April 11, 2018 by Nasheman

Dr Yathindra, son of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, had to be called off a meeting with the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes leaders’ midway, as the participants sought this as an opportunity to air their grievances and were not ready to listen to him.

The meeting was held at a private hotel in the city of the participants from Varuna and Chamundeshwari Assembly constituencies on Tuesday. There was commotion for sometime after the participants raised uncomfortable questions.

The leaders were displeased with both Siddaramaiah and Dr. Yathindra and complained, “You people remember us only when election approaches. When we need your help, nobody is available at your house. Without helping us in any way, now you want us to vote for you. You treat us as mere voters, nothing more.”

“Even while issuing benefits to the SC and ST community people, the beneficiaries are the same set of people. For others, no loan or financial assistance is extended, despite numerous and repeated applications to the department concerned,” they expressed.

The Dalit leaders sought opportunity to air the complaints of every single aggrieved person in the hall. The meeting had to be called off as the combined effort of Dr. Yathindra and others to pacify the participants failed.

S M Krishna happy, BJP offers ticket to his family member

April 11, 2018 by Nasheman

The BJP on Tuesday, April 10, offered to field a member of senior leader S M Krishna’s family in the upcoming polls, in an effort to keep the former chief minister happy. Earlier in the day, it was reported in certain media that Krishna would quit BJP and will join Congress soon.

Krishna, a Vokkaliga, who was chief minister from 1999 to 2004 under Congress regime, quit the party in January last year and formally joined the BJP in March. He had cited the reason of being sidelined as a mass leader. But since joining the BJP, Krishna was only seen during a Parivarthana Yatra in Mandya in January this year and then at Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s rally in Bengaluru in February.

“If any of Krishna’s family member is willing to contest, the BJP is ready to give the ticket to any Assembly seat in either Mandya or Bengaluru,” BJP leader and former deputy chief minister R Ashoka told reporters.

Krishna has two daughters – Shambhavi, who is married to liquor baron Vijay Mallya’s stepbrother and Malavika, married to businessman V G Siddhartha. Krishna had considered fielding Shambhavi in the 2009 Lok Sabha polls.

“Krishna is not leaving the BJP. He is not in India right now, but I spoke to a friend of his. He is expected back home on April 13. We will discuss the election issue with him then. I am hundred per cent sure that Krishna will not leave. He is committed to strengthen the party,” Ashoka added.

Ashok also criticized Congress on the Krishna issue. “I have seen in the media Congress shedding crocodile tears. When Krishna left them, no one shed a tear. Today, knowing they will lose the election, Congress is feeling the need for a leader like Krishna. I congratulate the Congress for the wisdom has finally dawned on them,” he said.

A thrilling win for CSK beating KKR by 5 wickets

April 11, 2018 by Nasheman

Sam Billings played a little gem as Chennai Super Kings once again pulled off a thrilling chase, beating Kolkata Knight Riders by five wickets in an IPL encounter here on Tuesday.

Chasing a stiff target of 203, CSK won the match with a ball to spare as Ravindra Jadeja deposited military medium stuff from R Vinay Kumar into stands. The India discard bowled a forgettable final over where CSK needed 17 runs to win.

This was after Englishman Billings set it up nicely with a magnificent 56 off 23 balls that contained five huge sixes apart from a couple of boundaries.

The pressure put by Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s slow batting (25 off 28 balls) was neutralised by Billings.

Chasing a target of 203 needed a blazing start and veteran Shane Watson was up for a challenge, hitting 42 off 19 balls with three fours and an equal number of sixes in a 75-run opening stand with Ambati Rayudu (39 off 26 balls). Tom Curran making his IPL debut got rid of Watson with a short ball and Rayudu was accounted by Kuldeep Yadav as he tried an inside-out shot.

Suresh Raina (14) sustained a calf muscle injury which hampered his running between the wickets with Sunil Narine sending him back. Dhoni and Billings got the chase back on track with a 54-run stand.

Earlier, Andre Russell hit an incredible 11 sixes in his 36-ball-88 as Kolkata Knight Riders scored a competitive 202 for six after being put into bat.

In one of the finest counter-attacking innings in recent editions of IPL, Russell came in at 89 for 5 and then took the bowling apart with as many as seven sixes being hit off West Indies team-mate Dwayne Bravo, including three in an over.

Russell was involved in a 76-run sixth wicket partnership with skipper Dinesh Karthik (26) as KKR went onto post a good total. In fact, the last five overs yielded 79 runs that got KKR back into the match.

CSK captain MS Dhoni’s strategy to use his slow bowlers in the initial stages on a surface aiding spin worked well but Russell had other ideas as he attacked the pacers including Shardul Thakur (1/37 in 4 overs) and Bravo (0/50 in 3 overs).

Bravo, who was frugal against Mumbai Indians in the first game, was taken for 50 runs in three overs with Russell hammering him all over the park, sending two balls out of the stadium.

Earlier, Sunil Narine got off to a flying start as he did in the game against RCB by hammering Deepak Chahar for two big sixers on the leg-side in the first over of the match.

However, he departed off the first ball he faced from the experienced Harbhajan Singh (1/11 in 2 overs) in the second over, going for a big hit to be caught by Suresh Raina.

Chris Lynn, the dangerman, appeared to be getting into his groove and had hit four boundaries, before being castled by Ravindra Jadeja for 22.

Nitish Rana underlined his potential in his brief knock of 16 before an edge lobbed up to Dhoni. Robin Uthappa, who appeared in good touch, hitting three sixes in his 16-ball-29 was run-out as Raina’s throw caught him short of his ground.

The talented young Rinku Singh didn’t last long and fell to Shardul Thakur to leave KKR in a spot of bother at 89 for 5 in 10 overs. Although Russell rescued KKR with a blistering knock, CSK pulled off another heist.

ICC prosecutor seeks to open Rohingya deportation probe

April 10, 2018 by Nasheman

Nearly 700,000 Rohingya fled Myanmar to Bangladesh following a military crackdown last August [File: Reuters]

by Al Jazeera

The chief prosecutor for the International Criminal Court (ICC) has asked it to rule on whether it has jurisdiction over the deportations of Rohingya people from Myanmar to Bangladesh.

A ruling affirming jurisdiction could pave the way for Prosecutor Fatou Bensouda to investigate the deportation of many thousands of Rohingya, a possible crime against humanity.

In a filing published on Monday, Bensouda contended that “consistent and credible reports … indicate that since August 2017 more than 670,000 Rohingya, lawfully present in Myanmar, have been intentionally deported across the international border into Bangladesh.”

Asking judges to rule whether the ICC has jurisdiction, she said: “This is not an abstract question but a concrete one, affecting whether the Court may exercise jurisdiction … to investigate and, if necessary, prosecute.”

The main reason for doubt over jurisdiction is that, while Bangladesh is a member of the court, Myanmar is not.

Bensouda argued that, given the cross-border nature of the crime of deportation, a ruling in favour of ICC jurisdiction would be in line with established legal principles.

But she acknowledged uncertainty around the definition of the crime of deportation and limits of the court’s jurisdiction.

Her request is the first of its kind filed at the court.

She asked the court to set up a special tribunal to hear her arguments, urging that it dealt with in an “expeditious” manner.

Human rights groups have welcomed Bensouda’s request, with Matthew Smith of Fortify Rights, a campaign group, calling it a “tangible path to accountability for Rohingya victims”.

“We have reason to believe this could have a preventive effect,” he added.

“This avenue to accountability could really disrupt the culture of impunity in Myanmar, and it could also prevent the next round of mass killings. It may give generals pause before ordering similar attacks.”

The magistrate assigned to consider the request, Congolese judge Antoine Kesia-Mbe Mindua, will have considerable leeway in determining how to proceed.

The United Nations said the military operation that caused the Rohingya to flee their homes into Bangladesh constitutes ethnic cleansing.

Buddhist-majority Myanmar rejects that charge, saying its forces have been waging a legitimate campaign against a Rohingya armed group who attacked government forces.

Myanmar government regards the Rohingya as illegal immigrants from Bangladesh despite the ethnic minority living there for generations.
