant & Robotic surgery said, “Unlike conventional method of kidney stone removal, the usage of laser is easier, safer and blood loss is minimal. In this case, we had to perform bilateral renal stone removal, thus usage of laser was more convenient and preferable. We perform renal stone surgery using laser commonly at Fortis Hospitals, Bangalore, and this case was the first of its kind at Davanagere.”

Dr Shakir Tabrez, Consultant Urology, Uro oncology, Andrology,Transplant & Robotic surgery, said, “Renal stone surgery is a very common procedure and can be undoubtedly very painful. Getting them operated with regular methods take time to cure and slow down recovery. With the use of laser, the risks involved are minor and patient recovers quickly. The whole procedure is risk-free and takes just 10 minutes to 1 hour depending on the size and the position of the stone. In this case, the surgery took 45 minutes and the patient was discharged on the first day”

In line with this, the patient, Revan Siddeshwara said, “ I am glad that Fortis Hospitals has started their urology facility at Davangere. The new clinic helped me get access to quality treatment at my native place without travelling to bigger cities like Bangalore. I was suffering from kidney stone from a long time, doctor recommended me to go for laser surgery as it would less painful and faster recovery. I would like to thank the team of doctors for successful surgery and recovery.

Bilateral renal stone is one of its kind and has so far given best results in patients.

IPL: CSK coach, Raina, Harbhajan, ‘sad’ on home venue shift

April 12, 2018 by Nasheman

After the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) home matches were shifted following the Cauvery water dispute, which has created a volatile situation in the southern city, several members of the franchise have expressed their disappointment on missing out on playing in their home ground but hoped that the issue would soon be resolved.

Expressing his dismay, CSK coach Stephen Fleming tweeted: “Sad to be leaving Chennai today. Great to be back and again experience the love and passion the Tamil Nadu fans have for cricket and CSK. I trust a ‘peaceful’ resolution is found soon for the problems at hand. Thanks to everyone for making the team so welcome.”

Batsman Suresh Raina tweeted: “Will miss playing on our home ground and entertaining our #Chennai fans this season…You are always in our hearts.”

The team’s batting coach, Mike Hussey, tweeted: “Very sad that we have to play our remaining home games away from Chennai. Feeling for the players and the fans but also hoping for a peaceful and swift resolution to the current problems. Thanks for the incredible support of all the CSK fans.”

Harbhajan Singh, the new cricketer in the CSK side, also seemed unhappy on leaving the home ground.

“Heart breaking news..no more ipl games in chennai.. fans have waited two years for CSK to play in front of them at home..hope all the issues get solved soon and matches comes back to chennai soon…Thank u for your love, wishes, prayers would be needed all the time,” Harbhajan tweeted.

English batsman Sam Billings said: “Gutted that we have had to move from Chepauk, the atmosphere was unbelievable! Thoughts with the fan who was badly hurt last night, no one should go to watch & end up in hospital. Hope he recovers soon & all issues are resolved. Keep supporting us it makes a huge difference!.”

The decision to shift the remaining CSK home matches to Pune came in wake of protests by Tamil groups demanding that no Indian Premier League (IPL) match should take place in the city until the Cauvery Management Board (CMB) is set up as mandated by the Supreme Court.

Following this, the IPL Governing Council decided to shift the remaining home matches of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) to Pune’s Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium.

Saudi Arabia breaks new ground by hosting first-ever Arab Fashion Week

April 12, 2018 by Nasheman

Fashionable women, dark-haired Saudis and blonde Eastern Europeans alike, fill the gold-trimmed halls of Riyadh’s Ritz-Carlton Hotel, marking the start of Saudi Arabia’s first-ever fashion week. Models and make-up artists, preparing for the inaugural Saudi episode of Arab Fashion Week, said they were surprised the event was taking place in the deeply conservative Muslim kingdom.

“We are so excited because this is the first fashion week in Saudi Arabia, so we are making history,” model Anita Dmycroska said. Strict social restrictions have eased dramatically under Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who has reined in religious police, introduced public concerts, and lifted bans on cinemas and women driving.

Yet, restrictions persist. Tuesday’s reception was open to men and cameras, but only women are permitted at catwalk events and outside photography is barred. Women in public places in Saudi Arabia, the birthplace of Islam, wear abayas — loose-fitting, full-length robes symbolic of piety.

With recent reforms, women in some cities have begun to don more colourful abayas, sometimes trimmed with lace and velvet or left open to reveal long skirts or jeans. No abayas will feature on the catwalk. The event hosts invitation-only fashion viewings and a Harvey Nichols pop-up store in a tent that was still being erected hours before the first show.

Another tent holds the catwalk, featuring designers from Brazil, Lebanon, Russia, Saudi Arabia, the United States and the United Arab Emirates.

The event, initially scheduled for last month, was postponed because of delays in issuing visas. Industry figures from Italy, Russia and Lebanon flocked to Riyadh, many for the first time, to admire the work of local and international designers. Layla Issa Abouzeid, Saudi Arabia country director for the Dubai-based Arab Fashion Council (AFC) organising the event, said 1,500 people were expected to attend, including 400 from abroad.
She hopes the event will bring revenue into the kingdom and highlight local talent. “[When] people go to Paris on the Paris Fashion week, the hotels are fully booked,” she said. “I want to create the same demand in Saudi Arabia, twice a year. I want to create a platform for the local designers to go worldwide.”

Lebanese designer Naja Saade came to Riyadh to display his couture collection. “I’m very proud to participate in this first edition of Arab Fashion Week in Saudi Arabia, because it’s a part of the revolution of the women in this country,” he said. By bringing talent from Europe and placing international brands on the same catwalk as Arab brands, he hopes to elevate local fashion designers. AFC wants to introduce fashion courses, internships and scholarships to Saudi Arabia and develop a fashion district in Riyadh.

TN presents Modi with memo on Cauvery

April 12, 2018 by Nasheman

Amidst statewide protests, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K. Palaniswami on Thursday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to immediately set up the Cauvery Management Board.

He presented a memorandum to Modi, who was on a whirlwind visit to inaugurate the DefExpo and a function at the Cancer Institute. Widespread protests in Chennai and several parts of the state greeted the Prime Minister after the Centre failed to set up the CMB despite being told to do so by the Supreme Court.

In the memorandum, Palaniswami recalled the February 16 Supreme Court verdict that said that a scheme be formulated by the Central government within six weeks to “implement the notified final order of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal as modified by its judgment”.

On April 9, the apex court clearly stated that the final order of the CWDT had “merged with the judgment of the Supreme Court”, he said.

It said that, therefore, constitution of the Cauvery Management Board had become an “integral part of the Supreme Court’s judgment”.

Delta areas are dependent on Cauvery water for irrigation and they were fervently hoping that the implementation machinery would be constituted by the Centre to enable them to commence the agricultural operations in the next irrigation season which starts on June 1, the memorandum said.

Modi was urged to immediately constitute the Cauvery Management Board and the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee “vested with all powers to effectively implement the orders of the Tribunal and the Supreme Court”.

Kamal Haasan said that to MR Modi “People are more important than elections”

April 12, 2018 by Nasheman

Actor-turned-politician Kamal Haasan on Thursday recorded an open message for Prime Minister Narendra Modi, asking for justice to Tamil Nadu over the Cauvery water dispute.

Taking to his Twitter handle, the Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) chief said, “Sir, I am sure you are aware of the crisis that is gripping Tamil Nadu over the Cauvery water. I believe, from your past experience, you could easily deliver justice in the case of Narmada River Water Board.”
Haasan further said, people of the state believe that there is a delay in Cauvery water issue because of the upcoming elections in Karnataka that are scheduled to take place on May 12.

“I want this belief to be dispelled. People are more important than elections,” he added.

Haasan asked Modi to follow the Supreme Court judgement, and also posted an open letter to the Prime minister, in which he wrote “I am sure you will fulfill your duty towards the people and farmers of Tamil Nadu by constituting the Cauvery water Management Board immediately.”

On February 16, the court had ordered the Central government to set up the Cauvery water Management Board (CMB) and Cauvery Water Regulation Committee (CWRC) within six weeks, in regards to the Cauvery River water dispute between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.

The Centre’s failure to constitute CMB led to various protests in Tamil Nadu. Earlier on Thursday, opposition parties held a black flag protest against the Prime Minister’s visit to the city without constituting the CMB.

People’s Union for Civil Liberties – Kar nataka

April 12, 2018 by Nasheman

Popular Front of India (P FI) is an organization of citizens of India. Members of PFI are
guaranteed their right to freedom of expression and association under constitution of India. PFI has units in all states. The state and central governments have the responsibility to protect their rights and respond to their demands, rather than silencing their voices. Unfortunately, in a complete abdication of its duty to protect and uphold fundamental rights of all citizens, Jharkhand state government has banned P FI, alleging some of its members influenced by ISIS. It is an unfortunate development and unconstitutional action, and there is no evidence suggesting that PFI itself identifies with or con dones the activities of ISIS in any manner whatsoever. PUCL Karna taka condemns banning state Jharkhand PFI unit.

The state should have identified such members associated with ISIS and initiated legal action against them, instead of banning P FI as an organization. It is evident that the banning of the organization is entirely communally and politically motivated and biased. PFI has been a large organization with thousands of members from minorities and other weaker sections of the society. They have been engaged in mobilizing and educating communities on their rights and entitlements, promoting literacy, education and demanding their share of resources in health services, education, employment, welfare and social security as a matter of right guaranteed by the constitution of India.

PFI has in recent times been particularly active in seeking justice for communal atrocities through legal interventions. This begs the question of whether there is anything wrong with highlighting lynchings that took place in Jamt ara, Latehar, Ramgarh and Seraikela. What is wrong in filing case against police atrocities? What is wrong in demanding justice and compensation to the victim families? The impunity of the majority community in cases of lynching is supported by the police, and P FI has been working tirelessly to expose this nexus. P FI has been raising such issues as a human rights violation and demanding action through rallies and protests without any violence. Any action against PFI reeks of state high ‐handedness, and its tacit support for perpetrators of communal violence. Hence, the ban on Jharkhand d PFI is illegal, unconstitutional, and constitutes the violation of freedom of expression and freedom of association. It is an organized attempt by the ruling BJP government to misuse the constitutional systems and structures.

Therefore, it is time for Governor as constitutional head of the state of Jharkhand to protect the fundamental rights and democratic rights of minorities living in the state. Thus PUCL – Karnataka urges the Honorable Governor of the Jharkhand to revoke the ban on PFI in the state.

Kremlin to Trump: We don’t engage in Twitter diplomacy

April 12, 2018 by Nasheman

Kremlin said that Moscow supports serious initiatives on the Syrian crisis and other international issues [File: Reuters]

by Al Jazeera

A Kremlin spokesperson has said that Russia does not engage in Twitter diplomacy after US President Donald Trump used the social media platform to warn Moscow of imminent military action in Syria, the Interfax news agency reported.

“We do not participate in Twitter diplomacy,” Dimitri Peskov was quoted as saying by Interfax.

“We support serious approaches. We continue to believe that it is important not to take steps that could harm an already fragile situation.”

Trump told Russia in an early morning tweet on Wednesday to prepare for “nice and new and ‘smart!'” missile attacks in Syria after an alleged chemical attack on the last rebel stronghold in the country.

In response to Trump’s tweet, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said: “Smart missiles should fly towards terrorists, not [Syria’s] lawful government, which has spent several years fighting against international terrorism on its territory.”

Peskov said his country, which has been involved in the Syrian conflict since 2015 and an ally to President Bashar al-Assad, is convinced that the allegations of the use of chemical weapons in Eastern Ghouta’s city of Douma is false and cannot be used as a pretext to undertake any military steps against Syria.

Peskov also expressed Moscow’s support for serious initiatives on the Syrian crisis and other international issues.

UK discusses options

In London, British Prime Minister Theresa May summoned her senior ministers to a special cabinet meeting on Thursday to discuss options for joining the United States in possible military action against Syria.

May is prepared to take action against the Assad government in Syria without first seeking parliamentary consent, sources have told the BBC.

May recalled the ministers from their Easter holiday for a special cabinet meeting in Downing Street later on Thursday to discuss Britain’s response to what she has cast as a barbaric attack that cannot go unchallenged.

“The chemical weapons attack that took place on Saturday in Douma in Syria was a shocking and barbaric act,” May told reporters on Wednesday. “All the indications are that the Syrian regime was responsible.”

The Daily Telegraph newspaper said May had ordered British submarines to move within missile range of Syria in readiness for strikes against the Syrian military.

On Tuesday, the United Nations Security Council rejected rival draft resolutions by the US and Russia to set up a new expert body to probe chemical weapons attacks in Syria.

The US proposal called for establishing an independent investigative mechanism to conduct on-site inspections to find out who used chemical weapons, while Russia proposed its own plan to send investigators to the site of the alleged attack.
